• Any way to make this PostgreSQL count query any faster?

  I'm running a case-insensitive search on a table with 7.2 million rows, and I was wondering if there was any way to make this query any faster? Currently, it takes approx 11.6 seconds to execute, with just one search parameter, and I'm worried that as soon as I add more than one, this query will become massively slow. • Override ToString() in your Classes

  One of the reasons I love teaching is because of the questions that I get from attendees. I was giving a presentation at DevConnections and was showing a collection of Product objects. When I hovered over the variable that contained the collection, it looked like Figure 2. As you can see in the collection, I have actual product names of my videos from www.pdsa.com/videos being displayed. To get your data to appear in the data tips you must override the ToString() method in your class. To illustrate this, take the following simple Product class shown below: public class Product{  public string ProductName { get; set; }  public int ProductId { get; set; }} This class does not have an override of the ToString() method so if you create a collection of Product objects you will end up with data tips that look like Figure 1. Below is the code I used to create a collection of Product objects. I have shortened the code in this blog, but you can get the full source code for this sample by following the instructions at the bottom of this blog entry. However, you can create a whole string of information if you wish to display more data in your data tips. Just concatenate any properties you want from your class and return that string. When you now run the application and hover over the collection object you will now see something that looks like Figure 2. Figure 2: Overriding ToString() in your Class Another place the ToString() override comes in handy is if you forget to use a DisplayMemberPath in your ListBox or ComboBox. The ToString() method is called automatically when a class is bound to a list control. Summary You should always override the ToString() method in your classes as this will help you when debugging your application. Seeing relevant data immediately in the data tip without having to drill down one more layer and maybe scroll through a complete list of properties should help speed up your development process. • Convert Chrome Bookmark Toolbar Folders to Icons

  So you have your regular bookmarks reduced to icons but what about the folders? With our little hack and a few minutes of your time you can turn those folders into icons too. Condensing the Folders Reducing bookmark folders to icons is a little more tricky than regular bookmarks but not hard to do. Right click on the folder and select “Rename…”. The folder’s name should already be highlighted/selected as shown here. Delete the text…notice that the “OK Button” has become unusable for the moment. Now what you will need to do is: Hold down the “Alt Key” Type in “0160” (without the quotes) using the numbers keypad on the right side of your keyboard Release the “Alt Key” after you have finished typing in the number above Once you have released the “Alt Key” you will notice two things…the “cursor” has moved further into the text area and you can now click on the “OK Button” again. There is our folder after editing. And it works just as well as before but without taking up so much room. Here is how our “iconized” folder looks next to our bookmarks. Perfect! What if you want to reduce multiple folders to icons? Perform the same exact steps shown above for each folder and pack your “Bookmarks Toolbar” full of folder goodness! As seen here the folders will have a little more space between them in comparison with singular bookmarks due to the “blank name” for each folder. For those who may be curious this is what your bookmarks will look like in the “Bookmark Manager Page”. Note: If you export your bookmarks all bookmarks contained in multiple blank name folders will be combined into a single folder. Conclusion With just a little bit of work you can pack a lot of goodness into your “Bookmarks Toolbar”. • Send an E-mail Quickly with the GmailThis! Bookmarklet

  Sometimes you need to send out a quick e-mail for a project that you are working on, something really important that you just remembered, or perhaps just a note to yourself. If you use Gmail and like keeping things simple then join us as we look at the GmailThis! Bookmarklet. GmailThis! in Action To get set up all that you need to do is visit the webpage (link provided below) and drag the bookmarklet to your “Bookmarks Toolbar”. For our example we decided to go with the “personal note” approach. As you can see here we selected/highlighted a portion of the text and then clicked on our new bookmarklet. The bookmarklet will automatically copy and paste the name of the webpage, the URL, and any text that you selected/highlighted into the new e-mail. A nice feature that we liked was that it opened in a new temporary window to help focus on composing our letter. This is what you will see when you have finished your letter and clicked “Send”. The window will automatically close itself after a few seconds so that you do not even have to worry with it afterwards. Looking at our “Inbox” there is our new e-mail looking oh so nice. Conclusion If you need to send out a quick e-mail using your Gmail account then this bookmarklet makes it as quick and simple as possible. • Determining whether a visitor reached two different pages in one visit

