• Node.js Adventure - Node.js on Windows

  Two weeks ago I had had a talk with Wang Tao, a C# MVP in China who is currently running his startup company and product named worktile. He asked me to figure out a synchronization solution which helps his product in the future. And he preferred me implementing the service in Node.js, since his worktile is written in Node.js. Even though I have some experience in ASP.NET MVC, HTML, CSS and JavaScript, I don’t think I’m an expert of JavaScript. In fact I’m very new to it. So it scared me a bit when he asked me to use Node.js. But after about one week investigate I have to say Node.js is very easy to learn, use and deploy, even if you have very limited JavaScript skill. And I think I became love Node.js. Hence I decided to have a series named “Node.js Adventure”, where I will demonstrate my story of learning and using Node.js in Windows and Windows Azure. And this is the first one.   (Brief) Introduction of Node.js I don’t want to have a fully detailed introduction of Node.js. There are many resource on the internet we can find. But the best one is its homepage. Node.js was created by Ryan Dahl, sponsored by Joyent. It’s consist of about 80% C/C++ for core and 20% JavaScript for API. It utilizes CommonJS as the module system which we will explain later. The official definition of Node.js is Node.js is a platform built on Chrome's JavaScript runtime for easily building fast, scalable network applications. Node.js uses an event-driven, non-blocking I/O model that makes it lightweight and efficient, perfect for data-intensive real-time applications that run across distributed devices. First of all, Node.js utilizes JavaScript as its development language and runs on top of V8 engine, which is being used by Chrome. It brings JavaScript, a client-side language into the backend service world. So many people said, even though not that actually, “Node.js is a server side JavaScript”. Additionally, Node.js uses an event-driven, non-blocking IO model. This means in Node.js there’s no way to block currently working thread. Every operation in Node.js executed asynchronously. This is a huge benefit especially if our code needs IO operations such as reading disks, connect to database, consuming web service, etc.. Unlike IIS or Apache, Node.js doesn’t utilize the multi-thread model. In Node.js there’s only one working thread serves all users requests and resources response, as the ST star in the figure below. And there is a POSIX async threads pool in Node.js which contains many async threads (AT stars) for IO operations. When a user have an IO request, the ST serves it but it will not do the IO operation. Instead the ST will go to the POSIX async threads pool to pick up an AT, pass this operation to it, and then back to serve any other requests. The AT will actually do the IO operation asynchronously. Assuming before the AT complete the IO operation there is another user comes. The ST will serve this new user request, pick up another AT from the POSIX and then back. If the previous AT finished the IO operation it will take the result back and wait for the ST to serve. ST will take the response and return the AT to POSIX, and then response to the user. And if the second AT finished its job, the ST will response back to the second user in the same way. As you can see, in Node.js there’s only one thread serve clients’ requests and POSIX results. This thread looping between the users and POSIX and pass the data back and forth. The async jobs will be handled by POSIX. This is the event-driven non-blocking IO model. The performance of is model is much better than the multi-threaded blocking model. For example, Apache is built in multi-threaded blocking model while Nginx is in event-driven non-blocking mode. First of you we need to download the latest Node.js platform from its website. After installed, it will register its folder into system path variant so that we can execute Node.js at anywhere. To confirm the Node.js installation, just open up a command windows and type “node”, then it will show the Node.js console. As you can see this is a JavaScript interactive console. We can type some simple JavaScript code and command here. To run a Node.js JavaScript application, just specify the source code file name as the argument of the “node” command. For example, let’s create a Node.js source code file named “helloworld.js”. Then copy a sample code from Node.js website. 