• How do I keep my Mac from constantly going to sleep?

  The system is a PowerPC Mac Mini running MacOS Tiger 10.4.11. When I login (I'm the admin), everything seems fine - until about 10-15 minutes later. Then the system goes into sleep mode. Each time I try to wake the system up - I can barely log in before it goes to sleep again. Sometimes I don't have enough time to enter my password (from the screen saver). If I shut down and restart, then I have that 10-15 mins again - until it again goes to sleep. I checked the settings in the Displays and Energy System Prefs. I looked at Accounts and at Screen Saver System Prefs; no times seemed to be present. I've already reset the PROM and other things (as part of an earlier problem shooting session). If I don't log in at the desktop, things seem to be fine. Nothing in .profile, /etc/profile, or /etc/bashrc seems to stand out. Right now, the system is hardly usable; can someone help?   I've got an ExpressionEngine database and I exported a couple of tables from it, then dropped those tables. The only way I can get the error to go away is to totally delete the database and re-create it. What's causing that error and how can I stop it from happening?

• Can Vista Windows Explorer be repaired/fixed?

  I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on a Sony Vaio laptop. I think somehow my Windows Explorer has become corrupted. I don't recall any certain inciting incident like installing an unreputable 3rd party app or hardware failure but just recently my system won't wake after it's been left idle longer that 20 minutes and goes to sleep. I've also had problems launch certain apps, like Adobe InDesign CS3, that just basically freeze the system but leave mouse movements functioning for a short time before freezing the entire system which requires a hard reboot to resolve the freeze. The system seems to run normally when used but I fear there's a looming possibility that this is a house of cards and will all come crashing down soon. My question is this, can Windows Explorer be repaired/fixed? Before reformatting the system and starting over, which is most likely what I'm going to be forced to do, I'd like explore (no pun intended) my options in fixing the problem with a patch or reinstall or something of that nature. Reformatting my system will eat up a day or two of my time and I just don't have the time to spare right now.

• mysql command line not working

  I have mysql running in my fedora system. I have xampp setup on the system and php projects present in the webspace are working fine. PhpMyAdmin is working fine. echoing phpinfo() in a PHP script also shows mysql enabled. But running mysql connect command mysql -u[username] -p[password] Gives this - bash: mysql: command not found How do I fix that? Any pointers? I guess I need to do some pointing (define some path in some file) so that my system knows that mysql is installed. What exactly do I have to do? Additional Details This system was someone else's and he is not available here. May be PHP/Mysql was setup already in the system. I just freshly extracted xampp for linux into /opt/lampp/ and have put all the above mentioned things (PHP projects and PhpMyAdmin) there. After doing that I had a socket problem (PhpMyAdmin was not working and showing this)- #2002 - The server is not responding (or the local MySQL server's socket is not correctly configured) I restarted lampp using ./lampp restart but problem remained. Then after turning on system today, I started lampp and everything worked just fine. No project issues anymore only command line Mysql not working

• Question About mk-table-checksum Results

  Hello, I have 1 master and 2 slaves. I am using MySQL 5.1.42 on all servers. I am attempting to use mk-table-checksum to verify that their data is in sync, but I am getting unexpected results on one of the slaves. First, I generate the checksums on the master like this: mk-table-checksum h=localhost --databases MYDB --tables {$table_list} --replicate=MYDB.mk_checksum --chunk-size=10M My understanding is that this runs the checksum queries on the master which then propagate via normal replication to the slaves. So, no locking is needed because the slaves will be at the same logical point in time when they run the checksum queries on themselves. Is this correct? Next, to verify that the checksums match, I run this on the master: mk-table-checksum --databases MYDB --replicate=IRC.mk_checksum --replicate-check 1 h=localhost,u=maatkit,p=xxxx If there are any differences, I repair the slaves like this: mk-table-sync --execute --verbose --replicate IRC.mk_checksum h=localhost,u=maatkit,p=xxxx After doing all of this, I repaired both slaves with mk-table-sync. However, everytime I run this sequence (after everything has already been repaired), one slave is perfectly in sync but one slave always has a few tables out of sync. I am 99.999% sure that the data on the slaves matches, since I repaired everything and the tables were not even updated on the master between runs of the checksum script. What would cause a few tables to always show out of sync on only one of the slaves? I am stuck. • Missing BootMgr in Vista

