• Win7 Hangs During App Install/Upgrade/Uninstall

  I have a custom built PC that intermittently hangs when installing, uninstalling, or upgrading applications. Technical Specs ASUS P5E w/ WiFi Motherboard Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 Processor 4x 2GB G.Skill DDR2 800 SDRAM ASUS EAH2900XT / Radeon HD 2900XT 512MB Video Card Under normal operation the machine runs reliably, even under heavy load, such as video transcoding. The temperature never gets anywhere near where I would worry about it. However, the machine regularly hangs (complete lockup, no response to keyboard or mouse, no activity on-screen) when either installing a new application, uninstalling an existing application, or applying patches to existing applications or the OS. This is extremely frustrating as this machine is primarily used as a HTPC. Several apps are configured for automatic updates, and these updates sometimes cause the machine to lockup while we are watching content on the PC. In previously investigating this issue, I found one likely problem could be my Logitech Webcam. The Logitech software has a bug that leaves an entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Control\SessionManager\PendingFileRenameOperations Which references the Temp directory. My registry contained this error, so I uninstalled the webcam software and deleted this registry key value. Unfortunately, the machine will still intermittently hang. I've noticed that the hangs always happen when an install/upgrade/uninstall requires elevated privileges (presumably to modify the registry). I can typically get at least one install/upgrade/uninstall to complete after a reboot, but after that it is a game of russian roulette to see if the operation will succeed or hang the machine. The event log is not helpful, as log messages end at the time of the hang, with no record of a warning or error. My only recourse when the machine hangs in this way is to perform a hard reset/power cycle. Any tips on how to further debug this issue are greatly appreciated.

• Vista: window focus problem

  Sorry for the vague title but this one is hard to explain so bear with me please. I'm using Windows Vista at work for web development and sometimes when I Click or Alt-Tab to background window, the window will get focus but it will not be brought to the front. In order to bring the window to the front, I have to click on the applications border (when the resize cursor appears) and the window will then jump to the front. I've had this problem for about a year now and it happens at least a dozen times a day, but it doesn't do this all the time - seems random. I hope I have explained the issue fully (and you've understood it) and would appreciate any constructive answers or comments to solve this problem. Example: If I Alt-Tab from Google Chrome to Notepad and this problem randomly occurs, Google Chrome will remain in front of Notepad, however, I will be able to type text into Notepad while the window is behind Google Chrome. Clicking on Notepad's content area will not bring it to the front but clicking it's window border will. I'm starting to believe that this could be a bug in Google Chrome so I'll continue to watch if this between other applications.

• grub refuses to install to raid array

  I have a software raid 0 setup with dual booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04. The GRUB bootloader that is already on the hard drive seems to work fine. However, since the latest package update for grub, it refuses to install the new version to the hard disk. grub-install throws the following error: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/mapper/< raid name_RAID0p9. Check your device.map. Auto-detection of a filesystem of /dev/mapper/< raid name_RAID0p9 failed. Try with --recheck. If the problem persists please report this together with the output of "/usr/sbin/grub-probe --device-map="/boot/grub/device.map" --target=fs -v /boot/grub" to < [email protected] update-grub pops the same "/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/mapper/< raid name_RAID0p9. Check your device.map." every alternate line. I don't understand what exactly is going on. I'm afraid to reinstall the grub package because it might mess up the boot, which currently works fine. Is it safe to just ignore this?

• Win 7 firewall won't turn on, nor the McAfee firewall. Hit by "Win 7 Anti-virus 2012" trojan. Removed, but a downed firewall is a lasting legacy

  I caught the Trojan right away, I think, but both my McAfee & Win 7 (x64) firewalls are not able to be engaged/turned on now. MS Error Code 0x80070424 when attempting to turn on Win 7 firewall. No viruses. Swept it with McAfee AV, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Microsoft malware removal tools. Followed Microsoft's three courses of alternative actions they posted for instructions for getting the Win 7 firewall back up and on. Nothing. Same error code. The post just said see MS support if those fixes failed. So I removed McAfee altogether. Still Win 7 (professional version) firewall won't come on; and clean of detectable bugs. And I'm fully updated with MS Windows 7 updates as well, which is no longer automatic, that too a legacy of the trojan bug I think. Any thoughts on how to get the Win 7 firewall operational??? And auto updating reengaged?

