  • nagios service check

    I am new to nagios and we have a small issue I need to ask assistance with. Many of the machines that we monitor can go unresponsive for a bit when some very intensive cpu tasks are run. This makes nagios send warnings and alerts while these hosts are busy reporting things like 'ping timeout' or 'zombie processes' and even swap space warnings, but in actuality there is not a problem. Is there a way to configure nagios to not send such alerts, but check x number of times over a period of time and only then send an alert at the end of that time if the server in question has not recovered?. Looking at the commands.cfg file, I see entries like this: define command{ command_name check_local_swap command_line $USER1$/check_swap -w $ARG1$ -c $ARG2$ } How could I modify this example to accomplish what I want above.     For certain Restful URIs I want to block certain domains from executing the requests. How can i do this with Apache? Is it possible For example: www.nottrusted.com calls my Restful Api Apache identifies the request is coming from a non-authorized site Apache blocks the caller and returns a 401 Is this possible? Is it easy for someone one spoof the domain? If a request comes from server side code of nottrusted.com will Apache catch the request? Thanks

Is it possible to create an msi that will install the app and the 11 web services and also set-up the app pools & create the apps in IIS? Or would I need an individual setup for each web service?   • Dependent on CVS tagging for automated builds

    My current work relies on using tags in CVS for an automated build process (ANT currently) to build for respective environments (development, QA, production). From our research, neither Git or Subversion support tagging in the same manner. If we use Subversion or Git, they don't support tags (in the same manner - please correct me?). So how would ANT or Maven know what to pick up for the respective build? Example: For a webapp, when viewing our repository say for the web.xml file -- the history would look like: web.xml v1 ... web.xml v1.2.3 Tag: Prod web.xml v1.2.4 web.xml v1.2.5 Tag: QA web.xml v1.2.6 web.xml v1.2.7 Head The ANT build scripts are run as CRON jobs, at different times & intervals for different environments.   • ASP.NET MVC 2 Hosting :: MVC2 deploy - Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.MVC, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies.

    A new MVC 2 project worked on my local machine but when it was deployed to the test server it gave the error 'Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.Mvc, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies.' I have the full Visual Studio 2010 installed on my local machine but just the .NET 4 framework installed on the test servers. It seems the MVC assemblies do not come with .NET 4 framework itself so how to make MVC 2 work on the test servers? When I installed Visual Studio 2010 on my local machine it came with all the fruit included (.NET4 framework, MVC2 etc) so the System.Web.Mvc.dll can be found in my machine's GAC (C:\Windows\assembly). However, since there is no need to bloat the web servers only the plain old .NET4 framework has been installed on the test servers. This does NOT include the MVC assembly and that is why it cannot be found by the web application. You need this assembly to be on your web servers that you are deploying to but you want to avoid having to copy them into the GAC manually and doing all that gacutil mess or maybe you don't have access to your servers if they are hosted by provider. Solution You need to make the System.Web.Mvc assembly bin deployable... okay that doesn't sound easy but here is how to do it for the necessary MVC references: Simply right click the reference and select 'Properties' Then change 'Copy Local' to 'True': Note If your server has .NET 3.5 sp1 installed the new(ish) assemblies System.Web.Routing and System.Web.Abstractions will already be in the GAC. If you had previously deployed an MVC 1 application to a .NET 3.5 server you may remember having to deploy the other two assemblies too. Since MVC2 requires at least .NET 3.5 sp1 you will not need to worry about these assemblies, just System.Web.Mvc

  • How to deploy a number of disparate project types?

The situation is this: I'm developing a product that needs to be deployed to a web server. It consists of 4 website projects, a background service, a couple of command-line tools, and two assemblies shared by all of these components. Now, I also happen to administer the server that this product will be deployed on. So I'm familiar with everything that may need to be done to perform an update: Copy website files Replace the service binary Install updated components in the GAC Configure IIS Update database schema After some research it seems that, to reduce deployment time and to be able to let the other sysadmins handle deployment, I want to deploy all of these as an MSI, except that I don't know a thing about installers. I know VS can generate web deployment projects, but where do I go from there? Being able to simply click Next a few times on an installer is my goal for deploying updates. It would also be nice to modularize it, so for example, I could distribute the four websites among multiple servers and have everything appear as individual components in the installer, and as one entity in Add/Remove Programs. Is all of this too much to ask in a single package?

