  • Adobe software does not save to network share

    - by Bart van Heukelom
I'm running Windows 7 inside virtualbox on a linux host. I have shared my linux filesystem so it's accesible in Windows under \vboxsvr\sharename. I've mounted this share on S:. For most software, it works fine. Adobe software like Photoshop has problems with it though. I can read from S: just fine, but if I try to save something it gives me the message "There are no more files". How can I make it able to write to the share?

  • Open dialog box won't show files in libraries, but explorer will

    - by Alex
I have the weirdest problem when trying to open or save files. When I try to get to "My Documents" through the "Libraries" side link it won't show any of my files. It will show them if I go around from the C:// drive into the user files though. I thought it was because I didn't have the right location defined for the "Libraries" shortcut, but when I use "Explorer" to open my "Libraries" it shows all the files. Any ideas?

  • find files their name is smaller or greater than a given parameter

    - by Tzury Bar Yochay
    Say that in a given directory I got tzury@x200:~/Desktop/sandbox$ ls -l total 20 drwxr-xr-x 2 tzury tzury 4096 2011-03-09 10:19 N00.P000 drwxr-xr-x 2 tzury tzury 4096 2011-03-09 10:19 N00.P001 drwxr-xr-x 2 tzury tzury 4096 2011-03-09 10:19 N00.P002 drwxr-xr-x 2 tzury tzury 4096 2011-03-09 10:19 N00.P003 drwxr-xr-x 2 tzury tzury 4096 2011-03-09 10:19 N00.P004 drwxr-xr-x 2 tzury tzury 4096 2011-03-09 10:19 N01.P000 drwxr-xr-x 2 tzury tzury 4096 2011-03-09 10:19 N01.P001 drwxr-xr-x 2 tzury tzury 4096 2011-03-09 10:19 N01.P002 I seek for a bash way to grab the list of files which their name is either grater or smaller than a given parameter, for instance: $ my_finder lt N00.P003 shall return N00.P000, N00.P001 and N00.P002 $ my_finder gt N00.P003 shall return N00.P004, N01.P000, N01.P001 and N01.P002 I was thinking of iterating over for name in $(ls) and while $name != $2 but believe there are more elegant way of doing so

  • Generating and collaborating on network map diagrams?

    - by Ian C.
I have to turn out some network topology maps for very large networks. I'd like the format for the maps to be something other people can also edit and contribute to regardless of what software I'm using on my Mac to build them. I don't mind spending money on my end for software, but I can't require that my clients spend any money. I also can't promise my clients are also using OS X -- they could be running Linux or Windows. Is there a best software application on OS X for producing maps that I can share with other, non-OS X, users? Is there a best format for sharing topology maps that I should use when exporting the maps to disk?

  • windows xp cannot access admin share

    - by barlop
I have 3 systems. A,B,Compx all on xp. but comps A and B have an issue with Compx. Compx has network shares I can access. I can do \\compx and get some. But I cannot access the admin share c$ \\compx\c$ gives a login prompt, and I can't get any user/pass to work. I looked at permissions but don't see an issue. Nevertheless, I will describe what I see in the permissions. In the security tab of C, I have Administrators, creator owner, everyone, bob, system, users (6 things there) "creator owner" has nothing ticked, I can't seem to change that. If I tick so they all get ticked, and click apply, 2.5min and it's completed its opration and they all untick. Though this isn't the root of the problem. Since I get the same in the share I can access. In advanced, I see those 6 things, Administrators, creator owner, everyone, bob, system, users (6 things there) all "full control" all are "this folder, subfolders and files".. except creator owner, which is just subfolders and files only I look at the properties for the share I can see. looks the same, except in security..advanced, double clicking any of them the boxes are all ticked but greyed. That's not the problem though since I can access that share. So, I don't know what the problem is.

  • Copying a large directory tree locally? cp or rsync?

    - by Rory
I have to copy a large directory tree, about 1.8 TB. It's all local. Out of habit I'd use rsync, however I wonder if there's much point, and if I should rather use cp. I'm worried about permissions and uid/gid, since they have to be preserved in the clopy (I know rsync does this). As well as thinks like symlinks. The destination is empty, so I don't have to worry about conditionally updating some files. It's all local disk access, so I don't have to worry about ssh or network. The reason I'd be tempted away from rsync, is because rsync might do more than I need. rsync checksums files. I don't need that, and am concerned that it might take longer than cp. So what do you reckon, rsync or cp?