• Is it possible to record a screen-video from a VNC server?

  I have a computer that's running VNC server. I would like to record a video of what's going on on this computer, if possible without installing additional software on that computer. Is there a program that can connect to the VNC server port and instead of displaying the screen save it to an (e.g. AVI) video file? Background: One of our customers sometimes has problems with the software he bought from us when he's performing a complex procedure. To help him, we offered that someone (a service technician or programmer) watches what he's doing during that procedure to find out if he's doing something wrong or if there's a bug in the software. Currently, this is done live via VNC. That has a few disadvantages: The service technician has to be in the office at the time. As the customers are in different time zones, that can be in the middle of the night. If the service technician forgets something or doesn't notice something, it's lost. There's no way to see what happened again. Only a single computer can be watched by one service technician at a time. I know I could install normal screen-grab software on the computer, but we're talking about an embedded system with limited RAM, CPU, HDD space, so installing something new is not an easy decision. And VNC is already there. I could of course open a VNC client on some office PC and capture that PC's screen, but I can only record one remote computer that way. I often have to watch up to 8 screens in parallel. (And I don't think that screen-grabbing VNC would improve image quality, either.)

• How to get just value from database query in Excel?

  I'm creating a spreadsheet as a collection point of information from a number of MS Access databases. I will run a query on each database to get a count of records in a particular table. Each database has the same structure but different content as they are used in different situations. So the query returns a single value, rec_count. I've figured out how to create that query, save it and then use it as the data source. So far so good. The problem is that Excel treats the query results as a table. So instead of getting just the single value the query returns, I also get the field name. Thus the result takes up two cells instead of one. When linking in the data source, I only see Table, PivotTable Report and PivotChart as options for viewing the data. I don't want any of those. I just want the single value without any formatting, column headers, etc. Is there a way to do this is Excel 2007?

• Compatibility of Fedora install on a Hybrid drive

  I recently bought un ultrabook with a 500gb/32gb sdd hdd hybrid drive, and I'm having trouble replacing windows on it with fedora seventeen. it errors out saying there was an unhandled exception. Is linux compatible with hybrid drives? or can the operating system on a hybrid drive not be replaced? Edit: here are the steps I select special storage devices because it ignores my hard drives otherwise at this point i get the message: "Disk contains bios raid meta data, disk sda will be ignored" I can pick a hostname, select my timezone and set a password at the install type screen, no matter what I select (use all free space, replace linux systems, create custom partition etc..) once I click next, it says "an unhandled exception" has occured. and I can no longer proceed with installation. • 750Gig Hard Drive shows full with only 315Gigs used

  I have a Win7 laptop with a 750Gig C: drive. It came partitioned with 714Gig usable from manufacturer. I installed programs, music files, etc up to 285 gigs. As of a few weeks ago it showed 285 Gigs. Two weeks of house guests later and it shows HD is full. I deleted some files but it still shows 652 Gigs on this drive while there are only 285 Gigs on drive. Relevant details: I am Administrator on laptop and have fair knowledge of what I am doing. I did not restore from backup, restore from mirror, upgrade HD's or anything else that would have touched the partition structure. Just daily use as imaging machine and web. I have checked partitions under disk administrator - no change, still partitioned with 714Gigs usable. Have looked through computer C drive by hand showing Hidden files and folders - no change. I have used JDisk Report to double check - it shows I have only 285 Gigs on C drive. I triple checked with TreeSize run as Administrator and it also shows 285 Gigs on C drive - yet Windows 7 still shows almost full. I used Windows 7 Utilities to Check for Disk Errors, and Defragged the drive. No errors shown and no change after Defrag.

