  • What tools do people use to make programming tutorial videos?

    Hi folks, I'm wanting to make some yee-run-o-the-mill tutorial video's about some programming concepts and stuff i've been doing. Nothing special ... lots of peeps been doing it. What tools are people using to record and edit these videos? What resolutions / fonts / sizes do people generally use/set? The only tool I've had experience with is Camtasia - and i didn't mind it. But i've seen vid's (or live demo's) where people zoom in to code sections.. how do they do that? For final editing, do most people just do some simple power point presentation with some video snippets mashed in. cheers!

My question is, how (if at all) can Python compliment the skills of a typical C# developer working mainly with MS technologies on a Windows Platform. Some examples of typical C# dev on windows would be (SOA applications, web applications, windows services, automation, xml handling) Surely there must be some scenarios where knowing Python would help you get certain tasks done quicker or more efficiently than using traditional C# / MS technologies. If you know of any specific scenarios, then please share. And lastly should this question be a community wiki?

    Hay, i have a simple model class Manufacturer(models.Model): name = models.CharField() car_count = models.IntegerField() class Car(models.Model): maker = ForeignKey(Manufacturer) I want to update the car_count field when a car is added to a manufacturer, I'm aware i could just count the Manufacturer.car_set() to get the value, but i want the value to be stored within that car_count field.   • .NET framework is copied to 'compiler/CLR' and 'GAC?

    The book of CLR via C# has this line at page 76. When you install the .NET Framework, tow copies of Microsoft's assembly files are actuall installed. One set is installed into the compiler/CLR directory, and another set is installed into GAC subdirectory I could find the GAC at C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\assembly, but I couldn't find the compiler/CLR thing. What's the physical directory name of compiler/CLR? I mean, where is it? Why there are two GAC in assembly directory? I find GAC_32 and GAC_MSIL.

  • InvokeRequired not reliable?

    InvalidOperationException: Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'progressBar' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created ... Now this is not a nice way to start a day! not even if it's a Monday! So you have seen this and already thought, come on, this is an old one, just ask whether InvokeRequired before calling the method in the control, something like this: if (progressBar.InvokeRequired) {           progressBar.Invoke  ( new MethodInvoker( delegate {  progressBar.Value = 50;    }) ) }else      progressBar.Value = 50;    Unfortunately this was not working the way I would have expected, I got this error, debugged and though in debugging the InvokeRequired had become true , the error was thrown on the branch that did not required Invoke. So there was a scenario where InvokeRequired returned false and still accessing the control was not on the right thread ... Problem was that I kept showing and hiding the little form showing the progressbar. The progressbar was updating on an event  , ProgressChanged and I could not guarantee the little form was loaded by the time the event was thrown. So , spotted the problem, if none of the parents of the control you try to modify is created at the time of the method invoking, the InvokeRequired returns true! That causes your code to execute on the woring thread. Of course, updating UI before the win dow was created is not a legitimate action either, still I would have expected a different error. MSDN: "If the control's handle does not yet exist, InvokeRequired searches up the control's parent chain until it finds a control or form that does have a window handle. If no appropriate handle can be found, the InvokeRequired method returns false. This means that InvokeRequired can return false if Invoke is not required (the call occurs on the same thread), or if the control was created on a different thread but the control's handle has not yet been created."   • Option Button in Keyboard Layout > Input Sources is not pressable

    I would like to set the Caps-lock key as a Compose key, which you do, as far as I remember, by pressing the Options Button in Keyboard Layout Input Sources and then enabling the appropriate option there. That Button is not pressable though since I switched to 12.10. It did work in previous releases of Ubuntu. gnome-control-center puts out these errors, when I click on Keyboard Layout: (gnome-control-center:3645): common-cc-panel-WARNING **: Could not find current language '?\u0003C!\u007f' in the treeview (gnome-control-center:3645): common-cc-panel-WARNING **: locale '"en_US.UTF-8"' isn't valid I'm not sure if the errors are related though, maybe they are related to the "interface switching to chinese bug" which seems surprisingly widespread: Language changed to Chinese, how do I change it back?   • SBS 2003 stops to respond often due to limited memory

    I have a Windows SBS 2003 Std that regularly stops to respond (crashes), in about every 20th day. The only thing I can see in the logs (the one that are mailed to the administrator) is that used memory increases with about 30MB/day. The process that uses more and more memory is sqlservr. We don't have much installed on the server; a Point-Of-Sale-system that uses Pervasive SQL as database and an Accounting application. We just have 2GB of RAM and I could upgrade to 4GB but I think that this just delay the problem. When the server stops to respond, the screen saver cannot be deactivated, no DNS-look-ups is working so the client's can't access Internet. And applications on the server do not reply. And we have to press the power-button to restart the server. For the moment it has an uptime of 19 days and have 2 345MB in memory use (idle) and sqlservr is using 819 MB. So I guess it will crash soon. Is there any solution to this problem? Could I limit sqlservr to some memory?

