• Database Migration Scripts: Getting from place A to place B

  We’ll be looking at a typical database ‘migration’ script which uses an unusual technique to migrate existing ‘de-normalised’ data into a more correct form. So, the book-distribution business that uses the PUBS database has gradually grown organically, and has slipped into ‘de-normalisation’ habits. What’s this? A new column with a list of tags or ‘types’ assigned to books. Because books aren’t really in just one category, someone has ‘cured’ the mismatch between the database and the business requirements. This is fine, but it is now proving difficult for their new website that allows searches by tags. Any request for history book really has to look in the entire list of associated tags rather than the ‘Type’ field that only keeps the primary tag. We have other problems. The TypleList column has duplicates in there which will be affecting the reporting, and there is the danger of mis-spellings getting there. The reporting system can’t be persuaded to do reports based on the tags and the Database developers are complaining about the unCoddly things going on in their database. We’ve even put in a check to prevent it being re-run once the new tables are created. Here is the diagram of the new tag relationship We’ve done both the DDL to create the tables and their associated components, and the DML to put the data in them. I could have also included the script to remove the de-normalised TypeList column, but I’d do a whole lot of tests first before doing that. Yes, I’ve left out the assertion tests too, which should check the edge cases and make sure the result is what you’d expect. One thing I can’t quite figure out is how to deal with an ordered list using this simple XML-based technique. We can ensure that, if we have to produce a list of tags, we can get the primary ‘type’ to be first in the list, but what if the entire order is significant? Thank goodness it isn’t in this case. If it were, we might have to revisit a string-splitter function that returns the ordinal position of each component in the sequence. You’ll see immediately that we can create a synchronisation script for deployment from a comparison tool such as SQL Compare, to change the schema (DDL). On the other hand, no tool could do the DML to stuff the data into the new table, since there is no way that any tool will be able to work out where the data should go. We used some pretty hairy code to deal with a slightly untypical problem. We would have to do this migration by hand, and it has to go into source control as a batch. If most of your database changes are to be deployed by an automated process, then there must be a way of over-riding this part of the data synchronisation process to do this part of the process taking the part of the script that fills the tables, Checking that the tables have not already been filled, and executing it as part of the transaction. Of course, you might prefer the approach I’ve taken with the script of creating the tables in the same batch as the data conversion process, and then using the presence of the tables to prevent the script from being re-run. The problem with scripting a refactoring change to a database is that it has to work both ways. If we install the new system and then have to rollback the changes, several books may have been added, or had their tags changed, in the meantime. Yes, you have to script any rollback! These have to be mercilessly tested, and put in source control just in case of the rollback of a deployment after it has been in place for any length of time. So, we’ve improved the database for the poor book distributors using PUBS. It is not a major deal but you’ve got to be prepared to provide a migration script that will go both forwards and backwards. Ideally, database refactoring scripts should be able to go from any version to any other. Schema synchronization scripts can do this pretty easily, but no data synchronisation scripts can deal with serious refactoring jobs without the developers being able to specify how to deal with cases like this.

