• Fixing Windows install by connecting its hard drive via USB to a different laptop

  I tried to upgrade a laptop to SP3, which broke it. I later found out SP3 doesn't work on that 2002 laptop. I can't uninstall SP3, or fix SP2, because the hard drive is now not detected during setup (I've read that's the problem you get). I put the hard drive in a USB drive case and plugged it into my other laptop, and I can read (& write to) the disk okay. (The hard drive won't fit in my other laptop, so I'm using USB.) I need to get that disk back to SP2, or fix whatever files got screwed up causing the disk to not be recognized. I don't want to do a re-install as there are 80GB of files on it I need, and they won't fit on the HD of my other laptop, and also because I no longer have some of the install CDs for software on it. What do I need to do to fix that drive from my other laptop? (I don't want my working laptop (XP SP3) to get screwed with by putting an SP2 disk in the CD drive, or the non-o/s data on the other hard drive screwed with.)

• Errors when installing Open Office

  I followed the first set of instructions on this page to install Open Office: How to install Open Office? However, the last step which says to change the CHMOD of a folder, I got an error saying that the directory does not exist. Open Office now appears in my Ubuntu start menu, but clicking on it does nothing. I tried a reboot. Below is what I could copy from my terminal. I am running the latest Ubuntu. I have not uninstalled Libreoffice as suggested somewhere. The reason is that in the Ubuntu software centre, Libre office appears to be made up of several components and I don't know which ones to remove (or all maybe?). They are Libreoffice Draw, Math, Writer, Calc. After this operation, 480 MB of additional disk space will be used.   I have a page I'm converting from quirks mode to strict mode. I added this: All of a sudden all my tables collapsed that use cellpadding and cellspacing. Is this expected? By using strict mode, even if I set cellpadding=10 it will render as 0? (no padding)? The page looks fine in IE7 but has collapsed in Firefox. I guess I have to convert all the table cells to divs.

• Jupiter in Ubuntu 13.10 (Laptop Overheating)

  I was wondering if Jupiter (Interface for display, power and device control) will work in Ubuntu 13.10, because my laptop (Toshiba Satellite C855D, AMD A6-4400M with Radeon HD Graphics running Ubuntu 13.04 x64) keeps overheating, I tried some other tools, like laptop-mode-tools or TLP, none of those work, not at all. Jupiter was the only option and it's supposedly discontinued, the version I'm using is being maintained by JoliCloud team, but they told me they're not sure if it will work with 13.10... If it doesn't work, I'm definitely not upgrading, since overheating is a major issue for me... Thanks in advance!

  I have recently upgraded from ubuntu 11.10 to ubuntu 12.04. Generally in unity if we open several interface of an application then we can switch them by double clicking the icon of the application on unity panel. It shows the opened application's multiple interface in scale mode. But ubuntu 12.04 does not show the windows of different workspace in scale mode. If i open three nautilus, two in same and one in different workspace then click on icon show two interface (which workspace contains two). That's means it only shows current workspace's application's interface. Is it a bug or feature of ubuntu 12.04? Is there any way to fix it?

  I installed Ubuntu 11.04 for the first time yesterday. After rebooting for the first time, I couldn't log in because I couldn't type anything using the keyboard. After rebooting, the keyboard failed completely; I can only automatically boot into Windows since I can't choose Ubuntu. Then the problem got worse. I had to use On-Screen keyboard to log in into Windows. Still no keyboard. When I rebooted, my laptop couldn't reboot at all! I had to hard reboot. I decided to uninstall the Ubuntu, using the Add/Remove program in the Control Panel. I uninstalled it successfully. My laptop automatically boots into Windows without Ubuntu option. • Laptop battery fails to change unless power level very low, and then dicharges quickly

  I've had my laptop for about 5-6 weeks. Its a DELL Alienware M15x and I have never replaced the battery,such as http://www.pcbatteria.com/dell-alienware-m15x-series.html. The past 3 weeks or so the battery can only charge when the computer is off or in a low power state. If its on and plugged in it will still lose its charge unless its already at 100%. On a full charge without being plugged in it only holds its charge for about 1 hour on "power saver". This makes it extremely hard to use it as a portable device so i'm trying to find a way to troubleshoot the problem without having to buy a new battery or laptop. Unfortunately I need it for the next few months in some of my classes so its kind of urgent. Thanks for your help!