  • What is Causing this IIS 7 Web Service Sporadic Connectivity Error?

    On sporadic occasions we receive the following error when attempting to call an .asmx web service from a .Net client application: "The underlying connection was closed: A connection that was expected to be kept alive was closed by the server. Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host." By sporadic I mean that it might occur zero, once every few days, or a half-dozen times a day for some users. It will never occur for the first web service call of a user. And the subsequent (usually the same) call will always work immediately after the failure. The failures happen across a variety of methods in the service and usually happens between 15-20 seconds (according to the log) from the time of the request. Looking in the IIS site log for the particular call will show one or the other of the following windows error codes: 121: The semaphore timeout period has elapsed. 1236: The network connection was aborted by the local system. Some additional environment details: Running on internal network web farm consisting of two servers running IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 OS. These problems did not occur when running in an older IIS6 web farm of three servers running on Windows Server 2003 (and we use a single IIS6/2003 instance for our development and staging environments with no issues). EDIT: Also, all of these server instances are VMWare virtual machines, not sure if that is a surprise anymore or not. The web service is a .Net 2.0/3.5 compiled .asmx web service that has its own application pool (.Net 2.0, integrated pipeline). Only has Windows Authentication enabled. We have another web service on the farm that uses the same physical path as the primary service, the only difference being that Basic Authentication is enabled. This is used for a portion of our ERP system. Have tried using the same and different application pool - no effect on the error. This site isn't hit as often as the primary site and has never had an error. As mentioned, the error will only happen when called from the .Net client - not from other applications. The client application is always creating a new web service object for each request and setting the service credentials to System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials. The application is either deployed locally to a client or run in a Citrix server session. Those users running in Citrix doesn't seem to experience the issue, only locally deployed clients. The Citrix servers and the web farm are located in the same physical location and are located in the same IP range (10.67.xx.xx). Locally deployed clients experiencing the error are located elsewhere (10.105.xx.xx, 10.31.xx.xx). I've checked the OS logs to see if I can see any problems but nothing really sticks out. EDIT: Actually, I myself just ran into the error a little bit ago. I decided to check out the logs again and saw that there was a Security log entry of "Audit Failure" at the 'same' time (IIS log entry at 1:39:59, event log entry at 1:39:50). Not sure if this is a coincidence or not, I'll have to check out the logs of previous errors. I'm probably grasping for straws but the details: Log Name: Security Source: Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing Date: 7/8/2009 1:39:50 PM Event ID: 5159 Task Category: Filtering Platform Connection Level: Information Keywords: Audit Failure User: N/A Computer: is071019.<**.net Description: The Windows Filtering Platform has blocked a bind to a local port. Application Information: Process ID: 1260 Application Name: \device\harddiskvolume1\windows\system32\svchost.exe Network Information: Source Address: 0.0.0.0 Source Port: 54802 Protocol: 17 Filter Information: Filter Run-Time ID: 0 Layer Name: Resource Assignment Layer Run-Time ID: 36 I've also tried to use Failed Request Tracing in IIS7 but the service call never actually gets to where FRT can capture it (even though the failure is logged in the web service log). The network infrastructure group said they checked out the DNS and any NIC settings are correct so there is no 'flapping'. Everything pans out. I'm not sure that they checked out any domain controller servers though to see if that could be an issue. Any ideas? Or any other debugging strategies to get to the bottom of this? I'm just the developer in charge of the software and don't really have the knowledge on what to investigate from the networking side of things - although it does sound like a networking issue to me based on what is happening.   • How to fix an endpoint/configuration error using WCF in VB.NET

    I'm working with a small web page that is meant to assist the users of my application. This web page takes a file and sends it to a central server, which then does something with the data and returns a result. I created this application some time ago and am coming back to it recently. I am getting some kind of configuration error right now, although this application used to work. When it stopped working, whenever I ran the page and sent the data to the central server, I would get this error: "Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'CentralService.ICwCentralService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element." Looking at some other issues on the net, I thought I might have had the answer. The service reference to the endpoint was contained in a separate project from the code that called it, but the configuration file in that project had no information about the endpoint. The strange thing is, though, I took those entries from another project that contacts the central server. That application has no problems contacting the central server using these settings. It's not a web page application, but I don't see how that would require these settings to change. I cannot tell what started causing these errors or when. I assume its something that changed outside of the application (e.g. the libraries referenced) that requires an update to the configuration in the application. I am currently using .NET 3.0 for all of my applications. Any help would be appreciated.

