• What impact would a young developer in a consultancy struggling on a project have?

  I am a youngish developer (working for 3 yrs). I took a job 3 months ago as an IT consultant (for the first time, I'm a consultant). In my first project, all went will till the later stages where I ran into problems with Windows/WMI (lack of documentation etc). As important as it is to not leave surprises for the client, this did happen. I was supposed to go back to finish the project about a month and a half ago, after getting a date scheduled, but this did not happen either. The project (code) was slightly rushed too and went through QA (no idea what the results are). My probation review is in a few weeks time, and I was wondering, what sort of impact would this have? My manager hasn't mentioned this project to me and apart from this, everything's been ok and he has even said, at the beginning, if you are tight on time just ask for more, so he has been accomodating (At this time, I was doing well, the problems came later).

• Ubuntu 12.04 - after update it boots in command line only (no windows manager)

  I have Ubuntu 12.04, which has been working great for me since I installed it a year ago. Yesterday I ran the updates that update manager recommended. (Last time I ran updates before was about a week ago). After the updates were installed, it asked me to reboot. So I rebooted it, and then it stopped at login prompt (as a command line, with no windows). I logged in and tried to manually start the windows manager, and the screen went blank, and stayed blank I waited several minutes, and then turned it off. How can I figure out what is the problem? Which logs should I check?

• Google is good or bad for programmer? [closed]

  Recently I was being interviewed by a company and faced one question. The interviewer asked me a question and at that time I didn't know the answer but if I had been asked about just 4 months ago, I could have answered it. The question was from new language that I learned just 4 months ago. But I just get overview of the language and just get started working on that. Whenever I face difficultly, I google it. That means we do not have to memorize the whole programming language book! So in that situation I felt that Google screwed my job! Not talking subjectively, Is it good to google all the time?

  The Mojarra 2.1.2 release was cut a few days ago. Here are the full Maven coordinates : api, impl. You can also get to the release notes and to the list of bugs fixed in this release. This is scheduled for inclusion into the upcoming GlassFish 3.1.1 release. In fact it's already integrated in the latest promoted build (#8) which also includes woodstox 4.1.1. Weld 1.1.1.Final has already been integrated a few builds ago. • A Better Way To Extract Date From DateTime Columns [SQL Server]

  Quite a long ago I wrote about a SQL Server programming tip on how to extract date part from a DATETIME column. The post discusses about using of T SQL function convert() to get date part. One of the readers of the post, tipped me about a better way of extracting date part and here is the SQL query he sent to us SELECT DateAdd(day, DateDiff(day, 0, getdate()), 0); In clean way this query trims off time part from the DATETIME value. I rate this solution better than the one I wrote long ago as this one does not depend on any string operations. According the commenter, this method is faster compared to the other. What do you say?   I have several situations where I need to control timeouts in a technical application. Either in a loop or as a simple check. Of course – handling this is really easy, but none of these is looking cute. To clarify, here is some C# (Pseudo) code: private DateTime girlWentIntoBathroom; girlWentIntoBathroom = DateTime.Now; do { // do something } while (girlWentIntoBathroom.AddSeconds(10) > DateTime.Now); or if (girlWentIntoBathroom.AddSeconds(10) > DateTime.Now) MessageBox.Show("Wait a little longer"); else MessageBox.Show("Knock louder"); Now I was inspired by something a saw in Ruby on StackOverflow: Now I’m wondering if this construct can be made more readable using extension methods. My goal is something that can be read like “If girlWentIntoBathroom is more than 10 seconds ago” 1st attempt if (girlWentIntoBathroom > (10).Seconds().Ago()) MessageBox.Show("Wait a little longer"); else MessageBox.Show("Knock louder"); So I wrote an extension for integer that converts the integer into a TimeSpan public static TimeSpan Seconds(this int amount) { return new TimeSpan(0, 0, amount); } After that, I wrote an extension for TimeSpan like this: public static DateTime Ago(this TimeSpan diff) { return DateTime.Now.Add(-diff); } This works fine so far, but has a great disadvantage. The logic is inverted! Since girlWentIntoBathroom is a timestamp in the past, the right side of the equation needs to count backwards: impossible. Just inverting the equation is no solution, because it will invert the read sentence as well. 2nd attempt So I tried something new: if (girlWentIntoBathroom.IsMoreThan(10).SecondsAgo()) MessageBox.Show("Knock louder"); else MessageBox.Show("Wait a little longer"); IsMoreThan() needs to transport the past timestamp as well as the span for the extension SecondsAgo(). It could be: public static DateWithIntegerSpan IsMoreThan(this DateTime baseTime, int span) { return new DateWithIntegerSpan() { Date = baseTime, Span = span }; } Where DateWithIntegerSpan is simply: public class DateWithIntegerSpan { public DateTime Date {get; set;} public int Span { get; set; } } And SecondsAgo() is public static bool SecondsAgo(this DateWithIntegerSpan dateAndSpan) { return dateAndSpan.Date.Add(new TimeSpan(0, 0, dateAndSpan.Span)) < DateTime.Now; } Using this approach, the English sentence matches the expected behavior. But the disadvantage is, that I need a helping class (DateWithIntegerSpan). Has anyone an idea to make checking timeouts look more cute and closer to a readable sentence? Am I a little too insane thinking about something minor like this?

