• Accessing the physical IP address of a computer on my network that is no longer available

  I'm trying to find out how to access the IP address of a computer (macbook pro) that I once had on my network at home. Does terminal store the 'connected' or 'linked' computer ID or IP of a networked computer anywhere that I can access after the laptop is no-longer within range? The laptop was part of my airport extreme network, its now out of range (stolen!), and I would like to know if its possible to discover the physical address of that laptop, even though I no-longer have physical access to the laptop. I have my airport extreme configured (somewhere??) to sniff out that laptop if it comes within range, and then connect to it. Where would this 'configured info' be stored on my desktop?

• Chrome window controls in xubuntu 12.04

  I'm a long time ubuntu 10.04 LTS user, very used to having window controls on top left borders. New computer with new video card requires newer kernel. Unity doesn't suit and much googling turned up recommendations for xubuntu. Installed 12.04 and first aggravation is window controls at upper right a la Windows. No problem ... Settings Manager - Windows Manager - rearrange button layout Fixes everything until ... I abandoned firefox long ago because of memory leak issues and general fat. I fetch a current version of chrome (19.0.1084.52) and install. Once adblock is added and it's the default browser, everything's great. Except ... Alone among all applications, chrome will not honour the window manager's preferred button layout. Buttons are at upper right no matter what I try. Uninstall and then reinstall: nope. Trawl through /home/user/.config/google-chrome/* looking for a likely setting: nope. Search the web: nothing useful. How do I get chrome's window decoration in sync? Thanks very much for any and all help.

• remote desktop network failed connection

  I was trying to create a remote desktop connection from Windows XP to my Windows Vista Ultimate Addition machine at home. This normally works fine. Today after my connection was dropped, I tried to reconnect to my machine. It brings me to the normal startup screen, but when I tried to log in, it gave me the message "This network connection doesn't exist". This doesn't make much sense, as I have reached a Windows style login screen already. My connection returned later that day, but I'm curious as to what happened. Anyone see this before?

• unusual webpage access problem

  This is one of the weirdest problems I've ever seen and I'm out of ideas. I cannot access a couple of websites from my home pc (for 3-4 days now), or at least they go really really slow ~700b/s I can access these same websites fine from my laptop from same IP address. - The websites originate from different countries and are huge popular sites. - I have tried both my PC's network cards. - I have reformatted my PC. - I have reset my router to factory settings. - I have created virtual computers on my PC, and from inside those I cannot access the webpages. - I have flushed my dns. - I tried specifying my dns server addresses to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. I can only access the webpages using my PC, if I first connect to an outside VPN. Again, these sites work fine on the 2 other pcs in this house (same ISP and internet connection). help plz :)

  I have my own wifi network at home & recently when I checked the active clients on the wifi I found out the there is one active client. Router shows the MAC address of this client and I want to Access this computer in order to let him know that he's doing a wrong thing. I dont intent to do any harm to his data. I just want to know a method to send him a message saying "Buy you own wifi". How can I achieve this using a windows 8 computer. Is there any specific softwares that I can use or will the netsend command do the trick! Thank you.

• How do I set up an sftp user to login with a password to an EC2 ubuntu server ?

  Hello, I have an Ubuntu Server running on an EC2 instance. To login to that server I use a certificate file without any password. I've installed and configured vsftpd and created a user (let's call him "testuser") for which I've set a /bin/false ssh terminal so it will only be able to connect via sftp and upload/access files on his home directory. However - when I try to connect to the server from my computer, running sftp testuser@my-ec2-server I get Permission denied (publickey). Connection closed messages so I can't log in. How can I remove the certificate requirement for this user only (meaning, the "ubuntu" user will still have to use the certificate file to login via ssh), so normal sftp clients will be able to connect using a username and a password ? Thank you. PS Using Ubuntu Server 10.10 official AMI from canonical, 64bit on a micro instance.

• At what point would you drop some of your principles of software development for the sake of more money?

