• New Windows 7 Install Crashing

  One big reboot crash and one smaller crash already, 15 minutes in. Did a basic install of Windows 7, installed Chrome and Firefox. I had just finished loading up my gmail account in Chrome/Firefox to show the speed difference and we'd thought it would be hilarious to see how slow IE8 was. :P Just about as IE8 was done opening, the computer's screen goes black. After a restart and a couple minutes, Explorer crashes as well. What is going on? This install is only 15-20 minutes old. :P

• "Press Tab to search <site>" in Chrome not working

  The problem After partially entering a URL like meta.st, Chrome adds in the rest of the URL slected in blue and says "Press Tab to search Meta Stack Overflow". But on pressing, it just moves the cursor to the next item like in a normal text-field. Other info I'm on Windows 7 Home Basic. My Chrome version number is 22.0.1229.52 beta-m (beta channel). This was working before. What I've tried I've reported it in Chrome (by going to Options Tools Report an issue...). I've also tried deleting all my custom search engines (they might've been interfering) and also tried creating a new profile. I also googled, but to no avail. How do I fix this? Thanks.

• NATing with a single-homed machine possible?

  I have the following setup: a) a single-homed machine, A, that can see the Internet. b) other machines B, C, and D that cannot see the Internet. c) A, B, C, and D can see each other. d) all machines are running either RHEL 5.3 or Fedora 16. Question: Is it possible to have B, C, and D share the Internet connection with A somehow? Note, again, that machine A does not have a second NIC installed. (The solutions that I am finding on the Net assume A to be a dual-homed system!) Also, could you please recommend a set of book(s) or online resources for a current and in-depth coverage of iptables for people with only a basic knowledge of TCP/IP?

• Dell PowerEdge 2950 III running XenServer with 2 VMs gets sluggish after a week and needs rebooted?

  It has weird hangs and then random CPU spikes that do a ton at once. While remoted into the VMs I get an update all at once then it hangs for another 20 seconds. When it lets it go through I get a CPU spike. Basic server specs for the HW node is: 8 CPUs, 16GB ram 1TB HDD total iPERC6 raid 10 The VMs are barely used but I have them spec'd at VM 1: 4 CPUs, 4GB Ram VM2: 4 CPUs 6GB ram The HW node currently says it's total CPU usage is 11% AND Used Memory is at 63%out of 16GB I'm new to this stuff so I'm not sure. I just recently installed this and set it all up. Please advise if you can!

  After a basic, successful installation of Oracle 11g, I ran dbca again to enable Enterprise Manager on my database. The operation hung at around 67% for half an hour or more, so I clicked Stop to abort the operation. Things seemed to wrap up cleanly, EM was working, all was well with the world. Then I started getting this dreaded error upon any attempt to connect in SQL*Plus: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified I thought perhaps the database had been corrupted due to the earlier aborted operation, so I ran dbca again and deleted the database. Then I attempted to create a new database in its stead, using a clone of the template created the first time around. Unfortunately, the clone database operation fails at 50% with the exact same error: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified How can I clean up the mess I have created, short of reinstalling Oracle entirely from scratch?

• grep only returns help text

  Well, I am perplexed. I am working with an Ubuntu server and I type in grep 'bash' *.sh BUT fgrep 'bash' *.sh works like a champ. which grep and which fgrep both point to their respective executables in /bin. I am perplexed as to what I am doing wrong. EXAMPLE output: $ grep -F 'grounding' repl.clj Usage: grep [OPTION]... PATTERN [FILE]... Search for PATTERN in each FILE or standard input. PATTERN is, by default, a basic regular expression (BRE). Example: grep -i 'hello world' menu.h main.c $ fgrep 'grounding' repl.clj (p/concepts-for-grounding-term imp1 "PERSON" "summary") See? grep is failing but fgrep is working fine. That is why I am perplexed.

• PHP 5.4.7 and Apache 2.2 Trouble under Windows XP

  I'm trying to setup a test enviroment on a virtual machine running Windows XP Home (totally updated), with Apache 2.2 and PHP 5.4.7. I can load the PHP 5 module inside httpd.conf and if I don't rename php.ini-DEVELOPMENT (or -PRODUCTION) file to php.ini, the engine works fine. This basic configuration doesn't have MySQL module loaded, so I have to rename rename the .ini-DEVELOPMENT into .ini and edit as follows: ; Directory in which the loadable extensions (modules) reside. ; http://php.net/extension-dir ; extension_dir = "./" ; On windows: extension_dir = "C:/php/ext/" ... extension=php_mysql.dll extension=php_mysqli.dll Restart Apache with no problems and... all I can get is a blank page. Where can I see some error or do you know where is the trouble? Tell me if I need to post something else to give you more details.