• Session Evaluations

  I do a lot of public speaking. I write, teach, present and communicate at many levels. I love to do those things. And I love to get better at them. And one of the ways you get better at something is to get feedback on how you did. That being said, I have to confess that I really despise the “evaluations” I get at most venues. From college to technical events to other locations, at Microsoft and points in between, I find these things to be just shy of damaging, and most certainly useless. And it’s not always your fault. Ouch. That seems harsh. But let me ask you one question – and be as honest as you can with the answer – think about it first: “What is the point of a session evaluation?” I’m not saying there isn’t one. In fact, I think there’s a really important reason for them. In my mind, it’s really this: To make the speaker / next session better. Now, if you look at that, you can see right away that most session evals don’t accomplish this goal – not even a little. No, the way that they are worded and the way you (and I) fill them out, it’s more like the implied goal is this: Tell us how you liked this speaker / session. The current ones are for you, not for the speaker or the next person. It’s a popularity contest. Don’t get me wrong. I want to you have a good time. I want you to learn. I want (desperately, oh, please oh please) for you to like me. But in fact, that’s probably not why you went to the session / took the class / read that post. No, you want to learn, and to learn for a particular reason. Remember, I’m talking about college classes, sessions and other class environments here, not a general public event. Most – OK, all – session evaluations make you answer the second goal, not the first. Let’s see how: First, they don’t ask you why you’re there. They don’t ask you if you’re even qualified to evaluate the session or speaker. They don’t ask you how to make it better or keep it great. They use odd numeric scales that are meaningless. For instance, can someone really tell me the difference between a 100-level session and a 200-level one? Between a 400-level and a 500? Is it “internals” (whatever that means) or detail, or length or code, or what? I once heard a great description: A 100-level session makes me say, “wow - I’m smart.” A 500-level session makes me say “wow – that presenter is smart.” And just what is the difference between a 6 and a 7 answer on this question: How well did the speaker know the material? 1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9  10 Oh. My. Gosh. How does that make the next session better, or the speaker? And what criteria did you use to answer? And is a “10” better than a “1” (not always clear, and various cultures answer this differently). When it’s all said and done, a speaker basically finds out one thing from the current session evals: “They liked me. They really really liked me.” Or, “Wow. I think I may need to schedule some counseling for the depression I’m about to go into.” You may not think that’s what the speaker hears, but trust me, they do. Those are the only two reactions to the current feedback sheets they get. Either they keep doing what they are doing, or they get their feelings hurt. They just can’t use the information provided to do better. Sorry, but there it is. Keep in mind I do want your feedback. I want to get better. I want you to get your money and time’s worth, probably as much as any speaker alive. But I want those evaluations to be accurate, specific and actionable. I want to know if you had a good time, sure, but I also want to know if I did the right things, and if not, if I can do something different or better. And so, for your consideration, here is the evaluation form I would LOVE for you to use. Feel free to copy it and mail it to me any time. I’m going to put some questions here, and then I’ll even include why they are there. Notice that the form asks you a subjective question right away, and then makes you explain why. That’s work on your part. Notice also that it separates the room and the coffee and the lights and the LiveMeeting from the presenter. So many presenters are faced with circumstances beyond their control, and yet are rated high or low personally on those things. This form helps tease those apart. It’s not numeric. Numbers are easier for the scoring committees but are useless for you and me. So I don’t have any numbers. We’re actually going to have to read these things, not put them in a machine. Hey, if you put in the work to write stuff down, the least we could do is take the time to read it. It’s not anonymous. If you’ve got something to say, say it, and own up to it. People are not “more honest” when they are anonymous, they are less honest. So put your name on it. In fact – this is radical – I posit that these evaluations should be publicly available. Forever. Just like replies to a blog post. Hey, if I’m an organizer, I would LOVE to be able to have access to specific, actionable information on the attendees and the speakers. So if you want mine to be public, go for it. I’ll take the good and the bad. When I send small file like 1kb txt everything is ok, but when I send larger file like 100 kb jpg or 2gb psd I get: The remote server returned an unexpected response: (400) Bad Request. • Help with Design for Vacation Tracking System (C#/.NET/Access/WebServices/SOA/Excel) [closed]

