• SAPPHIRE HD 7770 no audio on HDMI TV display

  I have SAPPHIRE HD 7770 and cannot get work audio over HDMI. http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1159&lid=1&pid=1452&leg=0 I use Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit version with all current updates. I tried at /etc/default/grub: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash radeon.audio=1" ... it didn't help. It's probably I use proprietary driver -this seems to be open source driver. I use the driver, what jockey-gtk (additional drivers) offered me: ATI/AMD PROPRIETARY FGLRX GRAPHICS DRIVER <---- I installed that one ATI/AMD PROPRIETARY FGLRX GRAPHICS DRIVER (post-release update) So - I installed the first one, because installing second version failed. Everything went fine but no sound at TV display by HDMI. Even Gnome sound mixer doesn't show HDMI choice. Using 32" Samsung B530 LCD TV - http://www.lcdbesttv.com/2010/02/samsung-b530-series-lcd-tv/ I have Asus P8Z77-M motherboard - http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z77M/ - there is also HDMI integrated. When I put HDMI cord to that plug, then even Gnome sound mixer showed HDMI audio but it didn't work. I have set from BIOS, that I use that SAPPHIRE HD 7770 from PCIe. • SQL Saturday 43 (Redmond, WA) Review

  Last Saturday (June 12th) we held a “SQL Saturday” (more about those here) event in Redmond, Washington. The event was held at the Microsoft campus, at the Mixer in our new location called the “Commons”. This is a mall-like area that we have on campus, and the Mixer is a large building with lots of meeting rooms, so it made a perfect location for the event. There was a sign to find the parking, and once there they had a sign to show how to get to the building. Since it’s a secure facility, Greg Larsen and crew had a person manning the door so that even late arrivals could get in. We had about 400 sign up for the event, and a little over 300 attend (official numbers later). I think we would have had a lot more, but the sun was out – and you just can’t underestimate the effect of that here in the Pacific Northwest. We joke a lot about not seeing the sun much, but when a day like what we had on Saturday comes around, and on a weekend at that, you’d cancel your wedding to go outside to play in the sun. And your spouse would agree with you for doing it. We had some top-notch speakers, including Clifford Dibble and Kalen Delany. The food was great, we had multiple sponsors (including Confio who seems to be at all of these) and the attendees were from all over the professional spectrum, from developers to BI to DBA’s. Everyone I saw was very engaged, and when I visited room-to-room I saw almost no one in the halls – everyone was in the sessions. I also saw a much larger Microsoft presence this year, especially from Dan Jones’ team. I had a great turnout at my session, and yes, I was wearing an Oracle staff shirt. I did that because I wanted to show that the session I gave on “SQL Server for the Oracle DBA” was non-marketing – I couldn’t exactly bash Oracle wearing their colors! These events are amazing. I can’t emphasize enough how much I appreciate the volunteers and how much work they put into these events, and to you for coming. If you’re reading this and you haven’t attended one yet, definitely find out if there is one in your area – and if not, start one. • sbackup: can not mount FTP automatically

  In the sbackup configuration GUI i set the ftp://user:pw@online/storage and it's marked as successfully connected. After daily backup time, I checked the ftp and it was empty. In the error mail it says: Error in _do_mount: volume doesn't implement mount [ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED - Operation not supported for the current backend.] Unable to mount: volume doesn't implement mount File access manager not initialized When restarting the sbackup GUI, it is no longer connected to the ftp and i have to click the button again to connect the remote directory - although it still knows my user/pw. How to save this permanently?

• Sound works for only one user at a time

  I've noticed that sound becomes unavailable to me when someone else is logged into my machine and playing music (or has facebook open) in the other account. I've had to ask them to unlock their account and turn it off so I can get sound in my own stuff. Even in sound preferences, the hardware itself disappears and output is "dummy sound". Is there a way to prevent this from happening? What would be really good is if I could turn down the volume (or mute entirely) all the sounds on all other accounts on a per-user basis from my sound preferences without affecting whatever setting they have - essentially saying whenever user A is logged in, all sounds from user B's account are muted and anything from user C's account is at 50% while I can still have my own at full volume.

• How can I force a preferred sound output device to be used?

  In my sound settings interface, there are two devices for sound output: Both refer to the same physical device, which is a network sound device. Both work, but only with the second one, Simultaneous output to Kenwook Audio Device Digital Stereo (IEC958) on mythbuntu@mythbuntu, does the output volume respond to being changed. The first one always plays at the same level, and ignores volume settings. Every time I boot, the first one is selected. How can I make it so the second one is the default and the first one is disabled or at least never selected?

• Mount encrypted volumes from command line?