  I'd like to throw this question out there to interestingly see where the medium is. I'm going to admit that in my last 12 months, I picked up TDD and a lot of the Agile values in software development. I was so overwhelmed with how much better my development of software became that I would never drop them out of principle. Until...I was offered a contracting role that doubled my take home pay for the year. The company I joined didn't follow any specific methodology, the team hadn't heard of anything like code smells, SOLID, etc., and I certainly wasn't going to get away with spending time doing TDD if the team had never even seen unit testing in practice. Am I a sell out? No, not completely... Code will always been written "cleanly" (as per Uncle Bob's teachings) and the principles of SOLID will always be applied to the code that I write as they are needed. Testing was dropped for me though, the company couldn't afford to have such a unknown handed to the team who quite frankly, even I did create test frameworks, they would never use/maintain the test framework correctly. Using that as an example, what point would you say a developer should never drop his craftsmanship principles for the sake of money/other benefits to them personally? I understand that this can be a very personal opinion on how concerned one is to their own needs, business needs, and the sake of craftsmanship etc. But one can consider that for example testing can be dropped if the company decided they would rather have a test team, than rather understand unit testing in programming, would that be something you could forgive yourself for like I did? So given that there is something you would drop, there usually should be an equal cost in the business that makes up for what you drop - hopefully, unless of course you are pretty much out for lining your own pockets and not community/social collaborating ;). Double your money, go back to RAD? Or walk on, and look for someone doing Agile, and never look back...

  I searched for a simple way to create .deb Packages for things which have no source code to compile (configs, shellscripts, proprietary software). This was quite a problem because most of the package tutorials are assuming you have a source tarball you want to compile. Then I've found this short tutorial (german). Afterwards, I created a small script to create a simple repository. Like this: rm /export/my-repository/repository/* cd /home/tdeutsch/deb-pkg for i in $(ls | grep my); do dpkg -b ./$i /export/my-repository/repository/$i.deb; done cd /export/avanon-repository/repository gpg --armor --export "My Package Signing Key" > PublicKey apt-ftparchive packages ./ | gzip > Packages.gz apt-ftparchive packages ./ > Packages apt-ftparchive release ./ > /tmp/Release.tmp; mv /tmp/Release.tmp Release gpg --output Release.gpg -ba Release I added the key to the apt keyring and included the source like this: deb http://my.default.com/my-repository/ ./ It looks like the repo itself is working well (I ran into some problems, to fix them I needed to add the Packages twice and make the temp-file workaround for the Release file). I also put some downloaded .deb into the repo, it looks like they are also working without problems. But my self created packages didn't... Wenn i do sudo apt-get update, they are causing errors like this: E: Problem parsing dependency Depends E: Error occurred while processing my-printerconf (NewVersion2) E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/my.default.com_my-repository_._Packages E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. Has anyone an idea what I did wrong?

• Firmware/driver for Broadcom wifi card, PowerBook G4 running Ubuntu 12.04 [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: How to Install Broadcom Wireless Drivers 40 answers This is my first time working with Ubuntu (or Linux), so please be patient. I am running Ubuntu 12.04-powerpc "Precise Pangolin" on a Mac PowerBook G4 with 1.67GHz processor. The firmware/driver for the wifi card is missing. For reasons not worth explaining, I cannot physically plug the computer into the network. I have another computer, a MacBook Pro running OSX, from which I can download files and port them by USB thumb drive. The wifi card in the PowerBook G4 is by Broadcom. The chip is BCM4306, rev. 3. The PCI number is 14e4:4302. I have downloaded b43-fwcutter_015-14_powerpc.deb and dropped it into the Home folder on the Ubuntu machine. However, it will not install. When I double-click, it opens with Ubuntu SoftwareCenter, but the "Install" button is inactive: I can't click it. There's a message beside the inactive button saying, "An older version of 'b43-fwcutter' is available in your normal software channels. Only install this file if you trust the origin." If I "right-click" the .deb file and open with Archive Manager, it shows me the "DEBIAN" and "usr" folders, but I'm unsure what to do from there...and fairly certain this is not the right way to do things. Maybe I have the wrong version of b43-fwcutter for my machine/version of Ubuntu? The documentation for this problem is a mess. It refers to all sorts of out-of-date Ubuntu versions and to an array of different "cutter" and firmware files. Maybe I'd be able to figure this out if I were a more seasoned Ubuntu user, but I have no idea why Sofware Center won't let me do the install. I would be VERY grateful for an explanation of how to get the wifi card working on this machine again. Thank you!

• Gentoo Linux -> Ubuntu: Can I Preserve My LVM/RAID Devices, Or Do I Need To Reformat?