  I've got Sony Vaio laptop and my fan is on all the time, though the temperature on the video-adapter is always over 60°?. As I've googled, vaiofand does not support VPC-EA series. Is there anything I can do with that or I need another laptop? I'm using the following graphics card: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Manhattan [Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series] though the problem is not with the graphics card. I've mentioned its temperature as the highest (64°C now btw). Seems like the notebook is always overheated and I cannot control the fan speed to make it cooler. And yes, I'm using the proprietary driver ATI/AMD FGLRX graphics driver. I'm using Kubuntu 11.04.

• Fan running constantly on a Dell D420 laptop

  I'm running latest Ubuntu 12.04 beta on a Dell D420 laptop. The fan is spinning almost constantly - even after turning the PC off, letting it cool down, and then turning it back on, the fan will turn on after some idle time. Not to mention any CPU work. The CPU temps are normal, in range of 50-55 idle, and up to 70 with some load. It wouldn't be an issue, but the same PC running Fedora, or Arch Linux, had a much more modest fan profile - the temps were managed while you seldom heard the fan. To counter the problem, I currently use i8k tools, set manual temperature thresholds which seemed to have worked, but the i8kmon has a tendency to cycle the fan between lower and higher state within aboutin a second intervals - which is extremely annoying. As far as I can tell I did not run any special software (beside laptop-mode-tools), or any additional kernel modules when running Arch Linux and I can't tell about Fedora.

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04. on a Lenovo Thinkpad T400. I connected an external monitor as a second display. The laptop stands under the external screen. The laptop has a native resolution of 1440x900 (16:10), the external monitor 1280x1024 (5:4). There are two graphic adapters: one internal Intel GMA 4500 MHD and an discrete ATI card. Currently, the integrated Intel is enabled. I use the Display application to arrange the position of the monitors so it look like this: The problem: Whenever I restart my computer the configuration gets lost. First, the displays are mirrored instead of extended. I have to press Fn + F7 two times to switch to extended mode. Second, the Display settings still look like this: I know this worked once when I was running Ubuntu 10.10. I cannot tell since when it does not work. Do you know how I can permanently store the settings?

• Laptop not syncing with Ubuntu One

  I have a desktop running Maverick, and a laptop running Lucid. Both are supposed to be linked to my Ubuntu One account. The desktop syncs fine, but when I started the laptop for the first time in a couple of months, it wouldn't sync any more. The Ubuntu One Preferences window either reports "Synchronisation complete" even though no recent files have been downloaded nor have any test files created in the relevant synced folder been uploaded, or it says "Synchronisation in progress", which does not appear to be happening as it stays like this for ages and the lights on my router suggest no traffic is going through. Have repeatedly tried disconnecting and reconnecting, and removing the device from the account then reattaching it, all to no avail.

• Laptop freezes on boot, not sure where to start

  I have an Ubuntu laptop that stops responding when booting up. It will change between consoles with ctrl-alt-FN but pressing enter in the console would not even enter a blank line. The last printed line when booting up in recovery mode was "Skipping EDID probe due to cached edid". Any ideas what might be wrong? Pressing ctrl-alt-del successfully rebooted it when in that mode. Another symptom is that GRUB stopped booting automatically, not sure if related (I doubt it).

  With the official Silverlight 4 release this week, one of the things we introduced in the Telerik Silverlight controls is the ability to use the Html Placeholder control in OOB in the same way you do when the control is hosted in the browser. The good news is that you don't need to do anything in order to enable this feature. It comes out of the box and if you have an app that is using the HtmlPlaceholder you just need to install it in OOB mode to see the same html that you are seeing when the application is hosted in the browser.   When I boot, my computer just tells me it can't detect graphic card (or something else) settings and it has to use the low graphics mode. Then it gives me four choices, but doesn't let me choose any of them. I can get my computer to boot by going to some sort of terminal mode and then typing sudo gdm. The other graphics manager I have is lightdm. I originally had the nVidia propriety driver, and I've tried bumblebee. Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M is my graphics card. Is there any way to fix this so I can use lightdm again?

