• Single domain name potentially resolving to multiple servers

  first time here at Server Fault, and I apologize in advance that this domain stuff is not really my strength. Any and all suggestions are much appreciated. I am completely lost and incredibly tired! I've inherited an incredibly convoluted system from my predecessor, and I'm trying to find a way to solve it - or I need to be told that it just isn't possible. I've got an old site on ServerA (some kind of Linux distribution), with the domain SomeDomain.com There is a new site sitting on ServerB (Ubuntu), with the intention of having SomeDomain.com to serve it in the future (it is replacing the old site) ServerA also has a web app that is currently in use by other departments within the company (accessible at SomeDomain.com/web-app/) The goal: To have SomeDomain.com and all extensions of this domain name (sub-domains, URL's etc.) serve the new site on ServerB. BUT, the URL SomeDomain.com/web-app/ must serve the Web App on ServerA. The Catch: The ServerA is a shared server with a hosting company with VERY limiting restrictions in place - I cannot adjust DNS settings (apart from Name servers - but cannot set A records or anything, I have full access to ServerB to do as I wish). Therefore the web-app MUST be served from SomeDomain.com/web-app/ and not from a sub-domain or anything. These limitations make migrating the web-app from Server A to Server B rather undesirable, AND this web-app will be replaced in the near future, so it isn't worth the effort right now. Therefore, ultimately I will want 1 domain name to resolve to Server B's IP address most of the time, but in the event that the URL is SomeDomain.com/web-app/, it should resolve to Server A's IP. Note: The domain names don't, technically, have to resolve to one IP or another - but ultimately the URL's must stay consistent Some things I have tried: I've looked into mod_rewrite and .htaccess to try and achieve this effect, but it doesn't look like it's going to work for me - but I may have done it wrong (On Server B, I just checked if the request URI was /web-app/ and tried to serve the /web-app/ folder on Server A) I do have the ability to modify the name servers on both servers I am not able to make a sub domain on Server A that points back to Server A (I assume because the hosting company's servers use the URL to determine what site the serve). I figured this could be good as I'd could set an A record on Server B to point to the web app on Server A - but alas, Server A requires SomeDomain.com. If there is any more information I can give, please let me know. I need a nudge in the right direction, ideas or a solution.

• Restart single uWSGI application (when it's in emperor mode)

  I'm running uWSGI in emperor mode to host a bunch of Django sites based on their individual configs. These are supposed to update when it detects a change in the config file and this largely works when I just touch uwsgi.ini the relevant file. But occasionally I'll mess something up in the Django site and the server won't load. Yeah, yeah, I should be testing better but that's not really the point. When this happens, uWSGI seems to mark the site as dead and stops trying to run it (seems to make sense). Even after I fix the underlying issue, no amount of touching will get that site's uWSGI process up and running. I have to reload the whole uWSGI server (knocking dozens of sites out at once for a few seconds). Is there a way to force uWSGI to just reload one of its sites?

• Direct access to website's database with single click?

  I have noticed that when selecting options (drop down menus, radio buttons etc) on some websites you see an ever more complex URL being created and then you can use that URL to access that website at a later date and go straight to the page with your desired options. Unfortunately on other websites the URL remains fixed and you appear to have no choice but to select the options all over again. I was wondering if there was some utility that would help automate this process.

• Launching multiple applications with a single command/script/shortcut

  I realized a few days ago that every time I sit down at work, I do a few things after unlocking my computer. First, I open up Firefox, then I open up Chrome, then I log in to Digsby. I realized I could probably save repeating this daily by writing a small batch script to open up Firefox and Chrome , but I couldn't figure out how to make it work.. and since the whole effort is to save time I don't want to bash my head around in the windows command prompt to do it. I also tired this in powershell but ran in to a bunch of security nonsense. Is there a way to do this that I am missing? Bonus points if somebody has figured out how to manipulate Digsby via COM , scripting, or python =)

• Eliminate single point of failure for webservers?

  I know in DNS, that each of the DNS servers will be tried to see if they will respond I know in email that in the event of a failure it will go to the next one in the list or it will hold the mail for a period of time As far as I know,, in webservers,, the browser will get one of the webserver IP addresses and try it and if it fails it will give up. Is this correct? If so,, then the only way to direct traffic away from a failed IP address would be with the DNS servers.. and even that would not update immediately?

