• Using Computer Management (MMC) with the Solaris CIFS Service (August 25, 2009)

  One of our goals for the Solaris CIFS Service is to provide seamless Windows interoperability: not just to deliver ubiquitous, multi-protocol file sharing, which is obviously a major part of this project, but to support Windows services at a fundamental level.  It's an ongoing mission and our latest update includes support for Windows remote management. Remote management is extremely important to Windows administrators and one of the mainstay tools is Computer Management. Computer Management is a Windows administration application, actually a collection of Microsoft Management Console (MMC) tools, that can be used to configure, monitor and manage local and remote services and resources.  The MMC is an extensible framework of registered components, known as snap-ins, which allows Computer Management to provide comprehensive management features for both the local system and remote systems on the network. Supported Computer Management features include: Share ManagementSupport for share management is relatively complete.  You can create, delete, list and configure shares.  It's not yet possible to change the maximum allowed or number of users properties but other properties, including the Share Permissions, can be managed via the MMC. Users, Groups and ConnectionsYou can view local SMB users and groups, monitor user connections and see the list of open files. If necessary, you can also disconnect users and/or close files. ServicesYou can view the SMF services running on an OpenSolaris system.  This is a read-only view - we don't support service management (the ability to start or stop) SMF services from Computer Management (yet). To ensure that only the appropriate users have access to administrative operations there are some access restrictions on these remote management features. Regular users can: List shares Only members of the Administrators or Power Users groups can: Manage shares List connections Only members of the Administrators group can: List open files and close files Disconnect users View SMF services View the EventLog Here's a screenshot when I was using Computer Management and Server Manager (another Windows remote management application) on Windows XP to view some open files on an OpenSolaris system to prepare a slide presentation on MMC support.

• Is DevCon.exe still the best way to restart/power cycle USB ports after resuming from hibernation in

  I have a USB broadband card on my Windows 7 laptop. It loathes resuming from hibernation properly. Back in the XP days I would issue a call devcon.exe from the command prompt and restart the selected ports (Saves you having to manually unplug and plug back in your USB devices). Ive been trying this is Windows 7, but the UAC keeps getting in the way. I'll start a command prompt. Issue the devcon command, but UAC asks me if I really want to do this, when I click yes it opens a different command prompt and launches the command. After the command completed this new prompt window closes faster than the speed of light and I cannot see the results. So Im thinking there has to be a better way to do this in the Vista/Win7 world...?

• Disable printing extraneous job info when I print a images

  As of 10/11/12 I this is still a problem. Peterling, that link you gave me was for Windows. Not Ubuntu. I need to know how to do this in Ubuntu. Whenever I print off an image, before the actual image prints, I get these weird "print job" sheets. (I named them that, because I don't know what else to call them.) • bash terminal/console strange overlapping behavior

  I am using gnome-terminal in Ubuntu 11.10 and seem to get long lines overlapping in the terminal window. When I copy a long command line and paste it into the terminal, the text gets overlapped to the start of the line and often covers the user prompt. If I resize the terminal window, making it wider the overlapping gets undone and everything looks normal. In previous versions of Ubuntu, if a line was too long it would continue on the next line below. Another problem I have noticed that may be related, is when using the up arrow key to show previously typed commands, sometimes instead of the output command line being replaced by the previous command each time the key is pressed, the lines get partially merged. A portion of the old line remains, and the next command gets joined onto the end. This leftover part of a command is persistent and does not get replaced next time the key is pressed, although the insertion point or blinking cursor is at the end of the latest recalled command, and the leftover has no effect if I press enter. Is this problem a bug or some setting that needs fixing? Where do I look for the cause? keyboard? gnome-terminal? bash? Thank you for any help or suggestions offered

  Everytime I want to be able to run something that requires me to be a sudoer too many times, I need to google for the formatting of /etc/sudoers to remind me again what exactly is the proper way to write it. Now I see different writing styles in my sudoers file, which is the consequence of different google results over the months. I've also noticed that the second example (below) seems to work in XFCE, but not in Cinnamon (Gnome 3). This could be totally unrelated, but nontheless I'd like to know once and for all, what is the correct grammar of the sudoer line, and what is the difference between the given examples? redsandro ALL=NOPASSWD:/path/to/command redsandro ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:/path/to/command redsandro ALL=(ALL:ALL) NOPASSWD:/path/to/command Also, what are all the ALL's for? One user, one command, yet I need to use the ALL keyword up to three times? Am I doing this wrong? Of course, omitting NOPASSWD: makes you enter your password before you are permitted to run the command, but one point of confusion is the usage of = and :, for the final command that is the subject of the line can be prepended by either =, :, , or ), confusing grammar for similar semantics.

• Do you write unit tests for all the time in TDD?

