Pass MSBuild condition to library project

I have tried several solutions for this problem. Enough to know I do not know enough about MSBuild to do this elegantly but I feel like there should be a method. I have a set of libraries for working with .net projects. A few of the projects utilize System.Web.Mvc - which recently released Version 2 - and we are looking forward to the upgrade. Currently sites which reference this library reference it directly by the project(csproj) on the developer's computer - not a built version of the library so that changes and source code case easily be viewed when dealing code from this library. This works quite well and would prefer to not have to switch to binary references (but will if this is the only solution). The problem I have is that because of some of the functionality that was added onto the MVC1 based library (view engines, model binders etc) several of the sites reliant on these libraries need to stay on MVC1 until we have full evaluated and tested them on MVC2. I would prefer to not have to fork or have two copies on each dev machine. How can a wix custom action dll call be made to use the debug runtime via a merge module?

I'm trying to create a debug build with a corresponding debug installer for our product. I'm new to Wix so please forgive any naivety contained herein. The debug Dlls in my project are dependent on both the VS2008 and the VS2008SP1 debug runtimes. I never really understood: what is Application Binary Interface (ABI)?

I never clearly understood what is an ABI. I'm sorry for such a lengthy question. I just want to clearly understand things. Please don't point me to wiki article, If could understand it, I wouldn't be here posting such a lengthy post. This is my mindset about different interfaces: TV remote is an interface between user and TV. It is an existing entity but useless (doesn't provide any functionality) by itself. All the functionality for each of those buttons on the remote is implemented in the Television set. Interface: It is a "existing entity" layer between the functionality and consumer of that functionality. An, interface by itself is doesn't do anything. It just invokes the functionality lying behind. Now depending on who the user is there are different type of interfaces. Command Line Interface(CLI) commands are the existing entities, consumer is the user and functionality lies behind. functionality: my software functionality which solves some purpose to which we are describing this interface. existing entities: commands consumer: user Graphical User Interface(GUI) window,buttons etc.. are the existing entities, again consumer is the user and functionality lies behind. functionality: my software functionality which solves some purpose to which we are describing this interface. existing entities: window,buttons etc.. consumer: user Application Programming Interface(API) functions or to be more correct, interfaces (in interfaced based programming) are the existing entities, consumer here is another program not a user. and again functionality lies behind this layer. functionality: my software functionality which solves some purpose to which we are describing this interface. existing entities: functions, Interfaces(array of functions). consumer: another program/application. Who needs these details? Please don't say, OS. I know assembly programming. I know how linking & loading works. I know what exactly happens inside. Where did C++ name mangling come in between? I thought we are talking at the binary level. Where did languages come in between? anyway, I've downloaded the [PDF] System V Application Binary Interface Edition 4.1 (1997-03-18) to see what exactly it contains. Well, most of it didn't make any sense. Why does it contain 2 chapters (4th & 5th) which describe the ELF file format.Infact, these are the only 2 significant chapters that specification. Rest of all the chapters "Processor Specific". Anyway, I thought that it is completely different topic. Please don't say that ELF file format specs are the ABI. It doesn't qualify to be Interface according to the definition. I know, since we are talking at such low level it must be very specific. But I'm not sure how is it "Instruction Set Architecture(ISA)" specific? Where can I find MS Window's ABI? So, these are the major queries that are bugging me.

android Emulator always stop at "waiting for Home..."

hi,there, I freshed install Eclipse, jdk, android sdk 1.5 in winxp. but when I run the "hello world" app, the emulator always stop at "andorid" loading message. In eclipse console, it shows "waiting for HOME..." and in DDMS LogCat, it shows following msg: there are some error and warning. So, what's wrong with my case? ASR / SNMP on Exadata

Recently I worked with ASR on Exadata for multiple customers. ASR is a great functionality that enables your 'systems' to alert Oracle when hardware failures occur. Sun hardware is using ASM for sometime and since 2009/2010 this is also available for Exadata. My goal is not to re-write the documentation so for general information I like to refer to this link. So, where is this note about ? Well, it is about two things I experienced around setting up ASR. I like to provide my experience so others can be successful with ASR fast as well. (It is however expected that things will be updated in the latest documentation.) First, imagine yourself configuring SNMP traps to be sent to ASR. In this situation be sure to not erase any existing SNMP Subscribers settings for example the subscription to Enterprise Manager Grid Control or whatever you already subscribed for. So, when you have documentation stating to execute "cellcli -e alter cell snmpSubscriber=(host=, port=)" be sure to add existing snmpSubscribers when they exist. The syntax allows this: snmpSubscriber= ((host=host [,port=port] [,community=community][,type=ASR]) [,(host=host[,port=port][,community=community][,type=ASR])...) Second, when configuring SnmpSubscribers using DCLI you have to work with a slash to escape the brackets. Be sure to verify your SNMP settings after setting them because you might end up with a bracket in the 'asrs.state' file stating 'public\' in stead of 'public'. Oracle WebCenter Portal: Pagelet Producer – What’s New in 11.1.1.6.0 Release