  Hi, I have a product database and I am displaying trying to display them as clean URLs, below is example product names: PAUL MITCHELL FOAMING POMADE (150ml) American Crew Classic Gents Pomade 85g Tigi Catwalk Texturizing Pomade 50ml What I need to do is display like below in the URL structrue: www.example.com/products/paul-mitchell-foaming-gel(150ml) The problem I have is I want to do the following: Remove anything with braquets(and the braquets) Remove any numbers next to g or ml e.g. 400ml, 10g etc... I have been banging my head trying different string replaces but cant get it right, I would really appreciate some help. Cheers

I just bought this domain at GoDaddy (48 hours ago): http://formatron.net/ My hosting provider is Webhostingpad.com. I Added their name servers to GoDaddy 48 hours ago. More information in this previous question. It is working in my computer but some people just see a "cannot found error." What could be the reason? EDIT: I checked on my mobile phone and it works.

• How to re-partition?

  I switched from Windows to Ubuntu 4 months ago and I am really happy with it. I set up a dual-boot system (since I wasn´t sure how it will end up with me and Ubuntu). After merging from Citavi to Zotero I need windows only for my scanner. The problem I have now is, that the windows partion is so big with lots of unused space and the ubuntu partition are quite small - I should have though about this problem 4 months ago... My partitions look like this: Where sda3 is the windows partition, sda5 is Ubuntu and sda7 is a data partition. I want to shrink sda3 and free some space for sda5 and sda3. How can this be done safely (and easily)?

• How to delete Analytics property from list in Webmaster Tools?

  When I look at the Google Analytics Property page in Webmaster Tools (where you associate a Google Analytics web property with a Webmaster Tools site), I see a list of a bunch of properties with weird names. They are test properties from when we were trying things out years ago. I can't view them or change their name in Analytics because they don't exist there. All their profiles were deleted years ago. Is there a way to remove these from the list in Webmaster Tools? Or, alternatively, a way to view them again in Analytics so I can give them a better name, at least. I know this doesn't matter in the big scheme of things, but I hate clutter.

• Problem installing Ubuntu 13.10 alongside Windows 8

  What I have: Sony Vaio laptop (SVE1512E6EW) with preinstalled Windows 8. I disabled Secure Boot some time ago in BIOS. I already had Ubuntu (previous version) installed on it, but removed it some time ago. After that, the default Windows boot menu is showing up everytime I boot up computer, and the only entry is Windows 8. What I did: Burned Ubuntu 13.10 DVD Restarted computer and booted from it Chosen Install Ubuntu (not Try Ubuntu) Created new ext4 partition from free space Installed Ubuntu on it What happened: After the installation I restarted computer. Windows default boot menu showed up (just as before) and the only entry was still Windows 8. If you have any additional questions I will try to answer them as fast as possible.

• Wine doesn't work (Problem with the mount manager)

  I didn't know exactly when the problem occurred. My Wine worked well a couple days ago. Then, I was just about to install some Windows programs hours ago but I got nothing. No installer window showed up, and no error report. It just won't work. And now I just found where the problem is (screenshot below), but I don't know how to fix it. Any idea? • How can I copy a file from one partition to another?

  I started with linux a year ago. Few weeks ago it was my idea to install the efi stubloader. I used an LiveCd to freshly install ubuntu 12.10, and studied the articles of www.rodsbooks.com inside out. The problem I am facing is that few files need to be copied from sda2 (Ext) to sda1 (fat32). Silly, that should not be difficullt, but I can not find a way to do it...(in a way I understand it)? Anyboddy? If you have installed a EFI stubloader with reFind or efibootmgr,...please help me.

