  • What would be the total expenses of running an in-home web server?

    I have several hosting accounts with companies, and plan to keep them. However, I would like to try my hand at creating my own home web-server, both for fun and for the learning experience. I would like to know the expenses involved, including: electricity costs (greater than light bulb?) internet costs (will I have to upgrade my internet? Or is 3-5Mbps upload speed fine for a web server with medium amount of traffic? Would I have to get a separate internet connection?) other unknown expenses Consider that I will configure the web server myself, so that is not an expense. Also consider that I already have a computer (year-old Dell laptop, 15R) to use to be dedicated as the web server.

  • HP Envy screen brightness .. stuck

    once in a while, the screen brightness stops responding to any reason, and stays on full brightness.. for those of you that have HP Envy, you know what this means... battery suicide. the FN+* controls don't work. i also tried going in to power settings and adjusting all modes brightness to low wend of spectrum, after saving, it has no effect.. i suppose i could try rebooting as i always just put my laptop to sleep :/ anyone came across this ?

    I am moving data from an almost dead HDD to an external USB drive using linux , because for some reason Windows cannot see the data. I want to copy a large amount of data over from the HDD to the USB drive with integrity checking. I thought about copying everything over and then checking with md5summer but this would take a reaally long time because its a lot of data and this is not a very powerful PC. What tool can use to do this on Linux?

  • Live Mesh starts exactly once on fresh Win7 Ultimate installation

    I did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ulimate 64-bit on a formatted drive on a refurbed Lenovo PC, applied all 102 (!) windows updates, windows seems to be working fine. No quirks installing, no apps, no junkware, just straight, legal, Win7 Ultimate right from an unopened 2009 Microsoft box. Ok, breathe sigh -- Install Live Mesh (no messenger, no mail, no writer, no photo, none of the rest of the Windows Live freeware). Set up my shares, let it run overnight. watch MOE.exe in the Task-Manager perf pane to make sure it's all settled down. reboot. Ok, check that MOE is running and files are getting updated properly from other machines in the mesh. Great. HOWEVER -- when I try to launch Windows Live Mesh app from the Start jewel, I get a brief hourglass, then nothing. Reboot. Same story. result -- the shares I already posted seem to be synching properly, but I can't run the app, so I can't add and delete shares. The background process MOE seems to run, but I can't get the app going. btw, the reason I did this fresh install is I had exactly the same experience running Vista, so I wiped the machine hoping it would solve this nasty problem. Imagine my surprise! Will be grateful for clues, advice, etc, please & thanks!

  • Can't Type Tilde character in Mac OS X

    Hi this is a new problem that I did not have a few weeks ago. I have a Logitech Illuminated Keyboard running on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). The problem is that I cannot type a tilde. Instead when I press the tilde I get this character: §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ I cannot for the life of me figure this out, except that I vaguely remember I can asked to redetect the Mac keyboard layout for this keyboard and I think i chose the wrong one. Now I get this weird character when pressing tilde. How can I fix this? Or how can I redetect this keyboard layout? Thanks.

  • Changing ID3 tags of music in iTunes with read-only attributes

    When I add an mp3 file with read-only attributes to iTunes, iTunes does not allow me to change the file's ID3 tags or delete the file later. Removing the read-only attributes after adding the file doesn't help. If I go to the source file and delete it manually, it shows up as "missing file" with a ! sign prefixed to it in the program, and it still can't be deleted. How can I get around this? I just want to change the ID3 tags.

  • If spambots are filling out forms on my website, should I mark the mail as spam?

    Apparently spambots have discovered the contact forms my website. I'm considering adding a CAPTCHA, but in the meantime I've been getting dozens of completed website forms in my Gmail account each day. I know I can configure a filter to always allow e-mails from my website to be delivered (i.e., "never send to spam"), but I'm wondering whether there are also larger implications. At first, I was marking the spam forms as spam because I figured it would block the sender's e-mail address from getting through again. But since then, I've given it some more thought. I know many spam filters use Bayesian filters and other techniques to identify spam based on its content. If I mark all these e-mails as spam, will legitimate e-mails from my website be marked as spam? Even if I stop marking the messages as spam, I can see another potential problem. My form is pretty standard (in fact, it's probably very similar to other online forms). If I mark my spambot-submitted website forms as spam, will Gmail begin to mark other people's similar-looking messages as spam?

  • How can I disable the CTRL-ALT-DEL key combination completely on XP/Vista/7?

