• Best/Preferred software for photography.

  I am just getting into photography as a hobby, and am looking for some good tools for image uploading/browsing/editing. I am currently using the Canon EOS utility that came with the camera for uploading, Picasa for browsing, and GIMP for editing. Pros: The files are stored using the standard file system (no proprietary library like iPhoto) Great photo editing possibilities Free (except the Canon Utility, but that was bundled) Cons: Multiple programs Hard to view the Exif Data (I like the way that iPhoto displays the data) Over-simplified editing tools in Picasa What other tools should I look into? Also, I occasionally shoot in RAW, and would prefer Mac support (better monitor), but I also have windows and linux machines.

• General video performance affected on Mac OSX 10.5 (PowerBook G4)

  Hi all, I'm quite new to Mac and I just got a PowerBook G4 for free. I installed OSX 10.5 on it and for the first two weeks, everything was going kinda smooth even if this is similar to a P3. I'm not expecting awsome video performance but at least be able to watch some videos from Youtube. Yesterday night, I installed Office 2008 for mac and this morning, even after a reboot, my computer is way much slower that I used to know. I watched a youtube video and the framerate was 1:1. I also noticed it on flash adds, it's way slower! Is there anything that I can do to increase video performance, see what's the process list running and taking more GPU or CPU, what's taking more ram and stuff like that?! What do you guys, Mac pros, would do on an old laptop with OSX 10.5 Thanks!

• One network, two macbooks, one is fast and the other is slow

  I really need help for my friend. I know next to nothing about computers. My roommate and I both have macbook pros from the same year running OS X, are both connecting wirelessly to the same xfinity wifi, and while mine runs perfectly fine, my roommate complains that his works very slowly and times out every few seconds. I can't seem to figure out why this is. He is trying to get me to switch internet providers because he is convinced that it is their problem, but this cannot possibly be the issue since it works great on mine. He has an xbox hooked up to the wifi that he says also works poorly. I really can't see switching providers given that I am experiencing absolutely zero problems. How can I help my friend?

  I am looking for a book which can explain pros and cons of different combination of configurations/policies of storage Arrays and may also suggest some best practices for certain scenarios for e.g. when data availability & security is very important. There are a lot of "books for dummy" but they don't go in depth, I am a more of developer so I would like to understand how and why exactly it works beneath policies & configuration settings. • What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a hosted firewall?

  Would you rather have your firewall hosted or in house if you've got the skills to manage it? We currently have 6 remote offices and 2 different ISP's, one private network and our firewall (Watchguard, licenses are due to expire) is also our main gateway. I don't see how a hosted firewall (in this case Fortinet) is going to work for us especially when it's cheaper to buy our own firewall and the transition from one ISP to a new provider will take some time because our current contracts aren't due to expire soon. What are to pros and cons of having a firewall hosted by your ISP in general?

  We are setting up TACACS+ in our network which is a mix of Cisco AP's and other brands. However we have a centralized managemnet system which allows our customers to configure services. Hence we would like to setup a tacacs+ server integrated with some central system. We have two options: Integrate with a central Database server which stores the user configuration. OR Integrate with a LDAP Server. Which is a better solution? Can you please suggest the pros and cons of using LDAP or Database? TIA Sachin

• Supervisor VS cronjob

  Actually I'm using supervisor to monitor a process and restart it when it stops for some reason. The problem is that in case of a supervisor crash the process stops get monitored. So I thought to schedule a cronjob to check supervisor is running, and eventually restart it. The next thing I'm considering is to get rid of supervisor and check my process directly from the cronjob. I read that sometimes supervisor uses too much memory (to be verified, though). What are the pros in having supervisor VS cronjob monitoring the process?

  I would like to know if we can setup an Active-Active IIS Cluster using Windows Cluster services that shares a common storage to store web content and WITHOUT the use of Windows NLB. I'm aware that this may not be a best practice or not a recommended setup, however, the setup is to be configured as below: Two web servers running IIS 7.5 (needs a common storage for web content) for HA and another set of two servers for sql cluster in active-passive mode for HA. In addition, I tried refit, but ended with "Missing operating system" error. Here is basically the layout of my bootable under PC Ubuntu USB drive (using MBR): Partition 1 (ext3, bootable) - Ubuntu Linux 32 bit, contains also grub2 bootloader. Partition 2 (ext3) - Ubuntu Linux 64 bit. Partition 3 (fat32) - contains data. What would be the best way to enable this drive to boot under Mac OS X? And if refit has to be used, could I simply have one more partition on the USB drive containing it? Thanks!

• How does the build quality of laptops compare?