• Search for files after a relative date using Windows search

  I am looking for a way to save a search that includes a relative date. Specifically I am looking for a way to save a search that matches files that have a modification date that is 7 days ago. I have read the Windows Search Advanced Query Syntax document and I am not seeing a way to say 7 days ago. The numbers and ranges section does mention that relative dates are possible. The problem is that the relative dates described there do not fit the criteria I need. The lastweek almost looks like what I want except if I run a query like after:lastweek on a Monday it will only show my file that have been modified since Sunday at 12:00. The lastweek/lastmonth seem to relative to the start of the week/month which is not what I need. Multi-word relative dates: week, next month, last week, past month, or coming year. The values can also be entered contracted, as follows: thisweek, nextmonth, lastweek, pastmonth, comingyear. One nice thing about saved searches is that they are stored as an XML document and the file format is documented. I am not seeing how to form a correct value for a datetime. If I was able to understand this format, I suspect I could use a text editor and created a saved search that does what I want. Fragment from the examples: <conditions> <condition type="leafCondition" valuetype="System.StructuredQueryType.DateTime" property="System.DateModified" operator="imp" value="R00UUUUUUUUZZXD-30NU" propertyType="wstr" /> </conditions> To summarize I am looking for an answer to one or both of these questions How do I make a query for '7 days ago' using the standard syntax? How is the DateTime stored in a saved search?

• Can I have damaged a CPU ?

  Hey guys, This is a question I asked on Anantech forums, but I just discovered this community and think this question would fit right in. Here goes: I built a PC around a Q9550 1 1/2 years ago (MoBo is an Asus P5Q deluxe). Specs give 2.83GHz, OC'ed it to 3.40 GHZ without any problem (or so I thought) till 2 months ago. Cooling is provided by stock Intel Fan... 2 Months ago, I began to see random crashes, bios saying CPU overheat error... PC would reboot at OC'ed speed without any problem. Since last saturday and a few more crashes, PC won't reboot at 3.40 GHz, and even at stock speed (2.83 GHz), I got core temperatures of (60 C idle, 95 C under load) on the first two cores. This is the 4 core temperatures I am talking about, not the T-CPU which obvioulsy is lower. Fan is running at a steady 2000 RPM. Questions for you : 1. Is 2000 RPM the normal speed of the Intel fan or is my fan somehow broken (which could explain the overheating). In this case, any recommendation for a good fan for OCing ? 2. Hypothesis I fear is the right one: can the CPU have been slowly damaged over time by this OCing, meaning there is nothing much to do except waiting for it to die ? (As a side note, I am surprised that the 9550 is still around 300 $CDN here... Thought it would have been cheaper with all those i3/i5/i7 around). Any help or advice would be more than welcome...

• OS X superuser folders automatically created. Perusers launchd process appears to kill 501

  New Apple laptop OSX 10.8.2. I have used OS X but many years previously, and am not familiar with subtleties or changes in com.apple.launchd.peruser.x... I have previously (and in retrospect, foolishly) made changes to these rapidly spawned new peruser accounts (my initial reaction was that if ipfw was disabled, then I might well be under hacker attack, which I have dealt with, years ago), but I believe I was wrong, and the results of my efforts at preserving the system's integrity have in fact been destructive, overreactive, and have resulted in much work to restore. My understanding from other posts is that superuser protocols have changed quite dramatically since I bought the first developer version of OS X many years ago. Haven't developed on Apple much since then, w/ exception of WebObjects (IMO, much underrated at that time, and was more user friendly than ASP (prior to .NET, I vaguely recall). Creation of apparently nasty peruser folders appear to confound 501 process, which logs inability to find firewall (ipfw). Can someone help me with this? I am concerned that either the system is improperly configured, an application was improperly installed (although there is little here beyond Apple's SDK, which I find quite accommodating and intuitive). Still, I am a novice, only sporadically develop at this time, and would really just like to see this system running happily. Please offer assistance, in the form of potential info sources, or if you have had a similar experience, then perhaps scripts to suss out this issue. I do not wish to damage the system, but Apple's Developer connection and discussion threads do not appear to have dealt with this particular issue recently... Although I may well have missed something you have not - please apprise. Any assistance on this issue is very much appreciated - by an old guy, who wants to do some things which were fun about 20 years ago.

• Computer will not boot - disk read error - cannot boot from HD or DVD

  This is a 3 year-old system: HP a1640n. There have been no issues with it in the past. I added a video card 2 years ago, and more memory 1 year ago, both without issues. There haven't been any recent hardware changes. I did install Win7 in Oct., but there were no issues with that either. I used the computer fine two nights ago, and turned it off. Yesterday, I tried to turn it on, and got the error: "A Disk Read Error Occurred. Press CTRL ALT DEL to restart" So I restart, see the initial start screen (HP) and enter the BIOS. The hard drive and dvd drive appear to be listed, but the names are gibberish text. I tried putting a Windows disk in the dvd drive, and continued with the boot, but the disk did not get recognized. Even though the BIOS was set to check for optical media before the hard drive. Back to the error screen. If the computer would boot from a cd or dvd, I would just figure the hard drive needed replacing. But both being problematic worries me. Is this a matter of replacing both the hard drive and dvd drive, or might it be an indication of a bigger problem? Thanks for any advice.