• Screen is very dim on an Acer Aspire 6920Z

  I've been trying to figure this out for a week now, my laptops screen is on and working but you cannot see whats on the screen without shining a flashlight at it. I'm using a spare monitor by the VGA port right now to be able to use this laptop, which is kinda a pain. Been reading around a bit about this problem and it seems to be a common-ish problem it seems. I've tried to change the brightness which doesn't help whats so ever. It just happen one day after I turned off the laptop for the night. The screen flashes on for a bit at start up, then goes completely dim. Anyone with this problem and find a fix? You can search up this computers spec by the name/model in the title if you need hardware info. I never had this problem with the old Ubuntu 10.04.

• Can only run firefox 8.0 in safe mode [closed]

  This is a recent problem but I have no idea what caused it: I can only run firefox in safe mode. Any other mode, I get a completely khaki, unresponsive screen, that I have to forcibly terminate. I have uninstalled firefox, and then re-installed it via synaptic. That didn't seem to work. The problem occurs in all the four user accounts I have defined in the ubuntu. • Connecting/Removing a Second Monitor with Multiple Workspaces

  I am running 12.04 on a laptop. I use workspaces extensively to manage different projects. When I take my laptop home, I plug in an additional monitor. The problem I am having is that whenever I plug in the additional monitor, all of my windows, regardless of what workspace they were in before I connected the additional monitor, move to workspace 1. This forces me to go through all the windows and manually move the windows back to where I had them. I don't think adding a monitor to each workspace should cause windows to move around between workspaces. Any thoughts or ideas on how to fix this? Know of any workarounds? Thanks in advance!

• Backlit keyboard on Toshiba Satellite P755-S5184 doesn't work in Ubuntu 12.04

  I have the keyboard backlight turned on in bios to timer setting (1 second). When laptop boots the backlight works, but once ubuntu begins to load the backlights turn off. There is a function key combo that is supposed to turn it on (Fn +Z), hitting that brings up a notification balloon showing the backlit keyboard icon but it is grayed out. I tried using KeyTouch to try and get the backlight working but my laptop model isn't on the list. I'm new to Ubuntu, and have been searching the web and can't seem to find any answers that will work for my particular situation. Any information would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks!

  I run a TwinView, dual monitor system. I like to play games fullscreen on one of the monitors, not spanning both. With wine, this works by just setting it to desktop mode and setting the resolution to that of one screen. For OpenTTD, I used Compiz's Window Rules plugin. But I have a few native games that this doesn't work for. Today's experiment involved Prey (Doom 3 engine) but I've had similar issues with other ID engines. So in short: has anybody found a way of having Prey/OpenAreana/Doom3/etc run in windowed mode but with fullscreen decorations (that is to say, no borders and above the panel)?

• What is the typical setup for a laptop used for multi platform development?

  I am planning to build a new laptop for development for both Windows & Linux platforms. On Windows, my development would be primarily on .NET/C#/IIS/MSSQL Server. On Linux, preferably Ubuntu, my development would be on Ruby and Python. I am thinking of buying a laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed with 4GB RAM/Intel Core 2 Duo/320 GB HD & then thinking of running 2 VMs for both Windows and Linux development with the host OS as my work station. Of course, I would be running DBs and web servers on the respective platforms. Is this a typical setup? My only concern is running two VMs side by side. Not sure if this configuration would be optimal. Alternative would be to do my Windows development on the host Windows 7 OS. Any thoughts?

• Kiosk Mode Coding in Chromium

  I don't know how easy this would be, since I don't know anything about it, but I need an Ubuntu setup where the machine boots up, displays the login for a few seconds allowing a chance to log in as an admin, and then precedes to automatically log in to a user account which directly opens Chromium (any other browser is acceptable) in a kiosk mode where only the web content is visible, all Chromium keyboard shortcuts are disabled, and all but a select few websites are blocked, redirecting back to the home page after an "Unauthorized web page" warning comes up if the URL constraint is violated. Is it possible to code a kiosk setup like this, or am I asking for too much? If I'm simply uninformed, and there is already much documentation on anything like this, please redirect me to an appropriate page. If you can code or set up something like my description, please reply with step-by-step instructions, and instructions on how to modify the elements of the kiosk mode. Thank you in advance for any help. (Note: I'm currently using Ubuntu 10.04, but any distribution would work.)