• Powershell access a single value in a table

  this should be a really easy one but i can't seem to find an easy way. For example, in powershell and am using a CSV file, which is then used to look up some configuration data based on an ID. Here is what I have now, it works, but there has got to be a better way. $configList = import-csv "C:\myconfig.csv" $id = "5001" $configList | where-object {$_.id -eq $id} | foreach-object{ $configData = $_.configData} If use format-table etc, I always get the column header, which I would then have to cut off. Again, this has got to be really easy and this isn't a show stopper. But there has to be a better way to get just the data out of a table without the column header.

  I am looking for a way to make iptables only accept requests for my domain name and reject the others. • Replace single character in windows filenames

  I have a Win2k3 server that has a whole bunch of filenames that need renamed. Basically, I just need all - (dashes) replaced with _ (underscores), no matter where they are in the string. Assume that there are no duplicates. I can do this on my mac with a little script but the files are too large and crazy to transfer to my mac, rename, then go back to the server. Would love to do this in a command shell and not have to download a renamer or any add'l software. Thanks!

  I am trying to create a dependent drop down list for a High School. The User will select cell A1, Click on Hallway 3(for example), then the user will click on cell A1 again and then select the Room #, 325 (for example). The final result should be that cell A1 shows 325. I can create the first drop down list, but the second part is where I am having great trouble. I am using Excel 2010. Any help would be appreciated. • Single email Stuck in Backend Exchange Queue

  I have an outgoing message that has and is stuck in a queue on my backend mail server. The queue is: Internet Mail SMTP Connector (MY_FRONT_END_SERVER_NAME)-524350ff... It is in state retry with 183 failures. It is only one message and all other mail is flowing. The message is not particularly large. My limited understanding, a guess really, is that this message should get handed off to the front end mail server and sent to the remote hosts for which it is destined, so it should even matter if the remote host is up. However, I can telnet to the smtp provider of that host. How can I find out why it is stuck in this queue, and can I force it out somehow (unfreeze doesn't help me)?

  I have a bunch of scripts, but some of them are higher priority than others: /var/www/normal-priority/script1.pl /var/www/normal-priority/script2.pl /var/www/normal-priority/script3.pl and /var/www/high-priority/script1.pl /var/www/high-priority/script2.pl /var/www/high-priority/script3.pl All running under mod-perl. They reside in separate directories. From time to time, the normal-priority scripts get very busy, and the httpd servers "swamp out" the less frequently called high priority ones. Is it possible to set aside n httpd servers so that they only listen for the "high priority" scripts?

• Apache with multiple domains, single IP, VirtualHost is catching the wrong traffic

  I have a SOAP web service I am providing on a apache web server. There are 6 different clients (IPs) that request data and 3 of them are hitting the wrong domain. I am trying to find a way to log which domain name the requests are coming from. Details: ServerA is the primary ServerB is the backup domain1.com - the domain the web service is on domain2.com - a seperate domain that server seperate content on ServerB ServerA is standalone for now with its own IP and DNS from domain1.com. This works for everyone. ServerB is a backup for the web service, but it already hosts domain2.com. I added entries into the apache configuration file like: <VirtualHost *:443> ServerName domain2.com DocumentRoot /var/www/html/ CustomLog logs/access_log_domain2443 common ErrorLog logs/ssl_error_log_domain2443 LogLevel debug SSLEngine on ... etc SSL directives ... </VirtualHost> I have these for both 80 and 443 for domain1 and domain2 with domain1 being second. The problem is when we switch DNS for domain1 from ServerA to ServerB, 3 out of the 6 clients show up in the debug logs as hitting domain2.com instead of domain1.com and fail their web service request because domain2.com is first in the apache configuration file and catching all requests that don't match other virtualhosts, namely domain1.com. I don't know if they are hitting www.domain1.com, domain1.com (although I added entries for both) or using the external IP address or something else. Is there a way to see which URL they are hitting not just the page request or someother way to see why the first domain is catching traffic meant for the second listed domain? In the meantime, I've put domain1.com higher in the apache configuration than domain2.com. Now it catches the requests for all clients and works, however I don't know what it is catching and would like to make domain2.com the first entry again with a correct entry for domain1.com, for however they are hitting it.   I'm using Debian Lenny and I want to tunnel rtorrent only through a OpenVPN tunnel. I have a tunnel running, the config file looks like this: client dev tun proto udp remote openvpn.xxx.com 1194 resolv-retry infinite nobind persist-key persist-tun ca /etc/openvpn/xxx/keys/ca.crt cert /etc/openvpn/xxx/keys/client.crt key /etc/openvpn/xxx/keys/client.key tls-auth /etc/openvpn/xxx/keys/tls.key 1 ns-cert-type server comp-lzo verb 3 auth-user-pass script-security 3 reneg-sec 0 My idea is that I could run a sockd proxy internally that redirects traffic to the openvpn tunnel. I could use the *nix "proxifier" application "tsocks" to make it possible for rtorrent to connect through that proxy (as rtorrent doesn't support proxies). I have trouble configuring sockd as my IP inside the VPN changes every time I connect. This is a config file someone said would help: http://ircpimps.org/sockd.conf As my IP changes at each connect I don't know what to put in that config file. I have no control over the host side config file. Any help wanted. Any other method is very welcome.

