  • Meta package / quick reference for command line string manipulation tools?

    - by Dylan McCall
The latest version of the Scribes text editor lets us select some text, hit Alt+X, and then run an arbitrary command. For example, I can run the sort command and the selected text is replaced appropriately. This is quite useful but I am also not very well-versed in awk and the like. Is there something I can grab that will provide more of these commands like sort? Maybe a package with a whole bunch of handy, task-specific string manipulation commands?

  • Using irc in NetBeans IDE 7.2

    - by Geertjan
Turns out to be easy to use irc in NetBeans IDE 7.2. Install Irssi (I was able to do apt-get to install it), which has a handy guide here, and then use the Terminal window in NetBeans IDE (Window | Output | Terminal): In the above, do this: irssi /connect irc.freenode.net /join #netbeans Then, next time you have a problem in NetBeans IDE or there's some question you have about how to do something, just type your question in the Terminal window and someone will help you, if someone is there who knows the answer.

  • What version(s) of Android should I be targeting?

    - by Bill Osuch
If you're wondering about what screen sizes and flavors of Android are currently out in the wild, the Android Developers site has a handy little chart of both (each image below is hyperlinked to the page): So, as far as platforms go, there aren't many people still out there running less than 2.X... and you'd probably be safe not worrying about Small or Low Density screens. I'd be curious to know if any of the other app stores (Amazon, Archos, etc.) offer similar stats...

  • Switch between apps with keyboard only (not ALT+TAB or SUPER+<number>)

    - by brejoc
I'm looking for a way to switch between Apps with the keyboard only and not limited to some applications by defining shortcuts. Gnome3 offers the possibility to switch to (or start) an application by typing the app name. KDE allows this with krunner. The application lens in Unity does not offer this at all: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/1027792 Is there now way to master this very basic and handy functionality with Unity?

  • Gentoo Linux useful utilities

    - by Alakdae
I want to make a list of utilities that come in handy in Gentoo (general Linux tools available in all distributions also appreciated). What tools and commands do you use and consider helpful in administration of a Gentoo server? I will update the list with command from answers from time to time. eclean Utility for cleaning distfiles and binary packages. Usage example: eclean distfiles Usage example output: Cleans out the files in /usr/portage/distfiles. Pretty handy. Package: app-portage/gentoolkit eix Very useful tool for getting information about a package. Similar to "emerge -s" but much faster and more precise. Usage example: eix gentoolkit Usage example output: Show information about package such as: available versions, masked versions, installed versions and description. Package: app-portage/eix eix-test-obsolete Check system for obsolete, redundant, uninstalled entries in package.keywords, package.mask, package.unmask, package.use and package.cflags Usage example: eix-test-obsolete Usage example output: Shows non-matching entries, redundant entries, and uninstalled entries. Package: app-portage/eix equery Another very useful tool for getting information about packages (listing package files, checking which files belong to which package and much more) Usage example: equery b emerge Usage example output: Show which packages installed a file called emerge Package: app-portage/gentoolkit genlop Utility for extracting information about emerged ebuilds Usage example: genlop -l --date yesterday Usage example output: Show a list of packages that have been emerged yesterdayPackage: app-portage/genlop glsa-check Checks system if it's affected by GLSAs (security issues) Usage example: glsa-check -l affected Usage example output: List of GLSA that the system is affected by. • PHP/MySQL Performance Testing with Just PHP

    - by Mike Gifford
I'm trying to diagnose a server where the website is loading very slowly, but unfortunately my client has only provided me with FTP access. I've got FTP access so I can upload PHP scripts, but can't set up any other server side tools. I have access to phpMyAdmin, but not direct access to the MySQL server. It is also unfortunately a Windows server (and we've been a Linux shop for over a decade now). So, if I wan to evaluate MySQL & disk speed performance through PHP on a generic server, what is the best way to do this? There are already tools like: https://github.com/raphaelm/php-benchmark or https://github.com/InfinitySoft/php-benchmark But I'm surprised there isn't something that someone has already set up & configured to just run through and do some basic testing of a server's responsiveness. Every time we evaluate a new server environment it's handy to be able to compare it to an existing one quickly to see if there are any anomalies. I guess I'd just hoped that someone else had written up a script to do this already. I know I have, but that was before Github when there was a handy place to post scraps of code like this. Originally posted in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12321498/php-mysql-performance-testing-with-just-php but it was recommended that I re-post it here.
