Will Parallel-port dongle work on USB-to-Parallel Adapter?

We have a niche program running on a Win2K laptop that uses a security dongle connected to a parallel port for authentication. The laptop is getting creaky and I spent a frustrating night last night shopping various websites for a new laptop that had a parallel port. Seems I'm about three years late [G]. The question I have, is, if I buy a new(ish) laptop and use a USB-to-Parallel Port adapter, will the security dongle work? I know I'm not being specific about the app, but it's one most people wouldn't have heard of anyways. I've been guessing the answer to my question is no, since the app won't know to send a request out to the non-existent port. But, if the process actually is that the dongle sends a message INTO the computer every now and then, then it might work. And, I'm not sure whether the dongle is only needed at program startup time or randomly. The dongle is a 'permanent' addition to the old laptop. This is all about the money. We can have a newly-updated version of the program (which won't add any features we need) for the princely sum of $2700. Or we can spend $500 on a refurbed laptop still running WinXP, add a 30 buck adapter and keep the same solid, stolid performance we've come to appreciate. But it all comes down to the dongle behaviour. Oh, and a dock won't work. The whole laptop issue is about moving about the various nooks and crannies of the building with laptop in hand. Linq PredicateBuilder with conditional AND, OR and NOT filters.

We have a project using LINQ to SQL, for which I need to rewrite a couple of search pages to allow the client to select whether they wish to perform an and or an or search. I though about redoing the LINQ queries using PredicateBuilder and have got this working pretty well I think. The client is now insisting on being able to perform 'and not' / 'or not' searches. Webservice returning 403 error

I'm wondering whether I'm receiving the 403 errors because there are too many attempted connections being made to the webservice. If this is the case how do I get around it? I've tried creating a new instance of InternalWebService each time and disposing of the old one but I get the same problem. I've disabled the firewall and the webservice is located locally at the moment. I beginning to think it may be a problem with the credentials but the control tree is populated via the webservice at some stage. If I browse to the webmethods in my browser I can run them all. Sometimes Xcode appears to ignore target build settings?

Hi all, I've created a iPhone static library project with two targets like this Project -- Library (Device) target -- Library (simulator) target The device target has the SDK set to the device so it produces an armv6/7 library and the simulator target is set to the simulator SDK so it produces an i386 library. The issue I'm having is that the SDK settings on the targets keep getting overridden by the XCode active target setting. i.e. if I build the device target, but the XCode window is showing the active SDK as being the simlulator, XCode will build a simulator library instead of a device library, ignoring the settings of the target. Although it will put it into the *-iphoneos/ directory in the build directories! I originally had the same issue with another static library project, and after a lot of playing around got everything to work correctly. i.e. The targets ignore the XCode active SDK because they have their own specifications of what to build. The problem is that I don't know what made it work in that project and I have not been able to reproduce the issue in it either. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on? ciao Derek

Hi When entering code in CMS static block(possible page as well) and in this code there is empty DIV tags such us: <a href="javascript:hide1(),show2(),hide3()"><div class="dropoff_button"></div></a> The DIV tags will be gone next time you open the block to edit. it will look as this <a href="javascript:hide1(),show2(),hide3()"> </a> without the div tags ...and saving again it modifies your code. I think it something to do with the 'show/hide editor'. By default it goes into the WYSIWYG editor, so when updating static block i don't see any other solution than 1."hide the editor' by clicking 'show/hide editor' 2.delete the old code from the editor 3. get code that doesn't miss the DIVs 4. Merge new code with code in 3 in some other editing software than magento 5. paste result in the magento editor, 6. Save Is this bug? What is your solution? Can i turn of WYSIWYG editor?

Make an ActiveX control work without a form?

We are using Topaz Signature pads. They provide their APIs in the from of an ActiveX control which is to be put on a Winform control. Well, the way our project will work we do not want to have a form(at least not visible). Would it just be easier to create a new hidden form and put the control on it so it's invisible?

Cisco ASA5505 won't sync with NTP

Today I noticed that the clock my Cisco ASA 5505 firewall was running about 15 minutes late, which surprised me since I've set up the NTP client. My two NTP servers 10.10.0.1 and 10.10.0.2 are virtualized Windows Server 2008 R2 domain controllers, and both have the correct time. As shown below, the ASA knows about the two servers, can ping them and seems to poll them periodically, so I suppose it can reach them both. The ASA claims its time source is NTP, however the clock is unsynchronized. Neither host is marked as synced. Result of the command: "ping 10.10.0.1" Type escape sequence to abort. Can't connect to public WiFi with MacBookPro at coffee shops and libraries

