• Memory leak with JAXB

  Hi, I am getting Out of Memory error: Memory Exception in thread "main" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space at org.apache.xerces.dom.CoreDocumentImpl.createElement(CoreDocumentImpl.java:564) I have a standalone Java program which fetches data from DB and create an XML file using DOM. I get the above error if the data fetched is huge, in my case it is 1,000,000 records. I have defined 2GB as heap size while calling the Java class from unix. I tried it with JAXB, but still do not any significant improvement. Any suggestions how to improve the code.

• Cannot open xls file in IE

  We have JSF web application that generates XLS file and gives user link to thes file. All works fine if access this file via HTTP. But IE(8) cannot open/save this xls file via HTTPS. There is following error message: Internet Explorer cannot download ...466088C5C313F92808BDB0AFF3447 from testhost. Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later. I can open the same document via HTTPS in Firefox and in Chrome. What can be the problem with IE? • Java: ArrayList bottleneck

  Hello, while profiling a java application that calculates hierarchical clustering of thousands of elements I realized that ArrayList.get occupies like half of the CPU needed in the clusterization part of the execution. The algorithm searches the two more similar elements (so it is O(n*(n+1)/2) ), here's the pseudo code: int currentMax = 0.0f for (int i = 0 to n) for (int j = i to n) get content i-th and j-th if their similarity > currentMax update currentMax merge the two clusters So effectively there are a lot of ArrayList.get involved. Is there a faster way? I though that since ArrayList should be a linear array of references it should be the quickest way and maybe I can't do anything since there are simple too many gets.. but maybe I'm wrong. I don't think using a HashMap could work since I need to get them all on every iteration and map.values() should be backed by an ArrayList anyway.. Otherwise should I try other collection libraries that are more optimized? Like google's one, or apache one.. Thanks

• A help system for a PHP web app

  Hi, As our new web app gets more complicated, so the need for help docs increases. I am not talking about documenting code, I am literally talking about application help. So myapp/help, or for example, enabling context help from a particular point in the app with a link such as myapp/help/users/create/ etc. Are there apps out there for doing this? For example, Wufoo use wordpress for http://wufoo.com/docs/ which I like (and understand wp, so its a nice solution), and Xero have a lovely ASPX http://help.xero.com/ interface. But I'm thinking there might be more dedicated implementations for what I'm looking for. We're on a linux, apache, postgresql, php stack, but a mysql supported installation is not the end of the world. Does anyone have any suggestions for this? It's a bit of a minefield when googling php + help + system.

• Is it possible to connect iPhones through NAT traversal techniques over 3G for peer 2 peer gaming

  Is it possible to connect an iPhone to another iPhone or any other network client talking that game's protocol. I was thinking that I could use the same NAT Traversal technique used in the XBox 360 to host games on users XBox's through Firewalls. For NAT traversal to work effectively I'd have to have a central server that would allow clients to "broadcast" that they were hosting so that another client could initiate the NAT connection. In the link provided this is called relaying. Is there any inherent limitation of the US AT&T 3G network that will block the NAT traversal techniques (would you be limited to wifi firewall NAT traversal)? • How get Tomahawk functionality with JSF 2.0 (Glassfish V3)

  I've started to upgrade an existing application written with JSF 1.1 and MyFaces Tomahawk 1.1 to JSF 2.0 to get facelets etc. I've now run into the snag that apparently Tomahawk is not JSF 2.0 compatible as it expects the stand-alone version of Facelets instead of the built-in to JSF 2.0 with the following error: org.apache.catalina.LifecycleException: com.sun.faces.config.ConfigurationException: CONFIGURATION FAILED! com.sun.facelets.tag.jsf.ComponentHandler (it appears to be placed in javax.faces.view.facelets now). I have looked around and there doesn't seem to be a JSF 2.0 facelet compatible version of Tomahawk. I only believe I need t:updateActionListener (inside t:dataTable) and the rowSpan facility of t:panelGroup. Is all this functionality available in JSF 2.0 directly, or must I locate a new library giving this? Any suggestions?

• Using GIT Smart HTTP via IIS

  I recently read Scott Chacon's post "Smart HTTP Transport", and I was hoping that it might have become possible via IIS (windows 7) since that post was written. I haven't been able to find anything showing how it can be done, and Apache is not an option in my IIS 7 based environment. So, I'm at a loss (git daemon was foiled for me by a combination of AVG anti-virus and AD). I want to provide LDAP authenticated read/write access for selected users. So this question seems not to be relevant. Do you know of a way to provide access to GIT via IIS?

• Android XMLRPC Fault Code

  Hey, We have been using XMLRPC for android and it was working well until we got our hands dirty with Base64 encoding for byte[] (images) -- (we did base64_string.replace("/","$$") for transmission). We have tried undoing the changes and its looking an XMLRPC error. We are getting the following error in the DDMS: 06-10 23:27:02.970: DEBUG/Test(343): org.xmlrpc.android.XMLRPCFault: XMLRPC Fault: [code 0] 06-10 23:27:02.970: DEBUG/Test(343): at org.xmlrpc.android.XMLRPCClient.callEx(XMLRPCClient.java:308) 06-10 23:27:02.970: DEBUG/Test(343): at org.xmlrpc.android.XMLRPCMethod.run(XMLRPCMethod.java:33) Just before this I checked the body (xml message -- which is perfect) and the response received: 06-10 23:27:02.940: INFO/System.out(343): Response received: org.apache.http.message.BasicHttpResponse@437762f8 Since it the message is not even reaching our cloud, the issue is with XMLRPC for android. Do you know why this would be? Why won't netbeans deploy my application so I can run and test it?

