  This might be a bit weird question, but I'll give it a shot: HELP, my Visual Studio 2008 / ASP.NET is giving me GERMAN error messages. Besides the fact that translations tend to be not as good as the original text, I can't search for those and find relevant answers to my problems on the internet. So: How do I switch my German Visual Studio 2008 Standard Edition to English locals? Update - Just to make it clear: I am a German developer, working with a German Windows Vista... I also have a German version of Visual Studio, so it is not surprising, that everything is German. Is just don't want it that way... There must be a way to install english locals into my Visual Studio, though? Or uninstall german ones, so that default english is used?!? (BTW: Same thing for SQL Server Management Studio, too. F**k "Sichten". I want "Views". That's how you really call them. No one says "Sichten", not even here in Germany, and not even though it is translated correctly).

  What Java web framework out there best supports a role of "web UI designer", that is, lets you: Use popular web design tools (xhtml validators, css editors, what have you) on your views/pages View changes without running on a server Rapidly prototype different UI options Supports a (somewhatly) clean separation between "developer" and "designer" (terminology intentionally vague) We, like many others, have found these capabilities sorely lacking in our large, legacy Struts 1.x apps that use lots of JSP fragments and includes. We've decided to port our apps to a JSR-168/268 portal environment, but we have not decided on what Java web framework will power the portlets. We're open to any kind (action-based, component-based, etc) and a key criterion is how well it supports the role described above. I'm intrigued by Tapestry which claims that its views are XHTML compliant pages (that simply have extra Tapestry-specific attributes added onto them to be processed at runtime). This sounds like it would play well with a web ui designer's toolkit. However, I'd like to know if this is what actually happens in the real world, or if compromises are necessary. Of course, if there's something much better than Tapestry, I'd love to hear about it!

  Hello, I'm familiar with X86[-64] architecture & assembly. I want to start develop for an ARM processor. But unlike desktop processors, I don't have an actual ARM processor. I think I need an ARM simulator. http://www.armtutorial.com/ say An ARM assembly compiler will be required, the most accessible is the ARMulator. I thought of downloading Armulator but found from http://forums.arm.com/index.php?showtopic=13744 that Its not sold seperately. But you can download an eval of RVDS - which includes RVISS/ARMulator I've downloaded & installed RVDS but It looks very complex. I'm unable to figure out what do I need to do to write ARM assembly & run it. I want to write in assembly not in C/C++. I don't have an ARM processor. What is a good simulator? Can any one please mention in short. How to write assembly & assemble & simulate using RVDS. Please be clear? Are there any other alternative ways. I can't afford buying any kind of boards. I always learn from books rather than tutorials. I'm following these two books: ARM System Developer's Guide: Designing and Optimizing System Software (The Morgan Kaufmann Series in Computer Architecture and Design) ARM System-on-Chip Architecture (2nd Edition) Do you have any better suggestions?

I've been a software developer, architect, manager, vp, tester, trainer, tech writer, etc., and my presentation is primarily about Android & other mobile application development.) Next week I'm going to be giving a presentation to 3 groups of high schoolers interested in technology and technology careers. One of the things I've been asked to include is any advice that I think would be valuable for them. If you are willing to share, I would like to hear what advice you would give based on your life experiences and observations. What would you be looking for if they approached you about work? Perhaps you are in that age group right now. What do you want to know? Perhaps you are just a few years into the workforce. What do you wish someone had told you but never did? • Project with multiple binaries in Eclipse CDT

  I think it is quite normal to have more than one binary in a project. However, with Eclipse CDT I don't know how to set up the IDE to get things done. I know I can create several projects - one per binary. And I know I can set the dependencies per project. However, I cannot regard them as one project in Eclipse. If I'd like to share the code with a version control system (like svn), each developer has to import the projects separately. What I miss is something like the Solution (sln file) in Visual Studio. Should I create a single project and create the make files by myself? I haven't tried it out yet, but there is this 'project set' which can be ex- and imported. Is this the solution? Can this be put into version control? My goal it to put everything under version control, not only subprojects. I cannot imagine that CDT makes only sense for single-binary applications. How can I work properly?