Igor Plyakov, Sr. Principal Product Marketing Manager is back to share what's new in Oracle WebCenter Portal: Pagelet Producer. In February 2012 Oracle released 11g Release 1 (11.1.1.6.0) for WebCenter Portal. Pagelet Producer (aka Ensemble) that came out with this release added support for several new capabilities that are described in this post. As of 11.1.1.5.0 release the Pagelet Producer can expose WSRP and JPDK portlets as pagelets that can then be consumed in any portal or any third-party application that does not have a WSRP consumer. Now Pagelet Producer team is working on simplifying use of pagelets in WebCenter Sites. To expose WSRP portlets a new Producer should be registered with Pagelet Producer which can be done using Enterprise Manager, WLST or the Pagelet Producer Administration Console (for details see Section 25.9 of Administrator’s Guide for Oracle WebCenter Portal). If the producer requires authentication, Pagelet Producer allows you to select and use one of standard WSS token profiles. After registration is finished a new resource is created and automatically populated with pagelets that represent the portlets associated with the WSRP endpoint. For 11.1.1.6.0 release we completed extensive testing of consuming all WebCenter Services that are exposed as WSRP portlets by E2.0 Producer and delivery them as pagelets to WebCenter Interaction portal. In Pagelet Producer 11.1.1.6.0 release we added OpenSocial container that allows consuming gadgets from other OpenSocial containers, e.g. iGoogle, and expose them as pagelets. You can also use Pagelet Producer to host OpenSocial gadgets that could leverage OpenSocial APIs that it supports – People, Activities, Appdata and Pub-Sub features. Note that People and Activities expose the People Connections and Activity Stream from WebCenter Portal, i.e. to use these features Pagelet Producer requires connection to WebCenter Portal schema. Pub-Sub allows leveraging OpenAJAX Hub API for inter-gadget communication. In addition to these major new additions in Pagelet Producer 11.1.1.6.0 release we also extended several functional modules: The Clipping module was extended to support clipping of multiple regions on web resource page and then re-assembly of these separately clipped regions into a single pagelet. The auto-login feature can now be applied to web resources protected with Kerberos authentication; you would find this new functionality handy for consuming SharePoint web parts The logging module now supports full HTTP traffic between the Pagelet Producer and proxied web resource. At last, as the rest of WebCenter Portal stack the Pagelet Producer 11.1.1.6.0 can run on IBM WebSphere Application Server.

Multiple Monitors

At my workplace .Net developers get pretty much the same equipment. A decent Dell workstation / Desktop, mine is a Dell Precision 390. One dual core 2.40 GHz. Eight GB RAM. Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit. Two Dell 20.1 Monitors. I'm happy with this. The machine is about 3 years old but still runs with some decent speed. New developers are getting a Dell workstation with dual quad processors. I just put in a request for myself and three other developers for an upgraded video card and two additional monitors, for a total of four monitors per person. We suggested this card, BTW, mainly for the cost. The move from one monitor to two was fantastic (one might even say life (or work) changing) and truly did increase productivity. Now what about going from 2 monitors to 4? I'm sure the change is not as dramatic as one to two, but I can't help but to think four monitors is better than two. But if four is better than two, should we have asked for six?!? Also what about mixing monitor types? Right now my monitors are the older square type vs. wide-screen. It's been rumored that we will be getting monitors out of current stock and they will be 22 inch wide-screens. I understand this, recession and all. 2-20 inch square monitors with 2-22 inch wide-screen monitors...hmmmmm. I'm thinking I'd rather get 2 additional 17 inch square monitors to put on each side of my 20's. Also, a question was raised about the layout of four monitors. By default, my thought was I'll just put them all on my desk, kinda in a line. I've heard others say they want to stack them in a 2 x 2 square. BTW, loving multi monitor support in Visual studio 2010! I’d love some comments on your experience with one, two, four, or however many monitors from a developers perspective.