  Hello: I've got a Gentoo box that I'm interested in switching over to an Ubuntu box. I currently have the partitions laid out using a mixture of RAID (mdadm) and LVM2, as specified in this document [1]. Ideally I'd like to just wipe out the non /home partition, as it's got data I'd like to keep. Is it possible to reuse the current setup, or do I need to restart? vgdisplay, vgchange -a y, etc don't yield any results from the Ubuntu LiveCD, and I'm wary to run any commands that might wipe my data. • git for personal (one-man) projects. Overkill?

  I know, and use, two version control systems: Subversion and git. Subversion, as of now, gets used for personal projects where I am the only developer and git gets used for open source projects and projects where I believe others will also work on the project. This is mostly because of git's amazing forking and merging capabilities, where everyone may work on their own branch; very handy. Now, I use Subversion for personal projects, as I think git makes little sense there. It seems to be a little bit of overkill. It is OK for me if it is centralized (on my home server, usually) when I am the only developer; I take regular backups anyway. I don't need the ability to make my own branch, the main branch is my branch. Yes, SVN has simple support for branching, but much more powerful support for it makes no sense, I think. Merging can be a pain with it, or at least from my little experience. Is there any good reason for me to use git on personal projects, or is it just simply overkill?

  Gyakran kapok kérdéseket az Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control licencelésével kapcsolatban, ezért az alábbiakban igyekszem összefoglalni a legfontosabb információkat. Az alábbi ismerteto nem teljes köru, mivel számos olyan termék van (Data Masking, Real Application Testing, Real User Experience Insight, Application Testing Suite), melyek kapcsolódnak az Enterprise Manager-hez, azonban licencelésük másképp muködik. Az Enterprise Manager licenceléssel kapcsolatban az elsodleges információ forrás a Licensing Information doksi. A legfontosabb információk: - A Grid Control keretrendszer (Agent-ek és a konzol az alapfunkciókkal - lásd késobb) önmagában ingyenes, sot restricted-use licencet tartalmaz Oracle Database-re, amennyiben azt csak az Oracle Management Repository céljára használják. Fontos, hogy ez nem tartalmaz egyéb Oracle Database opciókat, mint például a RAC!   Quick resolution: Give full permission to AUTHENTICATED USERS in following folders. a) ORACLE_HOME b) Program Files\ORACLE   Check your PATH. You might have installed different clients in your system and your .NET application is pointing to a home with inappoperiate client. What your .NET application should load is OCI.DLL with File version more than 8.1.7. According to the MSDN document Oracle and ADO.NET:   "The .NET Framework Data Provider for Oracle provides access to an Oracle database using the Oracle Call Interface (OCI) as provided by Oracle Client software. The functionality of the data provider is designed to be similar to that of the .NET Framework data providers for SQL Server, OLE DB, and ODBC. "     The MSDN document System Requirements (Oracle) says: "The .NET Framework Data Provider for Oracle requires Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.6 or later. MDAC 2.8 SP1 is recommended. You must also have Oracle 8i Release 3 (8.1.7) Client or later installed. "   Both the .NET Framework Data Provider for Oracle and Oracle Data Provider for .NET are data providers to access Oracle database. The former ships with .NET Framework and requires Oracle client version 8.1.7 or above. • Detect damage done by virus

  Hey, this morning after I went to college a virus infected my pc without any user interaction at my end. When I came home my computer was completely frozen and infected with lots of trojans. I have not typed anything important since returning so keys cannot be logged. However I want to know exactly when my computer crashed from the time of infection to see what could potentially be done remotely by a hacker. The virus my pc was diagonosed with was "fakespypro" http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=Win32%2fFakeSpypro on a fully updated windows 7 installation with firewall enabled. My computer was connected to an internal dorm room network, so probably that has had to do something with it. Any further information about how I could backtrace this virus infection or ways to discover what data might be stolen would be greatly appriciated.