1: var http = require("http"); 2:  3: http.createServer(function (req, res) { 4: res.writeHead(200, {"Content-Type": "text/plain"}); 5: res.end("Hello World\n"); 6: }).listen(1337, "127.0.0.1"); 7:  8: console.log("Server running at http://127.0.0.1:1337/"); This code will create a web server, listening on 1337 port and return “Hello World” when any requests come. Run it in the command windows. Then open a browser and navigate to http://localhost:1337/. As you can see, when using Node.js we are not creating a web application. In fact we are likely creating a web server. We need to deal with request, response and the related headers, status code, etc.. And this is one of the benefit of using Node.js, lightweight and straightforward. But creating a website from scratch again and again is not acceptable. The good news is that, Node.js utilizes CommonJS as its module system, so that we can leverage some modules to simplify our job. And furthermore, there are about ten thousand of modules available n the internet, which covers almost all areas in server side application development.   NPM and Node.js Modules Node.js utilizes CommonJS as its module system. A module is a set of JavaScript files. In Node.js if we have an entry file named “index.js”, then all modules it needs will be located at the “node_modules” folder. And in the “index.js” we can import modules by specifying the module name. For example, in the code we’ve just created, we imported a module named “http”, which is a build-in module installed alone with Node.js. So that we can use the code in this “http” module. Besides the build-in modules there are many modules available at the NPM website. Thousands of developers are contributing and downloading modules at this website. Hence this is another benefit of using Node.js. There are many modules we can use, and the numbers of modules increased very fast, and also we can publish our modules to the community. When I wrote this post, there are totally 14,608 modules at NPN and about 10 thousand downloads per day. Install a module is very simple. Let’s back to our command windows and input the command “npm install express”. This command will install a module named “express”, which is a MVC framework on top of Node.js. And let’s create another JavaScript file named “helloweb.js” and copy the code below in it. I imported the “express” module. And then when the user browse the home page it will response a text. If the incoming URL matches “/Echo/:value” which the “value” is what the user specified, it will pass it back with the current date time in JSON format. Start our application from the command window by command “node helloweb.js”, and then navigate to the home page we can see the response in the browser. And if we go to, for example http://localhost:12345/Echo/Hello Shaun, we can see the JSON result. The “express” module is very populate in NPM. It makes the job simple when we need to build a MVC website. There are many modules very useful in NPM. - underscore: A utility module covers many common functionalities such as for each, map, reduce, select, etc.. - request: A very simple HTT request client. - async: Library for coordinate async operations. - wind: Library which enable us to control flow with plain JavaScript for asynchronous programming (and more) without additional pre-compiling steps.   Node.js and IIS I demonstrated how to run the Node.js application from console. Since we are in Windows another common requirement would be, “can I host Node.js in IIS?” The answer is “Yes”. Tomasz Janczuk created a project IISNode at his GitHub space we can find here. And then I described how to install and run a Node.js application on windows console. I also described the Node.js module system and NPM command. At the end I referred some links about IISNode, an IIS extension that allows Node.js application runs on IIS. Node.js became a very popular server side application platform especially in this year. By leveraging its non-blocking IO model and async feature it’s very useful for us to build a highly scalable, asynchronously service. • Run WordPress & Other Web Apps with Windows Web Platform

