  • Oracle Inroduces a New Line of Defense for Databases

    Today at the 2011 RSA Conference, we announced the immediate availability of our new Oracle Database Firewall, the latest addition to a comprehensive portfolio of database security solutions. Oracle Database Firewall is a network-based software solution that monitors database traffic, and can detect and block SQL injection and other attacks from reaching Oracle and non-Oracle databases. According to the 2010 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report, SQL injection attacks against databases are responsible for 89% of all breached data. SQL injection attacks are a technique for controlling responses from the database server through applications. This attack exploits the inherent trust between application layer and the back-end database. Previously the only way organizations had to safeguard against SQL injection attacks was a complete overhaul of their application code. Obviously a very costly, complex, and often impossible undertaking for most organizations. Enter the new Oracle Database Firewall. It can help prevent SQL injection attacks by establishing a defensive perimeter around your databases. The Oracle Database Firewall uses an innovative SQL grammar analysis to inspect the database traffic against pre-defined policies. Normal expected traffic is allowed to pass (and can be optionally logged to demonstrate regulatory compliance), ensuring no false positives or disruption to your business. SQL statements that are explicitly forbidden or unknown SQL statements can either pass, be logged, alert, block or be substitute with pre-defined SQL statements. Being able to substitute an unknown potentially harmful SQL statement with a harmless statement is especially powerful since it foils an attack while allowing the application to operate normally and preventing DoS attacks.   • How do I backup my C++ Builder component installation?

    Hi I finally have my c++ Builder 2010 installation the way I want it, with all my components upgraded and installed. (touch wood) I have been working with c++builder since version 1 and I know from countless previous traumatic experiences that this state of affairs could change in an instant. I would like to backup the installation and component set. Is there a way to do this? A tool perhaps? A menu command that I have maybe missed all these years? I don't want to have to reinstall all the components from the bpl source again. I make nightly backup images of my entire drive, I would like to do this for c++builder only if possible. If it's a matter of simply copying files, which files would I need to copy? Are there entries in the registry that would need to be restored? Thanks in advance for any thoughts and suggestions

So I want to retrieve a lot of columns from the table and add this to a list, so I will print this list as a ListView.     Ok what I've been trying to do is figure out how to make it so when I press the search button on my program the code that is currently just being printed to the console will print to the text area I have. I can't figure out how to do this and I've searched google and still found no answer.   • VSDB to SSDT Part 1 : Converting projects and trimming excess files

    Visual Studio 2012 introduces a change regarding Database Projects : they now use the SSDT technology, which means old VS2010 database projects (VSDB projects) need to be converted. Hopefully, VS2012 does that for you and it is quite painless, but in my case some unnecessary artifacts from the old project were left in place.  Also, when reopening the solution, database projects appeared unconverted even if I had converted them in the previous session and saved the solution.   Converting the project(s) When opening your Visual Studio 2010 solution with Visual Studio 2012, every standard project should be converted by default, but Visual Studio will ask you about your database projects : “Functional changes required Visual Studio will automatically make functional changes to the following projects in order to open them. The project behavior will change as a result. You will be able to open these projects in this version and Visual Studio 2010 SP1.” If you accept, your project is converted. And it should compile with no errors right away except if you have dependencies to dbschema files which are no longer supported.   The output of a SSDT project is a dacpac file which replaces the dbschema file you were accustomed to. References to dacpac files can be added to SSDT projects in the same fashion references to dbschema could be added to VSDB projects.   Cleaning up You will notice that your project file is now a sqlproj file but the old dbproj is still here. In fact at that point you can still reopen the solution in Visual Studio 2010 and everything should show up.   If like me you plan on using VS2012 exclusively, you can get rid of the following files which are still on your disk and in your source control : the dbproj and dbproj.vspscc files Properties/Database.sqlcmdvars Properties/Database.sqldeployment Properties/Database.sqlpermissions Properties/Database.sqlsettings   You might wonder where the information which used to be in the Properties files is now stored. Permissions : a Permissions.sql was created at the root level of your project. Note that when you create a new database project and import a database using the Schema Compare capabilities from Visual Studio, imported table and stored procedure definition files will hold the permission information (along with constraints and, indexes) SQLVars : they are defined inside the publish.xml files Deployment : they are also in the publish.xml files Settings : I was unable to find where those are now. I suppose they are not defined anymore   But Visual Studio still says my database projects should be converted !     I'm using entity framework model first development, and I need to do database migration often, The EF database generation power pack doesn't help a lot, because that data migration never worked here. The database migration here I mean, change the model, and then I can update the existing database from the model, but creating a new one. Is there any free of charge tool here invented here yet? Or would this going to be a new feature of next EF release? PS: I love django's ORM.

  • Need to store and backup HD vid files. But need to access them alot.

    I've had my 700 Gb HDD ever since I bought my computer so partitioning it is out of the question. What I need is a place to keep my HD vid files so when I edit, I don't get a long load time in the editing software. But I also need to keep a back-up of all my other important files which I haven't been doing. Should I buy an additional internal drive JUST for vid files and buy an external for backup of all my files? What are my best options?

  • Can you recover from a backup with bad blocks?

    The hard drive in my Macbook recently gave up while using it on the plane (dual prop, lots of vibration unfortunately). I have a backup of its contents from a few weeks ago, but there are files that aren't included in it that I would like to recover. As it stands right now, I have it plugged to my macbook by USB. Snow leopard recognizes it, but can't mount it. Therefore, tools like Diskwarrior and Techtools do not work. I started doing a clone of it with Data Rescue 3, but after 7 hours of activity (20% through the drive), it has copied 130 GB of the drive but reports all of the data as "bad blocks". My question is this: Is any data recoverable if the clone is completely composed of bad blocks?