  I have been tasked with developing a system for tracking our company's paid time-off (vacation, sick days, etc.) At the moment we are using an Excel spreadsheet on a shared network drive, and it works pretty well, but we are concerned that we won't be able to "trust" employees forever and sometimes we run into locking issues when two people try to open the spreadsheet at once. So we are trying to build something a little more robust. I would like some input on this design in terms of maintainability, scalability, extensibility, etc. It's a pretty simple workflow we need to represent right now: I started with a basic MS Access schema like this: Employees (EmpID int, EmpName varchar(50), AllowedDays int) Vacations (VacationID int, EmpID int, BeginDate datetime, EndDate datetime) But we don't want to spend a lot of time building a schema and database like this and have to change it later, so I think I am going to go with something that will be easier to expand through configuration. Right now the vacation table has this schema: Vacations (VacationID int, PropName varchar(50), PropValue varchar(50)) And the table will be populated with data like this: VacationID | PropName | PropValue -----------+--------------+------------------ 1 | EmpID | 4 1 | EmpName | James Jones 1 | Reason | Vacation 1 | BeginDate | 2/24/2010 1 | EndDate | 2/30/2010 1 | Destination | Spectate Swamp 2 | ... | ... I think this is a pretty good, extensible design, we can easily add new properties to the vacation like the destination or maybe approval status, etc. I wasn't too sure how to go about managing the database of valid properties, I thought of putting them in a separate PropNames table but it gets complicated to manage all the different data types and people say that you shouldn't put CLR type names into a SQL database, so I decided to use XML instead, here is the schema: <VacationProperties> <PropertyNames>EmpID,EmpName,Reason,BeginDate,EndDate,Destination</PropertyNames> <PropertyTypes>System.Int32,System.String,System.String,System.DateTime,System.DateTime,System.String</PropertyTypes> <PropertiesRequired>true,true,false,true,true,false</PropertiesRequired> </VacationProperties> I might need more fields than that, I'm not completely sure. We have a diagram that looks like the following (it's kind of hard to read but the main items are Activities, Authenticators, Validators, Transformers, Processors, and Data Connections, they're all analogous to the services in the SOA diagram above). The requirements for this system are: (Note - I don't control these, they were given to me by management) Main workflow must interface with Excel spreadsheet, probably through VBA macros (to ease the transition to the new system) Alerts should integrate with MS Outlook, Lotus Notes, and SMS (text messages). We also want to interface it with the company Voice Mail system but that is not a "hard" requirement. Performance requirements: Must handle 250,000 Transactions Per Second Should be able to handle up to 20,000 employees (right now we have 3) 99.99% uptime ("four nines") expected Must be secure against outside hacking, but users cannot be required to enter a username/password. Platforms: Must support Windows XP/Vista/7, Linux, iPhone, Blackberry, DOS 2.0, VAX, IRIX, PDP-11, Apple IIc. Time to complete: 6 to 8 weeks. My questions are: Is this a good design for the system so far? Am I using all of the recommended best practices for these technologies? How do I integrate the Visio diagram above with the Windows Workflow Foundation to call the ConfigurationService and persist workflow changes? Am I missing any important components? Will this be extensible enough to support any scenario via end-user configuration? Will the system scale to the above performance requirements? Will we need any expensive hardware to run it? Are there any "gotchas" I should know about with respect to cross-platform compatibility? For example would it be difficult to convert this to an iPhone app? How long would you expect this to take?   So I've been working on trying to figure this out, oddly when I ran it one machine I got a generic Axis Fault with no description, but now on another machine I'm getting a different error message, but I'm still stuck. Basically I'm just trying to do what I thought would be a fairly trivial task of creating a new incident in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 via a web services call. I started by downloading the XML from http://hostname/MSCrmServices/2007/CrmService.asmx and generating code from it using Axis2.   I would like to do something like that: An object ReportingFile that can be a LogRequest or a LogReport file. ( both got the same structure) An object Reporting containing for one logRequest, a list of logReport with a date. I tryed to set an EmbededId, that would be an attribute of the logRequest. And that's the problem i got. I don't arrive to mannage embedded id. • Initializing SD card in SPI issues

  Sorry for the length of this question, but I thought it best to show as much detail to fend of questions asking if I had done A when I had already done A... ;-) I've had a look at the "micro-SD card initialization using SPI interface" thread and didn't see any answers that matched my issue (i.e. things I haven't already tried). I have a similar issue where I'm trying to access a SD card through a micro-controller's SPI interface (specifically an HC908). I've tried following the flow charts in the Physical Layer Simplified Specification v2.00 and it seems to initialize correctly on Transcend 1GB & 2GB and an AE&C 1GB card. But I'm having problems on 3 other random cards from my stash of old cards that I've used on my camera. My code is all HC908 assembler. I scoped out the SPI clock line and during initialization it's running about 350kHz (the only speed multiplier that the HC908 supplies at my low MCU clock speed that falls within the 100-400kHz window). Here are the results of the three cards that aren't completing my initialization routine (all done consecutively w/o changing any code or timing parameters): Canon 16Meg card (labeled as SD): Set card select high Send 80 SPI clock cycles (done by writing 0xFF 10 times) Set card select low Send CMD0 [0x400000000095] and Loop up to 8 times waiting for high bit on response to go low R1 = 0x01 (indicates idle) Send CMD8 [0x48000001AA87] and Loop up to 8 times waiting for high bit on response to go low R1 = 0x05 (idle and illegal command) Because illegal command set local flag to indicate v1 or MMC card Send CMD58 [0x7A00000000FD] and Loop up to 8 times waiting for high bit on response to go low R1 = 0x05 (idle and illegal command) because illegal command branch to error routine Send CMD13 [0x4D000000000D] (show status buffer) and Loop up to 8 times waiting for high bit on response to go low R1= 0x05 (idle and illegal command) Is the illegal command flag stuck? Code craps out because Illegal command bit is high. WTF is wrong with that card? Sometimes in sync, other times not. (The above pattern is repeatable.) I've scoped this one out and I'm not seeing any rogue clock cycles going through between MOSI/MISO transfers. Anyone have any clues? Need any more info? • Mixed-mode C++/CLI crashing: heap corruption in atexit (static destructor registration)

