  This stems from a recent couple of posts I've made on events and memory management in general. I'm making a new question as I don't think the software I'm using has anything to do with the overall problem and I'm trying to understand a little more about how to properly manage things. This is ASP.NET. I've been trying to understand the needs for Dispose/Finalize over the past few days and believe that I've got to a stage where I'm pretty happy with when I should/shouldn't implement the Dispose/Finalize. 'If I have members that implement IDisposable, put explicit calls to their dispose in my dispose method' seems to be my understanding. So, now I'm thinking maybe my understanding of object lifetimes and what holds on to what is just wrong! Rather than come up with some sample code that I think will illustrate my point, I'm going to describe as best I can actual code and see if someone can talk me through it. So, I have a repository class, in it I have a DataContext that I create when the repository is created. I implement IDisposable, and when my calling object is done, I call Dispose on my repository and explicitly call DataContext.Dispose( ). Now, one of the methods of this class creates and returns a list of objects that's handed back to my front end. Front End - Controller - Repository - Controller - Front End. (Using Redgate Memory Profiler, I take a snapshot of my software when the page is first loaded). My front end creates a controller object on page load and then makes a request to the repository sending back a list of items. When the page is finished loading, I call Dispose on the controller which in turn calls dispose on the context. In my mind, that should mean that my connection is closed and that I have no instances of my controller class. If I then refresh the page, it jumps to two 'Live' instances of the controller class. If I look at the object retention graph, the objects I created in my call to the list are being held onto ultimately by what looks like Linq. The controller/repository aside, if I create a list of objects somewhere, or I create an object and return it somewhere, am I safe to just assume that .NET will eventually come and clean things up for me or is there a best practice? The 'Live' instances suggest to me that these are still in memory and active objects, the fact that RMP apparently forces GC doesn't mean anything?

• How to add a title attribute to every option of an ASP.NET DropDownList

  I'm working on an older ASP.NET project (not MVC I don't think) and one of the features they require is to view a description of an item when they hover over that item in a dropdown list. This can be simply done with HTML using the following code and making use of title text: <select> <option value="1" title="Option 1 Desc">Option 1</option> <option value="2" title="Option 2 Desc">Option 2</option> <option value="3" title="Option 3 Desc">Option 3</option> </select> Ok so how do I do this using ASP.NET DropDownList control? I just want to be able to put a title attribute on each <option> that gets rendered and put the description into it. Either that or be able to add a custom attribute like 'data-description' to each <option> tag then I can add the title into each option tag myself using a bit of jQuery which is easy enough. I miss the days where you could just loop through a list and output the custom dropdown code manually. Any ideas? Many thanks

• Inlining an array of non-default constructible objects in a C++ class

  C++ doesn't allow a class containing an array of items that are not default constructible: class Gordian { public: int member; Gordian(int must_have_variable) : member(must_have_variable) {} }; class Knot { Gordian* pointer_array[8]; // Sure, this works. Gordian inlined_array[8]; // Won't compile. Can't be initialized. }; As even beginner C++ users know, the language guarantees that all members are initialized when constructing a class. And it doesn't trust the user to initialize everything in the constructor - one has to provide valid arguments to the constructors of all members before the body of the constructor even starts. Generally, that's a great idea as far as I'm concerned, but I've come across a situation where it would be a lot easier if I could actually have an array of non-default constructible objects. The obvious solution: Have an array of pointers to the objects. This is not optimal in my case, as I am using shared memory. It would force me to do extra allocation from an already contended resource (that is, the shared memory). The entire reason I want to have the array inlined in the object is to reduce the number of allocations. This is a situation where I would be willing to use a hack, even an ugly one, provided it works.   I have a flat array that I'm trying to make multidimensional. Basically, I want to find the items that have parents and create a subarray for that parent id.   Hi, I want to create a 2 way bind between a listbox and a .NET list. In my GUI, I have a listbox, a textbox and add and remove buttons. The listbox displays cars, and my goal is to create a 2way bind between the .Net car list and the listbox: when the user enters a car into the textbox, it gets updated only in the .Net list, and the listbox is updated automatically. When the user press the GUI "remove" button, a car gets removed from the GUI and the .Net list is updated automatically.   We are developing an inventory tracking system. Basically we've got an order table in which orders are placed. When an order is payed, the status changes from 0 to 1. This table has multiple children in another table order_items. This is the main structure. • wxWidgets: Show a window that was marked hidden in the XRC

