• How to find (or generate) thousands of company names for test/demo purposes

  Ok, so this is rightfully a testing question more than a development question, but the two should go hand in hand :) So, I've got a system I'm building which includes business contact information. Pretty common no doubt. My test/demo database currently has randomly generated individual's names loaded (thanks to a handy IRS spreadsheet I found). This has worked great for internal testing and review purposes, but it looks really odd when shown to prospective customers. So.... Does anyone know where I can grab or find a listing of thousands of business names (address information too would be nice)? I've tried various online public information sources (e.g. EDGAR, and county based property records searches), but these all require me to manually stitch together the results in blocks of 50 names or so at a time. I could do this, but was really hoping for a search service or data store out there that had this type of information readily searchable and retrievable in very large batches. Thanks!

  Hello, my name is Tabetha and I have a question... I am a web designer, but I always find that while designing the layout and coding the design I come up with great ideas for websites. I would like to know where I need to start in order to learn back-end programming not only for the knowledge, but also for the challenge of it. I have searched online but can't seem to find the information I am looking for. If anyone can give me a simple, straight-forward "this is what language you need to learn" answer, or perhaps guide me in the right direction I would appreciate it ten-fold. • Selling an application both in the android market and outside it

  I understand it is possible to sell the same application both in the market and outside it, great. I still don't understand a few things, that AFAIK are not mentioned in the contract but I might have missed or misunderstood something, so I'm going to ask. Disclaimer: I know you're not a lawyer, etc. etc. Let's say I give in the market a demo version, and I sell in the market the full version too. May I also sell the full version outside the market? I understand that you can't give away the demo in the market and then collect the payment outside, but what if I do allow the user to buy it in the market, but also allow him to buy outside the market? What if I charge a lower price if he buys outside the market?

• Suggestion To Stackoverflow [closed]

  Hello Stackoverflow Team, This is just a suggestion to you. In the first place i must say that you guys are doing a great job. I suggest that you build into the forum system a mail notifier(to notify users whenever there is a move/deletion of a post with the reason of the move/deletion) so that whenever you move or removed someone's post then he can be notified about the move, so that we don't spend time looking for posts that are removed. I think by so doing the number of duplicate posts and mistakes from users can be minimized. The reason is i spent hours searching through the posts to locate my posts that you have re/moved. That is why i was a little bit upset. Sorry if here is the wrong place to post my suggestion. Point me to the right place. Thanks for your work.

  I've read a lot of comments mention in passing that the BlackBerry threading model deviates from the Java standard and can cause issues, but no amount of googling has enlightened me on what this means exactly. I've been developing a fairly large business application for the BlackBerry and, although I don't really have any previous experience with Java multi-threaded applications, haven't come across any issue that we've been able to blame on threading, other than what we caused ourselves. Can someone describe exactly how the BlackBerry threading model is different, and how I as a developer should take that into account? Obviously any links on the topic would also be great.

• Generate all the ways to intersperse a list of lists, keeping each list in order.

  Given a list of lists like this [[1,2,3],[a,b,c,d],[x,y]] generate all permutations of the flattened list, [1,2,3,a,b,c,d,x,y], such that the elements of each sublist occur in the same order. For example, this one is okay [a,1,b,2,x,y,3,c,d] but this one is not [y,1,2,3,a,b,c,x,d] because y must occur after x, that being how x and y are ordered in the original sublist. I believe the number of such lists is determined by the multinomial coefficient. I.e., if there are k sublists, n_i is the length of the ith sublist, and n is the sum of the n_i's then the number of such permutations is n!/(n_i! * ... * n_k!). The question is how to generate those sublists. Pseudocode is great. An actual implementation in your language of choice is even better!

  Hi, I have a page, and I just added pagination to it, but there's a prob in IE 7 & 8.   Hi, I have been reading templates,functors,callback function for the past week and have referred some good books and articles. I however feel that, unless I can get good practice - programming in templates and use functors-callbacks there is no way I can really understand all the concepts or fluently use them while coding. Could anyone suggest some articles or books or websites where , there is a definition of the problem and also a solution to the same. I could just write code for the problem and check later on if my solution is good enough.. I am also aware that some of our stack-overflow members are experts in templates and callback functions. • I need a simple slideshow for images of different sizes

  I'm looking for a very basic slideshow which displays images of various sizes. For example, the first image could be a standard 800x600 but the next might be a taller portrait image and so on. The slideshow doesn't need to have any controls. The specification just states that the page will be black and in the centre there'll be the area where images will display. As far as I know, it will be very simple like this - www.jeffcutter.net. I'm limited on time here so I'm not able to look into writing a custom one or anything like that. • Best Solution For Authentication in Ruby on Rails

  I'm looking for a pre-built solution I can use in my RoR application. I'm ideally looking for something similar to the ASP.NET Forms authentication that provides email validation, sign-up controls, and allows users to reset their passwords. Oh yeah, and easily allows me to pull the user that is currently logged into the application. I've started to look into the already written pieces, but I've found it to be really confusing. I've looked at LoginGenerator, RestfulAuthentication, SaltedLoginGenerator, but there doesn't seem to be one place that has great tutorials or provide a comparison of them. If there's a site I just haven't discovered yet, or if there is a de-facto standard that most people use, I'd appreciate the helping hand.