  Would you like to run WordPress or other web apps on your PC so you can easily test and design websites?  Here we’ll look at how you can get the latest web apps on your computer in only a few quick steps. Many web apps today, such as WordPress, MediaWiki, and more, are open source and can be run for free from any computer with even a simple local web server.  They are often very difficult to install on your computer, since they require a number of dependencies such as PHP and MySQL.  Microsoft has worked to make this easier, releasing the Windows Web Platform Installer.  This lets you install many popular web apps and free tools in Windows with only a few clicks. Here we’re going to look at how to install WordPress and the free Visual Web Developer 2010 Express to edit web code with the Web Platform Installer.  But, if you’d rather install a different web app or tool, feel free to choose those as the installations are generally similar. Getting Started Head over to Microsoft’s Web development site and download the Web Platform Installer (link below).  This will download very quick, as it is just a small loader.  When you run this loader, it will download the Web Platform Installer files.  The Web Platform Installer works on XP, Vista, and Windows 7, as well as the related versions of Windows Server. After a couple moments, the Web Platform Installer will open and load information about the latest web offerings.    Now you can choose what you want to install.  You can quickly select the recommended products for several categories such as Web Server, Database, and more. Alternately, click Customize under the category and select exactly what you want to install.  Note that items already installed on your computer will be grayed out. We wanted to install Visual Web Developer 2010 Express, so select Customize under Tools, and select Visual Web Developer 2010 Express. Or, for more preset choices, select Options on the bottom of the window. You can choose to add Multimedia, Developer, and Enterprise tools to the lists, or add a new preset list from a feed. Choose Specific Web apps to Install We wanted to install WordPress, so instead of choosing a preset, select the Web Applications tab on the left.  Now you can choose from a variety of apps based on category, or you can view them all together in an A to Z, Most Popular, or Highest Rating list. Click the checkbox beside the app you want to install to select it, or click the “i” for more information. Here’s the More Information pane for WordPress.  If you’re ready to install it, click the checkbox. Now you can go back and add more web apps or tools to the install list if you like.  The Web Platform Installer will automatically find and select prerequisite apps such as MySQL, so you won’t need to worry about finding them. Once you’ve selected everything you want to install, click the Install button on the bottom of the window. The Web Platform Installer will now show you everything that’s selected, including components that it automatically selected.  Notice we only chose to install WordPress and Visual Web Developer 2010 Express, but it also has selected MySQL and PHP automatically.  Click I Accept to proceed. Enter an administrator password for MySQL before the setup begins. Now the Web Platform Installer will take over, automatically downloading, installing, and configuring all of your web apps.  It will also activate optional Windows components that may be needed on your computer.  This may take several minutes, depending on the components you selected and your internet speed.   Setting up Your Test Site Once the installation is finished, you’ll be asked to enter some information about your site.  You can simply accept the defaults or enter your own choices, and then click Continue. Now you’ll need to enter some information for your web apps.  When installing WordPress, you’ll need to choose a database and enter administrative usernames and passwords.  You may also be asked to enter extra information for additional security, but for a local-only test site this isn’t necessary.  Click Continue when you’re finished. You’ll need to wait a few more moments as it complete the setup of your web apps.  The good thing is, once it’s finished, they’ll be ready to go with only minimal configuration. And you’re finished!  The installer will let you know everything it installed, and if there were any problems.  In our test, Visual Web Developer 2010 Express failed to install successfully.  Often the problems may be with the download, so click Finish and then reselect the apps that didn’t install and run the installer again. Now you’re ready to run WordPress from your PC.  Click the Launch WordPress link or enter http://localhost:80/wordpress in your browser to get started. You’ll only have a little more setup to do on WordPress to get it running.  Once you’ve opened your WordPress page in your browser, enter a name for your blog and your email address, and click Install WordPress.   After a few seconds, you should see a Success! page with your username and a temporary password.  Copy the password, and then click Log In. Enter admin as the Username and paste the random generated password, and click Log In. WordPress will remind you to change the default password.  Click the Yes, Take me to my profile page link to do this. Enter something easier for you to remember, and click Update Profile. Now you’re ready to enjoy your new WordPress install on Windows.  You can add plugins and themes, and everything else you’d do with a normal WordPress site.  Here’s the dashboard running from localhost. And here’s the default blog running. Setting up Visual Web Developer 2010 Express As mentioned before, Visual Web Developer 2010 Express didn’t install correctly on our first try, but the second time it installed seamlessly.  Once it’s installed, launch it from your start menu as normal.  It may take a few minutes to load on the first run as it is finishing up setup. You may notice that the splash screen displayed while the program is loading says For Evaluation Purposes Only.  This is because you still need to register the program. You have 30 days to register the program, but let’s go ahead and do it to get this step out of the way.  Click Help in the menu bar, and select Register Product. Click Obtain a registration key online in the popup window. You’ll need to sign in with your Windows Live ID, and then fill out a quick form. When you’re done, copy the registration key displayed and paste it into the registration dialog in Visual Web Developer.   Now you’ve got a registered, free web development program with full standards compliance and IntelliSense to help you work smarter and faster.  And it works great with your local web apps, so you can create, tweak, and then deploy, all from your desktop with this simple installer! Install More Apps You can always run the Web Platform Installer again in the future and add more apps if you’d like.  The install adds a link to the Installer in the Start menu; just run it and repeat the steps above with your new selections. Also, from the installer, you can cleanup the setup files downloaded during the installation if you want.  Click the Options link in the bottom of the window, and then scroll down and select Delete installer cache folder. Uninstalling the apps is not as easy, unfortunately.  If you wish to uninstall the Web Platform Installer and everything you installed with it, you’ll need to uninstall each item individually.  One easy way to see what was all installed together is to sort the entries in Uninstall Programs by date.  In our case, we also installed some other applications on the same day, but it’s easier to see what was installed together. Or if you are not a fan of using Programs and Features to uninstall them, try out a program like Revo Uninstaller Pro. Conclusion Whether you’re a full-time web developer or just enjoy testing out the latest web apps, the Web Platform Installer makes it quick and easy to get your computer loaded up with the latest bits.  In fact, it’s easier to install these tools with all their dependencies than it is to install many standard boxed programs. • Reclaim Vertical UI Space by Adding a Toolbar to the Left or Right Side of Firefox