  • Site to Site VPN problem, connection succesful data only oneway?

    To start things off, I'm not the actual Administrator for the VPN Server, but he is also at a loss so I thought I'd ask it here. I know it's a Cisco ASA Firewall/VPN. I have a router that connects to the Cisco VPN server, it does so succesfully. I can ping everything within the remote network and from the remote network into my own. I've been able to SSH into a remote server over VPN as well, it all seems to work; until there's some more data returned. A quick example would be an internal webserver. The default homepage simply redirects, so only sends back HTTP headers with a "Location:". I receive this on my computer, but when I request the actual page then (which isn't that big) I don't get a response at all - it just stalls. And it does this for other services as well, for example SSH. I can do a couple of things while connected, but if there's more than xx output it seems to do nothing. The connection remains active throughout all of this. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this before / know what the problem might be? Another user who has a site-to-site connection with this VPN using the -exact same setup- has no problems, the only difference is that I have around 200ms ping to the VPN server/network because of a very long distance (other continent).

I want to delete from multiple table in a single statement how will I do it? I want to update multiple table in a single statement how will I do it? The answer is – No, You cannot and you should not. SQL Server does not support deleting or updating from two tables in a single update. If you want to delete or update two different tables – you may want to write two different delete or update statements for it. This method has many issues – from the consistency of the data to SQL syntax. Now here is the real reason for this blog post – yesterday I was asked this question again and I replied my canned answer saying it is not possible and it should not be any way implemented that day. In the response to my reply I was pointed out to my own blog post where user suggested that I had previously mentioned this is possible and with demo example.   • Pet Store Loyalty Programs: I'm Not Loyal Yet!

    After two years of constantly being asked (aka "pestered) by my now eight-year-old daughter for a dog (or any pet that is more interactive than a goldfish), I've finally compromised with a hamster purely by chance. Friends of ours had recently brought home a female hamster, and (surprise, surprise) two weeks later, they were looking for homes for 11 baby hamster pups. Since the pups were not yet ready to be weaned from their mother, my daughter and I had several weeks to get ready -- and we spent that extra time visiting a number of local pet stores and purchasing an assortment of hamster books, toys, exercise equipment, food, bedding, and cage -- not cheap! Now, I'm usually an online shopper (i.e. I love reading user reviews and comparing prices), but for kids, there is absolutely no online substitute for actually walking into a store and physically picking out something you want. We have two competing pet shops within close proximity to where we live, and I signed up for their rewards programs to get discounts on select items. I'm sure it takes a while to get my data into the system (after all, I did fill out a form the old-fashioned way), but as it has been more than two weeks for one store and over a week for the other, the window of opportunity is getting smaller as we by now pretty much have most of what we think we need. Everything I've purchased has been purely hamster or small animal related, so in an ideal world, the stores would have me easily figured out as a hamster owner. Here is what I would be expecting of a loyalty rewards program: Point me to some useful links, either information provied by the company or external websites where I can learn more. Any value-add a business can provide to make my life easier makes me a much more loyal customer. What things can I expect as a new pet owner? Any hamster communities? Any hamster-related events? Any vets that specialize in small animals in the vicinity? Send me an email with other related products I may be interested in. Upsell and cross-sell to me. We've go the basics and a couple of luxuries, but at this point, I'm pretty excited (surprisingly) about the hamster, and my daughter is footing the bill with her birthday and Christmas money. She and I would be more than happy to spend her money! Get this information to me faster. As I mentioned, my window of opportunity is getting smaller, as eithe rmy daughter's money will run out on other things or we'll start losing the thrill of buying new hamster toys and treats. I realize this is easier said than done, and undoubtedly, the stores are getting value knowing my basic customer information and purchase history. Buth, they could really benefit by delivering a loyalty program that really earned my loyalty. "Goldeen" needs a new water bottle, yogurt chips, and chew toys as he doesn't seem to like the ones we bought. So for now, I'll just go to whichever store is the most convenient.