• image map alternative (maybe in javascript?)

  Alright, so I was wondering if there was an alternative, lightweight way to creating an image map. Basically, I want to take this image: And have the sections of the diagram light up when they are hovered over, kinda like this (I've mocked it up in photoshop): The other sections (which I haven't named yet) should be able to do the same. Also, I'd like to be able to use javascript later to have sliding links appear from behind those sections (I roughly know how to do that now, so I'm okay that) Does anyone have any suggestions? Just a general direction on what to search for would be great.

• PHP file modification time in milliseconds

  I there, I am currently writing a unit test which asserts that a file did not get modified. The test code execution takes less than one second and therefore I would like to know if it is possible to retrieve the file modification time in milliseconds. filemtime() function returns the UNIX timestamp in seconds. My current solution is using the sleep(1) function which will assure me that 1 second passed before checking if it was modified or not. I don't like that solution since it slows down the test by a great deal. I cannot assert the content equality via get_file_contents() since the data that can be rewritten would be the same. I am guessing it is impossible, is it?

• Httpd Process High memory usage and slow page loads

  Hello all, I am running wampserver on my windows vista machine. I have been doing this for a long time and it has been working great. I have completed loads of projects with this setup. However, today, without me changing anything (no configuration etc) only PHP code changes, I find that every time I load pages of my site (those with user sessions or access the database) are really slow to load - Over 30 seconds, they use to take 1 or 2 seconds. When I have a look at the task manager, I can see on page loads the httpd process jumps from 10mb to 30mb, 90mb, 120mb, 250mb and then back down again. I have tested previous php code projects and they seem to all be slow as well! What is going on? Thanks all for any help on this confusion issue!

  I've heard from reliable sources that Python is a great language that every programmer can learn, but I've heard so much good about it that I'm clearly not getting the whole picture. I'm considering spending more time to learn it, and I've heard more than I need about its virtues (to the point where I've started recommending it having never really used it), so I want to know its drawbacks, flaws, issues, and every single minor point of irritation you've ever had (preferably with explanations readable to one who doesn't program Python, such as with an example in another language). • Two Column Theme, Help, to make both columns seperately Scrollable.

  Hey, I am not sure what to do on this one, I'm not a programmer, but trying to learn CSS as this is how the theme I am using was coded in. I've gotten quite far on my own, but this one stumps me Its two column Theme... As far as I have been able to get, I can use the following: #left { width: 235px; padding: 10px; margin-left: 20px; position: fixed; line-height: 15px; If I change the position to Absolute, The whole page scrolls, If I leave it at Fixed, and add lets say, a Twitter feed, or other type of text that takes me past its reading where you would normally scroll, Its just cut off, cannot get to it, hightlight or scroll.. I've also toyed with the idea, of changing the theme to a 3 column theme, but Again, not a programmer, and i'd be really confused. anyhelp would be great...   I've subclassed MKAnnotation so that i can assign objects to annotations and then assign this object to a view controller like so: - (void)mapView:(MKMapView *)mapView annotationView:(MKAnnotationView *)view calloutAccessoryControlTapped:(UIControl *)control { PlaceDetailView *detailView = [[PlaceDetailView alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewStyleGrouped]; detailView.place = [view.annotation place]; [self.navigationController pushViewController:detailView animated:YES]; [detailView release]; } This is working great but i'm having the following issues: If i try and access the place getter method like so view.annotation.place i recieve an error: Accessing unknown place getter method If i acces the place getter method like so [view.annotation place] i receive a warning: place not found in protocol From my understanding this is because the place object is not defined in the MKAnnotation protocol, although i'm aware of this i'm not sure how to tell the complier that place does exist and it's not calling it blind.

• Unknown Column 'template' in where clause, while using a stored procedure.

  Hello, I have a stored procedure, which has got executed without any errors, but gives me an error "#1054: Unknown column 'templateName' in where clause" when I run it. The stored procedure is delimiter // DROP PROCEDURE getData// CREATE DEFINER=root@localhost PROCEDURE getData(IN templateName VARCHAR(45),IN templateVersion VARCHAR(45),IN userId VARCHAR(45)) BEGIN set @version = CONCAT("SELECT 'saveOEMsData_answersVersion' FROM saveOEMsData where 'saveOEMsData_templateName' = ",templateName," and 'saveOEMsData_templateVersion' = ",templateVersion," and 'saveOEMsData_userId'= ",userId); PREPARE s1 from @version; EXECUTE S1; END // delimiter ; Now I call it using "call getData('templateName','1','285');". And whenever I call it, I get the mentioned error. What could the problem be?? It surely is syntactical, I have been reading the mysql manuals for 2 days and have come out without!!