My current development machine is a Macbook Pro and I would like to continue using it. Overall, I am considering the following recipe: Install VMWare Fusion or Parallels or VirtualBox for running the Windows OS Buy a version of Windows to develop on Buy Windows Developer tools Having been in the open source universe all this time, I am utterly unfamiliar with the options/packages in the Windows world. I could use some help on the following: Does the recipe above look fine, or do I need to change something? What is a good VM environment to buy/use? VirtualBox is free, but Parallels/VMWare promise Windows app that blend in with my Mac windows. Could use some help on this topic Does MSFT sell a package deal which has bare bones Windows 7 and the necessary dev tools, or do I need to buy the OS and dev tools separately?   I'm trying to use a standard Intent that will take a picture, then allow approval or retake. Then I want to save the picture into a file. Here's the Intent I am using: Intent intent = new Intent(android.provider.MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE ); startActivityForResult( intent, 22 ); The docs at http://developer.android.com/reference/android/provider/MediaStore.html#ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE say "The caller may pass an extra EXTRA_OUTPUT to control where this image will be written. If the EXTRA_OUTPUT is not present, then a small sized image is returned as a Bitmap object in the extra field. If the EXTRA_OUTPUT is present, then the full-sized image will be written to the Uri value of EXTRA_OUTPUT." I don't pass extra output, I hope to get a Bitmap object in the extra field of the Intent passed into onActivityResult() (for this request). So where/how do you extract it? Intent has a getExtras(), but that returns a Bundle, and Bundle wants a key string to give you something back. What do you invoke on the Intent to extract the bitmap?

  Hello, I've started to read the book "Code Craft" by Pete Goodliffe. The fourth chapter is about instruments that developer uses during his daily work; this chapter made me to review my work and I've seriously decided to make it easier with fully personalized IDE. Eclipse IDE is what I've started my learning from... I've read documentation and found that it's really easy to do tasks routine from Eclipse. We are using Mantis for tracking tasks and it was great surprise for me to find out Mantis Connector for Mylyn. Also I was pretty glad to see SVN client integrated into Eclipse IDE. Also I've found UML2 tool for Eclipse, but was disappointed because there is no any graphic interface for building diagramms. (Or, maybe, I'm was searching in wrong place?) What useful plugins do you use in your daily work? How do you use Eclipse for collaboration in your team? Do you have any links about intergration Eclipse IDE experience in dev. team? Thank you!

  I was reading this page and I found the following statement: MVC in Java Server Pages Now that we have a convenient architucture to separate the view, how can we leverage that? Java Server Pages (JSP) becomes more interesting because the HTML content can be separated from the Java business objects. JSP can also make use of Java Beans. The business logic could be placed inside Java Beans. If the design is architected correctly, a Web Designer could work with HTML on the JSP site without interfering with the Java developer. Interestingly in my textbook I pulled the following quote: In the MVC architecture... the original request is always handled by a servlet. The servlet invokes the business logic and data access code and creates beans to represent the results (that’s the model). Then, the servlet decides which Java Server Page is appropriate to present those particular results and forwards the request there (the JSP is the view). The servlet decides what business logic code applies and which JSP should present the results (the servlet is the controller). The two statements seem slightly contradicting. What is the best way to use beans: should we place business logic in them or should we only place results in them? Are there ways in which beans are inadequate for representing a model?

