• Easy Credential Caching for Git

  A common question since launching our Git support is whether there is a way to cache your username and password so you don’t have to enter it on every push.  Well thanks to Andrew Nurse from the ASP.Net team, there is now a great solution for this! Credential Caching in Windows to the Rescue Using the Git extension point for credential caching, Andrew created an integration into the Windows Credentials store. After installing git-credential-winstore instead of getting that standard prompt for a username/password, you will get a Windows Security prompt. From here your credentials for CodePlex will be stored securely within the Windows Credential Store. Setup The setup is pretty easy. Download the application from Andrew's git-credential-winstore project. Launch the executable and select yes to have it prompt for credentials. That's it. Make sure you are running the latest version of msysgit, since the credential's API is fairly new. • Add Properties Back to the Context Menu in Firefox

  Have you noticed that the Properties Command has been removed from the Context Menu in Firefox 3.6? If you have been missing it here is how to get it back. Before With the newest version of Firefox you may have noticed a very useful command missing from the “Context Menu”. Here you can see that when we right clicked on the article link we were unable to “access” the properties for it… Same article and the same problem when trying to “access” the properties for one of the images. After Once you have installed the extension you can once again “access” the properties for those links… And those images… Looking very good… Conclusion If you have been frustrated with the removal of the “Properties Command” from the “Context Menu” in Firefox 3.6, you can now add it back in just a few moments. • Advice for a computer science sophomore in college?

  Hi Everyone! I'm a sophomore in college majoring in Computer Science and Math. I have always loved programming. I started programming in C when I was nine years old and over the years I've picked up Visual Basic, C#, Java, C++, JavaScript, Objective-C, Python, Ruby, elementary Haskell and elementary Erlang, and I learned Perl back in the day which I've mostly forgotten. I have not done much network programming. I have done CGI programming, but that was about six/seven years ago. I've done some socket programming and written (school) programs to do interprocess communication, which I understood and liked. I'm taking a course on client/server programming and another one on network security next semester, which I am really looking forward to. I'm seeking advice on how to proceed with future learning. I've mostly done application (mobile and desktop) development, not much of web development. I'd like to pick up some web development this coming semester. Since I know Ruby and Python, should I start by learning Django and/or Rails? Any other suggestions on starting web development? I have a good understanding of HTML and CSS. Also, I'd also like to know how hard it is to pick up and be good (read: productive) in functional programming languages coming from a purely structured/object oriented background? I've been reading up on Erlang and Haskell, and I'd like to know your opinions on whether it's worth my time trying to learn them. What about Lisp, Scheme and other functional languages? Any help/ideas would be really appreciated.

• Examining ASP.NET's Membership, Roles, and Profile - Part 18

  Membership, in a nutshell, is a framework build into the .NET Framework that supports creating, authenticating, deleting, and modifying user account information. Each user account has a set of core properties: username, password, email, a security question and answer, whether or not the account has been approved, whether or not the user is locked out of the system, and so on. These user-specific properties are certainly helpful, but they're hardly exhaustive - it's not uncommon for an application to need to track additional user-specific properties. For example, an online messageboard site might want to also also associate a signature, homepage URL, and IM address with each user account. There are two ways to associate additional information with user accounts when using the Membership model. The first - which affords the greatest flexibility, but requires the most upfront effort - is to create a custom data store for this information. If you are using the SqlMembershipProvider, this would mean creating an additional database table that had as a primary key the UserId value from the aspnet_Users table and columns for each of the additional user properties. The second option is to use the Profile system, which allows additional user-specific properties to be defined in a configuration file. (See Part 6 for an in-depth look at the Profile system.) This article explores how to store additional user information in a separate database table. We'll see how to allow a signed in user to update these additional user-specific properties and how to create a page to display information about a selected user. • [MINI HOW-TO] Create Keyboard Shortcuts to Applications in Windows

  Do you need just one or a few special keyboard shortcuts for your favorite program(s)? A quick modification to program shortcuts will get you up and running without installing additional software. Creating New Keyboard Shortcuts Go to the start menu shortcut for the program, right-click on it, and select properties. When the properties window opens click in the shortcut key text area. All that you need to do is choose an appropriate letter for the program (i.e. O for Opera, E for Editra, etc.) and type it in the blank. You will not need to type any other keys or combination in…the “Ctrl + Alt +” will be automatically entered for you as soon as you type the letter in. Click OK to finish creating the new keyboard shortcut. Those new keyboard shortcuts will speed up access to your favorite software. Another example from our system using “I” for Iron Browser. Certainly much quicker than using the start menu. Conclusion If you only need one or just a few special keyboard shortcuts then this method provides a quick and simple solution.   I'm trying to get my java program to talk to a MySQL DB. So i did some reading and downloaded MySQL Connector/J. I've extracted it into my home directory ~. • After restoring a SQL Server database from another server - get login fails