  I have been designing and developing code with TDD style for a long time. What disturbs me about TDD is writing tests for code that does not contain any business logic or interesting behaviour. I know TDD is a design activity more than testing but sometimes I feel it's useless to write tests in these scenarios. For example I have a simple scenario like "When user clicks check button, it should check file's validity". For this scenario I usually start writing tests for presenter/controller class like the one below. @Test public void when_user_clicks_check_it_should_check_selected_file_validity(){ MediaService service =mock(MediaService); View view =mock(View); when(view.getSelectedFile).thenReturns("c:\\Dir\\file.avi"); MediaController controller =new MediaController(service,view); controller.check(); verify(service).check("c:\\Dir\\file.avi"); } As you can see there is no design decision or interesting code to verify behaviour. I am testing values from view passed to MediaService. I usually write but don't like these kind of tests. What do yo do about these situations ? Do you write tests for all the time ? UPDATE : I have changed the test name and code after complaints. Some users said that you should write tests for the trivial cases like this so in the future someone might add interesting behaviour. But what about “Code for today, design for tomorrow.” ? If someone, including myself, adds more interesting code in the future the test can be created for it then. Why should I do it now for the trivial cases ?

  I've been trying to find a tutorial on how to best make animations in Android. I already have some animations for my enemies and my character that are controlled by rectangles and changing rectangleframe between updates using a picture like this: When I'm shooting my enemies they lose HP, and when their HP == 0 they get removed. As long as I'm using an arrayList (which I do for all enemies and bullets) I'm fine, since I can just use list.remove(i). But when I'm on a boss-level and the Boss's HP == 0, I want to remove him and play an animation of an explosion of stars before the "End-screen". Is there a preferred way to do temporary animations like this? If you can give me an example or redirect me to a tutorial, I'd be really grateful!

• New functionality in TFS Build Manager &ndash; Managing Triggers and Build Resources

  Yesterday we pushed out a new release (August 2012) of the Community TFS Build Extension, including a new version of the Community TFS Build Manager (1.0.4.6) The two big new features in the Build Manager in this release are: Set Triggers It is now possible to select one or more build definitions and update the triggers for them in one simple operation: You’ll note that we have started collapsing the context menu a bit, the list of commands are getting long! When selecting the Trigger command, you’ll see a dialog where the options should be self-explanatory: The only thing missing here is the Scheduled trigger option, you’ll have to do that using Team Explorer for now.   Manage Build Resources The other feature is that it is now possible to view the build controllers and agents in your current collection and also perform some actions against them. The new functionality is available by select the Build Resources item in the drop down menu: Selecting this, you’ll see a (sort of) hierarchical view of the build controllers and their agents: In this view you can quickly see all the resources and their status. You can also view the build directory of each build agent and the tags that are associated with them. On the action menu, you can enable and disable both agents and controllers (several at a time), and you can also select to remove them. By selecting Manage, you’ll be presented with the standard Manage Controller dialog from Visual Studio where you can set the rest of the properties. Hopefully we’ll be able to implement most of the existing functionality so that we can remove that menu option Our plan is to add more functionality to this view, such as adding new agents/controllers, restarting build service hosts, maybe view diagnostic information such as disk space and error logs.   Hope you’ll find the new functionality useful. I read different code snippetse in Orbeon's wiki on XForms submission from a pipeline, and I tried different solutions but it doesn't work, and there is no example with a POST from a pipeline, caught by a PFC and sent to an XForms view that receives the posted data (all examples are done in the same page). • Problem using easy_install on Windows 7, 64 bit. (cannot find python.exe)

  Hi, I have just now installed Python 2.6 on my Windows 7 (64 bit) Lenovo t61p laptop. I have downloaded Sphinx and nose and apparently installed them correctly using python setup.py install (at least no errors were reported during the installation). Now I am trying to install pymongo using easy_install but I am not having much success. It seems that easy_install isn't working at all. I execute easy_install as administrator: C:\>easy_install Cannot find Python executable C:\Program Files\Python26\python.exe The path C:\Program Files\Python26\python.exe is correct. I have found this bug report on bugs.python.org which seems to be related, although its status is 'Resolved'. Do you have any ideas as to what may be wrong? Any pointers, hints or tips for diagnosing the problem further would be greatly appreciated. • Where should I create my DbCommand instances?

  I seemingly have two choices: Make my class implement IDisposable. Create my DbCommand instances as private readonly fields, and in the constructor, add the parameters that they use. Whenever I want to write to the database, bind to these parameters (reusing the same command instances), set the Connection and Transaction properties, then call ExecuteNonQuery. In the Dispose method, call Dispose on each of these fields. Each time I want to write to the database, write using(var cmd = new DbCommand("...", connection, transaction)) around the usage of the command, and add parameters and bind to them every time as well, before calling ExecuteNonQuery. I assume I don't need a new command for each query, just a new command for each time I open the database (right?). Both of these seem somewhat inelegant and possibly incorrect. For #1, it is annoying for my users that I this class is now IDisposable just because I have used a few DbCommands (which should be an implementation detail that they don't care about). I also am somewhat suspicious that keeping a DbCommand instance around might inadvertently lock the database or something? For #2, it feels like I'm doing a lot of work (in terms of .NET objects) each time I want to write to the database, especially with the parameter-adding. It seems like I create the same object every time, which just feels like bad practice. • Foolishness Check: PHP Class finds Class file but not Class in the file.