• All computers on network get stuck waiting for some sites indefinetely

  This happens across three computers, running windows 7 and Ubuntu, firefox, opera, and chrome (all latest versions). I am connected to the internet through a Verizon wireless usb modem. When I try to open some web pages they will never finish loading (and usually never even show anything). The status bar at the bottom of the browser will display "Waiting for X" The servers it gets stuck on include: platform.twitter.com s7.addthis.com connect.facebook.net ajax.googleapis.com 2mdn.net Ive been getting away with just blocking them in AdBlock up until now, however the last two have been causing problems. There are some sites which require googleapis.com to load correctly, and some that wont ever load unless its blocked. eBay requires access to 2mdn.net to load pictures. On top of this its getting really annoying having to update AdBlock across all these computers whenever a new site pops up. I'm hoping there's some easier way to fix this? The different sites causing the freeze indicate to me that it's either a problem on my end (somehow?) or some server side software that got updated with a new bug?

• credit or minclass does not work well with pam_cracklib.so in common-password (opeSuSe 11.3)

  I'm trying to implement password complexities on my pdc. It's a samba PDC with openLDAP backend. I tried cracklib-check but it looks like that I should have a decent and localize version of password library since the library out there usually comes in english. I also have another consideration that we will allow users to use any kind of password - even though it's dictionary based - as long as their passwords integrated with low/upper alphabet, digits, and other characters such as '$' or '_' (pam_cracklib.so calls them as classes). So here is my /etc/pam.d/common-password: #password requisite pam_pwcheck.so nullok cracklib password requisite pam_cracklib.so minclass=4 reject_username ##password requisite pam_cracklib.so \ ## dcredit=-1 ucredit=-1 lcredit=-1 ocredit=-1 reject_username password optional pam_gnome_keyring.so use_autht_ok password required pam_unix2.so use_authtok nullok The first commented line (with #) was the default configuration of openSuse 11.3. The 2nd/3rd (with leading ##) is another configuration I use when minclass=4 line is commented out. By the way, I have 'check password script' = /usr/local/sbin/crackcheck -d /usr/share/cracklib/pw_dict and passdb backend = ldapsam:ldap://127.0.0.1 parameters in smb.conf and cracklib-check works fine too. So here is the test I conduct. I logon to windows and then change my password. Sometimes it works fine that it trows error message - which what I wanted, but simple password with only lower alphabets can pass windows change password. Maybe I should make a new library which incorporates local vocabularies, but a guy out there (raise your hand please if you read this :) ) also experienced the same trouble with english word.   We are using ActiveMQ 5.6.0 with KahaDB. Only when we manually purged a route, messages were starting to be delivered again. So we need to ensure, that the KahaDB log size always stays below the temp usage, right? And that delivery was not picked up after fixing that is a bug or are there any other steps to be taken?

• Windows 7 Taskbar resets on every login

  I like to reorder my Taskbar a bit, other than the Windows 7 default is. I use two "rows", the lower is for quicklaunch and other toolbars: This works perfectly, as long as I don't log off from the computer. Every time I log in, Windows 7 has messed up/reset the toolbar positions like this: So I have to drag them into position again and again, every morning. Fixing the taskbar positions won't help, I tried to google for the problem but it does not seem to be very common. Does anyone recognize that problem and has a solution? Update: This is not the AutoLogon bug. AutoLogon is off. We have installed Novell at our company, and it does not matter wether I log directly onto the Novell network or only to the computer first and to Novell later. Update2: I get the same issue when I logon without Novell, i.e. when I log on only to the computer. When I boot in safe mode, the taskbar looks essentially the same: Update3: KB979155 says it's "not applicable to my system". Creating a neew user is not an option since I don't have the admin privileges to do that - I have almost any other local admin privileges, though.

• Cant configure DNS properly on centos

  I am on a VPS i must manage my own. I have network problems because in the last days many of my users report they cant enter my site from my domain and seems like Google and Facebook cant either (this never happened before). However i can enter my site without problems and so many other people as well. So i tested by making a php include like this <?php include 'http://mysite.com/somepage.php'; ?> and i get this error: Warning: include(): php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed: Name or service not known in I even tried by including content from yahoo.com or facebook and didnt work either. However the includes will work if i use IPs instead of domains. Do i have a DNS problem or something? What can i do to fix it? • Files showing in smbclient but not smbmount