  Issue: After you have restored a sql server database from another server, lets say from production to a Q/A environment, you get the "Login Fails" message for your service account. Reason: User logon information is stored in the syslogins table in the master database. By changing servers, or by altering this information by rebuilding or restoring an old version of the master database, the information may be different from when the user database dump was created. If logons do not exist for the users, they will receive an error indicating "Login failed" while attempting to log on to the server. If the user logons do exist, but the SUID values (for 6.x) or SID values (for 7.0) in master..syslogins and the sysusers table in the user database differ, the users may have different permissions than expected in the user database. Solution: Links a user entry in the sys.database_principals system catalog view in the current database to a SQL Server login of the same name. If a login with the same name does not exist, one will be created. Examine the result from the Auto_Fix statement to confirm that the correct link is in fact made. Avoid using Auto_Fix in security-sensitive situations. When you use Auto_Fix, you must specify user and password if the login does not already exist, otherwise you must specify user but password will be ignored. login must be NULL. user must be a valid user in the current database. The login cannot have another user mapped to it. execute the following stored procedure, in this example the login user name is "MyUser" exec sp_change_users_login 'Auto_Fix', 'MyUser'   NOTE: sp_change_users_login cannot be used with a SQL Server login created from a Windows principal or with a user created by using CREATE USER WITHOUT LOGIN.

• What free Remote Desktop (server) solutions are there?

  I know Ubuntu comes with a "Remote Desktop" option that appears to be a straightforward VNC server, and I'm trying to understand the alternatives. Here are the possibilities I've heard about so far: VNC VNC + SSH Tunnelling NX Server, free edition FreeNX NeatX X2Go X11 Forwarding over SSH xrdp I'm coming at this from a Windows user's perspective: To the best of my experience, RDP (aka Terminal Services) is a reasonably secure (barring mitm/server spoofing), efficient desktop sharing protocol with well-supported clients, that can be exposed to the internet when necessary without major fears of intrusion. To the best of my knowledge straight VNC is none of those things, which is where I get confused - why wouldn't a better desktop sharing technology be developed or used in the open-source world? I know VNC can be wrapped with SSH, but that seems beyond the reach of a casual user. X11 forwarding over SSH may be more or less efficient, I have no idea, but is definitely even more complicated, and doesn't (as far as I know) give you access to already-running stuff (no desktop sharing as such, just remote application running). So, I'd like any feedback/preferences amongst these or any other "Free" desktop sharing options, using these criteria and/or any others: Security (esp. for access across internet) Efficiency (bandwidth usage, responsiveness, etc) Free-ness, as in Speech (not sure where RDP or FreeNX lie for this) Free-ness, as in Beer (are there any commercial solutions with usable dependable free offerings?) Ease of use (server and client side) Cross-OS Client availability Cross-OS Server availability Support for independent sessions and shared (and/or "Console") sessions Ongoing support/maintenance/development Thanks!

• New P6 Reporting Database R2

  Along with our announced GA release of P6 Analytics R1 recently, you may have noticed that when you purchase P6 Analytics, we provide a restricted use license for P6 Reporting Database R2. This represent an updated version of the previous P6 Reporting Database 6.2 and can be purchased individually on a per-CPU basis. Typically, you will want just the reporting database if you would like the P6 data warehouse components such as the ETL, data models, ODS and star schemas in order to report on that data with another reporting tool other than Oracle. The P6 Analytics solution will only work on Oracle BI (OBI). But I pasted below some examples of a simplistic matrix report that I built from the P6 Reporting Database using Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services. This is the Report Builder tool which is very similar to other similar tools to build reports on the market today such as Crystal Reports or Oracle BI Publisher. This is an example of what you can do (in a very simple format) by using the P6 Reporting Database without P6 Analytics: Here is a quick run-down of some of the key new features in P6 Reporting Database R2 that were added as enhancements to the 6.2 version: • 4 new star schemas (improved projects star, project history, resource utilization and resource allocation) • Improved ETL performance and reliability • P6 security is inherited at the star schema level • Custom P6 project, activity & resource codes are now available as customizable dimensions in the star schemas • Time-phase data down to the data is now available from the star schemas • An updated Operational Data Store (ODS) for operational reporting that includes the WBS hierarchy • The ODS now includes daily spreads for activity and resource assignments

• DRM Tallyrand - The New User Interface

  I received word recently that the Tallyrand (11.1.2.0) build is out of our hands. I'm not sure when it will hit eDelivery, but if it hasn't already it should happen soon. For this post, I want to really quickly show the new user interface. The login screen: When you login, you are browsing versions and hierarchies. Note that Unicode is fully supported: The UI attempts to provide context-sensitive links where possible; notice here that an unloaded version is selected, so the UI shows a link. Clicking the link automatically brings up this Load Version dialog. This same thing applies elsewhere in the UI when you attempt to perform an action with an unloaded version: Here is browsing a hierarchy, with the property grid and context menu displayed (though you can hide the property grid anytime you like to provide more room): Worried about drag and drop? Don't! We support it even though this is a browser app. Also notice the Relationships feature on the right displaying a node's ancestors: Where possible, we try to present the available options, rather than just throwing up an "OK/Cancel" dialog (which most users never read anyway): Context-sensitive shortcuts automatically fill-in the context based on the currently selected node. For example, if you want to run a query using the selected node as the root, you can just click that query in the Shortcuts tab. In this screenshot, clicking Model After would model the selected node: This is just for starters. There is much more to cover, on both the client and server. For example, all communication channels are now configurable (no more DCOM). You can pick the ports, the encoding (binary or XML), and the transport mechanism (TCP, TCP over SSL, or SOAP over HTTP). All the relevant WS-* standards are also supported, eg: WS-Security, etc. Plus new features (besides the web client and unicode support). • Set Firefox to Be On Top of Other Windows