• AJAX Control Toolkit - Incompatibility with HTMLEditor and UpdatePanel

  Unfortunately HTMLEditor component of AJAX Control Toolkit is not compatible with the UpdatePanel. The problem is when we use accents with the Mozilla Firefox browser and HTMLEditor is inside an UpdatePanel. Letters that contain accents are left with an unknown character (so is stored in the database or even returned a PostBack). Can be tested using Mozilla Firefox on the site of the ASP.NET AJAX Control Toolkit.  Write a word with accents and go to "Submit Content": http://www.asp.net/AJAX/AjaxControlToolkit/Samples/HTMLEditor/HTMLEditor.aspx As an alternative to this problem there are multiple component Rich Text Editors, some using jQuery and others not. Queneeshas provided us a list of 10 components that can be viewed here: http://www.queness.com/post/212/10-jquery-and-non-jquery-javascript-rich-text-editors Hopefully next release of the AJAX Control Toolkit, this inconsistency and others (like the ModalPopup Extender that already referenced in my blog) are resolved once and for all. This is because there are more updated versions prior to that do not have these problems, and with the passing of time some parts were coming into conflict. • Creating a JSONP Formatter for ASP.NET Web API

  Out of the box ASP.NET WebAPI does not include a JSONP formatter, but it's actually very easy to create a custom formatter that implements this functionality. JSONP is one way to allow Browser based JavaScript client applications to bypass cross-site scripting limitations and serve data from the non-current Web server. AJAX in Web Applications uses the XmlHttp object which by default doesn't allow access to remote domains. There are number of ways around this limitation <script> tag loading and JSONP is one of the easiest and semi-official ways that you can do this. JSONP works by combining JSON data and wrapping it into a function call that is executed when the JSONP data is returned. If you use a tool like jQUery it's extremely easy to access JSONP content. Imagine that you have a URL like this: http://RemoteDomain/aspnetWebApi/albums which on an HTTP GET serves some data - in this case an array of record albums. This URL is always directly accessible from an AJAX request if the URL is on the same domain as the parent request. However, if that URL lives on a separate server it won't be easily accessible to an AJAX request. Now, if  the server can serve up JSONP this data can be accessed cross domain from a browser client. Using jQuery it's really easy to retrieve the same data with JSONP:function getAlbums() { $.getJSON("http://remotedomain/aspnetWebApi/albums?callback=?",null, function (albums) { alert(albums.length); }); } The resulting callback the same as if the call was to a local server when the data is returned. jQuery deserializes the data and feeds it into the method. Here the array is received and I simply echo back the number of items returned. From here your app is ready to use the data as needed. This all works fine - as long as the server can serve the data with JSONP. What does JSONP look like? JSONP is a pretty simple 'protocol'. All it does is wrap a JSON response with a JavaScript function call. The above result from the JSONP call looks like this:Query17103401925975181569_1333408916499( [{"Id":"34043957","AlbumName":"Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap",…},{…}] ) The way JSONP works is that the client (jQuery in this case) sends of the request, receives the response and evals it. The eval basically executes the function and deserializes the JSON inside of the function. It's actually a little more complex for the framework that does this, but that's the gist of what happens. JSONP works by executing the code that gets returned from the JSONP call. JSONP and ASP.NET Web API As mentioned previously, JSONP support is not natively in the box with ASP.NET Web API. But it's pretty easy to create and plug-in a custom formatter that provides this functionality. The following code is based on Christian Weyers example but has been updated to the latest Web API CodePlex bits, which changes the implementation a bit due to the way dependent objects are exposed differently in the latest builds. The biggest change is that the Read/Write functions no longer receive a global context object that gives access to the Request and Response objects as the older bits did. Instead you now have to override the GetPerRequestFormatterInstance() method, which receives the Request as a parameter. You can capture the Request there, or use the request to pick up the values you need and store them on the formatter. Note that I also have to create a new instance of the formatter since I'm storing request specific state on the instance (information whether the callback= querystring is present) so I return a new instance of this formatter. Other than that the code should be straight forward: The code basically writes out the function pre- and post-amble and the defers to the base stream to retrieve the JSON to wrap the function call into. The code uses the Async APIs to write this data out (this will take some getting used to seeing all over the place for me). Hooking up the JsonpFormatter Once you've created a formatter, it has to be added to the request processing sequence by adding it to the formatter collection. Note that I added the formatter at the top of the list of formatters, rather than adding it to the end which is required. The JSONP formatter needs to fire before any other JSON formatter since it relies on the JSON formatter to encode the actual JSON data. If you reverse the order the JSONP output never shows up. So, in general when adding new formatters also try to be aware of the order of the formatters as they are added. • Software for "High-level" source code (C++) Management