  Yes, from searching I can see this has been asked time and time again. Here's a backstory. I'm an individual hobbyist developer with zero budget. A program I've been developing has been in need of constant bugfixes, and me and users are getting tired of having to manually update. Me, because my current solution of Manually FTP to my website Update a file "newest.txt" with the newest version Update index.html with a link to the newest version Hope for people to see the "there's an update" message Have them manually download the update sucks, and whenever I screw up an update, I get pitchforks. Users, because, well, "Are you ever going to implement auto-update?" "Will there ever be an auto-update feature?" Over the past I have looked into: WinSparkle - No in-app updates, and the DLL is 500 KB. My current solution is a few KBs in the executable and has no in-app updates. http://windowsclient.net/articles/appupdater.aspx - I can't comprehend the documentation http://www.codeproject.com/KB/vb/Auto_Update_Revisited.aspx - Doesn't appear to support anything other than working with files that aren't in use wyUpdate - wyBuild isn't free, and the file specification is simply too complex. Maybe if I was under a company paying me I could spend the time, but then I may as well pay for wyBuild. http://www.kineticjump.com/update/default.aspx - Ditto the last sentence. ClickOnce - Workarounds for implementing launching on startup are massive, horrendous and not worth it for such a simple feature. And then I think about Sparkle... EDIT: I came across SparkleDotNET just then. Looks good, though the DLL is 200 KB. Don't know if that's really that big of an issue, though.

  Is there a good guide or tutorial for people who need to programmatically interact with dynamic websites? There's been a rash of Perl questions about that lately, and I haven't found a good resource to point people toward. I'm asking not because I need one but because I don't want to waste my time writing it if it already exists. Although I'm most interested in Perl, the extra tools and techniques are mostly the same. Typically, I see see these problems in people's questions: Handling, setting, and saving cookies Finding and interacting with forms Handling JavaScript inside your user-agent especially things like onLoad, onSumbit, and Ajax Using HTTP sniffer tools Using Web developer plugins in interactive browsers Interacting with DOM, screen scraping, etc. If there's no good tutorial, I'll add it to my list of things to do (unless someone else wants to do it :). Along the way, if you don't have a suggestion for an existing tutorial, please suggest the things that you think should be in a new one, including links, your favorite tools, and your own user-agent development experiences. I don't care about the particular language you use.

  Hello community! I am a as3 developer, I am used to use handlers everytime I launch an event and I am wondering which is the best way / practice to do that in Objective C. Let's say I want to call a diferent services from my backend. The problem is I already created the protocols and delegates, but how can I separate each response from the server? My first idea is that maybe I should return the name of the service method in the delegate call to identify each service. Maybe I should create a UID for each service and pass it the same way... Any idea?

• Ability to draw and record a signature as part of a form - iphone

  Apolgies in advance for any errors.. new to this and am not a developer/programmer.. just have some basic unix experience. I have searched the web and struggled to find a solution to my problem when I stumbled onto this website which maybe suggested that there is a solution to my question. For work i use a windows mobile device because we have to get customers to sign and form after a customer visit. the signature being very important. On the windows device i use the notes application and am able to record details and obtain/record (using draw) a customer signature. the form is then emailed back to HQ. The format being used is a *.pwi I have downloaded and paid for several applications for my iphone which is my preferred device and cant quite find anything that does both. the critical bit here is to be able to take a signature on the phone, save the doc in a format such as .txt, .doc or .pdf where i can control the file name then be able to email back to HQ. Am i asking too much? I hope that makes sense.. Any help would be much appreciated many thanks in advance

When the interent and html was new, one could find examples of how to build a website on a few trusted web sites. The same web sites might not be the best choice for looking for examples for Silverlight, I guess. What are the best web sites where you can look at examples -- and most importantly -- look at the source code of some examples of Silverlight? Back when MFC existed as a option that programmers might use to develop windows applications, a coder could look at a huge list of sample code and step through that code to find something that somewhat did what he was looking for and use that example code to build his own app. Is there anything like that for Silverlight? Now, the script works fine and the output is generated correctly. The only problem I counter is with two WebApp projects in the solution that use the AJAX Control Toolkit. The toolkit has a set of folders (e.g. ar, it, es, fr) that contain localized resources. These folders are not copied in the bin directory of the WebApps when the solution is built in MSBuild, but they are copied when it is built in Visual Studio. How can I solve this in a clean manner? I know I could write a (quite convoluted) task that copies the directories after the compile, but it does not seem the right solution to me. Also, neither Google, SO and MSDN could provide more details on this kind of issue.