  Sometimes you need to keep a close watch on a website and have Firefox remain in view regardless of the other apps running. See how you can keep Firefox in constant view with the Always on Top extension. Before If you have a webpage that you like to watch throughout the day but have a very busy desktop then Firefox can get lost in all of the clutter. Note: You can read about the ReloadEvery extension here. Even with a widescreen monitor sometimes there is just not enough room to keep everything in easy view while you are working on something. Always on Top in Action Once you have installed the extension you will notice that a new Toolbar Button has automatically been added to your Navigation Toolbar. At the moment this is the only on/off switch for the extension. Clicking on the Toolbar Button will enable Always on Top and the button will change to a blue color to indicate its’ active status. Click on it again to disable it. Do anything that you like in the other windows…Firefox will still be the topmost window and easy to view. Conclusion The Always on Top extension was made to do just one thing and it does it very well…keeping your Firefox window on top. Being able to turn it on or off without digging through a bunch of menus adds that extra level of convenience. • Nautilus crashes after Ubuntu Tweak Package Cleaner [fixed]

  Few days ago I started having some problems with nautilus. Basically when I'm trying to get into a folder it crashes. It's not happening all the time, but in 85% it does... Sometimes, after the crash all my desktop icons are also gone. The only thing that I think causes this is Ubuntu Tweak - I'm not sure, but the issues started after I did the Package cleaner from Ubuntu Tweaks... Any ideas? ------- EDIT 2 - IMPORTANT !!! ---------- It seems I fixed this problem doing these: 1) I uninstall this nautilus script - http://mundogeek.net/nautilus-scripts/#nautilus-send-gmail 2) I installed nautilus elementary So far is back to normal... If anything bad happens again I will come back! -------- EDIT 1 ---------- First time, after running the command (nautilus --quit; nautilus --no-desktop) 3 times all the system crashed (except the mouse, I could move the mouse). Armed with a mobile device – smartphone or tablet – folks will use them to research, compare, and ultimately purchase.  A recent PayPal survey found that 46% of respondents plan to use a mobile device this holiday season to make a purchase.   An astounding 27% of consumers in an e-tailing group survey commissioned by Oracle, use a tablet device daily or several times a week to research products and services. Beyond researching or making purchases, 35% of consumers use their smartphone to receive offers and coupons, and 32% access coupons and redeem them at their local retail store.  And with GPS capabilities in smartphones and tablet (and with user’s approval), retailers will start pushing coupons and offers directly to phone users based on their proximity to their store (or their competitors). Security is one concern that both shoppers, companies and phone manufacturers will have to deal with in the coming years.  In that same Oracle-sponsored e-tailing group consumer survey, 32% of consumers were concerned about giving their credit card information via a smartphone. You can gain further insight into the mind of today’s consumer by reading the e-tailing group white paper, titled “the connected consumer”.

• Html5 Input Validation Presentation

  Last week I gave a presentations to the 2011 UC Davis IT Security Symposium that covered input validation features in HTML5.  I mostly discussed the following three topics: New Html5 Input Types (like <input type=”email” />) Html5 Constraints (like <input type=”text” required maxlength=”8” />) Polyfills The slides only cover part of the story since there are a few “live demos.”  You can find all of the demo code on my github repository https://github.com/srkirkland/ITSecuritySymposium.  You’ll need ASP.NET Mvc 3 installed to run them. Regardless of what type of constituents you may be serving, content relevance is critical to support business goals like self-service, communication within a geographically distributed organization, lead generation and customer loyalty effectively. • Add a Search Box to the Drop-Down Tab List in Firefox

  Do you have a lot of tabs open no matter what time of day it is and find sorting through the tabs list frustrating? Then get control back with the List All Tabs Menu extension for Firefox. Before If you have a large number of tabs open using the “Tab List Menu” can start to become a little awkward. You can use your mouse’s middle button to scroll through the list or the tiny arrow button at the bottom but there needs to be a better way to deal with this. After Once you have installed the extension you will notice two differences in the “Tab List Menu”. There will be a search box available and a nice scrollbar for those really long lists. A closer look at the search box and scrollbar setup… Depending on your style you can use the scrollbar to look for a particular page or enter a search term and watch that list become extremely manageable. A closer look at our much shorter list after conducting a search. Definitely not hard to find what we were looking for at all. Conclusion If you are someone who has lots of tabs open at once throughout the day then the List All Tabs Menu extension might be the perfect tool to help you sort and manage those tabs.