  I have a samba folder that I try and access through smbclient, and I can browse it just fine. However, mounting it through smbmount, all the folders under the share are empty. I can list the folders directly under the share fine, but they all appear empty. smbclient: # smbclient //server/share -U username -W workgroup password smbmount # sudo smbmount //server/share mntpoint -o user=username,workgroup=workgroup,password=password I have also tried with domain=workgroup instead of workgroup, both give the same result. No error messages, everything mounts fine, but all the folders under mntpoint are empty, despite the same folders being non-empty when using smbclient. Are these using different libraries? How can I debug the error? Additionally, if I try to mount //server/share/folder, doing an ls results in a segmentation fault. Using dmesg I find: kernel BUG at /build/buildd/linux-2.6.28/fs/cifs/cifs_dfs_ref.c:315! • Facter - custom fact, returns empty data set when invoked by Puppet agent

  According to this puppet labs article, I can create custom facts from shell scripts. I have created a bash script that returns a single fact, it is packaged in a modules facts.d directory. The module is included on the target system via an ENC class. When invoked by the puppet agent on the target it returns an empty set, when run by hand on the agent it correctly returns the fact. The script has execute permission on the master, but does not have it on the agent. I saw a bug report related to permissions and file types, but that was windows and supposed to be fixed in puppet version 3. What am I doing wrong?   OS: Ubuntu 10.04 Logging daemon: rsyslog For some reason i'm not getting any iptables logs, even thought i don't look through them very often i'd still like to get it working for the sake of it working XD Here is my /etc/ryslog.d/iptables.conf :msg, contains, "[IPTABLES]" -/var/log/iptables.log & ~ My iptables logging prefix is "[IPTABLES]" followed by whatever else (example [IPTABLES] Denied xyz) the /var/log/iptables.log file is being created, however its not getting any entries. I can see the logging entries in dmesg but not in syslog or messages. Whats going on? • Recovering data from an external hard drive

  I have a WD Elements 2GB hard drive (formatted NTFS). I accidentally kicked out the USB cable while writing data to the disk, and now I can't access most of the data. Although this was ostensibly my backup drive, there is a great deal of important material on there which was only on there. I realise how idiotic this makes me. (So, formatting is not an option.) Things I've tried/information I've gathered: Windows Explorer will recognise the drive itself. However, it will not access most directories therein (and will sometimes crash when exploring). I can access all of the directories through the command line, but the dir command will often report that it can't read any files in most of the directories. The situation was similar when I hooked it up to an Ubuntu machine: the file explorer crashed, but I could access directories - but not files in those directories - via terminal commands. Several files I tried to copy out either resulted in an I/O error being reported or resulted in the command line crashing. The Disk Management utility on Windows reports a healthy disk formatted as NTFS and not RAW. It also indicates the correct amount of space used up and its capacity (so it seems that the files are not deleted). I've tried to run chkdsk, but that hangs on Step 2 (checking indexes) at 74%. Step 1 reported no bad sectors. I tried Recuva, but that didn't seem to work (stalled at 0% for half an hour). I should also note that the disk doesn't seem to be spinning smoothly; it seems to be chopping back, like it's reading the same sector over and over again. I noticed this after I kicked out the cable. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Update: It would seem the problem has taken a turn for the worse. The external hard drive now shows up on my computer as a local disk and is not mountable by Linux.

• How to add a writable folder to the PHP document root on linux

  We are building an example bash script for our PHP TestCoverage Tool use on Linux. The development environment is Ubuntu 12.04_1 but we intend to have the linux example work across as many linux versions as possible without modification. The example linux script requires a variable be set to the PHP Document Root path and by default uses a small PHP example source to show the user how our GUI and text report shows the covered and uncovered PHP code areas. The linux script is also intended to be easily alterable by the user to automate the TestCoverage display of users PHP code. The problem we are having with Ubuntu 12.04 (any linux?) is that the PHP Apache2 document root is defined in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default as /var/www and /var/www is defaulted with "drwxr-xr-x" read only access. So in order to add our own folder as /var/www/SDTestCoverage we must change /var/www to "drwxrwxrwx" read-write access. So it seems our script (at least on Ubuntu) will need to ... 1. acquire and save the /var/www permissions then do .. 2. sudo chmod 777 /var/www (to make writable) 3. mkdir -p /var/www/SDTestCoverage (create our folder under the document root) 4. sudo chmod 777 /var/www/SDTestCoverage (make our subfolder writable) 5. and finally restore /var/www permissions Thanks and our Questions are .. 1. Is this the standard way (using Ubuntu) one adds a writable folder under the PHP Document Root? 2. Is this the most general purpose way one adds a writable folder under the PHP Document Root on other versions of Linux?