• Detecting Xml namespace fast

  Hello there, This may be a very trivial problem I'm trying to solve, but I'm sure there's a better way of doing it. So please go easy on me. I have a bunch of XSD files that are internal to our application, we have about 20-30 Xml files that implement datasets based off those XSDs. Some Xml files are small (<100Kb), others are about 3-4Mb with a few being over 10Mb. I need to find a way of working out what namespace these Xml files are in order to provide (something like) intellisense based off the XSD. The implementation of this is not an issue - another developer has written the code for this. But I'm not sure the best (and fastest!) way of detecting the namespace is without the use of XmlDocument (which does a full parse). I'm using C# 3.5 and the documents come through as a Stream (some are remote files). All the files are *.xml (I can detect if it was extension based) but unfortunately the Xml namespace is the only way. Right now I've tried XmlDocument but I've found it to be innefficient and slow as the larger documents are awaiting to be parsed (even the 100Kb docs). public string GetNamespaceForDocument(Stream document); Something like the above is my method signature - overloads include string for "content". Would a RegEx (compiled) pattern be good? How does Visual Studio manage this so efficiently? Another college has told me to find a fast Xml parser in C/C++, parse the content and have a stub that gives back the namespace as its slower in .NET, is this a good idea?

Re:model changes, it's ok to ask the developer when they try to change it or have a set of sensible defaults. Here is the challenge: The above code should work with very little modification or thinking required. Why must we put up with compromise when we know better? It's 2010, we should be able to code scalable, simple databases in our sleep. If you think this is important, please upvote!

• Not all TFS Build type files are getting copied

  Because I have several builds sharing some assemblies containing common build tasks, I have one TFSBuild.proj for all builds and import different targets depending on the build, like the following: <Project DefaultTargets="DesktopBuild" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003" ToolsVersion="3.5"> <Import Project="Build_1.targets" Condition="'$(BuildDefinition)'=='Build_1'" /> <Import Project="Build_2.targets" Condition="'$(BuildDefinition)'=='Build_2'" /> <Import Project="Build_3.targets" Condition="'$(BuildDefinition)'=='Build_3'" /> </Project> Each target for a particular build has your usual content for a build type file, but in my case, I also reference some tasks inside assemblies checked into the same folder as TFSBuild.proj in source control. I wanted to add folders to contain some test build targets, since my folder was getting a bit full and cluttered. The following illustrates what I mean. $(TFS project)\build\ TFSBuild.proj Build_1.targets ... Assembly1.dll Assembly2.dll ... Folder\ Test_target_1.targets .... When I stated my build, however, I found that Test_target_1.targets and other files in Folder were not being copied to the build directory, while TFSBuild.proj and other files in the root level, as it were, of the build type folder were being copied. This caused my test build to not be able to reference files inside Folder, causing my build to immediately fail. I realize the simplest work-around would be to get rid of Folder and move all of its contents up to the build folder, but I would really like to have Folder if at all possible. Thanks for your help in advance.

• Snow Leopard & LSUIElement -> application not activating properly, window not "active" despite being