  I'm looking to replace my 5 year old laptop. I want my next laptop to endure at least this long. I typically have Thunderbird, Firefox, Eclipse Java IDE, Skype, a ssh session, and Apache Tomcat running. I'm currently running Karmic Ubuntu, but am agnostic about operating system and would move to Win 7 or OS X. I frequently travel with this computer. I also value battery longevity and power conservation (if possible). Above all I'm looking to minimize cost. I think the hardware that best meets my needs is an Intel i7 processor, 8 GB RAM, 100GB @7200 rpm or SSD hardrive, and about 15 inch monitor. These specs are met by most brands. Does anyone know specific pros/cons and build quality for Macbook Pro, Lenovo Thinkpad (W510 or T510), Sony's VPC-F1190, and ASUS G Series G73JH-X1 NoteBook? Are all i7 processors created equal? Do you have other suggestion that meet my needs?

We are planning to migrate just the database server, a provider said us the migration would be better to 2005 first, and then to 2008, because "the SQL Server 2008 is best suited for Windows Server 2008". Which are the pros and cons of each of these approaches? • Packaging python software with custom dependencies

  Hi, I'm looking for a good way to package a Python application that is going to be deployed on a Debian server. The application itself depends on some modules which are not included in base Debian repository, although they might be in the future. This creates some problems... I depend on some patches to those modules. If the original module gets installed one day, the application will break. However if I install everything I need in a virtualenv just for that application, I lose the ability to upgrade Python itself (in case of security updates). The third option would be to rename my fork of the upstream module and just treat it as a completely separate one. But that would mean changing the code (not much work, but it wouldn't be that clean / universal anymore). Are there any other options that I missed? Are there any pros / cons I didn't see in the solutions above?

• 'server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool' error

  Currently users at my company are unable to access their home folder (or any folder on our domain controller). I am working remotely and cant physically access the machine until tomorrow morning, but I can access it with RDC. When I attempt to ping other machines on our network from the machine in question (connected with RDC), I immediately get the error PING: transmit failed. error code 1450. Event Viewer is full of 2019 errors: The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the pool was empty Does anyone have experience with this specific issue? I have found some info with Google, but would like to hear what the pros at SF have top say. This is a Windows 2000 server.

• Software/FakeRAID: Windows 8 Disk Mirroring vs Intel Onboard

  So Windows 8 is out and I have a new motherboard. I wish to create a RAID 1 coupling between two HDDs -- for storage purposes only (my OS is on an SSD) -- but I don't know which is the best route to take. My motherboard (Z77 chipset) comes with the age old Intel Fake RAID, but since I only wish to use my RAID for storage, I wondered if I might be better to use Windows 8 Disk Mirroring. Can anyone advise which is better? Or perhaps the pros and cons of each, if that's too contentious? I just can't see the benefit of FakeRAID.   I'm a programmer trying to fill a big hole in my understanding of networking basics. I've been reading a good book (Networking Bible by Sosinki) but I have been finding that there is a lot of "assumed" information contained, where terms/concepts are thrown at the reader without a proper introduction to them. I understand that a "route" is a path through a network. But I am struggling with visualizing some routing-based concepts. Namely: How do routes actually manifest themselves in the hardware? Are they just a list of IP addresses that get computed at the network layer, and then executed by the transport? What kind of data exists in a so-caleld routing table? Is a routing-table just the mechanism for holding these lists of IP address (read above)? What are the performance pros/cons for having a static route, as opposed to a dynamic route?

Because the IT staffs in my 10 sites are not capable enough and the steps taken to setup those "in-house project" are also complicated What are the cons I can forsee ? • Windows 7 on 1st Gen Macbook Pro (Q4-2008), power management problems.

  I have the first generation macbook pro, purchased Q4 2008. I've been trying to run Windows 7 and can get it all installed great with the BootCamp 3.1 64 bit drivers however ... power management isn't great. The screen and keyboard don't automatically dim - the laptop gets too hot. I noticed on some newer macbook pros that windows 7 works perfectly and the above doesn't happen. Does anyone know if there really is a hardware issue with this 1st gen or is there some firmware update I can use to fix this? Thanks!

Pros: 8.0.5.0 Allows Fn+F9 to function, which allows quick touchpad disabling. Cons: Cannot update; "Your driver is up to date." I want to play and type on this notebook laptop without excessive palm strokes on the touchpad. I have that name there, showing that this is a touchpad (PS/2) I do not want nor want to use. We have two solutions: Use phpsass which is a php script(but it has some bugs) Use Ruby Compiler which most of wordpress plugins use this I noticed that plugins which use Ruby need to have PHP proc_open function enabled on server. My question is what are Pros and Cons of using Ruby compiler on servers? and are most of shared web hosts support Ruby and have PHP proc_open function enabled by default?