  I have a funnel that I would like to track. Tracking this funnel won't work with the default "goal funnel" tracking in Google due to the fact that I am mixing events and pageviews. As such, I've created a series of reports: Visits to demo pages - An inclusion filter on "Page". Triggers an Event on these pages - An inclusion filter on "Page" and "Event Category". Does not bounce - An inclusion filter on "Page" and an exclusion filter on "Exit Page" for these same pages. Reach our storefront - ?? Purchase something - An inclusion filter on "Page" and a report that shows "Transactions". At a basic level, I need to track users who reached demo pages, then reached any page on our store. Intuitively, I created a segment, used two inclusive "Page" filters (one for the demo pages and one for any page in our store), and combined them with an "AND" operator. I thought this was working until I tried to do the same thing in a dashboard widget and on a custom report. When I tried the same thing in those areas, I got zero results. I figured this might be because widgets and custom report filters function differently from segment filters (the options are different for all of them), so I tried applying my "demo page && store page" segment to a report that gave me a general page list. All I saw was a list of the specific pages. I tried simplifying things by creating a custom report that showed all visits to store pages, then applied a segment that filtered for users who visited demo pages. This got me the same numbers as my "demo page && store page" segment, but showed a list of demo pages. This has led me to believe that the "demo page && store page segment" approach and the "demo segment && store report" functionally behave the same. However, this experience has left me questioning whether they're giving me what I want. Are these methods showing me all users who reached both sets of pages? Is there a better/easier/more standard way of doing this aside from looking at visitor flow reports? I'm trying to avoid a combination of custom variables/events and using the horizontal funnel approach since it would consume a large number of our limited goals and seems more complicated than is necessary for tracking this funnel.

  Assuming my server is www.mydomain.com, on Nginx 1.0.6 I'm trying to proxy all request to http://www.mydomain.com/fetch to other hosts, the destination URL is specified as a GET parameter named "url". For instance, when user requests either one: http://www.mydomain.com/fetch?url=http://another-server.mydomain.com/foo/bar http://www.mydomain.com/fetch?url=http://another-server/foo/bar it should be proxyed to http://another-server.mydomain.com/foo/bar I'm using the following nginx config and it works fine only if the url paramter contains domain name, like http://another-server.mydomain.com/...; but fails on http://another-server/... on error: another-server could not be resolved (3: Host not found) nginx.conf is: http { ... # the DNS server resolver 171.10.129.16; server { listen 80; server_name localhost; root /path/to/site/root; location = /fetch { proxy_pass $arg_url; } } Here, I'd like to resolve all URL without domain name as host name in mydomain.com, in /etc/resolv.conf, it's possible to specify default search domain name for the whole Linux system, but it doesn't affect nginx resolver: search mydomain.com Is it possible in Nginx? Or alternatively, how to "rewrite" the url parameter so that I can add the domain name?

• Amazon AWS Ec2 instance, Elastic IP, Domain name from external domainseller, and Google Apps for Email

  We are hosting our site on an Ec2 instance. Our Elastic IP is w.x.y.z and Public DNS is: ec2-w-x-y-z.compute-1.amazonaws.com. We've bought a domain name domainname.com from a lesser known domain-name-seller. We added an A-record pointing domainname.com to w.x.y.z. Will this work or do we need a CNAME record to point to the same too? We wanted to use Google apps for emailing so adjusted the TXT/MX records according to the Google Apps instructions to be able to send/recv email using @domainname.com email addresses. Have we got it right, more important, we came across queries relating to email sent from ec2-w-x-y-z.compute-1.amazonaws.com (our users can send email from their onsite accounts) going to spam (rDNS not pointing to domainname.com but to ec2-w-x-y-z.compute-1.amazonaws.com). How can we fix this? We came across SPF records, do they provide a complete solution? We aren't sure as to how to use them. Can you help pls? Thank you, Sid