Now Click on System, and proceed to assign the correct memory (If you did not before) Note: Enable "Enable IO APIC" if you are planning to assign more than one CPU to the Virtual Machine.Define the processors for the Virtual machine. If you processor is dual core choose 211. Select the video memory amount you want to assign to the Virtual Machine 12. Associated more storage disk to the Virtual machine, if you have more VDI files. (Not our case)The disk must be selected as IDE Primary Master. 13. The embarrassingly obvious about SQL Server CE

I have been working with SQL servers in one form or another for almost two decades now. But I am new to SQL Server Compact Edition. In the past weeks I have been working with SQL Serve CE a lot. The SQL, not a problem, but the engine itself is very new to me. One of the issues I ran into was a simple SQL statement taking excusive amounts of time; by excessive, I mean over one second. I wrote a little code to time the method. Sometimes it took under one second, other times as long as three seconds. –But it was a simple update statement! As embarrassing as it is, why it was slow eluded me. I posted my issue to MSDN and I got a reply from ErikEJ (MS MVP) who runs the blog “Everything SQL Server Compact” . I know little to nothing about SQL Server Compact. This guy is completely obsessed very well versed in CE. If you spend any time in MSDN forums, it seems that this guy single handedly has the answer for every CE question that comes up. Anyway, he said: “Opening a connection to a SQL Server Compact database file is a costly operation, keep one connection open per thread (incl. your UI thread) in your app, the one on the UI thread should live for the duration of your app.” It hit me, all databases have some connection overhead and SQL Server CE is not a database engine running as a service drinking Jolt Cola waiting for someone to talk to him so he can spring into action and show off his quarter-mile sprint capabilities. Imagine if you had to start the SQL Server process every time you needed to make a database connection. Principally, that is what you are doing with SQL Server CE. For someone who has worked with Enterprise Level SQL Servers a lot, I had to come to the mental image that my Open connection to SQL Server CE is basically starting a service, my own private service, and by closing the connection, I am shutting down my little private service. After making the changes in my code, I lost any reservations I had with using CE. At present, my Data Access Layer class has a constructor; in that constructor I open my connection, I also have OpenConnection and CloseConnection methods, I also implemented IDisposable and clean up any connections in Dispose(). I am still finalizing how this assembly will function. – That’s beside the point. All I’m trying to say is: “Opening a connection to a SQL Server Compact database file is a costly operation”

UPK Customer Success Story: The City and County of San Francisco

The value of UPK during an upgrade is a hot topic and was a primary focus during our latest customer roundtable featuring The City and County of San Francisco: Leveraging UPK to Accelerate Your PeopleSoft Upgrade. As the Change Management Analyst for their PeopleSoft 9.0 HCM project (Project eMerge), Jan Crosbie-Taylor provided a unique perspective on how they're utilizing UPK and UPK pre-built content early on to successfully manage change for thousands of city and county employees and retirees as they move to this new release. With the first phase of the project going live next September, it's important to the City and County of San Francisco to 1) ensure that the various constituents are brought along with the project team, and 2) focus on the end user aspects of the implementation, including training. Here are some highlights on how UPK and UPK pre-built content are helping them accomplish this: As a former documentation manager, Jan really appreciates the power of UPK as a single source content creation tool. It saves them time by streamlining the documentation creation process, enabling them to record content once, then repurpose it multiple times. With regard to change management, UPK has enabled them to educate the project team and gain critical buy in and support by familiarizing users with the application early on through User Experience Workshops and by promoting UPK at meetings whenever possible. UPK has helped create awareness for the project, making the project real to users. They are taking advantage of UPK pre-built content to: Educate the project team and subject matter experts on how PeopleSoft 9.0 works as delivered Create a guide/storyboard for their own recording Save time/effort and create consistency by enhancing their recorded content with text and conceptual information from the pre-built content Create PeopleSoft Help for their development databases by publishing and integrating the UPK pre-built content into the application help menu Look ahead to the next release of PeopleTools, comparing the differences to help the team evaluate which version to use with their implemtentation When it comes time for training, they will be utilizing UPK in the classroom, eliminating the time and cost of maintaining training databases. Instructors will be able to carry all training content on a thumb drive, allowing them to easily provide consistent training at their many locations, regardless of the environment. Post go-live, they will deploy the same UPK content to provide just-in-time, in-application support for the entire system via the PeopleSoft Help menu and their PeopleSoft Enterprise Portal. Users will already be comfortable with UPK as a source of help, having been exposed to it during classroom training. They are also using UPK for a non-Oracle application called JobAps, an online job application solution used by many government organizations. Jan found UPK's object recognition to be excellent, yet it's been incredibly easy for her to change text or a field name if needed. Please take time to listen to this recording. Accessing JMX for Oracle WebLogic 11g

In Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4, we use the latest Oracle WebLogic release (11g). The instructions below illustrate a way of allowing a console like jconsole to remotely monitor and manage Oracle WebLogic using the JMX Mbeans. Typically management of Oracle WebLogic is done from Oracle Enterprise Manager or the Oracle Weblogic console application but you can also use JMX. To access the JMX capability for Oracle WebLogic 11g, for an Oracle Utilities Application Framework based product, using a JMX console (such as jconsole) the following process needs to be performed: Enable the JMX Management Server in the Oracle WebLogic console at splapp - Configuration - General - Advanced Settings option. Enable both Compatibility Mbean Server Enabled and Management EJB Enabled (this enables the legacy and new JMX interface). Save the changes This change will require a restart. In the startup of the Oracle WebLogic server in the $SPLSYSTEMLOGS/myserver.log (or %SPLESYSTEMLOGS%\myserver.log on Windows) you will see the BEA-149512 message indicating the Mbean servers have been started. The message will indicate the JMX URL that can be used to access the JMX Mbeans. The URL is in the format: service:jmx:iiop://host:port/jndi/mbeanserver where: host - Oracle WebLogic host name port - Oracle WebLogic port number mbeanserver - Mbean Server to access. Valid Values: weblogic.management.mbeanservers.runtime weblogic.management.mbeanservers.edit weblogic.management.mbeanservers.domainruntime For illustrative purposes we will use the domainruntime Mbean. Ensure that you execute the splenviron[.sh] utility to set the appropriate environment variables for the desired environment. Execute the following jconsole command to initiate the connection to the JMX Mbean server Windows: jconsole -J-Djava.class.path=%JAVA_HOME%\lib\jconsole.jar;%WL_HOME%\server\lib\wljmxclient.jar -J-Djmx.remote.protocol.provider.pkgs=weblogic.management.remote Linux/Unix jconsole -J-Djava.class.path=$JAVA_HOME/lib/jconsole.jar;$WL_HOME/server/lib/wljmxclient.jar -J-Djmx.remote.protocol.provider.pkgs=weblogic.management.remote You will see a New Connection Dialog. Specify the URL from the previous steps into the Remote process (i.,e. service:jmx:iiop...). The credentials are the credentials specified for the Oracle WebLogic console. Sessions at the ACORD LOMA Insurance Forum this week highlighted the need for insurance companies to think creatively and be innovative with their technology in order to adapt to continuously shifting market dynamics and drive business efficiency and agility. LOMA President & CEO Robert Kerzner kicked off the day on Tuesday, citing how the recent downtown and recovery has impacted the insurance industry and the ways that companies are doing business. He encouraged carriers to look for new ways to deliver solutions and offer a better service experience for consumers. ACORD President & CEO Gregory Maciag reinforced Kerzner's remarks, noting how the industry's approach to technology and development of industry standards has evolved over the association's 40-year history and cited how the continued rise of mobile computing will change the way many carriers are doing business today and in the future. Drawing from his own experiences, popular keynote speaker and Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak continued this theme, delving into ways that insurers can unite business with technology. He noted that true innovation in business comes from those who have a passion for what they do. The program evaluation and review technique (PERT) shows relationships between defined tasks in a project without taking into consideration a time line. This chart is an excellent way to identify dependencies of tasks based on other tasks. This chart allows project managers to identify the critical path of a project to minimize any time delays to the project. According to Craig Borysowich in his article “Pros & Cons of the PERT/CPM Method stated the following advantages and disadvantages: “PERT/CPM has the following advantages: A PERT/CPM chart explicitly defines and makes visible dependencies (precedence relationships) between the WBS elements, PERT/CPM facilitates identification of the critical path and makes this visible, PERT/CPM facilitates identification of early start, late start, and slack for each activity, PERT/CPM provides for potentially reduced project duration due to better understanding of dependencies leading to improved overlapping of activities and tasks where feasible. PERT/CPM has the following disadvantages: There can be potentially hundreds or thousands of activities and individual dependency relationships, The network charts tend to be large and unwieldy requiring several pages to print and requiring special size paper, The lack of a timeframe on most PERT/CPM charts makes it harder to show status although colors can help (e.g., specific color for completed nodes), When the PERT/CPM charts become unwieldy, they are no longer used to manage the project.” (Borysowich, 2008) Traditionally PERT charts are used in the initial planning of a project like in a project that is utilizing the waterfall approach. Once the chart was created then project managers could further analyze this data to determine the earliest start time for each stage in the project. This is important because this information can be used to help forecast resource needs during a project and where in the project. However, the agile environment can approach this differently because of their constant need to be in contact with the client and the other stakeholders. The PERT chart can also be used during project iteration to determine what is to be worked on next, such as a prioritized To-Do list a wife would give her husband at the start of a weekend. In my personal opinion, the COTS-centric environment would not really change how a company uses a PERT chart in their day to day work. The only thing I can is that there would be less tasks to include in the chart because the functionally milestones are already completed when the components are purchased. Tom Cruise: Meet Fusion Apps UX and Feel the Speed