  If I have an encrypted external disk (or an internal disk that is not in fstab), I see an entry for it in Nautilus -- with an entry like "X GB Encrypted Volume". I can click on this volume, and am prompted for a password to decrypt and mount the device. But how do I do this from the command line? This wiki page, and other docs I can find, only refer to GUI methods of decrypting the device; but this won't do in the context of headless servers or SSH logins. Is there a simple way to get devices to mount to automatic locations in "/media" just like they would with the GUI? (I'm not asking about encrypted home directories -- I'm aware of ecryptfs-mount-private. This question is about additional encrypted volumes.)

• How do I toggle sound with amixer?

  Including Natty I was always able to toggle (mute/unmute) the 'Master' sound volume with the amixer sset Master toggle command that I linked to an edge binding in CompizConfig-Manager. Now after installing Oneiric the command only mutes the sound but doesn't unmute it. I even tried it in the Terminal but it also doesn't work. It changes 'Mono: Playback 68 [78%] [-14.25dB] [off]' to '...[on]' but the sound stays muted so that I have to unmute it via the 'sound-indicator' in the panel. How can I get this working again? What did change since Natty? Does anyone know the command the 'sound-indicator' uses to toggle the sound volume?

• 11.10 had sound, 12.04 doesnt. Acer Aspire One D257

  I'm wondering if anyone else has had this same problem, because if so it might be worth while for me to file a bug, but it might also be chaos monkey so I wanted to check first. I have an Acer Aspire One D257 and the sound worked in 11.10 by default, but after doing a fresh install of 12.04 there is no sound. There used to be a speaker icon on the menu bar but now there isn't, and volume up and volume down hotkeys now do nothing, which leads me to believe it isn't detecting the sound card properly anymore. Googling for sound problems on an Acer Aspire One D257 on 12.04 isn't showing any helpful results, so I'm wondering if it's just me. Does anyone have an AAO D257 on 12.04 with the sound working, and if so did you have to do anything special to make it work?

I am using the proprietary NVIDIA drivers availabler through the additional drivers utility, on Xubuntu 11.10. In the mixer, I have all the volumes unmuted and turned up to 100%, but no sound through the HDMI. If I plug in speakers the nd comes through just fine. What can I do to make the sound go through the HDMI and to the TV?

I have bought M-Audio Bx5a deluxe Studio Monitors for my T61. I think the onboard Intel HD sound card will not do any justice to these speakers. So I am looking for an external sound interface. I particularly liked this one as it is not very expensive and it has a volume control (speaker lack a central-front volume knob). Has anyone been able to use this on ubuntu. Also, if anyone would like to recommend me another option?

• replacing kernel on non-booting ec2 instance

  So I had an amazon ec2 instance crash during the update to 14.04LTS. Frustratingly, it appears the kernel might be bad (or at least that's what the log below says to me, I could totally be wrong). I'm able to mount the volume to another, working server, chroot the broken volume, and sudo apt-get remove linux-headers-3.MOSTRECENT. Unfortunately though, when I try sudo update-grub, it comes back with /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?). What am I missing? • /etc/crypttab not working

  I used the Disk Utility to create an encrypted volume on an external drive. When I click the Unlock Volume button in that program, it mounts the drive for me. Now, I want to automate this process so that it will happen at boot-up. When I run sudo cryptsetup luksUUID /dev/sdb1, I get this: ca709269-1e3e-4e9e-9e08-7248f0e6c5a6 So, I create /etc/crypttab like this: backup_drive UUID=ca709269-1e3e-4e9e-9e08-7248f0e6c5a6 none And I added this line to /etc/fstab: /dev/mapper/backup_drive /mnt/backup ext3 default 0 2 When I reboot, Ubuntu tells me that the device is not available to map, so I tell it to skip it. It appears that the /etc/crypttab is not getting run correctly. How can I debug this?

• Xubuntu: how do I automatically mount external NTFS drive with writes allowed?

  i would have thought mine was such a common question that there would be a simple solution already built in to xubuntu - but there isnt. i have 2 separate external hard disks and connect them to a usb port at different times - i would like them to be automatically mounted as read/write, but apparently the designers of gnome-volume-manager decided that shouldnt be possible and they are mounted as read-only in fact, i can write new files to them, but cannot then delete the new files i just wrote! is there a workaround? i read somewhere that etc/fstab doesn't apply to removable media, which are mounted by gnome-volume-manager and therefore cannot be unmounted by a user

• ASUS Xonar DG not working Ubuntu

  I've checked the "Questions that may already have your answer" to no avail. Basically, there is no sound at all, the snd_oxygen drivers are all being loaded. I can see the sound card and all of it's separate ports in Settings-Sound-Output, but nothing is coming out. I tried adjusting the volume in alsamixer, but for some reason the volume won't change (all that is there are some options [Speakers, Headphones, FP Headphones] and they change when I press the up/down arrow keys) at all. I have also tried many other terminal commands, such as reloading alsa and checking if the sound card is even being detected, which it is. I'm left clueless. It says on a bug report that this has been unassigned for over a year. Surely that's not right. Thanks in advance, Caelan.