• Safari's location bar (auto-suggest and web search)

  Auto-suggest don't seem to work for queries with spaces. Am I missing something? If you select an item from the suggestion list that was matched by its title, the title is filled in before the address. Can you change it to work like in other browsers? SMRT disables searching by title completely. Can you combine Top Hit, History and Bookmarks into a single section? The preferences starting with DebugSafari4 don't work anymore. (Like DebugSafari4IncludeFancyURLCompletionList.) Can you direct unresolved addresses to something like google.com/search?q=?&btnI instead of ?.com? Like by changing keyword.URL in Firefox. Can you remove or hide the web search field? In Camino, Cruz and Fluid it can be resized to zero width. You can't circumvent the normal maximum ratio with InputFieldWidthRatio. AddressBarIncludesGoogle doesn't appear do anything in the current version. Are there fixes or workarounds to any of these? I'm lumping these issues together, because they are closely related — a lot of them were introduced when the location bar was redesigned in Safari 5. I'm also hoping to find something like an extension or a plugin that would replace the standard location bar.

• Google Maps mashup for notes/househunting

  I'm house-hunting at the moment and I'm trying to geek it out er I mean streamline the decision-making process. I'm currently using google maps's "my maps" feature to store pins to properties. I create one map per estate agent, then put relevant into into the individual pins. The idea being, I can look at the map and quickly choose which property to view next. However the pins don't currently link back to the map they're owned by, so you have to hunt a bit to get the estate agent info, it's a hassle to get all maps displayed in a new session if you have lots of agents, and each pin doesn't automatically show its bubble so you have to do lots of clicking to see all the info you want. I've tried Evernote, but despite its tag system initially showing some promise, I can't find a way to seemlessly integrate maps. A few google searches don't turn anything up either. Even the big sites, like http://www.rightmove.co.uk, don't seem to provide any maps integration by default. You can see an individual house's location, but not all results of a search. So is there a web site or windows program I could use to do something like this? Viewing all properties on a map is a must, as is quick access to contact details.

• How do I determine whether this email bounce is my fault?

  I use Google Apps to handle email for my personal website, so I have an email address [email protected] through that, and I also have a Gmail account [email protected]. Now, I've been trying to send emails to a particular recipient who shall be known as [email protected]. When I send the email from my Gmail account with the @gmail.com address, it works fine. However, when I send it from my Google Apps account with the @ellipsix.net address, I get a bounce message which includes the following text: Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently: [email protected] Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 554 554 mail server permanently rejected message (#5.3.0) (state 17). The bounce message suggests that it is up to the mail administrator of the recipient domain example.com to fix the problem, whatever it is. But I would like to be as sure as possible that nothing needs to be fixed on my end. I already have DKIM signatures enabled for my domain, and I have published an SPF DNS record. Is there something else I should check or do, or can I be confident that it's up to the recipient to fix this issue? Does the "state 17" in the bounce message mean something relevant? I've included my domain name in the question so people who know more than me about this stuff can independently check the relevant DNS records or other information. This other question seems similar, but I've already investigated everything suggested in the answers there (except for contacting Google, which I don't want to do unless I suspect it's their issue to fix).

• WSS Search fills 10 GB limit on SBS server 2011

  I've got a SBS Server 2011 Standard SP1 that isn't very busy. 2 Users local and 2 remote. We have sharepoint that has maybe a dozen small documents at most. I've just started getting the following two error occur Could not allocate space for object 'dbo.MSSBatchHistory'.'IX_MSSBatchHistory' in database 'WSS_Search_SERVER' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full. Create disk space by deleting unneeded files, dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup. And CREATE DATABASE or ALTER DATABASE failed because the resulting cumulative database size would exceed your licensed limit of 10240 MB per database. Digging around in SQL manager I see that WSS Search DB file size is 10241MB, the log file is only 147 MB Firstly, why is WSS Search taking up so much space? How can I stop it from doing so, and what can I do now to get things running ok. I know about log file truncating and this isn't the case here since the log is tiny. Any help is appreciated. There is plenty of free space on the disk (791GB free) Thanks Kactus