The Problem: I can't connect to public, unencrypted WiFi at my local public library or Peets Coffee. My Setup: Late 2006 MacBookPro running 10.5.8. I have Parallels installed. It's supposed to work like this: 1) Connect to their unencrypted WiFi network 2) Open a browser which redirects you to their "enter password/agree to terms" page. 3) Browse normally. I can connect to the WiFi network, but when I try to authenticate I always get stuck in a redirect loop. It's been like this for a while. Even before I upgraded to 10.5.8. I never have trouble with encrypted networks or regular open WiFi. What I've tried: Disabling Parallels connections in Network Prefs. Superstition: somehow Parallels installed something in the network stack that's messing me up. Pinging the IP address of the WiFi node I'm connected to. I can ping it, it's there, but I still get stuck in this authentication redirect loop. Tried different browsers, tried different cookie and security settings. Even tried IE under Parallels. No dice. Tried flushing DNS cache. Asked library and coffee employees for help. It didn't go well. My Question: Anybody else have this problem? What should I be looking for?

Cannot access Application configured on local IIS 7 using IP/machine name

I have a windows 7 machine 64 bit and IIS 7 I have a default website on the IIS.Its binding is {IP: All Unassigned , Port:80 , Host Name : blank} I have added a new asp.net application to that website,mapped physical path, have set the virtual path as "MyWebApp". Application pool for "MyWebApp" is "DefaultAppPool" {.Net Framework: 4.0 ; Managed Pipeline Mode: Classic} The problem I am facing is I can access the website using http://localhost, http://IP.IP.IP.IP and http://MyMachineName But I can not access the Application other than using http://localhost/MyWebApp What should I do if I want to access the webapp using http://MyMachineName/MyWebApp OR http://IP.IP.IP.IP/MyWebApp Please note : I have already created an inbound rule to allow all HTTP traffic for port 80 in firewall settings.

Unable to connect to UNC share with WindowsIdentity.Impersonate, but works fine using LogonUser

Hopefully I'm not missing something obvious here, but I have a class that needs to create some directories on a UNC share and then move files to the new directory. When we connect using LogonUser things work fine with no errors, but when we try and use the user indicated by Integrated Windows authentication we run into problems. Lenvo B450 won't boot on battery only?

We bought a Lenovo B450 laptop almost a year ago. It comes with a NVIDIA GEFORCE with CUDA graphics and so the battery life is terrible. It will only last 1:30 hours max. We try to run it on battery as much as possible but because the battery life is short sometimes we can't notice that the battery is so low until the computer blacks out. Because of the short battery life, the laptop is always plugged on AC power. One night the computer froze. Because it was already late, I just reset the laptop my pressing the power button for 10 seconds. The laptop shut off but I did not bother restarting it. The next morning, the laptop won't turn on on battery only. It will only turn on on AC power. The computer instantly shuts down(improperly) once the adapter is removed. But the battery was at 100% then. Now it is slowly losing charge (currently at 74%). The battery indicator says, "Plugged in, not charging". I want to bring the laptop to school but I can't because it won't be portable at all. Just to summarize it all: 1) The laptop suffered some blackouts already. 2) The laptop was on AC power most of the time. 3) When the computer froze, it was reset (hard shutdown). 4) The laptop won't boot with battery only since then. 5) The laptop will shutdown instantly when AC adapter is removed. 6) The battery won't charge and is gradually losing charge. ======================= UPDATE ============================= We got the battery replaced. Unfortunately, it delivers only 2 hours max of power.

Apache rewrite rules redux

I've got a REST framework that when plopped into any directory should Just Work(TM), and it seems to work fine when I've got projects in subdirectories, but not if it's in root. So, given a few example directories; / /project1 /bingo/project2 /hoopla/doopla/minor/project3 All of these works fine, except I'm getting "funnies"* when the project runs in the root directory (bit hard to explain, I suppose, but the second level rewrites are not working properly). Here's my attempt at a generic .htaccess file: RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^static/ - [L] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^$ RewriteRule .* ./ [R,L] RewriteRule ^index.php - [L] RewriteRule (.*) index.php?q=$1 [QSA,PT] (And yes, all projects have a subdirectory ./static which is ignored by rewrites) What I'm trying to achieve is a set of rewrite rules that work for most cases (which is, again, plonking the project in a directory the webserver serves). I'm not a rewrite rules wiz by a long shot, and any good advice and gotchas would be appreciated (and yes, I've gone through too many introductory articles. I need some serious juice.) More info on the funnies; my webserver has docroot in one spot (under /usr/share/apache2/default-site/), but a set of rules that says that /projects is pulled in from somewhere else that's not a subdirectory of docroot (/home/user/Projects/). When I go there, I get a list of /projects subdirectories, and if one of those subdirectories gets called (restmapp) with the proposed rewrite rules, I get ; The requested URL /home/user/Projects/restmapp/index.php was not found on this server.