• WD Elements Desktop External - Not recognised on a single computer

  My WD Elements Desktop External is no longer recognised on my main computer. It has worked fine in the past, but now all of a sudden is not detected. It does not prompt when plugged in, nor does it show up in the disc management interface or the device manager. It appears to be aware that it is plugged in however as the light on the external blinks rapidly for a short while after being plugged in. The strangest thing however is that it works fine on other computers, including my family computers and my laptop. I have attempted to troubleshoot the issue by trying various USB devices in multiple ports on each system to see if there is any correlation with the issue, but have come up with nothing that gives me an idea of what is going on. I have also attempted to format the external using my laptop, but that has not helped either. If anyone has had a similar issue, or knows of any potential solutions, please post your advice.   My goal is to be able to make a connection to one, and only one, website through a proxy. Everything else should be dropped. I have been able to do this successfully without a proxy with this code: ./iptables -I INPUT 1 -i lo -j ACCEPT ./iptabels -A OUTPUT -p udp --dport 53 -j ACCEPT ./iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp -d www.website.com --dport 80 -j ACCEPT ./iptables -A INPUT -m conntrack --cstate ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT ./iptables -P INPUT DROP ./iptables -P OUTPUT DROP How could I do the same thing except redirect the traffic to port 8080 somewhere? I've been trying to redirect in the PREROUTING chain in the nat table. I'm unsure if this is the proper place to do that tho. Thanks for your help!

  At my university, one of the wireless access points is failing. When something tries to associate to the network using that access point, it deassociates the client, claiming 802.1X authentication failure. Other access points do work normally using the same credentials. The issue has been reported, but after a month it still has still not been fixed. Now, I'm looking for a way to blacklist the access point's BSSID, so the OS prefers other access points on the same SSID. How can I blacklist specific BSSIDs in either Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Windows 7?

  One of my coworkers just got a new laptop running Windows 7 Pro x64. We use a GPO to deploy the printers to every system, but for some reason it is not working on this system. I have been breaking my head over this for the past 3 hours now without any result. The strange thing is that gpresult /H seems to indicate that the GPO did run.   I have set up a windows 2008 R2 server to route email from Exchange 2010 using SMTP Server in IIS. I have 3 seperate domains and would like to route each one through a different internal and external IP for (IP Reputation etc), at the minute it is only using the primary IP on the server to route email externally. • How to single click and select text?

  I am having a issue I have never experienced until recently, I believe (hoping) it is just a setting I can change? The issue: When I left click and hold the left mouse button down and slide the mouse around to select text in a document or webpage, it works as far as selecting the text, however when I release the left button , it does not stop selecting more text. Instead I must hit the left button again to stop it from selecting more text. This is very annoying, at first I thought I just had a faulty mouse but I just bought a new mouse and it is the same problem. I am running windows 7 pro Please help, hoping it is something simple I overlooked?