  Am in really deep trouble here and would use every advice available from everyone out there.. Am message just pooped on my screen and i had to restart my laptop. upon restarting the BootMgr got corrupted. Am running Windows Vista 32 bit by the way.. i got onto Google with a friend's PC and found two basic ways of fixing it. the first one that requires windows to automatically fix it using Startup repair ends up with the error message : "Startup REpair cannot repair this computer automatically" the second option that requires me to rebuild the BCD scans my system and finds the operating system on drive D:\Windows which i believe should be C:. if i hit Y(yes) for the rebuild process to take place i get the message "The required system device cannot be found" i then try the second option which requires me to recreate the BCD Store ends up with an error message that says "The store export operation has failed. The requested system device cannot be found". proceeding from there is meaningless since the system device cannot be found. I somehow believe the device cannot be found because its identifying the windows installation on D: instead of C: but how to change that i have no idea... I dot know how it happens to identify an O/S on D: when there's none there... How do i go about fixing the BootMgr? I have very important files on my system and cant afford to reinstall windows... i really need to fix this..Please help...

• SQuirreL Client: Opening up a table in a separate tab

  I've switched to SQuirrel Client to view an Oracle database with a variety of tables. At any given time, I need to look at the contents of several related tables at the same time. The problem is that, at least by default, SQuirrel Client does not open up multiple tables at a time. When you click on a different Table object, the main view is refreshed with newly selected table data. Oracle's SQLDeveloper (which I am trying to move away from) did this by default if I recall, but there was an option to "freeze" panes. Does a similar option exist in SQuirrel Client? I do not require the ability to view the contents of two different tables on the same screen (i.e. a split view) but I would like the ability to have tabs for each table so I can quickly switch between each table view rather then having to find the table in the table list over and over again. Note: I am using this in a professional capacity but if it does not "belong" here then I suppose it could be moved to superuser.

• mysqldump skip one table

  I'm running a cronjob to backup our system using mysqldump. The database contains 90 or so tables. One of these tables is HUGE and every once in a while causes the dump to fail. From the manual I see that you can specify specific tables to dump shell> mysqldump [options] db_name [tbl_name ...] This got me thinking. What if I have two jobs, one for dumping the huge table, and one for all the others. To accomplish this it would be nice if I could to something like shell> mysqldump -u backupuser -p database huge_table > db_huge_table.sql shell> mysqldump -u backupuser -p database --skip huge_table > db_rest.sql Unfortenately I'm not seeing such and option. I could of course explicitly state the 90 tables, but that just seems like a mess. Another option would be a script of some sort, but before checking that route I'll try this resource. MySQL is 5.1.61 on CentOS 6.2

• Upgrading memory in a laptop

  I'm a bit confused about all the memory types and various bus frequencies of modern consumer PCs. Requesting expert help on the subject. So far I'm confident that: I have an Asus X51L laptop with an unknown set of configuration options. The CPU in there supports PAE, so I still have a chance to extend the memory beyond 3GiB; and the upper limit of the system is 8GiB. (?) The laptop has two SODIMM slots, one of which is occupied by a 2GiB bank, and the other one is empty. dmidecode and lshw tools consistently state 533 Mhz frequency of the bank. The last one confuses me the most. I failed to find out characteristics of the northbridge in this laptop, and still can't figure out what DDR2 to seek for. Is it DDR2-1066? Or, rather, PC2-8500/PC2-8600? Wouldn't a DDR2-800 bank harm the system's performance? Which kind of modules should I look up in stores? Update: I have bought a 2 GiB DDR2-800 SODIMM, and it seams that the system can't handle 4 GiB of memory. When installed by itself in either slot, both new and old bank (which btw happens to be marked GDDR2-677) work just perfectly; i.e. any configuration resulting in 2 GiB works. When both banks are installed though (totalling in 4 GiB), the memcheck86 tool produces horrible artifacts and crashes, and system reboots; an Ubuntu system can be started and even logged into a Unity session, but the system reboots too in this case from even a minor RAM load. So it's pretty obvious to me now that this laptop doesn't support 4 GiB of RAM or more.

• Why are my Windows 7 updates continuously failing?

  I'm an advanced level user here with an odd issue. I have two Windows Updates that are failing to install, every single time. I'm getting a mysterious "Code 1" error on both updates, an error for which I'm having difficulty finding a solution. The updates in question are: Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243) System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [May 2011] Because these updates are failing, the Shut Down button in my start menu always has the shield icon next to it, indicating that "new" updates will be installed on shut down. But, of course, they'll fail and when the PC is restarted, the shield icon is still there. • How to optimize a postgreSQL server for a "write once, read many"-type infrastructure ?

