  • Disabled admin account on Win 2008 R2

    I accidentally disabled the administrator account on an install of Windows Server 2008 R2 via the net user command. Now I cant get an elevated command prompt to re-enable the admin user, nor do any privileged operation that requires an admin password. Normally I would type in a password and click yes but there is no password field and yes is grayed out. How can I re-enable the administrator account?

  • Mixed network, Linux-to-Linux hostname resolution issues

    At work we have an WinSBS domain at the heart of our network, which is all Windows PCs. The domain controller is acting as a DNS for these computers. I have recently added some personal use Linux machines to the network, without joining them to the domain. I have set up Samba with "wins server" pointing to the domain controller, which lets the Windows boxes resolve the Linux hostnames just fine. I also have resolvconf set up with the domain controller as a nameserver and the local domain as a searched domain, which lets the Linux boxes resolve the Windows hostnames just fine. However, the Linux boxes will not resolve other Linux hostnames at all. Given that I don't have control over the DNS server (I am not the network admin) and that at least one of the Linux boxes is not an always-on machine and is likely to change its LAN IP frequently (via DHCP), what service am I missing to make their hostnames visible to each other?

  • IIS6 Virtual SMTP server isn't coming back up automatically after a system restart

    I've got a virtual server running Win2008 RC2. I've set up IIS6 with a virtual SMTP server on it to be the mail provider for the websites I'm hosting there. It all works great, but if for some reason the server reboots (auto updates are still enabled - I'm trying to make this as little work as possible as we've got a Lot of clients), the IIS6 doesn't restart the SMTP server. The failure causes 500 errors on the current setup, so I'm spending half the day apologising. Any ideas? In Services I've set everything to come back up automatically, but still no dice. As soon as I restart the SMTP, no problems, all the mail gets sent. It's working perfectly, it just won't restart on it's own. I'd really rather not turn auto updates off as we're such a small company I just can't spare the time to be manually updating 15 copies of windows every time MS decide there's a security patch. All advice appreciated! BTW, I am a complete newb to these forums. I searched but couldn't find an answer, so please be nice. But firm. I've got to learn here.

  • Trouble getting SSL to work with django + nginx + wsgi

    I've followed a couple of examples for Django + nginx + wsgi + ssl, but I can't get them to work. I simply get an error in my browser than I can't connect. I'm running two websites off the host. The config files are identical except for the ip addresses, server names, and directories. When neither use SSL, they work fine. When I try to listen on 443 with one of them, I can't connect to either.   • OSX: sync Documents folder to Dropbox with version control

    I have ample storage in Dropbox to sync my entire OSX Documents folder, and I'd like to this just so that I have it anywhere I go. I found this question, which describes a method for doing this with symlinks. Seems good, the only problem is that it would be nice also to have everything under version control. I thought perhaps a better solution would be to set up my Documents folder as a git repo with a remote that I would push to in my Dropbox folder. Alternatively, just set up Documents as a git repo with no remote and then symlink it to Dropbox. Which of these two alternatives is preferable? What are some pitfalls I might not be thinking of with each? It also has occurred to me that some of the subdirectories of Documents are themselves git repos with github remotes. Would it cause problems for these subdirectories if I made Documents a git repo? If so, how do I get around this? Would making Documents an svn repo instead help? Is there a way to set up git so that this is not an issue?

  • Why can't I boot in to Windows Recovery Environment to fix my HDD or salvage my data?

    I've been trying to get in to WindowsRE to salvage the files on my Sony Vaio laptop after it failed to load Vista (it finally, consistently displays "Error loading operating system" after months of such intermittent failures, usually rectified via restarts or utilizing Startup Repair or CHKDSK from WindowsRE) . The problem is, after successfully accessing it once after this failure (and many times before over the course of the laptop's life), I can no longer get it to load. During the last successful access (right after the failure), I ran startup repair, which itself failed and notified me that the boot sector was corrupt. I attempted to head in to Sony's proprietary recovery tools menu, which is accessible from WindowsRE when it is loaded from the recovery partition or recovery disk, however it hung. I have since been unable to access the recovery environment after restarting, using any of these methods: Access via the recovery partition (pressing F10 on boot) Access via recovery DVD (created using the same computer when it was healthy) Access via a Windows Vista installation DVD All three methods produce the same results: The computer acknowledges the boot attempt The computer successfully gets passed the "Windows is loading files" screen The computer successfully gets passed the Windows loading screen The computer then stalls at a black screen, while showing HDD activity (via indicator light). After a few minutes, the HDD activity ceases, and after a few more minutes, the over sized cursor that is utilized in WindowsRE appears on the black screen. The actual recovery environment, however, never appears, even after leaving the computer in such a state overnight. What is fustrating is that other bootable utilities, such as SeaTools for DOS and MemTest, boot up and run fine. In running perfectly normally, MemTest was able to produce a plethora of errors utilizing my RAM. I'm inclined to believe the RAM's faultiness may causing the WindowsRE booting to fail. Would this be a valid assumption? If I'm not mistaken, booting from external media utilizes the RAM, so such a reason is plausible, assuming my knowledge of bootloading is correct. Other than that, I can't figure out any reason why all the bootable utilities except WindowsRE run fine. Does anyone know what the problem is, or could be? Any solutions?

