• A Hot Topic - Profitability and Cost Management

  Maybe it's due to the recent recession, or current economic recovery but a hot topic and area of focus for many organizations these days is profitability and cost management.  For most organizations, aggressive cost-cutting and cost management were critical to remaining profitable while top line revenue was flat or shrinking.  However, now we are seeing many organizations taking a more "surgical" approach to profitability and cost management, by accurately allocating revenue and costs to individual product lines, services, customer segments, locations, channels and other lines of business to understand which ones are truly profitable and which ones are not.  Based on these insights, managers can make more informed decisions about which products or services to invest in or retire, how to price their products or services for different customer segments, and where to focus their marketing and customer service resources. The most common industries where this product, service and customer-focused costing and profitability analysis is being adopted include financial services, consumer packaged goods, retail and manufacturing.  However we are seeing adoption of profitability and cost management applications in other industries and use cases.  Here are a few examples: Telecommunications Industry:  Network Costing and Management to identify the most cost effective and/or profitable network areas, to optimize existing resources, infrastructure and network capacity.  Regulatory Cost Accounting to perform more accurate allocations of revenue and costs across services and customer segments, improve ability to set billing rates for future periods, for various products and customer segments and more easily develop analysis needed for rate case proposals. Healthcare Insurance:  Visually, justifiable Medical Loss Ratio results, better knowledge of the cost to service healthcare plans and members, accurate understanding of member segment and plan profitability, improved marketing programs through better member segmentation. Public Sector:  Statutory / Regulatory Compliance:  A variety of statutory and regulatory documents state explicitly or implicitly that the use of government resources must be properly tracked and tied to performance goals.  Managerial costing methods implemented through Cost Management applications provide unparalleled visibility into costs and shared services usage throughout a Public Sector agency. Funding Support:  Regulations require public sector funding requests to be evaluated based upon the ability to achieve performance goals against the associated cost.   Improved visibility and understanding of costs of different programs/services means that organizations can demonstrably monitor performance and the associated resource costs improve the chances of having their funding requests granted. • "ODM" - One of the Support team's most valued acronyms

  If you submit technical service requests (SRs) through the My Oracle Support portal, you may often see the term "ODM" used in updates from our Support team. ODM is an acronym for "Oracle Diagnostic Methodology", which defines a standard problem solving approach that all of Oracle Support uses for every technical SR. ODM provides a number of benefits to the SRs - both for the Support organization and for the customer - including a consistent approach, higher quality, justified solutions, and ultimately faster resolution. Screenshot: Example of an ODM "Issue Clarification" activity in a service request The Oracle Diagnostic Methodology applies to both categories of technical SRs: Consultative (question-answer topics) and Problem-Solution. There are a few KM Notes that describe the steps of ODM, however to keep things simple (and since those KM Notes appear to be a bit outdated), I'll summarize the ODM stages here as follows: Consultative ODM - Three mandatory stages: ODM Question: Clarification of the customer's exact question. ODM Answer: Thorough answer to the customer's question. ODM Knowledge Content: Reference to new or existing knowledge base content, or explanation why the particular SR does not necessarily require knowledge content. Problem-Solution ODM - Eight mandatory stages: ODM Issue Clarification: Clarification of the reported issue, including the symptoms, the steps to reproduce, and an outline of the business impact ODM Issue Verification: Confirmation of the issue being verified based on proof provided by the customer, such as screenshots, log files, or reproducing the issue during an Oracle Web Conference. ODM Cause Determination: Succinct outline of the root cause of the issue. ODM Cause Justification: Explanation as to why the root cause applies to this particular situation. ODM Proposed Solution(s): Succinct outline of the potential solution(s) to resolve the issue. ODM Proposed Solution(s) Justification: Explanation of why the proposed solution(s) will in fact resolve the issue. ODM Solution Action Plan: Detailed numbered instructions on how to execute the proposed solutions. ODM Knowledge Content: Reference to new or existing knowledge base content, or explanation why the particular SR does not necessarily require knowledge content. During these stages, you may see other optional ODM-related activities such as "ODM Data Collection", "ODM Action Plan", "ODM Research", and "ODM Test Case". Again, these structured tags help ensure a uniform methodology across your SRs. With this knowledge you should be able to develop better predictability of what's coming next in your SRs, as well as what you can do to help expedite the resolution process.

