  Ages old question: You have 2 hypothetical eggs, and a 100 story building to drop them from. The goal is to have the least number of guaranteed drops that will ensure you can find what floor the eggs break from the fall. You can only break 2 eggs. Using a 14 drop minimum method, I need help writing code that will allow me to calculate the following: Start with first drop attempt on 14th floor. If egg breaks then drop floors 1-13 to find the floor that causes break. ElseIf egg does not break then move up 13 floors to floor number 27 and drop again. If egg breaks then drop floors 15-26 starting on 15 working up to find the floor egg breaks on. ElseIf egg does not break then move up 12 floors to floor number 39 and drop again. etc. etc. The way this increases is as follows 14+13+12+11+10+9+8+7+6+5+4+3+2+1 So always adding to the previous value, by one less. I have never written a sorting algorithm before, and was curious how I might go about setting this up in a much more efficient way than a mile long of if then statements. My original idea was to store values for the floors in an array, and pull from that, using the index to move up or down and subtract or add to the variables. The most elegant solution would be a recursive function that handled this for any selected floor, 1-100, and ran the math, with an output that shows how many drops were needed in order to find that floor. Maximum is always 14, but some can be done in less.

  I have an ajax call and would like to recall it once I finish parsing and animating the result into the page. And that's where I'm getting stuck. I was able to recall the function, but it seems to not take into account the delays in the animation. i.e. The console keeps outputting the values at a wild pace. • "Function object is unsubscriptable" in basic integer to string mapping function

  I'm trying to write a function to return the word string of any number less than 1000. Everytime I run my code at the interactive prompt it appears to work without issue but when I try to import wordify and run it with a test number higher than 20 it fails as "TypeError: 'function' object is unsubscriptable". Based on the error message, it seems the issue is when it tries to index numString (for example trying to extract the number 4 out of the test case of n = 24) and the compiler thinks numString is a function instead of a string. since the first line of the function is me defining numString as a string of the variable n, I'm not really sure why that is. • em1: watchdog timeout -- resetting virtualbox

  everyone. I try to configure network adapter of my freebsd on virtualbox machine. At first setting up, I got it right. However, after a couple of reboots, my VM gives me a error message: says "em1:Watchdog timeout -- resetting" I tried to google it, and there is no solution that works for me. The following is my network adapter of my VM: Apapter1: NAT Adapter2: Host-only Adapter vboxnet0 On my Virtualbox setting: Host-only networks: Adapter: IPv4 address: 192.168.56.10 IPv4 network mask: 255.255.255.0 On my FreeBSD VM /etc/rc.conf ifconfig_em0="DHCP" ifconfig_em1="inet 192.168.56.11 netmask 255.255.255.0" Moreover, strange thing is that, for example, if timeout error message show at ttyv0 , when I log in at different ttyv[1-9], the error message will not be shown. but in ttyv0, it still gives me the message. And, in term of functionality of em1, it does work. I have no clue about this problem. Hoping any one can give me a solution or suggestion. That will be great! Thanks a lot. In the example, all code is inline, but in our real code there is no inline code. Update (29 Sept 09): Some of these answers are well written however they seem to get missing the point of this question: this is simple contrived example to discuss using getters/setters vs variables initializer lists or private validator functions are not really part of this question. I'm wondering if either design will make the code easier to maintain and expand. Some ppl are focusing on the string in this example however it is just an example, imagine it is a different object instead. I'm not concerned about performance. we're not programming on the PDP-11

• import text file containing line breaks into excel

  I have a plain text file looking like this: "some text containing line breaks" I'm trying to talk excel 2004 (Mac, v.11.5) into opening this file correctly. I'd expect to see only one cell (A1) containing all of the above (without the quotes)... But alas, I can't make it happen, because Excel seems to insist on using the CR's as row delimiters, even if I set the text qualifier to double quote. I was sort of hoping that Excel would understand that those line breaks are part of the value - they are embedded in double quotes which should qualify them as part of the value. So my Excel sheet has 5 rows, which is not what I want. I also tried this Applescript to no avail: tell application "Microsoft Excel" activate open text file filename ¬ "Users:maximiliantyrtania:Desktop:linebreaks" data type delimited ¬ text qualifier text qualifier double quote ¬ field info {{1, text format}} ¬ origin Macintosh with tab end tell If I could tell Excel to use a row delimiter other than CR (or LF), well, I'd be a happy camper, but excel seems to allow the change of the field delimiter only, not the row delimiter. The values that differ from app to app have been isolated and I'm trying to figure out the best way to apply these custom values to the classes on an app-to-app basis. Should I hold them in code? // I might have 10 customizable values for each class, that's a long signature! • Rails 2.3.14 setting expire_after for sessions is ignored