  • Keyboard problem, my Insert key is mix with my Delete key. How to disable overwrite text mode?

    I have a problem, everytime i type a text, it is overwriting what i have typed. i assume that the mode is set to overwriting, I want to insert the text not overwrite it, but i can't disable it because my insert key is mix up with my delete key so everytime i enter insert to disable the overwrite mode, it just delete what i type. so how to disable this? it's getting very annoying.. i'm using centOS.. and it seems that my problem is only related to netbeans because when i type here, it is set to insert mode.. but in netbeans, it just overwrites the codes! help!

  • Redirect local, not internal, requests using SuSEfirewall2 or an iptables rule

    I have a server that is running a web application deployed on Tomcat and is sitting in a test network. We're running SuSE 11 sp1 and have some redirection rules for incoming requests. For example we don't bind port 80 in Tomcat's server.xml file, instead we listen on port 9600 and have a configuration line in SuSEfirewall2 to redirect port 80 to 9640. This is because Tomcat doesn't run as root and can't open up port 80. My web application needs to be able to make requests to port 80 since that is the port it will be using when deployed. What rule can I add so that local requests get redirected by iptables? I tried looking at this question: How do I redirect one port to another on a local computer using iptables? but suggestions there didn't seem to help me. I tried running tcpdump on eth0 and then connecting to my local IP address (not 127.0.0.1, but the actual address) but I didn't see any activity. I did see activity if I connected from an external machine. Then I ran tcmpdump on lo, again tried to connect and this time I saw activity. So this leads me to believe that any requests made to my own IP address locally aren't getting handled by iptables. I will wish to change the gateway of a Proxmox virtual machine (openvz) who runs on this dedicaced server to go through the failover IP rather than the ip of host main server.   • Why can't I run virtualenv without root?

    I'm trying to run virtual env and all the documentation says I don't need to run it as root (and probably shouldn't). If I run it as root, everything works.   • Is Gmail Being Blocked by my ISP (wait till you read this)?

    This is the strangest thing I have ever encountered. I have a desktop on which I cannot access Gmail and also youtube sign in (I believe since youtube is owned by google they both use the same sign in system). So okay, maybe my ISP is blocking these for some reason or maybe my firewall is, or maybe there is something wrong with my connectivity, right? NO. On other computers that uses the same connection via a wireless router I can access both gmail and youtube sign in just fine. On this computer which doesn't have a wireless card and so I have to connect via Ethernet cable (connected to a USB converter since the Ethernet port doesn't work anymore) I can access all sites and services including things like aol and hotmail. But only when it comes to gmail, do I get complete and utter throttling. I even turned off my AV ad Firewall momentarily and no luck. The gmail ages starts to load and by mid point it just stays there loading and loading and loading... never ends. I tried everything, I reset the modem and router multiple times. I reinstalled my operating system from a vista to a windows 7 hoping a complete reinstall would solve the issue, but no luck. So can anyone for the life of them figure out why this could be? And yes, I am going to call my ISP but not to solve this issue, but to cancel them. I want to upgrade to cabel from DSL anyway. I didn't mention my ISP because I'm not sure if that is within the rules (if it's okay some one let me know and I will). P.S. All this happened one day, before gmail was perfectly accessible in this computer. I can't remember anything special that happened on that day prior to this. The only thing I can think of is, my ISP or Google itself is blocking this computer based on it's mac address, but I don't know if that's even done.   • Windows Home Server backup recovery missing driver for USB Device

    I'm doing a backup recovery of a Windows 7 PC from the backup on Windows Home Server. I've done this before and am accustomed to the prompt to load drivers for devices such as the NIC from a USB flash drive, which I have all loaded up with the drivers from the special folder in the WHS backup repository for this PC. My problem on this PC is that one of the drivers the recovery CD complains is missing is "USB Device", and it fails to find the drivers when I click the button to scan for and install drivers. So it seems it can't access the USB flash drive to load the other drivers. Any suggestions? I think my next step is to pull a DVD drive from another system and plug it in with a CD burned with the device drivers.

    I was trying to capture localhost traffic with Ethereal, which doesn't work without re-routing localhost traffic to your router gateway. I didn't get the route command quite right, and messed up my routing table. I typed route -f to clear the routing table and rebooted, but when I finished rebooting, the routing table wasn't restored to its original state. I didn't use the -p parameter, so none of my changes should have persisted after a reboot. What can I do to restore the routing table to its default routes?