• Reverse and Forward DNS set up correctly but sometimes MapReduce job fails

  Ever since we switched over our cluster to communicate via private interfaces and created a DNS server with correct forward and reverse lookup zones, we get this message before the M/R job runs: ERROR org.apache.hadoop.hbase.mapreduce.TableInputFormatBase - Cannot resolve the host name for /192.168.3.9 because of javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: DNS name not found [response code 3]; remaining name '9.3.168.192.in-addr.arpa' A dig and nslookup both show that the reverse and forward look-ups both get good responses with no errors from within the cluster. • How do I stop postfix from handling my mail?

  Here's the situation: I have a domain, let's say domain.com. That domain has Google Apps for Business enabled, so all mail delivered to @domain.com will end up at Google (MX records point to Google). I have a PHP script at domain.com that I use to send mail to myself. But when the PHP script tries to send mail to [email protected], Postfix at that server decides that the recipient is a local user (because the address matches the domain Postfix itself is at), and tries to deliver the mail locally. But inevitably fails as the mailbox cannot be found. How can I instruct Postfix to not try to handle locally any emails to @domain.com and just send them forward so Google can pick them up? I have already removed $myhostname from mydestination field in Postfix's main.cf file, and I have restarted Postfix but Postfix still tries to deliver the mail locally. • Gmail won't forward mail sent to myself.

  I own a dedicated server with a domain, we'll say foobar.com. I use google apps to manage my email SMTP servers. Now I don't check two gmail inboxes. I have my own personal one, and then I have foobar.com's inbox from google apps. Naturally the easiest thing to do is just have all foobar's emails forwarded to my personal one. So then I am only checking 1 inbox. This is all fine and dandy. I use MSMTP that with a wrapper that uses /etc/aliases. I have it set so any mail attempting to go to root (Things from cron, etc) will go to [email protected]. So when google app's (foobar.com) gets an email from the email I have setup with it ([email protected]), it automatically doesn't forward the message. This is a "feature" to gmail/google apps I suppose. How do I get around it? workarounds? etc. I could just have my alias set to my personal email but I wanted a place to have all foobar related emails archived in one place (googleapps).

• Migrating to AWS Cloud with auto-scaling - where to put Redis and ElasticSearch?

  I've been trying to research this topic but haven't found anywhere that recommends where to install services such as Redis and ElasticSearch when migrating to a cloud framework. I'm currently running a Symfony2 application on 2 static servers - one is running MySQL and the other is the public facing web server, which also has Redis and ElasticSearch running on it. Both of these servers are virtualised, but they're static in terms of not being able to replicate at present (various aspects are still dependent on the local filesystem). The goal is to migrate to AWS and use auto-scaling to be able to spin up and kill web servers as required, but I'm not clear on what I should put on each EC2 instance. Should they be single-responsibility only? i.e. Set up individual instances for the web server(s), Redis, and ElasticSearch and most likely an RDS instance for MySQL and only set up auto-scaling on the web server(s)? I don't foresee having to scale the ElasticSearch server anytime soon as it's only driving the search functionality, but it's possible that Redis may need to be replicated at some point - but should this be done manually? I'm not sure of how this could be done automatically as each instance needs to be configured to know about it's master/slave(s) as far as I know. I'd appreciate advice on this. One more quick question while I'm here - how would I be able to deploy code changes when there are X web servers currently active? I'm using a Capifony deployment script (Symfony2 version of Capistrano), which I think can handle multiple servers easily enough by specifying an array of :domain addresses...but how can should this be handled when the number of web servers can vary?