  Hi, I'm running into a few problem with a background application that uses LSUIElement=1 to hide its dock item, menu bar and prevent it from appearing in the Command-Tab application switcher. It seems to be a Snow Leopard only problem. The application places an NSStatusItem in the menu bar and pops up a menu when clicked on. Selecting "Preferences..." should bring up an NSWindow with the preferences. The first thing that doesn't seem to work is that the Window does not get ordered in at the front, but appears behind all other application windows. I tried to fix this by calling [[NSApplication sharedApplication] activateIgnoringOtherApps: YES] but that didn't work. After a while I figured out that the menu is blocking the message to the run loop from being sent, so I wrote another method on the MainController and sent the message with a delay: [self performSelector:@selector(setFront:) withObject: [preferencesController window] afterDelay:1.0]; -(void)setFront: (id) theWindow { [[NSApplication sharedApplication]activateIgnoringOtherApps:YES]; [theWindow orderFrontRegardless]; [theWindow makeKeyWindow]; [[NSApplication sharedApplication] activateIgnoringOtherApps:YES]; } Note the send-every-possible-message-to-make-it-do-what-it-should-be-doing-approach. This works, kind-of, the window is brought to the front on top of all other windows from all apps, BUT most of the time it isn't active, meaning it's title bar is greyed out. Clicking on the title bar won't make the window active either. Clicking INSIDE of the window will make it active!? This all didn't seem to be a problem in Leopard; just calling activateIgnoringOtherApps and making the window key seemed to work just fine. In Snow Leopard there is a new API designed to replace LSUIElement that is supposed to emulate its behaviour: http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/releasenotes/cocoa/appkit.html I've played around with that, but it's SL-only and I haven't been able to get LSUIElement being set. • Best way to "un-promote" files in Accurev?

  My company uses Accurev for source control, and for all its benefits, there's one simple action that I just can't figure out how to accomplish. Often we have someone accidentally push a file up too far in our stream structure -- from the "Development" stream to the "Release" stream, for example. What is the best way to "un-promote" this file? That is to say, to get the old version of the file back into the "Release" stream, and keep the new version of the file in the "Development" stream, where it belongs? Just doing a "Revert to Backed" or other Revert action on the file in the Release stream will either cause an old version of the file to propagate down into Development, or will make the file disappear entirely. In the above case, the developer will have to jump through hoops with setting basis times on streams, or use the command line tool to do a checkout of an old transaction, to get the file back. Sometimes the people in question are non-technical, so this is not a good solution. I have also considered moving the files to a "higher ground" stream, reverting, and then cross-promoting them to the lower stream again. This seems really kludgy. It seems like Accurev is obscure enough that Google is no help, so I turn to the good folks of StackOverflow for help -- has anybody figured out the "Accurevy" way to accomplish this?

• Open Source CMS (.Net vs Java)

  I must say up-front that this is not a strictly programming-related question and a very opinionated one. I am the lead developer of the dominant .Net CMS in my country and I don't like my own product :). Managerial decisions over what is important or not and large chunks of legacy code done before I joined gives me headache every day I go for work. Anyway, having a vast amount of experience in web industry and a very good grasp of C# and programming practices I'm designing my own CMS the past few months. Now the problem is that I'm an open source kinda guy so I have a dilemma. Should I use C# and .Net which has crippled multi-platform support or should I drop .Net entirely and start learning Java where I can create a truly open-source and cross-platform CMS? Please don't answer that I should contribute to an existing open source CMS. I ruled that out after spending a great deal of time searching for something similar in structure to what I have in mind. I am not a native speaker, so feel free to correct my syntax or rephrase my question.

• Looking for Hardware that will easily interface with my .NET code.

  I'm a .NET C# developer looking to do some hardware interfacing/programming. I just want something super simple to mess around with. I have done one of those basic stamp projects, but I want something with less electrical work. A self-contained piece of hardware would be fine. I'm not really looking to do embedded programming... but that would actually be pretty cool if something was capable of running .net code. I'm looking for something that would be easy to connect, hopefully via USB. Serial ports seems to be more hit or miss nowadays with laptops and netbooks. Something I can easily send data to, like a mini LCD, or series of LED's. Better yet would be something that provides feedback, like a temperature sensor. The best would be something more featured that I could talk to. I would be able to send data to it, and it would send back responses. Maybe something like a servo that could report it's position? Or maybe something that I could set parameters on? Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