InvalidCastException in DataGridView

(Using VS 2010 Beta 2 - .Net 4.0 B2 Rel) I have a class, MyTable, derived from BindingList where S is a struct. S is made up of several other structs, for example: public class MyTable<S>:BindingList<S> where S: struct { ... } public struct MyStruct { public MyReal r1; public MyReal r2; public MyReal R1 {get{...} set{...}} public MyReal R2 {get{...} set{...}} ... } public struct MyReal { private Double d; private void InitFromString(string) {this.d = ...;} public MyReal(Double d) { this.d = d;} public MyReal(string val) { this.d = default(Double); InitFromString(val);} public override string ToString() { return this.real.ToString();} public static explicit operator MyReal(string s) { return new MyReal(s);} public static implicit operator String(MyReal r) { return r.ToString();} ... } OK, I use the MyTable as a binding source for a DataGridView. I can load the data grid easily using InitFromString on individual fields in MyStruct. The problem comes when I try to edit a value in a cell of the DataGridView. Going to the first row, first column, I change the value of the existing number. It gives an exception blizzard, the first line of which says: System.FormatException: Invalid cast from 'System.String' to 'MyReal' I've looked at the casting discussions and reference books but don't see any obvious problems. Any ideas?

Finding cause of TCP retransmission within a LAN

Hello denizens of Server Fault I have an irritating problem with a LAN of about 100 computers, 2 Windows domain servers, and 12 VoIP phones. Since their installation around a year ago, every week or so, we notice a VoIP phone resetting itself - occasionally in the middle of a call. Simultaneously there are often signs of temporary loss of connection on computers: freezes in explorer while accessing network shares, errors in our administration software due to loss of connection to the database server. I have been doing some Wireshark monitoring on the connection between the VoIP PBX and the rest of the network. Wireshark picks up a clump of retransmitted TCP packets at the times when we record phone restarts. The Wireshark log shows about 2 clusters of retransmissions a day ranging from 5 packets to hundreds. Those in each cluster are mainly between the PBX and some set of the VoIP phones, but not always the same set. Often retransmissions at the same time are to phones connected to the same switch, but sometimes retransmissions occur together to phones at opposite ends of the network. There are usually some coincident retransmissions in passing TCP traffic, for example between client machines and the file servers. The spikes in retransmissions and phone resets do not correlate well with when the network is heavily loaded. They seem to occur slightly more during the day, but most in the evening, when traffic should be decreasing. They occur reasonably often late at night when most computers are turned off and traffic should be lowest. Do you have any ideas that might help diagnose the cause of problems like this? One thing I have not yet tried, but should have, is updating the firmware of all the switches.

Converting From Castle Windsor To StructureMap In An MVC2 Project

I am learning about best practices in MVC2 and I am knocking off a copy of the "Who Can Help Me" project (http://whocanhelpme.codeplex.com/) off Codeplex. In it, they use Castle Windsor for their DI container. One "learning" task I am trying to do is convert this subsystem in this project to use StructureMap. Basically, at Application_Start(), the code news up a Windsor container. Two classes and inline functions

I have two classes and both of them uses some of the other class, on example: // class1.h class Class1; #include "class2.h" class Class1 { public: static Class2 *C2; ... }; // class2.h class Class2; #include "class1.h" class Class2 { public: static Class1 *C1; ... }; And when I define it like in example above, it works (I also have some #ifndef to avoid infinite header recurency). But I also want to add some inline functions to my classes. And I read here that I should put definition of inline function in header file, because it won't work if I'll put them in cpp file and want to call them from other cpp file (when I do it I get undefined reference during linking). But the problem here is with something like this: // class1.h ... inline void Class1::Foo() { C2->Bar(); } I get error: invalid use of incomplete type ‘struct Class2’. So how can I do it?

SmtpClient.SendAsync - How to ensure my application doesn't finish before callback?

Hi, I need to send emails asychronously through a console application. I need to do some DB updates on the callback but my application is exiting before the callback code gets run! How can I stop this from happening in a nice manner rather than simply guessing how long to wait before exiting. I would imagine the Async calls get placed in some form of thread? Is it possible to check if any are waiting to be called? Replacing specific HTML tags using Regex

Alright, an easy one for you guys. We are using ActiveReport's RichTextBox to display some random bits of HTML code. The HTML tags supported by ActiveReport can be found here : http://www.datadynamics.com/Help/ARNET3/ar3conSupportedHtmlTagsInRichText.html An example of what I want to do is replace any match of <div style="text-align:*</div> by <p style=\"text-align:*</p> in order to use a supported tag for text-alignment. I have found the following regex expression to find the correct match in my html input: <div style=\"text-align:(.*?)</div> However, I can't find a way to keep the previous text contained in the tags after my replacement. Any clue?