  I have next config in my environment.rb: config.action_controller.session_store = :cookie_store config.action_controller.session = { :expire_after => 14.days, :domain => DOMAIN, :session_key => '_session', :secret => 'some_string' } Setting session_store to active_record_store or mem_cache_store didn't help. Also i've tried just setting cookie from controller (with all founded options for expire): cookies[:test] = { :value => 'test' , :expires => 3600.to_i.from_now.utc } In both ways all sessions and cookies are deleted after closing browser window - they are only for browser session. I've tried almost all variants founded in the Internet - no luck( My config is: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, rails 2.3.14, ruby Enterprise Edition 1.8.7, Phusion Passenger version 3.0.11 and Nginx compiled by Phusion Passenger. I've an options that it's Nginx not allowing setting some headers but also didn't find any solution. Any help appreciated! Thanks UPD. i've tried to put all configs for sessions to config/initializers/session_store.rb - nothing changed. i have a feeling that it's not a rails problem. may it be phusion + nginx error? i don't even know how to check where the problem is.

I am using the following code to display a UIDocumentInteractionController on an ARC-enabled iOS 7 project: - (void) exportDoc{ // [...] docController = [UIDocumentInteractionController interactionControllerWithURL:[NSURL fileURLWithPath:path]]; docController.delegate = self; [docController presentOpenInMenuFromBarButtonItem:mainMenuButton animated:YES]; } First I didn't want to create a property that holds the controller reference, but as many people said that there are not alternatives to it. It is defined as @property (strong) UIDocumentInteractionController* docController; exportDoc is run in the main thread using NSOperationQueue. Whenever it is executed, I get the following error message: Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSGenericException', reason: '-[UIPopoverController dealloc] reached while popover is still visible.' • How can I keep curl output out of mail from my cronjob?

  I have written a Perl script that runs as a daily crontab job that uploads files to Amazon S3 via CURL. I want the output of the cron job emailed to me which works fine but I don't want that email to include messages related to the CURL upload (only those message my script is outputting). • Self organizing layouts

  Quite a while ago i was more in websites building then i am now. In my time there where huge debates about what to use; tables or pure CSS alternatives. I went out of the webdesigning, but now an old question re-surfaces. What i would like to create is a web page design that depending on screensize, would self organize the page into columns, so that for example on a PDA it would show 1 column On an old computer monitor, it would show 2 colomns, and on a widescreen laptop it would show 3 columns. I forgot how this was called and how it was done in the past, it had to do with XML and storing data seperate from design (if i remember well), perhaps these days better methods exist to do that, does this, anyone ring this a bell ? Also i note a lot is possible with Jquery and and brouwser depending webkits. But i need to make sure that it would run on all (modern) brouwsers : Iexplorer, Firefox, chrome And Jquery is nice too, but i am kinda woried that some day one of these brouwser vendors decides that jscript like java isnt enabled by default (or is that very unlikely ?)11 Perhaps someone can point me to a method that is the prefered way to do this.

  I am trying to do a CORS call to a WCF service endpoint hosted on IIS7.5. I have configured custom headers in IIS. • Evaluate an expression tree

  Hi, This project that I'm working on requires that an expression tree be constructed from a string of single digit operands and operators both represented as type char. I did the implmentation and the program up to that point works fine. I'm able to print out the inorder, preorder and postorder traversals in the correct way. The last part calls for evaulating the expression tree. The parameters are an expression tree "t" and its root "root". The expression tree is ((3+2)+(6+2)) which is equal to 13. Instead I get 11 as the answer. Clearly I'm missing something here and I've done everything short of bashing my head against the desk. I would greatly appreciate it if someone can point me in the right direction. • How to test a Grails Service that utilizes a criteria query (with spock)?

That method mainly just returns the results of a criteria query for which I want to test if it returns the one result or not (depending on what is queried for). The problem is, that I am unaware of how to right the corresponding test correctly. I am trying to accomplish it via spock, but doing the same with any other way of testing also fails.