  after a lot of small-medium projects, I have a lot of libraries and test programs here and there. Also, I must admit that some of the "best practices" I learnt are not that "good" IMHO. In particular, documenting your code and making a "high-level" documentation is not useful in practice: High-level documentation are not maintain up to date = I prefer to read the source code directly; Browsing generated developer documentation is a pain (IMHO) = I prefer to read the source code directly. For that reason, I am looking for a tool who could help me organize all my source code directories in a more "readable manner". What I need is a tool which: Maintains an UML diagram from C++ source code. I don't need source code generation from UML; USE CASE: I am in this super-tool, I notice a design issue, I change the source code, when I get back, the UML diagram is updated; Maintains easily browsable call graphs; Lists references to methods, variables, etc. For example, when I want to see where/when a method is called; Helps writing pseudo-code from C++; Embeds a nice C++ source code browser; Is Open Source would be great; Works at least on Win7. The focus of this tool should be to browse source code to understand what's going on. For example, when you have a newcomer and you need him to go through source code. Do you know any great tool? Thanks in advance. PS: please do not answer doxygen (great tool however).

When Software is advertised, it is usually Software for one (or more) specific purpose, such as: Mozilla Firefox - A Web Browser Ubuntu - An Operating System Python - A Programming Language Visual Studio - A Development Studio ... And so on. But when writing Libraries, that is, Software that doesn't necessarily serve one specific purpose, but instead multiple purposes, which are usually supposed to be used inside an application, such as: Irrlicht - A 3D Engine Qt - An Application Framework I'm a developer of the latter kind of Software, and I naturally want to advertise my Software. It's not commercial Software; It's not GPL either. It's completely free (Licensed under the MIT License :-)). I naturally host my stuff at github, which technically makes it very easy to access the software, and I thought that these might be possible options, although I have no experience with them: Submit the Software to Freshmeat, and hope for the best Submit the Software to Sourceforge, and hope someone accidently stumbles over it Write spammails, and get death threats via Mail ... But something tells me that these methods are probably not the best Methods. So, my final question would be, How does the Average Joe Hobby Programmer advertise his/her Software Library? • New Release Overview Part 1