  I'm new to wxWidgets and DialogBlocks. I have a form that is created using DialogBlocks and saved as an XRC file. Part of the form has a vertical wxStaticBoxSizer into which is placed two wxScrolledWindow elements. I want to only show one at a time based on what data is to be shown to the user, so I have one marked hidden and left the other one visible. In code (C++), when I try to switch the display and show the widget that was hidden in the XRC and hide the one that was not, the one that I hide goes away fine, but the one that I want to show is not visible. If I resize the window however, it appears. Once it has appeard then I can switch back and forth with no issues. I tried many combinations of showing, enabling, invalidating, getting the sizer and calling RecalcSizes, refresh, layout, and some others. I tried them in different combinations too. Simply calling Show will allow me to toggle between the two, but only after I switch to the one that does not show initially and resize the window. From what I see in the docs. the issue is that wxSizer doesn't allocate space for hidden windows, but there is a flag that can be set to override that behavor. My problem is that DialogBlocks does not expose that feature, so if I manually edit the XRC file the modifation will be lost when I, or one of the other devs. saves some changes. Is ther a sequence of calls that I can make to tell the sizer to allocate space? The default OnResize handler does something to cause the sizer to allocate space, but I don't know what that is, or how to do it. This is the flag I found in the docs: wxRESERVE_SPACE_EVEN_IF_HIDDEN Normally wxSizers don't allocate space for hidden windows or other items. This flag overrides this behavior so that sufficient space is allocated for the window even if it isn't visible. This makes it possible to dynamically show and hide controls without resizing parent dialog, for example. This function is new since wxWidgets version 2.8.8 Thanks in advance.

  I'm trying to iterate a bunch of SELECT OPTION html drop-down fields and from the ones that are NOT empty, take the values and add a hidden field for a PAYPAL shopping cart. My problem is that for some reason, the variable "curitem" is not passed inside the each function and I can't add the hidden field like they should. All I get is "NaN" or "undefined". What PAYPAL expect is : item_name_1, item_name_2, etc. All numbers must iterate by +1. How can I do this?   Hi, I'm learning cocoa/objective-c. Right now I'm dealing with key/value coding. After reading Aaron's book and other sources, I thought that I was able to left the simple examples and try a complex one... I'm trying read iTunes property list (iTunes Music Library.xml). I would like to retrieve the tracks held by an specific playlist. The problem is that I'm not able to figure out how to search for a key that is inside another one. With the following code I can find the the array in which the playlists are stored, but how to find an specific <dict>? I have a MainWindow which contains a ListBox and a Button (lets say addButton). When i click the button i navigate to a new page, lets say AddCustomerPage with this.Frame.Navigate(typeof (AddCustomerPage)); AddCustomerPage has 1 textBox and 1 button (lets say doneButton. When i click the button i want the string in the textBox to be added to the ListBox on the previous page. This is my current functionality: 1. MainWindow is created. Click addButton AddCustomer page is created. MainWindow is destroyed(problem). Click doneButton A MainWindow object is created with a ListBox with 1 item. Repeat the add process, i always get a MainWindow with a ListBox with 1 item. Thanks for the help. • Error installing pkgconfig via macports

  I installed Macports 1.8.2 from a DMG. That seemed to install fine. I ran sudo port selfupdate to make sure my ports tree was current. I then tried to install bindfs as I want to mount some directories in my OS X file system (like you can do with mount --bind in linux). pkgconfig and macfuse are two dependencies of bindfs. • Setting up RADIUS + LDAP for WPA2 on Ubuntu

  I'm setting up a wireless network for ~150 users. In short, I'm looking for a guide to set RADIUS server to authenticate WPA2 against a LDAP. On Ubuntu. I got a working LDAP, but as it is not in production use, it can very easily be adapted to whatever changes this project may require. I've been looking at FreeRADIUS, but any RADIUS server will do. We got a separate physical network just for WiFi, so not too many worries about security on that front. Our AP's are HP's low end enterprise stuff - they seem to support whatever you can think of. All Ubuntu Server, baby! And the bad news: I now somebody less knowledgeable than me will eventually take over administration, so the setup has to be as "trivial" as possible. So far, our setup is based only on software from the Ubuntu repositories, with exception of our LDAP administration web application and a few small special scripts. So no "fetch package X, untar, ./configure"-things if avoidable. UPDATE 2009-08-18: While I found several useful resources, there is one serious obstacle: Ignoring EAP-Type/tls because we do not have OpenSSL support. Ignoring EAP-Type/ttls because we do not have OpenSSL support. Ignoring EAP-Type/peap because we do not have OpenSSL support. Basically the Ubuntu version of FreeRADIUS does not support SSL (bug 183840), which makes all the secure EAP-types useless. Bummer. I got a certificate from http://CACert.org (you should probably get a "real" cert if possible) Then I followed the instructions at http://vuksan.com/linux/dot1x/802-1x-LDAP.html. This links to http://tldp.org/HOWTO/html_single/8021X-HOWTO/, which is a very worthwhile read if you want to know how WiFi security works.