  Greetings, I am working on a piece of software that logs entries (and related tagging) in a PostgreSQL database for storage and retrieval. We never update any data once it has been inserted; we might remove it when the entry gets too old, but this is done at most once a day. Stored entries can be retrieved by users. The insertion of new entries can happen rather fast and regularly, thus the database will commonly hold several millions elements. The tables used are pretty simple : one table for ids, raw content and insertion date; and one table storing tags and their values associated to an id. User search mostly concern tags values, so SELECTs usually consist of JOIN queries on ids on the two tables. To sum it up : 2 tables Lots of INSERT no UPDATE some DELETE, once a day at most some user-generated SELECT with JOIN huge data set What would an optimal server configuration (software and hardware, I assume for example that RAID10 could help) be for my PostgreSQL server, given these requirements ? By optimal, I mean one that allows SELECT queries taking a reasonably little amount of time. I can provide more information about the current setup (like tables, indexes ...) if needed.

• Logging communication between two VMs

  Hi, I'm trying to set up "malware lab" described in this paper. So far, I've set up Windows guest system, adding one Host-only Network adapter, and setting this (sorry if the names aren't exactely correct, I don't have an english language version): - IP Address - 10.0.0.3 - Subnet mask - 255.255.255.0 - Default gateway - not set - Preferred DNS - 10.0.0.4 - Alternate DNS - not set And a Linux guest system - Ubuntu 9.04 - with two Network adapters - Bridged (eth0) and Host-only (eth1), and setting eth1 IP Address to 10.0.0.4, leaving the eth0 to be set by DHCP. Same when I try to ping the Linux system from within the Windows. But when I try to access any web page from within the Windows system, I would expect that this action should get logged by iptables. But thing is, I don't see any of that kind of lines in log file (If I am looking in the right place, that is. :) It is at /var/log/messages, isn't it?). So, what do you think might be the problem here? I should note, that this is the first time I'm using linux, so don't expect ANY working knowledge of Linux at all... :) Also, since english is not my mother tongue, feel free to point out any gramatical mistakes... :) Thanks for any advice.

• upload process times out for different time zones

  I have an inhouse(NY) app that cients can upload files to. Usually uploads go pretty quickly for most clients but this particularly cient in the UK always have problems with uploads. not sure if they get any errors but since we log all exceptions, we see this...Error: System.Web.HttpUnhandledException: Exception of type 'System.Web.HttpUnhandledException' was thrown. ---> System.Net.WebException: The operation has timed out at System.Web.Services.Protocols.WebClientProtocol.GetWebResponse(WebRequest request) at System.Web.Services.Protocols.HttpWebClientProtocol.GetWebResponse(WebRequest request) at System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapHttpClientProtocol.Invoke(String methodName, Object[] parameters) at ... This shouldn't even be an issue because since we noticed they have had this issue before so we bumped up these to maxRequestLength="2097151" executionTimeout="14400". Further investigating this error, i read that it could be a thread timeout since the default is 20minute. A worker process with process id of serving application pool was shutdown due to inactivity. Application Pool timeout configuration was set to 20 minutes. A new worker process will be started when needed. Problem is I am not entirely sure if that really is the case as all other cients mostly North American, have no issues but then their uploads don't seem to go beyond 80mb and the UK client have done a 700mb upload before that i know of. We have tested 750mb before and the whole process took about 15min for upload and processing. Any help on what the real issue here might be? Thanks.

• Accessing the partitions on an VLM volume

  Suppose you have an LVM volume /dev/vg0/mylv. You have presented this as a virtual disk to a virtualised or emulated guest system. During installation the guest system sees it as /dev/sda and partitions it into /dev/sda{1,2,5,6} and completes the installation. Now at some point you need to access those filesystems from within the host system, without running the guest system. fdisk sees these partitions just fine: # fdisk -l /dev/vg0/mylv Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/vg0/mylv1 2048 684031 340992 83 Linux /dev/vg0/mylv2 686078 20969471 10141697 5 Extended /dev/vg0/mylv5 686080 8290303 3802112 83 Linux /dev/vg0/mylv6 8292352 11980799 1844224 83 Linux However, the devices such as /dev/vg0/mylv1 do not actually exist. I guess that because they're within an LV, the OS does not recognise this type of nesting by default. Is there any way I can prod Linux so that /dev/vg0/mylv1 or equivalent appears and thus becomes mountable within the host system? I understand that it's possible with qemu-nbd, and will use this if necessary. However, I was hoping for something more direct if possible, rather than simulating a network block device and attaching that.

As you can see I have a button1 on my form. When I click it I want it to display to me the structure of the table I selected in my treeview (a treeview node). Not too many details, just the name of the columns in my table, type of columns, primary keys. I've tried to follow many tutorials but I can t seem to manage it.