    I have been googling extensively to figure this out, and nobody seems to be able to give a direct answer. Let me start by saying that I'm NOT talking about requiring CTRL-ALT-DEL to enter logon information. I'm working on a golf simulator program which is used at golf centers. I need the ability to completely disable the CTRL-ALT-DEL key sequence so that the golf center customers can't get out of the program and access the computer at all. I realize there are other key combinations that need to be handled as well, we already have this entire feature working in XP, but we're going to be switching to Windows 7 soon, and CTRL-ALT-DEL is the only one that doesn't seem to work in Win7. I'd really like an all-around solution if at all possible. This same program may also be installed on a client's personal computer for an in-home golf simulator, but the computers that really need this feature (golf center computers) are provided to the golf center by us, so would the best option be to write a new shell? I don't know anything about that at all, other than others that suggest writing a new shell for kiosk mode. I'd really like a simpler option, like modifying the registry in some way. I have heard that you can remove some buttons from the menu screen that pops up, but unless I can remove pretty much all of them (including the shutdown/restart button in the bottom-right corner), this won't be enough of a solution for me. Now it isn't working, and I hope if I uninstall all other things and start a clean install again it will.     Hi guys, I hope I am in the right forum for this question. I love foobar2000 on windows and have 2 custom Tags for my mp3s Rate and mood. Now I have to use a Mac to play my music and emulating foobar won't work, because foobar has to recreate its database every time it starts... ans thats about 2h of hahsing - no good. So is there any way to read out, order by and write custom tags with iTunes or any other, if possible free, mac app? Thanks for your answers.

    When pressing w or e in sentences with accents (written in my native language), such as the first one (marked **) here: **Éj-mélybol fölzengo** - csing-ling-ling - száncsengo. Száncsengo - csing-ling-ling - tél csendjén halkan ring. [1] the characters o, ö, among others [2], make my gVim think they are word-ends so it stops on them (in Normal mode). gVim stops on the positions marked with _ where it shouldn't: Éj-mélyb_ol f_ölzeng_o. I would like to set gVim so it properly handle words even when containing accents and other local characters. But where do I set this? I use it on Win32, vim v 7.3.46.   • How to SSH into Red Hat Linux (virtual box guest) from Windows 7 (host)?

    I have RHEL running in Virtual Box and my native OS is Win 7. From a purely educational standpoint, I want to be able to access RHEL from Win 7 over SSH. I download putty but don;t know how to make it do what I want. Ideally, I would like to use the linux command prompt at a minimum and preferably access the GUI apps also. IS this possible?   • How can I adapt a Dell 2001FP stand for use on newer Dell monitors?

    I find myself really disappointed with how little vertical adjustment newer Dell LCD's have. I retiring a malfunctioning Dell 2001FP. The stand on the 2001FP allows over 6 inches of vertical adjustment. Compare this to my newer monitors, a 2005FP and a SW22209, both of which allow at most 2 inches of vertical adjustment. So while the Dell 2001FP monitor is shot, the stand is not. Is there anyway to fit the stand onto the SW2209 or the 2005FP? The 2001FP stand seems to have an odd plate with three tabs on the top edge. Can I replace this?

  • Connection Issue

    Desktop computer, connected directly into a Comcast modem. Every so often, at seemingly random intervals, my connection will drop. This could be while in the middle of browsing, or when I'm not even at the computer. When the connection drops, the modem still shows 4 green lights. The modem is connected to a splitter (cable and internet in same room), and then directly to the wall. To recover from the problem, I am forced to restart my computer, at which point everything works fine again. I have tried an ipconfig/release and renew, it tells me that it is unable to contact the DHCP server, and thus can't renew. I have updated the NICs driver, no luck. I have changed the ethernet cord, no luck. I have had Comcast replace the modem, no luck. The only thing I can think of that hasn't been replaced is the cords connecting the modem to the wall and the splitter. Can anyone think of anything else I may be able to do to isolate what's causing the issue?

    I've read multiple news articles that claim Hotmail offers two-factor authentication. One of the articles describes Hotmail's system, saying ...whenever you go to Hotmail...you can choose to get a single-use code–a string of numbers that will be sent via text message to your phone–to use instead of your password. Is this an accurate description of Hotmail's system? If so, does Hotmail really offer two-factor authentication? If you can use either your password or a single-use code, it seems to me that it does not. Is this system really more secure than just having a password? Doesn't this just make an additional "key" available to a hacker? (I must be wrong here, I know the folks at Microsoft are much smarter than I am).

  • Error installing Arch Linux

    So, I am trying to install Arch Linux on my Acer Aspire 4830tg, but I keep running into problems. Some background knowledge, I am trying to install Arch off a usb stick and I got the iso image using bittorrent. I am also trying to install it alongside of Windows 8 (which is already installed). So when I boot into Arch linux I get this error: :: Mounting '/dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201212' to 'run/archiso/bootmnt' Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201212 ... ERROR: '/dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201212' device did not show up after 30 seconds... Falling back to interactive prompt You can try to fix the problem manually, log out when you are finished sh: can't access tty; job control turned off I know that it will work if I run it on a virtual machine but whenever I try to install it on my laptop I keep getting this error. And since you can't register for the Arch forums without a Arch terminal to run their captcha command I can't ask this on their forums.

  • excel 2010 format and input issue

    I have completed a very complex Excel spreadsheet with a lot of equations, except ... I forgot to include September I have Jan through Dec, all the months, except the calculations for September. Of course all the equations are currently perfect for the data that's here. How do I add a whole new column without ruining the previous equations? PS: tomorrow is my holidays and I have to go to work to finish this table, so bad. would really appreciate some kind expertise :) cheers craig.