• Root access amazon ec2

  Hey guys, I am very new to linux, and amazon-ec2. I wanted to put a quick server. For some reason, when I sign in with my key pair, it prompts me for a username, I input ec2-user, and I'm in. The problem is that I don't have root access (and can't find the root password). I need to install screen to run the server in the background, and also create a new user, that doesn't have root, to run the server. Neither of which I can do without root.. Any help? • Best window manager for Linux for Virtual Desktop / Multimon

  Previous used Ubuntu Gnome with Compiz but for my basic spec intel macbook (4 years old) its a little too heavyweight. So for now Im back on my macbook with os x, but now considering going back to Linux. Im looking for a window manager that has the following properties: 1) Supports virtual desktop (need 4 minimum) 2) Works well with multi monitors - can move an app with shortcut from one monitor to the other (on same virtual desktop) 3) Can remember window position (i.e. open vim on 2 monitor) - however must coerce everything back to first window when 2nd screen is unplugged 4) Keyboard shortcut friendly 5) Not too hard to install 6) Works well with minimum hardware such as integrated graphics Please suggest and share your experiences

• Can there be multiple monitors with these video cards and setup

  I have a Acer Aspire TimelineX 4830TG-6808 laptop running windows 7 Ultimate with one VGA port and one HDMI port. It has one Intel HD Graphics family card and one NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M. Right now I have one monitor running via the VGA port, and also the basic laptop monitor. When I look at the monitor setup, I see one unused video card available. Can I have another monitor via the HDMI port? If I cannot run three monitors, is there some way I could make a large "single" desktop that extends over two monitors? For the sake of celerity, maybe something like having a virtual machine window that extends over two monitors. Could this maybe come from third party software?

• Using Postgres on Volusion site

  Okay, I apologize if this is so basic that I should know the answer, but I'm not sure where else to go for the solution. I would like to start a small store site using Volusion. I would like some custom ASP code to query data that I currently have in a Postgres database. I would like to be able to just move the database file(s) onto the Volusion server via ftp and access them from my store site (via the custom ASP). Do I need to install Postgres onto the server to do this, or can I just ftp my database file(s) and access them with the ASP code? I think I need to install Postgres, but would like to do this without such an installation if possible.

• Windows Vista Home memory usage problem

  Hi, I have a Windows Vista Home laptop from a client that is running on 1GB ram. The laptop is used for super basic things, word, internet, outlook, etc. What makes zero sense is that the RAM is being completely consumed, causing the PC to hang sometimes when it can't take it anymore. However, in task manager, the processes appear to only be consuming maybe 100MB (Private Working Set). The client literally has a simple setup, and is running kaspersky, though that does not seem to be indicating it is the cause of the excessive memory usage. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to resolve the memory issue or how to track down what is actually happening and fix it? G

• Using iptables to block ALL outgoing traffic from one NIC?

  Hi, I must pretty bad at Googling as this seems like a very basic question but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere... and man iptables is a very long read! I have two NICs - eth0 and eth1 - on a linux box and I want to block ALL outbound traffic (TCP and UDP across all ports) from one of the NICs, so that no traffic makes its way back up to the router. What is the command for this? I have only seen examples with specific ports. Thanks in advance.

• Access device with local ip over internet

  I apologize up front if this is the wrong place to post this question. It seemed like the best fit. I have a device which is connected to my local network which has an IP of 192.168.1.10 from my router. Additionally I use a Windows 7 machine that runs some software called DirectUpdate which allows me to resolve the local IP of the Windows 7 machine (192.168.1.5) to be accessible to the internet via my domain (example.com) - Basic dynamic DNS updating. I'd like to access the device from example.com. I am unsure how to do this as I don't have any way to install DirectUpdate (or any software) on the device to make the device available to the internet. Any insight here would be appreciated. • 'DNS service isn't responding' in windows 7

  Hi All, I bought a brand new Dell Studio 1558 just last week. It has windows 7 home premium 64-bit installed on it. My friend who is occupying the adjacent room has a laptop with windows XP. Both of us are connecting to the same wireless router of the hotel. My friend is able to connect to the wireless network without any trouble, but when I try to connect, I get the error "DNS service isn't responding". I met two more people in the same hotel with win XP laptop and they too dont have any problem. I have gone to possibly all the forums and website but I haven't been able to fix this error :(. I have done all the basic troubleshooting but I have no luck yet. Pls help.   My ever-growing interest in computers is making me ask deeper questions, that we don't seem to have to ask anymore. Our computers, at boot, as far as I understand it, are in text mode, in which a character can be displayed using the software interrupt 0x10 when AH=0x0e. We've all seen the famous booting font that always looks the same, regardless of what computer is booting. So, how on earth do computers output graphics at the lowest level, say, below the OS? And also, surely graphics aren't outputted a pixel at a time using software interrupts, as that sounds very slow? Is there a standard that defines basic outputting of vertices, polygons, fonts, etc. (below OpenGL for example, which OpenGL might use)? What makes me ask is why OS' can often be fine without official drivers installed; how do they do that? Apologies if my assumptions are incorrect. I would be very grateful for elaboration on these topics!

• Macrium Reflect Server v5 for Server Cloning?