• Using VBA to model data in Autodesk Inventor?

  I have a close friend who is using a specific device that records the dimensions of an object as it is eroded and outputs the dimensional data to an excel sheet. The object is spherical in nature but is eroded from the top and bottom, so the shape is constantly changing and a single formula for surface area and volume would not work. This is where Inventor comes in. My friend can plug the dimensional data to Inventor and it immediately returns the surface area and volume. The erosion process takes several minutes to complete and records data at very short intervals, so it would be very arduous to plug in the data thousand of time. Since Inventor supports macros and VBA, is there a way to plug the data into Inventor and output it into another spreadsheet? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

• Why would Linux VM in vSphere ESXi 5.5 show dramatically increased disk i/o latency?

  I'm stumped and I hope someone else will recognize the symptoms of this problem. Hardware: new Dell T110 II, dual-core Pentium G860 2.9 GHz, onboard SATA controller, one new 500 GB 7200 RPM cabled hard drive inside the box, other drives inside but not mounted yet. No RAID. Software: fresh CentOS 6.5 virtual machine under VMware ESXi 5.5.0 (build 174 + vSphere Client). 2.5 GB RAM allocated. The disk is how CentOS offered to set it up, namely as a volume inside an LVM Volume Group, except that I skipped having a separate /home and simply have / and /boot. CentOS is patched up, ESXi patched up, latest VMware tools installed in the VM. No users on the system, no services running, no files on the disk but the OS installation. I'm interacting with the VM via the VM virtual console in vSphere Client. Before going further, I wanted to check that I configured things more or less reasonably. I ran the following command as root in a shell on the VM: for i in 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10; do dd if=/dev/zero of=/test.img bs=8k count=256k conv=fdatasync done I.e., just repeat the dd command 10 times, which results in printing the transfer rate each time. The results are disturbing. It starts off well: 262144+0 records in 262144+0 records out 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 20.451 s, 105 MB/s 262144+0 records in 262144+0 records out 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 20.4202 s, 105 MB/s ... but after 7-8 of these, it then prints 262144+0 records in 262144+0 records out 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GG) copied, 82.9779 s, 25.9 MB/s 262144+0 records in 262144+0 records out 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 84.0396 s, 25.6 MB/s 262144+0 records in 262144+0 records out 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 103.42 s, 20.8 MB/s If I wait a significant amount of time, say 30-45 minutes, and run it again, it again goes back to 105 MB/s, and after several rounds (sometimes a few, sometimes 10+), it drops to ~20-25 MB/s again. Plotting the disk latency in vSphere's interface, it shows periods of high disk latency hitting 1.2-1.5 seconds during the times that dd reports the low throughput. (And yes, things get pretty unresponsive while that's happening.) What could be causing this? I'm comfortable that it is not due to the disk failing, because I also had configured two other disks as an additional volume in the same system. At first I thought I did something wrong with that volume, but after commenting the volume out from /etc/fstab and rebooting, and trying the tests on / as shown above, it became clear that the problem is elsewhere. It is probably an ESXi configuration problem, but I'm not very experienced with ESXi. It's probably something stupid, but after trying to figure this out for many hours over multiple days, I can't find the problem, so I hope someone can point me in the right direction. (P.S.: yes, I know this hardware combo won't win any speed awards as a server, and I have reasons for using this low-end hardware and running a single VM, but I think that's besides the point for this question [unless it's actually a hardware problem].) ADDENDUM #1: Reading other answers such as this one made me try adding oflag=direct to dd. However, it makes no difference in the pattern of results: initially the numbers are higher for many rounds, then they drop to 20-25 MB/s. (The initial absolute numbers are in the 50 MB/s range.) ADDENDUM #2: Adding sync ; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches into the loop does not make a difference at all. ADDENDUM #3: To take out further variables, I now run dd such that the file it creates is larger than the amount of RAM on the system. The new command is dd if=/dev/zero of=/test.img bs=16k count=256k conv=fdatasync oflag=direct. Initial throughput numbers with this version of the command are ~50 MB/s. They drop to 20-25 MB/s when things go south. ADDENDUM #4: Here is the output of iostat -d -m -x 1 running in another terminal window while performance is "good" and then again when it's "bad". (While this is going on, I'm running dd if=/dev/zero of=/test.img bs=16k count=256k conv=fdatasync oflag=direct.) • Ubuntu 11.10 error message at startup after clean install

  I have just installed Ubuntu 11.10 (did a fresh install and erased 11.04). After the reboot it appeared a log on the screen, saying all the starting services on the left and [OK] on the right. However, two particular entries, starting automatic crash report installation and starting restore sound card(s') mixer state(s) were set on [FAIL]. After that, Ubuntu did not boot. Is there any way that i can skip those two entries and boot Ubuntu?