  I am working on deploying a program and the codebase is a mixture of C++/CLI and C#. The C++/CLI comes in all flavors: native, mixed (/clr), and safe (/clr:safe). In my development environment I create a DLL of all the C++/CLI code and reference that from the C# code (EXE). This method works flawlessly. For my releases that I want to release a single executable (simply stating that "why not just have a DLL and EXE separate?" is not acceptable). So far I have succeeded in compiling the EXE with all the different sources. However, when I run it I get the "XXXX has stopped working" dialog with options to Check online, Close and Debug. If I tell Visual Studio to continue, the program starts up fine and seems to work without incident, probably since a debugger is now attached. What do you make of this? It seems that the CRT atexit function is responsible, being inadvertently required due to the static initializer. Fix As Ben Voigt pointed out the use of any CRT functions (including native static initializers) requires proper initialization of the CRT (which happens in mainCRTStartup, WinMainCRTStartup, or _DllMainCRTStartup). However since the heap corruption is fixed (by getting the CRT initialized) the question is done.

• Design for Vacation Tracking System

  I have been tasked with developing a system for tracking our company's paid time-off (vacation, sick days, etc.) At the moment we are using an Excel spreadsheet on a shared network drive, and it works pretty well, but we are concerned that we won't be able to "trust" employees forever and sometimes we run into locking issues when two people try to open the spreadsheet at once. So we are trying to build something a little more robust. I would like some input on this design in terms of maintainability, scalability, extensibility, etc. It's a pretty simple workflow we need to represent right now: I started with a basic MS Access schema like this: Employees (EmpID int, EmpName varchar(50), AllowedDays int) Vacations (VacationID int, EmpID int, BeginDate datetime, EndDate datetime) But we don't want to spend a lot of time building a schema and database like this and have to change it later, so I think I am going to go with something that will be easier to expand through configuration. Right now the vacation table has this schema: Vacations (VacationID int, PropName varchar(50), PropValue varchar(50)) And the table will be populated with data like this: VacationID | PropName | PropValue -----------+--------------+------------------ 1 | EmpID | 4 1 | EmpName | James Jones 1 | Reason | Vacation 1 | BeginDate | 2/24/2010 1 | EndDate | 2/30/2010 1 | Destination | Spectate Swamp 2 | ... | ... I think this is a pretty good, extensible design, we can easily add new properties to the vacation like the destination or maybe approval status, etc. I wasn't too sure how to go about managing the database of valid properties, I thought of putting them in a separate PropNames table but it gets complicated to manage all the different data types and people say that you shouldn't put CLR type names into a SQL database, so I decided to use XML instead, here is the schema: <VacationProperties> <PropertyNames>EmpID,EmpName,Reason,BeginDate,EndDate,Destination</PropertyNames> <PropertyTypes>System.Int32,System.String,System.String,System.DateTime,System.DateTime,System.String</PropertyTypes> <PropertiesRequired>true,true,false,true,true,false</PropertiesRequired> </VacationProperties> I might need more fields than that, I'm not completely sure. I've used this code to implement the Web Services: public class VacationConfigurationService : WebService { [WebMethod] public void UpdateConfiguration(string xml) { // Above code goes here } } Which was pretty easy, although I'm still working on a way to validate that XML against some kind of schema as there's no error-checking yet. I also created a few different services for other operations like VacationSubmissionService, VacationReportService, VacationDataService, VacationAuthenticationService, etc. The whole Service Oriented Architecture looks like this: And because the workflow itself might change, I have been working on a way to integrate the WF workflow system with MS Visio, which everybody at the office already knows how to use so they could make changes pretty easily. We have a diagram that looks like the following (it's kind of hard to read but the main items are Activities, Authenticators, Validators, Transformers, Processors, and Data Connections, they're all analogous to the services in the SOA diagram above). The requirements for this system are: (Note - I don't control these, they were given to me by management) Main workflow must interface with Excel spreadsheet, probably through VBA macros (to ease the transition to the new system) Alerts should integrate with MS Outlook, Lotus Notes, and SMS (text messages). We also want to interface it with the company Voice Mail system but that is not a "hard" requirement. Performance requirements: Must handle 250,000 Transactions Per Second Should be able to handle up to 20,000 employees (right now we have 3) 99.99% uptime ("four nines") expected Must be secure against outside hacking, but users cannot be required to enter a username/password. Platforms: Must support Windows XP/Vista/7, Linux, iPhone, Blackberry, DOS 2.0, VAX, IRIX, PDP-11, Apple IIc. Time to complete: 6 to 8 weeks. My questions are: Is this a good design for the system so far? Am I using all of the recommended best practices for these technologies? How do I integrate the Visio diagram above with the Windows Workflow Foundation to call the ConfigurationService and persist workflow changes? Am I missing any important components? Will this be extensible enough to support any scenario via end-user configuration? Will the system scale to the above performance requirements? Will we need any expensive hardware to run it? Are there any "gotchas" I should know about with respect to cross-platform compatibility? For example would it be difficult to convert this to an iPhone app? How long would you expect this to take? (We've dedicated 1 week for testing so I'm thinking maybe 5 weeks?)