  I'm starting to have clients with basic windows server setups. They have data backups, but no real strategy for system backups. I've been looking at cloning software which with linux or images seems easy enough (aside from DC complications, and other things I'm going to ignore until I learn more). What do people do when you have a non-disk hardware failure? I"ve been looking at server migration backup solutions and this one seems to be the cheapest. Anyone tried this? What more do I need to do to safeguard server setups? The hardware on these systems is a little out of date with Server 2003 setup at both businesses. Thanks!

• Latest XP Drivers for Intel Integrated Graphics

  On the Intel site I'm struggling to find what the latest driver version is for certain chipsets. From a system info tool I have several PCs (laptops) with the following reported graphics: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family Intel(R) Q35 Express Chipset Family Intel(R) Q45/Q43 Express Chipset All use the same driver igxprd32.dll at version 6.14.0010.4xxx (last 3 digits vary). All PCs are XP 32 bit. I am not certain but I think these are all using the same basic chipset. More than likely the drivers were never updated so I wondered what version might be relevant. Any help on tracking down the latest driver version (I just need the number, so I can see how out of date they are) and figuring out which chips these cards are would be great.

• How Do I Delete Misnamed Tagged Directory Already Committed?

  I'm new to using the SVN system and having hard time figuring out how to delete files uploaded mistakenly. What I've done: Committed the trunk folder with right clicking on "SVN Commit" Right clicked and choose "TortoiseSVN" - "Branch/Tag" In the section of "To path:" in the "Branch/Tag - Tortoise" window, I typed /*mydirectory*/tags/*1.0.11* where 1.0.11 was supposed to be 1.0.1.1 After realizing 1.0.11 was a mistake, to remove the directory, I right clicked on the 1.0.11 folder in Windows and selected "TortoiseSVN" - "Delete" It deleted the folder in Windows but does not delete the folder in the remote server. According to this page,http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2092344/how-do-i-delete-a-wrongly-tagged-directory-in-svn, a command can be used and I tried to type svn in the command prompt window but it gives svn is not recognized as an internal or external command. This should be a very basic question but I could not find relevant pages. Some pages suggest to use revert but I've already committed 1.0.1.1 so I'm afraid doing revert causes the newest one to be deleted. Thanks for your information.

• Auto backup a user folder to a usb when usb is plugged in

  I'm a computer technician and help customers everyday with their computers and smartphones and have a really basic (i think) request but dont know how to go about it. Customer always come in with broken phones, water damage, needing updates, or just want me to backup their information. I currently have a program that i use when i backup their computers it backups their iOS folder C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup but what i want is a quick easy way to do this in customers houses. What i require is a way when i plug in a USB drive it AUTOMATICALLY searches for the folder and starts transferring the folder to a predefined folder on the USB drive. This was I can just plug it in and begin work on their computer or phone without the risk of losing their information. I'm sure there is a .bat/.ini file i could use but wondering if someone has already done this or something similar as I would need it to search all the USER folders not just the one I'm logged into. • Hyper V cluster - one VM won't migrate

  We have a Failover Cluster built up on 6 blades, each running Hyper V. Each box is running Server 2008 R2. We've got a number of VMs running that all have the same basic config: VHD stored on a cluster shared volume. 2 virtual NICs (1 for LAN connection and 1 for SAN connection). All of our VMs will happily migrate between any other blade apart from one single VM which is running fine on it's current blade but will not migrate to any other location. What could be the cause of it or where should I look to get a detailed error message as I can't seem to find much information logged in any of the logs. Edit: I know the usual culprit is mis-matching resource names. We've already been there with the NICs named differently on some of the blades. As far as we can tell now everything looks to be identical on each bit of metal.

  With htaccess I'm trying to make my sites urls clean. I use very basic urls like: www.mysite.com/pagename.php ("pagename" is variable). I want www.mysite.com/pagename to display the content of /pagename.php So this is in my htaccess-file now: Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^([^\.]+)$ $1.php [NC,L] But I also want my old urls (/pagename.php), when called, to be rewritten to www.mysite.com/pagename How to do this? • Organize code in Chef: libraries, classes and resources

  I am new to both Chef and Ruby and I am implementing some scripts to learn them. Now I am facing the problem of how to organize my code: I have created a class in the library directory and I have used a custom namespace to maintain order. This is a simplified example of my file: # ~/chef-repo/cookbooks/mytest/libraries/MyTools.rb module Chef::Recipe::EP class MyTools def self.print_something( text ) puts "This is my text: #{text}" end def self.copy_file( dir, file ) cookbook_file "#{dir}/#{file}" do source "#{dir}/#{file}" end end end end From my recipe I call both methods: # ~/chef-repo/cookbooks/mytest/recipes/default.rb EP::MyTools.print_something "Hello World!" EP::MyTools.copy_file "/etc", "passwd" print_something works fine, but with copy_file I get this error: undefined method `cookbook_file' for Chef::Recipe::EP::FileTools:Class It's clear to me that I don't know how to create libraries in Chef or I don't know some basic assumptions. Can anyone help me, please? I am looking for a solution of this problem (organize my code, libraries, use resources in classes) or, better, a good Chef documentation as I find the documentation very deficient in clarity and disorganized so that research through it is a pain.
