I'm currently assigned to write a test for a project, is it necessary to write tests for DAO classes?

Final Integration Testing for Q.A.

A medium sized rails app that our company has been working on is getting close to the end of development and we are going to start doing Q.A. testing on it. We've have been writing unit, functional and integration tests all along and our test coverage is about 99% (even though that really doesn't mean anything). We feel like we have a pretty good test suite but I was wondering if we should be writing final integration tests for every little action we are going to do during our Q.A. process. If so, would using Shoulda or Cucumber be a good idea? We haven't used either of those testing tools yet, but they sound really great. Any ideas or thoughts would be really helpful. Thanks

how rspec creates database between specs

This is a bit of a naive / simple question. I'm having a hard time finding this info online. Basically, does rspec run rake db:test:prepare between every rspec group? Or is it between every example or model? Or does the schema get loaded once and then truncated between each. I need to add a rake task directly after this call to create a view since they are not supported in schema.rb. Either a link or explanation would be greatly appreciated so that I know where to insert my rake task to create a view. Or whether there is a callback like rake db:test:after_prepare thx

Difference in displaying inner div between IE and Chrome

I have this code that has one "outerDIV" that contains an "innerDIV". On chrome the "innerDIV" size is 491px, whereas on IE it is 425px (same as outerDIV). Hence, on Chrome I can see the first two children of "innerdiv": "My test string #1" and "test2". But for IE I can only see the first child. I am not quite sure what the "right" behavior should be, as firefox does the same as IE. However I would like to have IE do the same as Chrome. I have been experimenting with some css styles (mainly overflow and display), but still can't make it right: IE will expand its height instead of its width to make the elements fit. Can you guys help me figure out a way to change the css so that IE will wraps the div elements inline? As a restriction though, I cannot change the width on the HTML. As a benefit, I am using a css that only loads for IE to patch these kind of IE inconsistencies. The same css will NOT load for chrome, so I don't need to worry about messing with chrome when changing the IE CSS. Powershell - remote folder availability while counting files

I´m trying to make a Powershell script that reports if there´s a file older than x minutes on remote folder. I make this: $strfolder = 'folder1 ..................' $pocet = (Get-ChildItem \\server1\edi1\folder1\*.* ) | where-object {($_.LastWriteTime -lt (Get-Date).AddDays(-0).AddHours(-0).AddMinutes(-20))} | Measure-Object if($pocet.count -eq 0){Write-Host $strfolder "OK" -foreground Green} else {Write-Host $strfolder "ERROR" -foreground Red} But there´s one huge problem. The folder is often unavailable for me bacause of the high load and I found out when there is no connection it doesn´t report an error but continues with zero in $pocet.count. It means it reports everything is ok when the folder is unavailable. I was thinking about using if(Test-Path..) but what about it became unavailable just after passing Test-Path? Does anyone has a solution please? Thank you in advance

How to stub Restul-authentication's current_user method?

Hi there, I'm trying to run the following spec: describe UsersController, "GET friends" do it "should call current_user.friends" do user = mock_model(User) user.should_receive(:friends) UsersController.stub!(:current_user).and_return(user) get :friends end end My controller looks like this def friends @friends = current_user.friends respond_to do |format| format.html end end The problem is that I cannot stub the current_user method, as when I run the test, I get: Spec::Mocks::MockExpectationError in 'UsersController GET friends should call current _user.friends' Mock "User_1001" expected :friends with (any args) once, but received it 0 times[0m ./spec/controllers/users_controller_spec.rb:44: current_user is a method from Restful-authentication, which is included in this controller. Is this multi line if statement too complex?

I am validating input on a form and attempting to prompt the user of improper input(s) based on the combination of controls used. For example, I have 2 combo boxes and 3 text boxes. The 2 combo boxes must always have a value other than the first (default) value, but one of three, or two of three, or all text boxes can be filled to make the form valid. In one such scenario I have a 6 line if statement to try to make the test easily readable: if ((!String.Equals(ComboBoxA.SelectedValue.ToString(), DEFAULT_COMBO_A_CHOICE.ToString()) && !String.IsNullOrEmpty(TextBoxA.Text) && !String.Equals(ComboBoxB.SelectedValue.ToString(), DEFAULT_COMBO_B_CHOICE.ToString())) || (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(TextBoxB.Text) || !String.IsNullOrEmpty(TextBoxC.Text))) { //Do Some Validation } I have 2 questions: Should this type of if statement be avoided at all cost? Even lighter than SQLite