  I'm at a loss here. I've defined an abstract superclass in one file and a subclass in another. I have required the super-classes file and the stack trace reports to find an include it. However, it then returns an error when it hits the 'extends' line: Fatal error: Class 'HTMLBuilder' not found in View/Markup/HTML/HTML4.01/HTML4_01Builder.php on line 7. I had this working with another class tree that uses factories a moment ago. I just added the builder layer in between the factories and the consumer. The factory layer looked almost exactly the same in terms of includes and dependencies. So that makes me think I must have done something silly that's causes the HTMLBuilder.php file to not be included correctly or interpreted correctly or some such. • How to manage a MotionEvent going from one View to another?

  I have a SurfaceView that takes up part of the screen, and some buttons along the bottom. When a button is pressed and the user drags, I want to be able to drag a picture (based on the button) onto the SurfaceView and have it drawn there. I want to be able to use clickListeners and the like, and not just have a giant SurfaceView with me writing code to detect where the user pressed and if it's a button, etc. I have somewhat of a solution, but it seems a bit of a hack to me. What is the best way to accomplish this using the framework intelligently?   I have been able to find lots of examples of adding a Dropdown list to a view but I need to add a dropdown list to a view that also has a Webgrid on it. This entails two different models and from what I see I can only have one per view. The DDL will be filled from one model and the grid from the other. I'm just trying to filter the displayed data in the grid with the data selected in the ddl. Any examples or articles would be greatly appreciated. TIA

  So I am new to Rails, and OO programming in general. I have some grasp of the MVC architecture. My goal is to make a (nearly) completely dynamic plug-and-play plotting web server. I am fairly confused with params, forms, and select helpers. What I want to do is use Rails drop downs to basically pass parameters as strings to my controller, which will use the params to select certain column data from my database and plot it dynamically. I have the latter part of the task working, but I can't seem to pass values from my view to controller. For simplicity's sake, say my database schema looks like this: --------------Plot--------------- |____x____|____y1____|____y2____| | 1 | 1 | 1 | | 2 | 2 | 4 | | 3 | 3 | 9 | | 4 | 4 | 16 | | 5 | 5 | 25 | ... and in my Model, I have dynamic selector scopes that will let me select just certain columns of data: in Plot.rb class Plot < ActiveRecord::Base scope :select_var, lambda {|varname| select(varname)} scope :between_x, lambda {|x1,x2| where("x BETWEEN ? and ?","#{x1}","#{x2}")} So this way, I can call: irb>>@p1 = Plot.select_var(['x','y1']).between_x(1,3) and get in return a class where @p1.x and @p1.y1 are my only attributes, only for values between x=1 to x=4, which I dynamically plot. I want to start off in a view (plot/index), where I can dynamically select which variable names (table column names), and which rows from the database to fetch and plot. The problem is, most select helpers don't seem to work with columns in the database, only rows. So to select columns, I first get an array of column names that exist in my database with a function I wrote. Plots Controller def index d=Plot.first @tags = d.list_vars end So @tags = ['x','y1','y2'] Then in my plot/index.html.erb I try to use a drop down to select wich variables I send back to the controller. index.html.erb <%= select_tag( :variable, options_for_select(@plots.first.list_vars,:name,:multiple=>:true) )%> <%= button_to 'Plot now!', :controller =>"plots/plot_vars", :variable => params[:variable]%> Finally, in the controller again Plots controller ... def plot_vars @plot_data=Plot.select_vars([params[:variable]]) end The problem is everytime I try this (or one of a hundred variations thereof), the params[:variable] is nill. How can I use a drop down to pass a parameter with string variable names to the controller? Sorry its so long, I have been struggling with this for about a month now. :-( I think my biggest problem is that this setup doesn't really match the Rails architecture. I don't have "users" and "articles" as individual entities. I really have a data structure, not a data object. Trying to work with the structure in terms of data object speak is not necessarily the easiest thing to do I think. For background: My actual database has about 250 columns and a couple million rows, and they get changed and modified from time to time. I know I can make the database smarter, but its not worth it on my end. I work at a scientific institute where there are a ton of projects with databases just like this. Each one has a web developer that spends months setting up a web interface and their own janky plotting setups. I want to make this completely dynamic, as a plug-and-play solution so all you have to do is specify your database connection, and this rails setup will automatically show and plot which data you want in it. I am more of a sequential programmer and number cruncher, as are many people here. I think this project could be very helpful in the end, but its difficult to figure out for me right now.

One of my animateWithDuration blocks doesn't transition, it is a sudden change, and transitionWithView does not temporarily disable user interaction. I have checked the docs and believe I am doing everything correctly, but obviously something is wrong. This block moves one of the container views, but does not block the user from other interactions in ViewController while the transition is occurring. I think the problem is that I am trying to call two different animation/transition blocks at the same time.