  • Download of ~100MB file from Joomla + Docman component is incomplete (sometimes)

    - by Knix
Hi, I hope this is right place for this. I am currently running Joomla v1 with a file management component called Docman on a Bluehost server. Some users (particularly with slower download speeds) are experiencing partial file downloads with some of my larger files (~100MB). I would like to keep the Joomla + Docman installation. Is there anything I can do to resolve this issue? I would greatly appreciate any recommendations that you may have. Thanks, Knix

  • Burn 30GB zip file to DVD

    - by Joel Coehoorn
I have a zip 30GB zip file containing an archive a digital materials available in the school library that I want to burn to dvd. Of course, 30Gb is far too large for a single dvd and the content is already zipped. I'm open to ideas, but leaning towards suggestions that will help me automatically spread the file over multiple dvds, including a simple program to stitch it back together again later.

  • Automatically reboot Windows8 if no internet activity

    - by GrapeCamel
I have a media server located in a very inconvenient part of my house. Occasionally I will have to reset my router or it will reset itself. The issue is the PC loses connectivity for some reason, and I am forced to walk outside, around the house, into the basement, over a bunch of toys and weights and boxes, to push a button to reboot it. I would love to have it check itself every 5-10 minutes and auto reboot if it is unable to ping a given address/IP. Any ideas how to accomplish this?

  • Maximise network transfer speed of various applications

    - by Alex
When using nc, scp, wget to transfer files between 2 machines on a dedicated 2Mbps link, I get speeds between 0.5 and 1 Mbps. However, when I use iperf -c 10.0.1.4 -t 20 -P 12 (for example) I can maximise the speed of the link (getting stable 2Mbps). Is there a way to make single stream transfers (such as those done by scp) to utilise all/most of the link? Some kind of tcp settings, or iptables...?

  • Software for defining rules for folder permissions and monitoring deviations

    - by Kjensen
Let's say a company has a large number of users, and each user has a home area. On each share used for home area folders, I would like to define some rules saying who is supposed to have which permissions on the folder. Then I would like to audit automatically, that this is actually the case and get some sort of report on deviations. So a rule for \MegaServer\Home01 could be defined something like: Domain Admins - Full Control Backup Agent - Read [Home folder owner] - Full Control I am talking about Windows platform and Windows servers, although I think it would most likely also work for *nix machines that expose Windows shares. Does software like this exist? I could roll my own basic version, but if something already exists, that is usually a better option. I am aware of tools to make displaying permissions easier (AccessEnum, DumpSec), but that is not what I am looking for.

  • linux: upload / download difference on network shares

    - by Batsu
I have a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (with SELinux) which shows significant differences of speed between download and upload (the latter significantly slower) of files shared over the LAN. The bottleneck seems to be the output of the linux machine since I have a rate around 1Mb/s when WinXP machines download files shared (using samba) by the RHEL machine uploading files from the RHEL to a WinXP's shared folder while uploading from the XP machines to linux's shares downloading XPs' shares on the RHEL any share between Windows machines only run smooth (around 50Mb/s). Since the upload from RHEL to WinXP's share is slowed too I would exclude an issue in the configuration of samba. What could possibly determine this limit in the upload speed? update: iptables doesn't show any output rule and disabling it doesn't show any noticeable difference, so I would rule out it too.

  • Mount a tar file - not possible?

    - by leonbloy
It seems one cannot mount a tar file (read only), similarly as one mounts an ISO image file. At least, I have not found any implementation. It would be useful, for example to run a find command inside. Is this really (or practically) impossible to implement? Why?

  • Trimming / cropping a movie file ?

    - by ldigas
Now, I'm not really sure what's the exact term here. As far as I saw, cropping is related to video size. I need a program to trim some parts of the video file. On a timescale, for example, from 0-60s, I'd like to trim the parts from 14-20s, and from 30-35s. Can anyone give a recommendation for such an application ? The movie in question is a .MOV file, so Windows Movie Maker doesn't work.

  • Can I move my Picasa data from one machine to another?

    - by Stuart Hemming
I have lots of photos stored on an external hard disk. I have Picasa installed on my Windows 7 laptop and have spent a lot of time cataloging the collection, put names to faces and the like. I now have a new machine and I want all the hard work I did on my laptop to be available when I plug my external HD in to the new machine. Is there a magic spell I need to cast to make this happen? Or is all the data I need stored with the photos?