• How to automatically add SVN commit messages and revision numbering to java file?

  I'm working on an Apache Wicket project in Eclipse with Maven2 -- my SCM is Subversion. I've got Subclipse set up which I use to commit changes to the repository. I've seen several projects with nice headers containing the current revision number and at the bottom of the java source file there's a list of all the changes that have been committed to the file including the comments that were passed. Is there any way of achieving this sort of behaviour automatically? At work I'm using MKS which does this automatically but I am yet to figure out how to achieve this with SVN and Eclipse.

• copy or move a file from one ftp server to another

  I have a java application, which copies or moves a bunch of giga files from one ftp server to another. Currently it copies a file from the first fpt server to the local computer (where it runs) using ftp get and then copies it to the second ftp server using ftp put. I use net library from apache. Is it possible to copy it directly from one ftp server to another bypassing the local computer? One idea is to create a java telnet session and and send a couple of ftp commands. Will it work? Any other suggestions?

• Too many connections to 212.192.255.240

  Recently, my Internet slowed down drastically. I downloaded a tool to see the TCP/IP connections from my Vista computer. I found out that a lot TCP/IP connections are being connected to 212.192.255.240 through SVCHost. It seems that it is trying to connect to different ports. I think that my computer is being infected with some kind of malware etc. But I am not sure how to get rid of it. I did a little bit of research on this IP but found nothing. Any suggestions are highly appreciated. UPDATE: This is the HiJackThis log file and I can't find any thing weird. Also, the program is also trying to create connections to 91.205.127.63, which is also from Russia.   Hello, Can anyone tell me where do I find some useful documentation on handling copying rows, cells, columns from one excel file to another, using POI? I need to insert in one blank excel file, 2 or more templates from other files, dynamic. I also need to keep all the styles made for the group of cells that I copy. How can I do that? Nothing found on apache poi tutorial on this point. I am using POI 3.0.1. Thank you!

  I have a scenario where I have single entry point Servlet and further Servlets that requests are forwarded to that undertake heavy processing. I am looking at options to distribute this load and I would like to know if it is possible using Tomcat or another platform to forward requests between Servlets sitting on different servers using a cluster type configuration or similar. • How to use htaccess to rewrite url to html anchor tag (#)

  Hi - I have a situation where I want to take the following URL: /1/john and have it redirect using Apache's htaccess file to go to /page.php?id=1&name=john#john so that it goes to an html anchor with the name of john. I've found a lot of reference to escaping special characters, and to adding the [NE] flag so that the redirect ignores the # sign, but these don't work. For example, adding [NE,R] means that the URL just appears in the browser address as the original: http://mysite.com/page.php?id=1&name=john#john. Any help would be appreciated.

• Drupal localhost redirecting to www.localhost.com

  Hey! I am working on a drupal site which I checked out (svn) to my localhost. Now the problem is that when I go to: http://www.site.com it all works fine, but when I go to: http://localhost/work/site I get redirected to http://www.localhost.com/work/site I have ran the install.php script and all works great. It reinstalls everything but when I go to the main site the redirect occurs. I removed the .htaccess file, didn't do anything. I am using windows 7 ultimate 64 (also tried on winxp pro 32) apache 2.2, php 5.2.13 Anyone know anyway to fix this? Thanks

• Simple comet example using php and jquery

  I have searched on google for hours without finding a good and simple example of the comet technique using PHP. I just need an example that uses a persistent HTTP connection or something similar. I dont want to use a polling technique because I have something like that set up and not only is it difficult to work with and manage its a big hog of resources. Also I am using IIS7 not Apache. • PDF Text Extraction Approach Using OCR

  Has anybody attempted to extract text from a PDF using an OCR library and Java? What did you find to be the most reliable library for text extraction. Most of the approaches I've seen (tesseract, GOCR) are C libraries that would require some JNI code to be written. I'm familiar with pdfbox, which is now an Apache incubator project at version 0.8.x, but it's text extraction isn't always accurate. I'm looking for an alternative approach that is somewhat more reliable. I've not tried Asprise JavaPDF yet, in the process of trying that, but wanted to know more about the OCR approach (if it's possible). Any help would be appreciated.

• *Client* scalability for large numbers of remote web service calls

  Hey Guys, I was wondering if you could share best practices and common mistakes when it comes to making large numbers of time-sensitive web service calls. In my case, I have a SOAP and an XML-RPC based web service to which I'm constantly making calls. I predict that this will soon become an issue as the number of calls per second will grow. On a higher level, I was thinking of batching those calls and submitting those to the web services every 100 ms. Could you share what else works? On a lower level side of the things, I use Apache Xml-Rpc client and standard javax.xml.soap.* packages for my client implementations. Are you aware of any client scalability related tricks/tips/warnings with these packages? Thanks in advance Yuriy