• How to find what files / directories are not copied yet?

  Hi all, I found the following 'nice' situation: An archive of few disks (actually three disks) which has a bunch of photos (more or less) organized. Well, this is good. A big disk shared on a network which has a bunch of photos which has another folder structure (even if is somewhat recognizable for a human being) than the archive described above, but some of the files on this big network share are the same with the files from the archive. Well, this is bad. What we need is to move the different (new) files from the network share in the archive (perhaps we'll use for this a new disk added to archive). The program that we need is different from a regular File Duplicate Finder program because usually the File Duplicate Finder finds the duplicates from all sources comparing each file with another. We want to find the differences between the two sources. It is fine for us to have a report generated in text file which after this we'll use to do our move. A Windows solution will be preferred. Any ideas? TIA

• Repair Windows 2008 boot

  I have been caught in a loop where I can't boot up Windows Server 2008. When the OS starts to boot I am presented two options: Launch Startup Repair (recommended) Start Windows Normally No matter what option is chosen I end up with a black screen stating "Windows is loading files..." which takes approx 15 minutes until "System Recovery" is started. I try to run the "Startup Repair" but it reports the following error: Problem Event Name: StartupRepairOffline Problem Signature 01: 0.0.0.0 Problem Signature 02: 0.0.0.0 Problem Signature 03: unknown OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1 Locale ID: 1033 Actually no matter what other options I would try in the System Recovery they would also report some kind of error. Some other logging I have been able to extract: Diagnosis and repair details: Number of repair attempts: 1 Session details System Disk = Windows directory = AutoChk Run = 0 Number of root causes = 1 Test Performed: Name: System disk test Result: Completed successfully. Error code = 0x0 Root cause found: A hard disk could not be found. If a hard disk is installed, it is not responding. So it is actually stating that Harddisk could not be found... which to me seems to be a bit contradictious since the System Recovery just loaded all files from the hard disk it now states it cannot find. Any ideas on what other options I have?

• PHP potential issues with compiling 5.3.8 extensions against RHEL 6 / CentOS 6 PHP 5.3.3 package

  I'm working on getting a Red Hat 6 LAMP server going and while the PHP that comes with it has many extensions we use, it doesn't have all of them. To solve this, I was thinking about either compiling the PHP extensions which come in the ext folder of the downloadable source code of PHP 5.3.3 from php.net same as #1, but using the extensions from the latest PHP version (currently 5.3.8). Do #1 but manually decide which updates to backport from the latest version of the PHP extensions into the older version and then compile the backported result A drawback to #1 is that security and bug fixes come out which we wouldn't be able to take advantage of. A drawback to #3 is that it might be a lot of work Does anyone know what the drawbacks to #2 are? I don't want to go down that route if it might result in some unexpected negative outcomes. Also, are there any other drawbacks to the other options or a better way to go altogether? I want to use the PHP 5.3.3 which comes with the Linux distro because I don't want us to get to a place again where we are forced to upgrade to a new version of PHP to stay on top of security updates like from PHP 5.2.x to 5.3.x and there be backwards incompatible changes (this is the situation we're in now with PHP 5.2.x no longer being supported).

• Terminal Server CPU usage at 100%

  I'm running a terminal server with around 50-60 users,and every so often the server will go from 40% usage to 100%. I took a closer look an it seems every time this happens, a different user or two seem to be caught in a loop and end up using < 30% where the rest of the users only use a maximum of 5%. The company behind the software we use clame it's due to the servers inadequate hardware (It's a VM system running on a dual - quad core setup) which to me sounds like BS! I'm fairly new to this level of IT so if I misspoke I apologize. I have no way to prove it but I believe adding more raw hardware power wont do me any good as this to me seems like a bug in their software, and it will suck up as much ( or little) CPU as it's given. The VM in question has 4 vCPU cores and 12 GB RAM available, and is running Windows Server 2008, 64-bit Thanks in advance for your help!