I've been looking for a C++ SQL library implementation that is simple to hook in like SQLite, but faster and smaller. My projects are in games development and there's definitely a cutoff point between needing to pass the ACID test and wanting some extreme performance. I'm willing to move away from SQL string style queries, allowing it to be code driven, but I haven't found anything out there that provides SQL like flexibility while also preferring performance over the ACID test. I don't want to go reinventing the wheel, and the idea of implementing an SQL library on my own is quite daunting, even if it's only going to be simple subset of all the calls you could make. I need the basic commands (SELECT, MODIFY, DELETE, INSERT, with JOIN, and WHERE), not data operations (like sorting, min, max, count) and don't need the database to be atomic, or even enforce consistency (I can use a real SQL service while I'm testing and debugging).

I'm testing come code in a service with transactional set to true , which talks to a customer supplied web service the main part of which looks like class BarcodeService { .. /// some stuff ... try{ cancelBarCodeResponse = cancelBarCode(cancelBarcodeRequest) } catch(myCommsException e) { throw new RuntimeException(e) } ... where myCommsException extends Exception .. I have a test which looks like // As no connection from my machine, it should fail .. shouldFailWithCause(RuntimeException){ barcodeServices.cancelBarcodeDetails() } The test fails cause it's catching a myCommsException rather than the RuntimeException i thought i'd converted it to .. Anyone care to point out what i'm doing wrong ? Also will the fact that it's not a RuntimeException mean any transaction related info done before my try/catch actually be written out rather than thrown away ?? Thanks

Local variable not being passed to partial template by render?

I don't seem to be able to pass a variable to my partial template in rails (2.3.5). My code is as follows; In the main view .html.erb file: <% f.fields_for :payments do |payment_form| %> <%= render 'payment', {:f => payment_form, :t => "test" } %> <% end %> and in the _payment.html.erb file: <%= t %> produces a wrong number of arguments (0 for 1) error. The payment_form object is being passed to the partial as f without any problems. I've tried a number of variations on the above syntax (e.g. :locals => {:f => payment_form, :t => "test" } without success. I presume I'm doing something pretty basic wrong but just can't see it.

Trying to create C++/CLI assembly for use in .NET

I'm trying to bring a C++ library into C#, so naturally I am trying to make a C++/CLI project. In visual studio I created a new project (Visual C++ project, class library). I then tried to make a test class out of the pre-generated "Class1" namespace Test { public ref class TestIt { public: void DoWork() { System::Console::WriteLine("sup"); } // TODO: Add your methods for this class here. }; } So I compile in and go to the build folder.... hrmm no .dll wetf?? There's a .dll.intermediate.manifest file, but no .dll. So wut I did wrong?

Accesing server control from withing app_code class

My question is about how to acces a server control (listbox) that is located in default.aspx. I wish to acces this control in Functions.cs (this class is located in the App_Code folder). My page structures: - 1 masterpage with 1 content holder - Default.aspx (all the controls are within the content place holder) - Functions.cs (located in App_Code) Now when i try to fill up the listbox elements i get the error "object reference not set to an instance of an object." What i have tried to gain acces to this control: (this code is located in Functions.cs in App_Code). The particular view that is causing me troubles changes its appearance depending on a url parameter: link_to "sort>name", model_path(:sort_by => 'name') which results in http://mydomain/model?sort_by=name My view then uses this parameter like that: <% if params[:sort_by] == 'name' %> <div>Sorted by Name</div> <% end %> The RSpec looks like this: it "should tell the user the attribute for sorting order" do #Problem: assign params[:sort_for] = 'name' render "/groups/index.html.erb" response.should have_tag("div", "Sorted by Name") end I would like to test my view (without controller) in RSpec but I can't get this parameter into my params variable. Question: Can I some how set FlushMode to ALWAYS in session factory or somewhere else to avoid repeating session.flush() call? All DB calls in DAO goes with HibernateTemplate instance. This method returns false because class_exists return false , it is surely has to do with auto loading ,but confused. help will be appreciated,though I got the feeling that I am looking at wrong place.