• Xmonad Xsession

  My user level: noob-ish, so please bear with me I'm running 12.04 LTS. I have installed and, to some extent, configured xmonad 0.10 The "automagically" created xsession for it works fine as it is, but when I login it won't run a startup script I've created and "call from" /usr/share/xsessions/xmonad.desktop, if that's right. I've read pretty much all I could find about .xinitrc and .xsession, I tried that and it somehow messed up the other "sessions", if I'm explaining myself correctly. Had to $unity --reset to have the "main session" working again. Anyway, my question is, how do I autostart xmobar and set a desktop background after login into xmonad's default Xsession? I tried this script, start-xmonad: #!/bin/bash # #I only used one of the following each time I tried, none worked #Also, do I really need the '&'? I know what they're for, but... nitrogen --restore & feh --bg-scale ~/Pictures/picture.png & #Then I want xmobar to start, again do I need the '&'? I know it's for it to run #in the background, but I tried removing the '&' and xmonad still launched xmobar & #Finally, the only thing that seems to work in this script exec xmonad Yes, I made sure I did chomd +x ~/start-xmonad The xmonad.desktop is [Desktop Entry] Name=XMonad Encoding=UTF-8 Comment=Lightweight tiling window manager Exec=/home/myusername/start-xmonad Icon=custom_xmonad_badge.png Type=XSession So, this didn't work, now I'm here. • how to run an AFS file server on a specific ethernet card (in Debian)

  I have a linux box running Debian server with minimal number of packages (so no GUI for network management). The box has two ethernet cards, one of which (eth0) is connected to a Mac OSX computer using a cross-cable. I can bring up eth0 and assign a static ip (10.10.11.16) to it. This way I can ssh to the box through the cross-cable. This is what I run on Linux box: ifconfig eth0 10.10.11.16 netmask 255.255.255.0 up I also installed/started a file server (AFS) on Debian. So far, the file server can only be accessed through eth1 which is exposed to my home LAN and www. My goal is to set up the file server so that it's only visible through eth0. Is this possible? and if yes, how can I do it?

• SHH Tunnel for Remote Desktop via Intermediary Server

  I've seen many examples of SSH tunnels on the nets, but I'm still having no luck with this. Here's the setup: Windows 7 PC in a private network, sitting behind a firewall, with PowerShellInsider SSH server set up and working fine. Public access Linux server, which has access to the PC. Windows 7 laptop, at home, from which I wish to do remote desktop on the PC. Now, here's what I've tried so far: SSH tunnel from my laptop to the Linux server: ssh -f my_user@LINUX_SERVER -L 6666:LINUX_SERVER_IP:6666 -N SSH to the Linux server where I've set up a tunnel to the PC: ssh -f 'PRIVATE_DOMAIN\my_user'@PC_NAME -L 6666:PC_IP:3389 -N Unfortunately, I must be doing something wrong, because it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas why or, at least, any suggestions on how can I try to debug this setup? At the moment, I have access to all 3 machines (non-root on Linux), so I can test whatever I want...

• AMD FX 8350 potentially overheating

  I am worried that my CPU is overheating when running at maximum capacity. I have not overclocked the machine. The machine often powers down after a couple of minutes of max CPU usage. I get the following events in the Event Log after the crash: Log Name: System Source: Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power Date: 11/10/2013 12:05:40 Event ID: 41 Task Category: (63) Level: Critical Keywords: (2) User: SYSTEM Computer: home-pc Description: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. What can I do to confirm this or further narrow down this issue? Due to the sudden nature of the crash, no MEMORY.DMP is created I believe. I am happy to post any extra information that is needed.

• Why can't I access a particular website even though the server appears to be available

  I can't access http://www.lynda.com/ with any of my browsers on my home network. By checking http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/, I can see that the server is up and I can access it via a proxy like TOR. This screen appears immediately after I type the page in It doesn't even try to load the page, it seems. Though when I ping the server I get this: I tried to do ipconfig /flushdns. But it didn't help either. Anyone know how to fix this?

• DBD::mysql gives mysql_init not found

  I have to install a non-admin copy of mysql and perl module DBD::mysql in my home directory. I installed mysql in ~/software/db/mysql and this works since I can start and stop the server and go to the mysql prompt. Then, I downloaded the perl module and installed it using perl Makefile.PL PREFIX=~/myperl/ LIB=~/myperl/lib/lib64/perl5/ --mysql_config=/my_home/software/db/mysql/bin/mysql_config --libs=/myhome/software/db/mysql/lib/libmysqlclient.a make make install I did this to use the statically linked mysql client library. perl -MDBD::mysql -e 1 gives no errors. However, when I actually try to use the module, I get /usr/bin/perl: symbol lookup error: /myhome/myperl/lib/lib64/perl5/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/auto/DBD/mysql/mysql.so: undefined symbol: mysql_init