  Ladies & Gentlemen, I have been getting a lot of questions over the last month or two about the next release of WCI codenamed "Neo". Unfortunately I cannot give you an exact release date which I know you all would be asking me for if we were talking face to face, but I can definitely provide you with information about some of the features that will be made available. So over the next few blog entries, I am going to provide you with details about two features and even provide you with screenshots for some of them. KD Browser Portlet This portlet will provide a windows explorer look and feel to the Knowledge Directory from with a Community Page or My Page. Not only will the portlet provide access to the folder structure and the documents within, but the user or community manager will also have the ability to modify what is being shown. From with a preferences page, the user or community manager can change what top-level folders are shown within the folder structure as well as what properties are available for each document that is shown. There are also a number of other portlet specific customizations available as well. Embedded Tagging Engine As some of you might be aware, there was a product made available just prior to the Oracle acquisition known as Pathways which gave users the ability to add tags to documents that were either in the Knowledge Directory or in the Collaboration Documents section. Although this product is no longer available separately for customers to purchase, we definitely did feel that the functionality was important and interesting enough that other customers should have access to it. The decision was made for this release to embed the original Pathways product as the Tagging Engine for WCI and Collaboration. This tagging engine will allow a user to add tags to a document as well as through the Collaboration Documents section. Once the tags are added to the Tagging Engine and associated with documents, then a user will have the ability to filter the documents when processing a search according to the Tags Cloud that will now be available on the Search Results page and this will be true no matter what kind of search is being processed. In addition to all of that, all of the Pathways portlets will also be available for users to add to their My Page.

• Open Multiple Sites Without Reopening the Menus in Firefox

  Are you frustrated with having to reopen your menus for each website that you need or want to view? Now you can keep those menus open while opening multiple websites with the Stay-Open Menu extension for Firefox. Stay-Open Menu in Action You can start using the extension as soon as you have installed it…simply access your favorite links in the “Bookmarks Menu, Bookmarks Toolbar, Awesome Bar, or History Menu” and middle click on the appropriate entries. Here you can see our browser opening the Productive Geek website and that the “Bookmarks Menu” is still open. As soon as you left click on a link or click outside the menus they will close normally like before. Note: Middle clicked links open in new tabs. The only time during our tests that a newly opened link “remained in the background” was for any links opened from the “Awesome Bar”. But as soon as the “Awesome Bar” was closed the new tabs automatically focused to the front. A link being opened from the “History Menu”…still open while the webpage is loading. Options The options are simple to sort through…enable or disable the additional “stay open” functions and enable automatic menu closing if desired. Conclusion If you get frustrated with having to reopen menus to access multiple webpages at one time then you might want to give this extension a try. • JMX Based Monitoring - Part One

  In all versions of the Oracle Utilities Application Framework there is an ability to use Java Management eXtensions (JMX) to both manage and monitor the various components of the product. This means that sites can use a JSR120 compliant JMX browser or JMX console to view or manage the components of the product with little or no configuration required. In each version we have progressively added JMX capabilities to allow IT groups more detailed information. In Oracle Utilities Application Framework V2.1 and above it was possible to use JMX on the Web Application Server provided Mbeans to allow you to monitor the online component of the product as well as manage the configuration. Also with a few additional java options it is possible to get a good level of detail about the Java Virtual machine including memory and thread usage. In Oracle Utilities Application Framework V2.2 and above, we added support for Java 5 statistics (Java enabled them by default), database pool statistics and also added the ability to manage and moinitor the batch component of the architecture. Now, in Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4 and above, we added support for Java 6 MXBeans, online management of the cache using JMX, additional JVM information and Performance monitoring using JMX. JMX allows the product to be managed from a common console such as Oracle Enterprise Manager, Tivoli, HP OpenView (and a lot more). Over the next week or so I will be compiling a set of blog entries discussing what is available (in summary format) using JMX and how to get access to the JMX statistics for your version of the product.