Unfortunately, I am old enough to remember, and now to admit that I really loved, the movie Top Gun. You know the one - Tom Cruise, US Navy F-14 ace pilot, Mr Maverick, crisis of confidence, meets woman, etc., etc. Anyway, one of more memorable lines (there were a few) was: "I feel the need, the need for speed." I was reminded of Tom Cruise recently. Paraphrasing a certain Senior Vice President talking about Oracle Fusion Applications and user experience at an all-hands meeting, I heard that: Applications can never be too easy to use. Performance can never be too fast. Developers, assume that your code is always "on". Perfect. You cannot overstate the user experience importance of application speed to users, or at least their perception of speed. We all want that super speed of execution and performance, and increasingly so as enterprise users bring the expectations of consumer IT into the work environment. Sten Vesterli (@stenvesterli), an Oracle Fusion Applications User Experience Advocate, also addressed the speed point artfully at an Oracle Usability Advisory Board meeting in Geneva. Sten asked us that when we next Googled something, to think about the message we see that Google has found hundreds of thousands or millions of results for us in a split second (for example, About 8,340,000 results (0.23 seconds)). Now, how many results can we see and how many can we use immediately? Yet, this simple message communicating the total results available to us works a special magic about speed, delight, and excitement that Google has made its own in the search space. And, guess what? The Oracle Application Development Framework table component relies on a similar "virtual performance boost", says Sten, when it displays the first 50 records in a table, and uses a scrollbar indicating the total size of the data record set. The user scrolls and the application automatically retrieves more records as needed. Application speed and its perception by users is worth bearing in mind the next time you're at a customer site and the IT Department demands that you retrieve every record from the database. Just think of... Dave Ensor: I'll give you all the rows you ask for in one second. If you promise to use them. (Again, hat tip to Sten.) And then maybe think of... Tom Cruise. The Minimalist Approach to Content Governance - Retire Phase

During the Retire Phase our content management team should not have to track down content creators if the Request Phase of this process was completed successfully. The ownership meta data, success criteria and time stamp that was applied to the original content submission will help to manage content at the end of the content life cycle. The Retire Phase will provide the opportunity for us to prune irrelevant content items through archiving or deletion, keeping the content system clear of irrelevant information, streamlining users ability to browse and search for content. 1. Act on Metrics Established during the Request Phase Why - Some information is only relevant for a given amount of time. In Content Platform Migration Strategy - Artifacts vs Perishable Content we examined two content types - Artifacts and Perishable content. Understanding the differences between Artifacts and Perishable content will allow us to explicitly respect their various lifespans. Additionally, some content may have been part of a project that failed to meet the success criteria outlined in the Request Phase. Any content that did not meet the metrics outlined in the Request Phase should be considered for deletion. How - Thankfully by adhering to to The Minimalist Approach to Content Governance our content should have some level of meta data associated with it that will allow us to quickly sort and understand how to deal with it. Content Management Systems like Oracle's Universal Content Management (UCM) natively allow you to create and save advanced searches that can use content meta data like folders, author, expiration date, security settings and custom meta data to pull back listings of content for examination. Additionally, analytics are available for all content items that allow us to determine if the usage is meeting success criteria that may have been previously outlined during the request phase. The lists that are produced from these approaches can be quickly reviewed for each project with the content owners and based on the nature of the content and success criteria undergo archiving or deletion. Impact - Retiring content that is no longer relevant will allow end users to have fast and relevant access to information across your enterprise. As we mentioned in our first post in this series - it is easy to quickly start producing content, but the challenge is ensuring that the environment is easy to navigate and use on the third week and during the third year. The light level of effort that was placed into the Request Phase of this process will set us up to keep content clean and relevant for a long time to come. With an up-to-date content repository users will be able to quickly find access to the information that is critical to their work processes. You might not get a holiday named in your honor managing the content system, but will appreciate their quick access to quality information.