RSpec: in-depth differences between before(:all) and before(:each)

Ok, so I've ran into a very strange issue, directly connected with before blocks. I'm doing a integration testing via Watir and RSpec. For a simple test to check if user can perform a login I'm creating a 'user' record in the db by means of factory_girl. So I put the following code: before(:each) do @user = Factory(:user) end if "should perform a login" do # do stuff end In do stuff I call a browser and see how the user tries to login. Unfortunately, somehow he cannot do that — "Username isn't valid". After some investigation I discovered that if I put the code for creating user in before(:all) block, everything magically works. How's that? What's the difference between :all and :each in this context? Also, If I put the code for creating user actually in the test body, it still doesn't work (i.e. user somehow isn't added to the DB or something).

JQuery+Java setting field value with val() + single quote

I have a problem setting the value of a textarea element with jquery's val(). Basically, I have a JSP file which receives a string parameter called 'text'. Java code: String text = (String) request.getParameter('text'); Now I want my textarea element to receive this text: Javascript code: $('#textarea_id').val('<%=text%>'); It works when my text doesnt contain quotes single quotes (and possibly other chars). For example, for text = test' this error happens: Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token ILLEGAL $('#textarea_id').val('test''); I hope you guys understand. I need a way to encode this value... i tried using escape so the quote is replaced by %27, but after unescaping its replaced again and the error happens. Thanks!

The following code creates a table without raising any errors: CREATE TABLE test( ID INTEGER NULL, CONSTRAINT PK_test PRIMARY KEY(ID) ) Note that I cannot insert a NULL, as expected: INSERT INTO test VALUES(1),(NULL) ERROR: null value in column "id" violates not-null constraint DETAIL: Failing row contains (null). ********** Error ********** ERROR: null value in column "id" violates not-null constraint SQL state: 23502 Detail: Failing row contains (null). Why can I create a table with a self-contradictory definition? ID column is explicitly declared as NULLable, and it is implicitly not nullable, as a part of the PRIMARY KEY. Does it make sense? Edit: would it not be better if this self-contradictory CREATE TABLE just failed right there?

Passing GPS speed via the Eclipse Emulator Control

Hi, my app queries the GPS-speed using .getSpeed() on a LocationListener. Is there a way to set this speed using the Eclipse Emulator Control or the command line? I tried to feed multiple sets of coordinates to the emulator via the manual GPS-control, but it didn't pick up a speed from that. Also, using a pre-defined GPX-file and playing it doesn't work for me. I would like to test my app without having to take it on a test-drive in my car every time ;)! Thanks!

How to get REALLY fast python over a simple loop

I'm working on a spoj problem, INTEST. The goal is to specify the number of test cases (n) and a divisor (k), then feed your program n numbers. The program will accept each number on a newline of stdin and after receiving the nth number, will tell you how many were divisible by k. The only challenge in this problem is getting your code to be FAST because it k can be anything up to 10^7 and the test cases can be as high as 10^9. I'm trying to write it in python and having trouble speeding it up. In Visual C++ (2008 and 2010), the following code does not compile with the following error: #include <memory> void Foo( std::shared_ptr< int > test = ::std::make_shared< int >( 5 ) ) { } class P { void Foo( std::shared_ptr< int > test = ::std::make_shared< int >( 5 ) ) { } }; error C2039: 'make_shared' : is not a member of '`global namespace'' error C3861: 'make_shared': identifier not found It is complaining about the definition of P::Foo() not ::Foo(). Does anybody know why it is valid for Foo() to have a default argument with std::make_shared but not P::Foo()?

Maintaining traceability up-to-date as project evolves

During various projects, I needed to make sure that the use case model I developed during the analysis phase is covering the requirements of the project. For that, I was able to have some degree of traceability between requirement statements (uniquely identified) and use cases (also uniquely identified). In some cases, enabling traceability implied some additional effort that I considered (and later proved) to be a good investment. Now, the biggest problem I faced was to maintain this traceability later, when things started to change (as a result of change requests, or as a result of use case changes). Any ideas of best practices for traceability maintenance? (It can apply to other items in the project - e.g. use cases and test cases, or requirements and acceptance test cases) Later edit Tools might help, but they can't detect gaps or errors in traceability. Navigation... maybe, but no warranty that the traceability is up-to-date or correct after applying the changes.