  • Google Apps Sync bloated PST file to 14GB

    Back story: I have Outlook connected to my Google Apps email and noticed that some mail never got migrated from my original PST file. I found some VBA code online that compares mail in different PST folders, modified it to find missing and copy those to the target folder. I ran it folder by folder and moved missing mail. Before the exercise the Google Apps PST was about ~4GB and after it was ~4.7GB. Problem: I left Outlook open so Google Sync can copy it online. 24 hours later the Google Apps PST file bloated to 14GB+ and none of the mail has been synced to the cloud. I know that there should be at most ~5GB of mail. Why is the rest of the space being taken up? Funny thing is Gmail shows 3GB as being used online. What I tried: I emptied the deleted items folder and recycling bin I've run Outlook compact PST and it didn't work. I tried SCANPST.exe on the PST and it didn't work. I re-ran compact PST and it didn't work (after SCANPST found and fixed a few errors) Any ideas out there on what caused the problem and how to solve it?

(HTTP 404) but after setting these env variables it worked export SERVICE_ENDPOINT=http://192.168.10.15:35357/v2.0 export SERVICE_TOKEN=token but after that for keystone token-get its showing 'Client' object has no attribute 'service_catalog' Why is it so?How can it be fixed any ideas

  • How important is patch management?

    Problem I'm trying to sell the idea of organizational patch/update management and antivirus management to my superiors. Thus far, my proposition has been met with two responses: We haven't had any issues yet (I would add that we know of) We just don't think it's that big of a risk. Question Are there any resources available that can help me sell this idea? I've been told that 55-85% of all security related issues can be resolved by proper anti-virus and patch/update management but the individual that told me couldn't substantiate the claim. Can it be substantiated? Additional Information 1/5 of our computers (the ones on the building) have Windows update turned on by default and anti-virus installed. 4/5 of our computers are outside corporate and the users currently have full control over anti-virus and Windows updates (I know this is an issue, one step at a time).

  • Adding operation in middle of complex sequence diagram in visio 2003

    I am using Microsoft Visio 2003 to define static classes with operations/methods and a sequence diagrams referring to these classes. The sequence diagram is almost done, but i realized that i missed one operation in middle of the diagram. When i try to move rest of the sequences down by selecting it as a block, all the operations in the block loose link with static diagrams. ( Methods which were referred to static classes as fun(), became fun, which means that now they no longer refer to static diagrams and any future changes would not be reflected in dynamic sequence diagrams automatically.) The sequence diagrams have grown to A3 size paper and i have many of such diagrams which needs correction. Manually moving the operations one by one would involve lots of effort. Could someone kindly suggest a way to overcome this problem?

  • Tomcat 6.0 service does not start: java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError

    I installed Tomcat on my Windows XP PC. But I can't get it to start. I start the service and I see the progress bar, but it fails. I installed the Java Runtime Environment Version 6 and created JRE_HOME Environment variable. (C:\Program Files\Java\jre6) Any ideas? Thanks.   • Google Mini Search Does Not Return Results

    I pointed the Google Mini to a small intranet site. (8 simple HTML pages) It crawls all 8 pages just fine, but a simple search with a word clearing contained within the body of the pages returns 0 results. If I enter a search like this: "site:mysite.net", it returns all 8 pages. If I enter a search with a word contained in a Url, it will return that Url. In the search results, only the Url is returned in the list items. There is no Page Title or blurb text you normally see in Google search results. It's as if it is only indexing the Url and skipping the page title, body, etc. I have an old software Version 3.4.14, but I wanted to try to get this thing working without an upgrade. It worked before for another domain, so why would it not work now. Any ideas?

  • Getting PHP to work with apache to run .php files through browser

    I have VPS running Debian 5.0 (I think) and I would like to get it to run PHP files. I was told it needed to be configured with Apache. I tried entering the command apt-get install apache2 php5 libapache2-mod-php5. But there was no change.   • IP Camera working on lan but not on internet

    My IP cam model is Genius 350TR, I tested the cam at home on lan and internet and it worked. Then I shifted it to an office. It works on the office lan setup but I cannot connect to the ip cam from home. The IP cam is configured for port 192.168.0.30:7070 and it has a port forwarded to publicIP:7071 When I telnet to that public IP it connects to that port. However when I try to access the ip cam from a web browser it only shows me the configuration page and settings and the video is blank and it says connecting for some time and then says disconnected. The cam is configured for HTTP on internet and UDP on Lan. The office setup is ISP --- WifiRouter --- PC With Wifi card --- Switch --- IP CAM Is there a way to debug this problem?

  • Macbook memory upgrade question

    I've read some conflicting articles on Macbooks and memory upgrades. Some say you have to buy the "special" Mac memory (bulls$%t), others say manufacturers like Partriot and Ocz will work fine. My Macbook (non-pro) is about 6 mos old with it's 2 GB of memory (SO-DIMM 1066MHz DDR3). Does anyone have any definitive information of what will work? Thanks!