• Page debugging got easier in UCM 11g

  UCM is famous for it's extra parameters you can add to the URL to do different things. You can add &IsJava=1 to get all of the local data and result set information that comes back from the idc_service. You can add &IsSoap=1 and get back a SOAP message with that information. Or &IsJson=1 will send it in JSON format. There are ones that change the display like &coreContentOnly=1 which will hide the footer and navigation on the page. In 10g, you could add &ScriptDebugTrace=1 and it would display the list of resources that were called through includes or eval functions at the bottom of the page. And it would list them in nested order so you could see the order in which they were called and which components overrode each other. But in 11g, that parameter flag no longer works. Instead, you get a much more powerful one called &IsPageDebug=1. When you add that to a page, you get a small gray tab at the bottom right-hand part of the browser window. When you click it, it will expand and let you choose several pieces of information to display. You can select 'idocscript trace' and display the nested includes you used to get with ScriptDebugTrace. You can select 'initial binder' and see the local data and result sets coming back from the service, just as you would with IsJava. But in this display, it formats the results in easy to read tables (instead of raw HDA format). Then you can get the final binder which would contain all of the local data and result sets after executing all of the includes for the display of the page (and not just from the Service call). And then a 'javascript log' for reporting on the javascript functions and times being executed on the page. Together, these new data displays make page debugging much easier in 11g. *Note: This post also applies to Universal Records Management (URM).

• Plex won't enter my home directory or other partitions

  I just installed the Plex media server from the Ubuntu Software Center, and opened the web interface. I wanted to start by adding a collection. When it gave me a file browser, I wanted to go to /home/robin/Videos. /home is as far as I got. It showed robin, with an arrow in front of it, but when I tried to expand the directory tree it was empty. The same happened when trying to access /media/Data. For me it's quite useless like this, as all of my media files are inside those 2 directories. Help would be much appreciated. My first guess seemed to be a correct one; It is, as always, a permissions problem. How do I give plex access to my home folder without also giving other users access to it? • ASP 3.0 Folder/File Permissions Settings (ASP Classic)

  Dear Stack Exchange, Hi, I have built a form input page in HTML that has an action to post to an ASP handler/processor .asp file. The form handler/processor .asp file contains only <% Insert VBScript Here % and no HTML output whatsoever. The .asp file was never intended to be a "web viewable" .asp file like an .asp home page file or html file would. It's supposed to be for my eyes only- not the public's however it does need to take info posted by the public and do something with it on it's end. I have used VBScript/ASP3.0 to build the form handler/processor file and would like to know how to keep someone from viewing the actual VBScript in the handler/processor .asp file. I am aware of obfuscation but I would like to know how to keep prying eyes from even being able to take a look at the obfuscated code in the handler/processor file. I realize that the server executes the .asp file first before outputting anything to the browser so I guess that my main concern is mostly that someone may could "download" the form handler/processor .asp file, then view it's contents on their machine. Assuming the form handler .asp file is where it is, behind the root, and is on a windows server (no htaccess approach) how could one protect it so that it could never be viewed or simply pulled down via anonymous ftp or something like that? Is there something like "script only" permissions that the system administrator could set up for a particular folder? Remember, with shared hosting I can't go above the root. If so, would the form still be able to post? How would any of you guys go about protecting the asp file in addition to obfuscation? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, ASP Pee-Wee

• In-Application Support Made Easier

  With the availability of Oracle UPK 3.6.1 and Enablement Service Pack 1 for Oracle UPK 3.6.1 (Oracle Support login required for both), there are quite a few changes for content admins to absorb. In addition to the support added for dozens of application releases, patches and new target applications, we've also added features to make implementing and using In-Application Support even easier. First, the old Help Menu Integration Guides have been updated and combined into a single In-Application Support Guide. If you integrate UPK content for user assistance, or if you're interested in doing so, read the new guide! It covers all the integration steps, including a section on the new In-Application Support Configuration Utility. If you've integrated content in multiple languages, or if you've ever had to make configuration changes for UPK Help Integration, then you know how cumbersome it was to manually edit javascript files. No longer! The Player now includes a configuration utility that provides a web browser interface for setting all In-Application Support options. From the main screen, you see a list of applications covered by the published content. Clicking on an application name takes you to the edit configuration screen where you can set all Player options for that application. No more digging through the Player folders to find the right javascript file to edit. No complicated javascript syntax to make changes. And with Enablement Service Pack 1 we've added a new feature we're calling the Tabbed Gateway. The Tabbed Gateway is a top-level navigation bar for Help Integration. And all tabs, links, and text are controlled with the Configuration Utility... I think the Tabbed Gateway is a really cool and exciting feature for content launch.
