  • What is the point/purpose of Ruby EventMachine, Python Twisted, or JavaScript Node.js?

    I don't understand what problem these frameworks solve. Are they replacements for a HTTP server like Apache HTTPD, Tomcat, Mongrel, etc? Or are they more? Why might I use them... some real world examples? I've seen endless examples of chat rooms and broadcast services, but don't see how this is any different than, for instance, setting up a Java program to open sockets and dispatch a thread for each request. I think I understand the non-blocking I/O, but I don't understand how that is any different than a multi-threaded web server.

  • Samba + Centos (Share not working)

    I've done this a few times already, but for some reason this time it's not working. I have a folder called ruby (root:root - 0777) on /home/placona I'm trying to see this folder from my WindowsXP box, but keep getting permission denied. I can see the global share though, but whenever I try clicking on the ruby share, it won't let me in. Here's my smb.conf settings: [global] log file = /var/log/samba/samba.%m guest account = nobody netbios name = DEVBOX server string = DEVBOX CENTOS workgroup = WORKGROUP encrypt passwords = yes security = share max log size = 50 [ruby] path = /home/placona/ruby I want to be able to open this folder without using password (hence the guest account = nobody). I tried even with password, but never seems to work. Can anyone spot anything wrong with my settings?

  • Is there a Java equivalent for Ruby on Rails "url_for"?

    I have written something like this pretty easily in C# (string GetUrl(new { controller = "foo", action = "bar", baz = "fnord" }), based on the existing capabilities of the XmlRouteCollection class provided by the ASP.NET MVC framework (why it isn't there out of the box is beyond me; the additional required code was trivial). I am now faced with a JSP project, and I need the same ability: centralize the logic for generating all URLs in one place, based on a list of routing rules. Is there some code somewhere I could reuse/adapt to do this in Java? It seems like a common enough requirement, but google proved surprisingly unhelpful in finding something like this.

I just hate spending hours figuring out how to get 5 pixels to show on every browser, and getting fonts to look like a PSD counterpart. So a question (or two) for programmers out there.   • How to use rvm (ruby version manager) with root account?

    The whole point of rvm is to be able to install multiple rubies and access them from a user account. What do you do when you need to access any of those rubies from root? Or use gems installed in one of those rvms? Is there an elegant (or even hackish) way to use these I haven't considered? My guess is that I should just add it to my PATH, but I'm curious if anyone has come up with a better idea. I'd rather not install rvm just for the root account and duplicate everything.

    I have a method which goes through each day of the week: def dates_week(d, delim) "<tr>" + (d.beginning_of_week...(d.beginning_of_week+5)).map do |day| "<#{delim}> #{yield(day)} </#{delim}>" end.join + "</tr>" end For each day of the week, I plug that as an arg into a method (or maybe a named_scope, haven't figured out which), that will then output the .count for :all the emails that have a :date_sent on that date. However, :date_sent is a date-timestamp, so I can't use == as I have below. def sent_emails_by_date(date) ContactEmail.find(:all, :conditions => "date_sent = '#{date}'" " ).count end How do I find all the emails that fall on the day for the date passed through from the method which loops through a week as shown above?

There are several parts that did not seem to fit the language. This time around I didn’t bother with a testing framework, I just append some values to the page with jQuery.   • Advice on selecting programming languages to concentrate on? (2nd year IT security student)

    I'm in the process of considering which programming languages I should devote the majority of my coding studies to. I'm a 2nd year CS student, majoring in IT security. What I want to do/work with: Intelligence gathering Relational databases Virus design Snort network IPS Current coding experience (what I'm going to keep): Java - intermediate HTML5 - intermediate SQL (MySQL, Oracle 11g) - basic BASH - basic I'm going to need to learn (at least) one of the following languages in order to be successful in my field. Languages to add (at least 1): Ruby (+Metasploit) C++ (virus design, low-level driver interaction, computationally intensive applications) Python (import ALL the things) My dilemma: If I diversify too broadly, I won't be able to focus on, and improve in a specific niche. Does anyone have any advice as to how I should select a language? What I'm considering + why I'm leaning towards Ruby because of Metasploit support, despite lower efficiency when compared to Python. Any suggestions based on real-world experience? Should I focus on Ruby, Python, or C++? Both Ruby, and Python have been regarded as syntactically similar to Java which my degree is based around. I'm going to be studying C++ in two years as a component of my malicious code class. Thanks, Tyler

  • DNS - domain conflict?

    I was given two domains: domain.com & domain.info (they are on GoDaddy). And I was also given two servers, 107.105.38.99 - Rails app and 107.107.90.17 - Wordpress platform, on Digital Ocean. At first, I was instructed to associate domain.com with the 107.107.38.99 (Rails app). Then I was instructed to de-associate this IP with domain.com and associated the 107.107.90.17 with the domain name domain.com. Then I was instructed to associated domain.info with the 107.107.38.99 (Rails app). Right now, when I go to domain.com the WordPress platform (107.107.90.17) loads fine and that is what is expected. But when I go to domain.info for the Rails app (107.107.38.99) I get redirected to domain.com. This is not expected and this is really weird for me. When I ping domain.info I get this: PING domain.info (107.107.38.99): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 107.107.38.99: icmp_seq=0 ttl=50 time=74.601 ms Which is the expected result showing the correct IP but I don't understand why I get redirected to domain.com...(which when I ping is:) domain 64 bytes from 107.107.90.17: icmp_seq=0 ttl=50 time=75.057 ms The PTR Records on Digital Ocean are as follows: IP Address PTR Record 107.107.38.99 domain.info. 107.107.90.17 domain.com. and the DNS configurations on Digital Ocean are: domain.com A: @ 107.107.90.17 CNAME: * @ domain.info A: @ 107.107.38.99 CNAME: * @ I am not sure what the issue is, if you have any clue please let me know, I will be really grateful.   • Koans, now available in Python flavor

    Recently a Python developer friend with whom I was pair programming with suggested that I show him how to write a little Ruby. I responded by telling him to check out Ruby Koans as a starting point. However I wanted to try that in reverse at the same time with me learning some Python. I did a bit of googling, and sure enough someone had started writing some Python Koans. It just needed finishing... So, a few weeks later Python Koans is now complete and ready for action! It is available through Mercurial on Bitbucket: http://bitbucket.org/gregmalcolm/python_koans/wiki/Home It is also mirrored on Github: http://wiki.github.com/gregmalcolm/python_koans/ Converting it was fairly easy. Aside from the differing philosophical approaches behind the two languages, Ruby and Python are fairly similar. We had to come up with completely new material for a few subjects like multiple inheritance and decorators, but for most features in Ruby there is something roughly comparable in Python. I highly recommend writing tests (or koans) as a means to lean a new language or framework. I've learned a lot from doing this.

    Hello, I just installed MOSS 2007 and configure it on a machine. The machine is not in a domain. When I try to create a new document in my document library (Server is on a remote location and my laptop is not a part of the domain), MS Word 2007 opens, asks me for login credentials 3 times and then disappears leaving me with a new blank word document. Is there any way to enable remote access of MOSS 2007 documents? Thanks :)