  Consider the following client request “Please create a report for us to list expenses”. Which Oracle EBS tool would you choose? There are plenty of options available: Oracle Reports, or BI Publisher with PDF or Excel layout, or Discoverer, or BI Publisher Stand Alone, or PDF online generation, or Oracle WebADI, or Plain SQL*Plus as Concurrent Program, or Online review option … Assuming, you as development lead have to decide, you may decide by available skill set in your development team. However, is this a good decision? An important question to influence the decision is the “Why” question: why do you need this report, what process is behind, what exactly you like to achieve? We see often data created or printed, although it would be much better to get the data in Excel, and upload changes via WebADI directly. There are more points that should drive your decision: How many of such requirements you have got? Has this technique been used in the project already? Are there related reusable’s you may gain from? How difficult is it to maintain your solution? Can you merge this report with another one, to reduce test and maintenance work? In addition, also your own development standards should guide you a bit to come to a good decision. In one of my own projects, we discussed such topics in our weekly team meeting. By utilizing the team knowledge best, you may come to a better decision, and additionally, your team supports your decision. Unfortunately, I have rarely seen dedicated team trainings or planned knowledge transfer to support such processes. Often the pressure to deliver on time is too high to have discussion and decision time left. But exactly this can help keeping maintenance costs low by limiting the number of alternative solutions for similar requirements. Lastly, design decisions should be documented to allow another person taking this over easily. Decisions shall be reviewed and updated regularly, to reflect related procedures or Oracle products respective product versions. Summary: Oracle EBS offers plenty of alternatives to implement customizations. Create and maintain a decision tree to support the design process. Do not leave the decision just on developer side. Limit the number of alternative solutions as best as possible; choose one which is the most appropriate also from future maintenance perspective.

• Throttling Cache Events

  The real-time eventing feature in Coherence is great for relaying state changes to other systems or to users. However, sometimes not all changes need to or can be sent to consumers. For instance; If rapid changes cannot be consumed or interpreted as fast as they are being sent. A user looking at changing Stock prices may only be able to interpret and react to 1 change per second. A client may be using low bandwidth connection, so rapidly sending events will only result in them being queued and delayed A large number of clients may need to be notified of state changes and sending 100 events p/s to 1000 clients cannot be supported with the available hardware, but 10 events p/s to 1000 clients can. Note this example assumes that many of the state changes are to the same value. One simple approach to throttling Coherence cache events is to use a cache store to capture changes to one cache (data cache) and insert those changes periodically in another cache (events cache). Consumers interested in state changes to entires in the first cache register an interest (event listener) against the second event cache. By using the cache store write-behind feature rapid updates to the same cache entry are coalesced so that updates are merged and written at the interval configured to the event cache. This is a very simple pattern which has a lot of additional possibilities, but it also has a few drawbacks you should be aware of: This event throttling implementation will use additional memory as a duplicate copy of entries held in the data cache need to be held in the events cache too - 2 if the event cache has backups A data cache may already use a cache store, so a "multiplexing cache store pattern" must also be used to send changes to the existing and throttling cache store.  If you would like to try out this throttling example you can download it here. • Difference between an LL and Recursive Descent parser?

  I've recently being trying to teach myself how parsers (for languages/context-free grammars) work, and most of it seems to be making sense, except for one thing. I'm focusing my attention in particular on LL(k) grammars, for which the two main algorithms seem to be the LL parser (using stack/parse table) and the Recursive Descent parser (simply using recursion). As far as I can see, the recursive descent algorithm works on all LL(k) grammars and possibly more, whereas an LL parser works on all LL(k) grammars. A recursive descent parser is clearly much simpler than an LL parser to implement, however (just as an LL one is simply than an LR one). So my question is, what are the advantages/problems one might encounter when using either of the algorithms? Why might one ever pick LL over recursive descent, given that it works on the same set of grammars and is trickier to implement? Hopefully this question makes some amount of sense. Sorry if it doesn't - I blame my the fact that this entire subject is almost entirely new to me.

  Hi. I have a client who wants a paypal shopping cart. All of the services have "Buy Now" buttons, all with different prices. However, there is one service, which is a FREE 0 dollar service.   I would like to license my project with the flowing conditions: Personal and educational usage of the program and its source codes is to be free. In case of publishing of derivative works the original work and author (me) must be mentioned (incl. textual link to my website in a not-very-far-hidden place) and the derivative work must have different name. A derivative work can be closed-source. In every case of commercial (when the end-user is a commercial body (as a company (expect of non-profit companies), an individual entrepreneur or government office)) usage of my work or any of derivative works made by anyone, the end-user, service provider or the derivative author must buy a commercial license from me. I mean no guarantees or resoinsibilities, either expressed or implied... (except the case when one explicitly purchases a support service contract from me and the particular contract specifies a responsibility). Is there a known common license for this case? May it be OSI-approved?