• Am I going about this the right way?

  Hey Guys, I'm starting a WPF project, and just finished the base of the UI, it seems very convoluted though, so I'm not sure if I've gone around laying it out in the right way. I don't want to get to start developing the back-end and realise that I've done the front wrong, and make life harder for myself. Coming from a background of <DIV's and CSS to style this is a lot different, and really want to get it right from the start. Essentially it's a one week calendar (7 days, Mon-Sunday, defaulting to the current week.) Which will eventually link up to a DB and if I have an appointment for something on this day it will show it in the relevant day. I've opted for a Grid rather than ListView because of the way it will work I will not be binding the results to a collection or anything along those lines. Rather I will be filling out a Combo box within the canvas for each day (yet to be placed in the code) for each event and on selection it will show me further details. • Delphi Pascal - Using SetFilePointerEx and GetFileSizeEx, Getting Physical Media exact size when reading as a file

  I am having trouble understanding how to delcare GetFileSizeEx and SetFilePointerEx in Delphi 2009 so that I can use them since they are not in the RTL or Windows.pas. I was able to compile with the following: function GetFileSizeEx(hFile: THandle; lpFileSizeHigh: Pointer): DWORD; external 'kernel32'; Then using GetFileSizeEx(PD, Pointer(DriveSize)); to get the size. But could not get it to work, the disk handle I am using is valid and I have had no problem reading the data or working under the 2gb mark with the older API's. GetFileSize of course returns 4294967295. I have had greater trouble trying to use SetFilePointerEx with the data types it uses. The overall project needs to read the data from a flash card, which is not a problem at all I can do this. My problem is that I can not find the length or size of the media I will be reading. I have code I have used in the past to do this with media under 2GB. But now that I need to read media over 2GB it is a problem. If you still dont understand I am dumping a card with all data including the boot record, etc. This is the code I would normally use to read from the physical disk to grab say the boot record and dump it to file: SetFilePointer(PD,0,nil,FILE_BEGIN); SetLength(Buffer,512); ReadFile(PD,Buffer[0],512,BytesReturned,nil); I just need to figure out how to find the end of an 8gb card and so on as well as being able to set a file pointer beyond the 2gb barrier. • Why won't my UISearchDisplayController fire the didSelectRowAtIndexPath moethod?

  I am having an odd problem when searching a UITableView using a UISearchDisplayController. The UITableViewController is a subclass of another UITableViewController with a working didSelectRowAtIndexPath method. Without searching the controller handles selections fine, sending the superclass a didSelectRowAtIndexPath call, but if I select a cell when searching the superclass receives nothing but the cell is highlighted. • Uploadify Minimum Image Width And Height

  So I am using the Uplodify plugin to allow users to upload multiple images at once. The problem is I need to set a minimum width and height for images. Let's say 150x150px is the smallest image users can upload. How can I set this limitation in the Uploadify plugin? When user tries to upload smaller picture, I would like to display some error message as well. • jquery hover not working properly other than IE6

  Hi All, We developed navigation bar using jQuery 1.4.2. Functionality is to show submneus for different menu items when user hovers on it. It is working perfectly in IE6 but we see some weird problems in other browsers. In Firefox, when the page gets loaded, it works fine but when we hit f5, the submenu wont appear on hover. To get submenu we need to click on any other menu item. In Chrome, its the same to add on, some time even we click on any menu item, and hover submenu wont show up. In Safari, nothing shows up most of the times, but on clicking 5-6 menu items, submenu is shown.When we see loading text in safari it shows the submenu. but on every click the loading text wont appear.. We are very much confused..is it the browser behavior/code/jquery?? Previously on other sites, there have no problems or complaints.