• Browsers behaving very strangely/not working in Windows Vista SP 2

  Sorry, that I'm posting this as a guest, but I couldn't log in. Maybe you can help me. I had a virus and gave this inspiron 1525 laptop to a computer expert, who removed it. I think he reinstalled Windows, because when I got it back IE 7 was installed. So after 3 hours I installed SP 1, SP 2, IE 9 and Google Chrome. First when there was only SP 1 and IE 7 installed, I could only use Google in IE, and I had copy the links download links of the updates (Update center didn't work) over to Google Chrome to download it there, because I couldn't do that in IE. Now I can't use Google at all, but strangely Bing works. Also I can display certain pages, but not all (I could open StackExchange, but not the login page; that's why I'm posting this as a guest). Another strange thing is, that now a webpage either works in both browsers (I couldn't install Opera, because the installer says it can't download the files) or in none. It is a 32 Bit system. It would be nice if you could help! I hope I will be even able to post this question...

• Write stderror to a file using PowerShell

  How do I capture error messages from a PowerShell-launched command in a text file? I searched the Internet for a while and found that supposedly, I should be able to do something like cmd /c "big blob of text >C:\output.txt 2>c:\errors.txt" to direct the output to output.txt and the errors to errors.txt but when I try to run the command, I get the following error: cmd.exe : The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. At C:\Users\Zian\Desktop\Untitled1.ps1:27 char:4 + cmd <<<< /c $command + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (The filename, d...x is incorrect.:String) [], RemoteException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : NativeCommandError Furthermore, if I try to run the command without everything starting at "2", then the command executes correctly and output.txt catches the right output. I looked at Redirect stderr to variable in powershell but it wasn't helpful because the answer to that question suggests capturing the entire output and filtering it in memory. In my case, I am backing up every database on a computer and since the databases won't fit in my laptop's RAM, I cannot use the question's solution. I also found tantalizing suggestions about using $err = @(command goes here) but with no information on what to do other than simply inserting that line of text. I tried to utilize the search function on Serverfault with the string "@()", but it did not return any results. What can I do to get the error messages into errors.txt?

• RSS "Newspaper" / Google Reader replacement

  With the impending demise of Google Reader I've been looking at ways to replace it. I've decided that what might be cool is to get an email every morning, with all the updates from the last twenty-four hours, maybe in the style of a newspaper. That's not a very original idea, since sites like http://fivefilters.org/pdf-newspaper/ and http://feedjournal.com/ already do this, but they both have various drawbacks. In particular both require a single feed, will just take the last n items, and clicking around on their website. The Pro option for feedjournal seems almost like it would do the job, but the project seems to be dead, and there's no way to buy it. Before I hack together something crazy I'd like to know if there's a better solution to my problem. In short: I want to replace Google Reader with a daily pdf email, how should I do this? edit: I didn't award the bounty because nobody solved the problem (not that I'm assuming it has a solution). Answers like "well for the way I do things this wouldn't work" aren't actually helpful, even if they are well-meaning.

• How do I use a list of filenames to find a folder on my hard drive, that contains most matches of these filenames?

  I need a program that will use a list of file names to find a folder on my hard drive that contains the most of these filenames. Long story short I made a giant map. This map was live and got ruined. New map data files have been generated, and previous map data files have been altered. What does this mean? This means file sizes have been changed, and there will be new files that have never been in the backup folder. Some files map files could also have been generated in other projects. So there could be filenames on my computer not associated with this due to the way the files are named when created. So If I take an indidual file for example "r.-1.-1.mca" This file could show up on my hard drive 10 times. Anyway, the goal is to take 100 map files, turn them into a list, and then search the hard drive and find the folder that has the highest count of matching map file names. Can anyone figure out a way to do this? I am thinking about manually searching for every single file.

• How to unit test asynchronous APIs?

  Hi all. I have installed Google Toolbox for Mac (http://code.google.com/p/google-toolbox-for-mac/) into Xcode and followed the instructions to set up unit testing found here (http://code.google.com/p/google-toolbox-for-mac/wiki/iPhoneUnitTesting). It all works great, and I can test my synchronous methods on all my objects absolutely fine. However, most of the complex APIs I actually want to test return results asynchronously via calling a method on a delegate - for example a call to a file download and update system will return immediately and then run a -fileDownloadDidComplete: method when the file finishes downloading. How would I test this as a unit test? It seems like I'd want to the testDownload function, or at least the test framework to 'wait' for fileDownloadDidComplete: method to run. Any ideas much appreciated!