    We have a WEb Service named, let's say Foo. So there is a Foo.svc file and a code behind Foo.svc.cs. We add a silverlight project and wish to use the Foo.svc services so we add a Service Reference and call it's namespace FooBar. This creates the following files : Reference.cs Reference.svcmap Foo.xsd Foo.disco configuration.svcinfo Foo.wsdl Also various *.datasource files. Over time we update the Foo.svc and add more Web Services (methods and interfaces) and the number of files in the FooBar directory is growing. I have 26 Foo(nn).xsd files in this directory - where nn = 1 to 26. My configuration.svcinfo is upto configuration91.svcinfo. My question is this? Do any of these files need to be version controlled? Can they all be deleted each time you do a build \ deploy (as long as you do an update service reference)?

    I have a dozen servers in different locations all running the same web service application but each going against their own SQL Server DB. I am writing a desktop application that consumes the web services. I want to present the user with a drop down of all servers in the network that are running the same wweb service application. Do I have to add a ServiceReference for each of the servers running the web service app and thereby having as many proxies as there are servers? Or can a define a single instance of the services and dynamically build a list of endpoints to select from a drop down?

  • Is it possible to change WCF service without regenerating & recompiling client proxy?

    Let's say I have a WCF service which has a method returning object Person. In one of the clients of this service, I can add service reference to the service and start using its method. Now, let's say the Person class is changed on the server, having a new DataMember added. Other clients will make use of this new DataMember, but my client doesn't. Therefore, this client shouldn't even be aware that the service returns s/t "more" than what it needs. Is there any way that my client can still work with the service without having to update the service reference (which, as I understand, means regenerating the proxy & compiling it)?

This may be because: The application configuration file was not found or not an endpoint in the client element item is found, which corresponded to this contract. Where servicename is the name I give the service when I add it in vs2008 and ServiceInterface the interface which is automatically generated for it.

  • XmlSerializer.Deserialize method appends timezone to a time and datetime field

    Have a small script in Microsoft.NET 2.0 that deserializes a XML back to a typed object, connects dyanimcally to a web service using ServiceDescription and binds the deserialized typed object to the WebMethod inbound. The XML prior to serialization looks like below <completion_time>12:19:38</completion_time> on the wire when communicating to the web service looks like below <completion_time>12:19:38.0000000-04:00</completion_time> with the timezone appended to the end. This is causing the time to be read differently when communicating to a web service at a different timezone. is there anyway to let XmlSerializer skip the timezone? Or any other known workarounds?

(The host creates an instance, and passes that to the WebServiceHost) Hosting app:WebServiceHost host = null; SomeService serviceInstance = new SomeService("text", "more text"); host = new WebServiceHost(serviceInstance, baseUri); Problem: When I go to use the variables initialised when the service is created (ie, when a call is made to the service), they are either null or empty... Am I wrong in assuming that as the instance being initialised in the hosting application is used for each request to the WebServiceHost? Any pointers here would be great.

    Hi there, I am just figuring out best practice with MVC now I have a project where we have chosen to use it in anger. My question is. If creating a list view which is bound to an IEnumerable is this bad practise? Would it be better to seperate the code generated by the WCF Service reference into a datastructure which essentially holds the same data but abstracts further from the service, meaning that the UI is totally unaware of the service implementation beneath. or do people just bind to the proxy object types and have done with it ? My personal feeling is to create an abstraction but this seems to violate the DRY principle.

After that my service can open desired windows based processes. Can I configure my windows service in the code (C#) to access the desktop so that I won't have to change the access permission manually after installation?

That web service is only available without ads when you pay for a premium account. Would it be illegal when I block this ads in my Desktop Application?     We installed Service Pack 3 for SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition (64-bit). In the Add or Remove Programs menu we have the following entries under Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit): Service Pack 3 for SQL Server Integration Services 64-bit) ENU (KB955706) Service Pack 3 for SQL Server Notification Services 2005 (64-bit) ENU (KB955706) Service Pack 3 for SQL Server Database Services 2005 (64-bit) ENU (KB955706) Service Pack 3 for SQL Server Tools and Workstation Components 2005 (64-bit) ENU (KB955706) But when I run the following query on the server: select @@version I get this result: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.4035.00 (X64) Nov 24 2008 16:17:31 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2) Why does it not display that it is running Service Pack 3?
