  • VMWare ESXi virtual machine can contact the gateway but not the DNS server

    I am having a bit of a strange issue. I have a VMWare ESXi server with two virtual machines running on it. They are running just fine and can communicate on the network without a problem. I am now trying to add a third. I am installing Ubuntu 8.04 Server. I assign it a static IP address and it's a fresh installation. Once installed I can ping the gateway but I cannot ping the DNS server. It's on the same network with the other two VMs which are communicating just fine. I have tried to reinstall the operating system but it still fails to connect. Here is /etc/network/interfaces auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.23 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.1.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255 gateway 192.168.1.1 dns-nameservers 208.67.222.222 #opendns dns-search mydomain.com Here is route Destination | Gateway | Genmask | Flags | Metric | Ref | Use | Iface localnet | * | 255.255.255.0 | U | 0 | 0 | 0 | eth0 default | 192.168.1.1 | 0.0.0.0 | UG | 100 | 0 | 0 | eth0 Since I'm running this behind a FortiGate this is what the sniff command gives me when I try to ping 208.67.222.222 arp who-has 192.168.1.1 tell 192.168.1.23 arp reply 192.168.1.1 is-at MAC 192.168.1.23 -> 208.67.222.222: icmp: echo request 192.168.1.23 -> 208.67.222.222: icmp: echo request 192.168.1.23 -> 208.67.222.222: icmp: echo request 192.168.1.23 -> 208.67.222.222: icmp: echo request 192.168.1.23 -> 208.67.222.222: icmp: echo request As you can see it looks like I never get a response. One interesting thing I notice is the arp reply's MAC doesn't look right. I have cleared the FortiGate's ARP cache though and checked the entry and it seems correct. The MAC it lists is the one for the router. However if I ping from a different virtual machine that is also Ubuntu 8.04 with a nearly identical configuration I get this. 192.168.1.22 -> 208.67.222.222: icmp: echo request 208.67.222.222 -> 192.168.1.22: icmp: echo reply 192.168.1.22 -> 208.67.222.222: icmp: echo request 208.67.222.222 -> 192.168.1.22: icmp: echo reply 192.168.1.22 -> 208.67.222.222: icmp: echo request 208.67.222.222 -> 192.168.1.22: icmp: echo reply So, what could I be missing?   • How To Map Fn+Key (Multiple Keys) To Other Key in Windows?

    I've got a ThinkPad W530 laptop, which replaces the Application Key (also known as Menu Key or Mouse Right Click key, usually between Right Alt and Right Ctrl) with the Print Screen key. So, I need to replace Prt/Scr with Application key. That's easy, all key mapping software like SharpKeys or whatever can do that. There are even a few threads in SuperUser about dozen of those. But then, the different part to this question from the others (which is why it's not a duplicate, I think) is that I also don't want to completely lose the Prt/Scr key. I'm thinking about replacing it with either: Fn + Prt/Scr Fn + F2 These seemed to have no special meaning, so, I'm not overriding anything, just adding functionality to either of them (one of them, not both), to be the new Prt/Scr key. I couldn't find any key mapping software that can detect or let me select more than one key to map, even when the other key is something like Fn key (although they all can map Fn key itself, without combination). I know it may make sense why this restriction exists, but it'll be really useful if I can override it though. Do you know any program that can do that? Thanks a lot.

In the process I removed the saved credentials, which are just a default local login to the VM. I need to know how to set this so that the VM auto logs in with the domain account credentials used to log into the physical computer. Google hasn't helped me find the answer.

  • Alternative to arrow keys in Google Chrome location bar

    I like Google Chrome because it is fast but I don't like using the arrow keys in the location bar to complete URLs. Is there any extension, or setting I'm missing, that allows me to use the Tab key (or other customizable key) for completion like in Firefox? I am an Emacs user and am aware of Conkeror. I just wanted to give Google Chrome a fair chance. Edit: I'm using version 4.0.266.0 on Linux.

    I am having trouble using my guest (Windows XP SP3) to communicate over TCP/IP to the host computer (Windows 7) using Virtual PC 2007. I have WAMPServer running on my host, and want to be able to access the websites on there from my guest OS. What do I do to make this work? What is the IP address of the host computer when using Shared Networking? As far as I can tell "Internal Networking" won't work, because that only allows communication between the guests, not between a guest and the host.

    I have a friend on the same network as me hosting a virtual machine using vmware server.The guest OS is Windows 7 and Windows Server 2003.He granted me administrative priveleges for the machine but when i try to add a user to that VM it says access denied. Moreover when i try to start the VM remotely using the command vmrun -T server -h https://computer-name.domain.com:8333/sdk -u domain/user -p passwd start "[standard] Win2k3Client1/Win2k3Client1.vmx" This shows unsufficient priveleges on host operating system but i am able to login with same username password on VMWare Web Access

  • Hidden characters inserted after pipe (|) followed by a space

    Very often, on my Mac, when I use the pipe (|) character followed by a space character, an invincible character will be inserted in between. This is especially annoying when using the terminal, as it makes commands invalid. If I type the following in iterm2, I often get the following: ls | cat zsh: command not found:  cat If I hit the up-arrow-key to get my previous command, and then remove and reinsert the space between | and cat, the command will work. When I copy paste the working and non working commands into a file, like this: non-working: ls | cat working: ls | cat and open it in Hex Fiend it shows the following: non-working: ls |¬†cat working: ls | cat I've also experienced the same kind of issue in SublimeText2 using the square brackets ([]) followed by a space. So I don't believe its an issue with iTerm2.

  • Virtual Box between differnt PCs

    I am using Virtual Box machine (as .vdi) on external HDD drive so I can move it between different pcs. On each PC I have created new VM machine, attached that vdi and it seems working well. However, I've noticed that during my last transfer the latest installed applications were not saved on the .vdi, which made me to loose 1 day of work. I don't remember of doing any snapshots which I could merge. Can someone give me a hint how to handle this efficiently in feature?

    in Windows, win+ <-- and win+ --> snap any window to the left/right side of a monitor, and if pressed again, snap the window to the other monitor, in multi-monitor environment. when a window is maximized, it will "restore" the window first, and at the next win+ <-- key the window will snap. this is very easy to use and remember. But on Linux a maximized window is not affected by win+ <-- , and the user must explicitly un-maximize it (win+down. the window is not moved to another monitor a side-snapped window cannot be resized - it behaves like a maximized window. is there another program that behaves like Windows, or I should write one by myself? (i'm using ubuntu/mint)

I added the following to /etc/apache2/httpd.conf NameVirtualHost *:80 <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot "/var/www/square/public" ServerName square.localhost </VirtualHost> And restarted the apache. I go to http://square.localhost/ and it gives an error telling server not found. Could anyone tell me how to define virtual host settings on Ubuntu please? Thanks in advance.

    Has anyone run across any good benchmarks or other research on tuning the ZFS recordsize when putting virtual disk files on it for a guest OS? I'm using VirtualBox at the moment. I have notice significant performance improvement when working with a DBMS by setting the ZFS recordsize to the same as the DB blocksize, so I'm guessing matching the blocksize of the guest filesystem would also be a good idea.

  • How to select File menu in Mac, just like Alt + F in Windows?

    I have a Macbook Air with Mac OSX 10.8.2 . I have been wondering how do I select the File Menu which I am so used to doing in Windows using Alt + F, so that I do not have to click on the File menu each time I need to do something. I googled and checked out a bunch of articles as well. This wikipedia article suggests http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_keyboard_shortcuts CTRL +F2 then F. I tried this in Sublime Text and did not work for me. Any clues? Thanks.