We need something that would crawl Internet websites by specific rules we set (for ex. country domains) and gather URLs, Texts, keywords, name of websites and create our own internal catalogue so we wouldn't be limited to any massive external search engine like Google or Yahoo.   I've seen some software (a Joomla component, to be exact) for sale on a web site. The web site says it is licensed under the GNU GPL2. However it also says you need to pay for every site you use the software on (with bulk discounts). I know it's perfectly acceptable to sell software under the GPL, however the license implies that the source code must be distributed at no cost. So is this a legitimate use of the GPL, or is it violating the license? Is it legal to download the software for free (say, from Bittorrent) and use it as I wish?

• Linux Mint 13 64bit Cinnamon and Oracle Virtualbox: 3d acceleration crash

  I've recently got an interest in Linux. After some research, it looks like Linux Mint 13 cinnamon is hot and I thought I'd try it out... I'm running Windows 7 64bit and have experience with Oracle Virtual Box. So I thought it would be a good idea to try out Linux Mint inside Virtual Box. I download Linux Mint 13 64bit Cinnamon and set it up in my VM player... Nothing special about my settings. Except Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon requires 3d acceleration, and when I enable that, it crashes whenever I open the Menu in the bottom left corner of the guest OS (and some other times too)... I've seen other mentions of this problem on the web, but no solutions. Is there a solution? If not, any suggestions short of installing the OS on a partition for trying out this OS (I'm not interested in the LIve mode either - I'd really like to get the full feel for it)?

• Quickly revert an Oracle Database to a known state

  I would like to use Selenium to test a web application but in order to do that successfully the tests must be run against a database at a known state. The recording and running of the Selenium tests is not within the scope of this website so I'm only looking for recommendations on how best to revert the database after each test execution. Some details: current database size is 30GB however only about 4GB needs to be reverted database is Oracle 11g Standard Edition running on Windows Server 2003 the data in 6 different schemas needs to be reverted Ideally the process should be scripted so that it can be re-executed frequently and automatically via a scheduled task.

• Keyboard in Oracle VirtualBox

  My buddy is running Oracle VirtualBox, and everything works fine - except for the fact that the backslash ( \ ) key on a Swiss-German keyboard doesn't work - instead you're getting a vertical bar ( | ) - which is really quite annoying if you're trying to type in UNC paths.... The \ on a Swiss-German keyboard is on the key with the < and > signs - you need to press Alt Gr or Alt+Ctrl to get it. Is there any way to teach VirtualBox that we're using a Swiss German keyboard and that it should respect the keyboard layout??

I have updated the following files: TNSNames.ora, Listener.ora and hs.ora. When performing a test connection from SQL developer, I get the following error - ORA 28500 - indicating that the login for SA user is incorrect. I also tried using another authenticated user that has rights to the database. I can successfully connect with SQL 2000. Has anyone experienced such a problem before?

If this happens, then all the transactions will be happening on that backup database. • Android app crashes on emulator - logCat shows no errors

  I have just added the SherlockActionBar library to my android project. After some small changes (FragmentActivity - SherlockFragmentActivity, getActionBar() - getSupportActionBar(), imports) it all compiled nicely. After I run the app, however, the debugger stops, as though it had encountered an exception. However, there are no errors shown in the LogCat output. I just can't wrap my head around what's going on. • OWB 11gR2 &ndash; OLAP and Simba

  Oracle Warehouse Builder was the first ETL product to provide a single integrated and complete environment for managing enterprise data warehouse solutions that also incorporate multi-dimensional schemas. The OWB 11gR2 release provides Oracle OLAP 11g deployment for multi-dimensional models (in addition to support for prior releases of OLAP). This means users can easily utilize Simba's MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP (see here for details and cost) which allows you to use the powerful and popular ad hoc query and analysis capabilities of Microsoft Excel PivotTables® and PivotCharts® with your Oracle OLAP business intelligence data. The extensions to the dimensional modeling capabilities have been built on established relational concepts, with the option to seamlessly move from a relational deployment model to a multi-dimensional model at the click of a button. This now means that ETL designers can logically model a complete data warehouse solution using one single tool and control the physical implementation of a logical model at deployment time. As a result data warehouse projects that need to provide a multi-dimensional model as part of the overall solution can be designed and implemented faster and more efficiently. Wizards for dimensions and cubes let you quickly build dimensional models and realize either relationally or as an Oracle database OLAP implementation, both 10g and 11g formats are supported based on a configuration option. The wizard provides a good first cut definition and the objects can be further refined in the editor. Both wizards let you choose the implementation, to deploy to OLAP in the database select MOLAP: multidimensional storage. You will then be asked what levels and attributes are to be defined, by default the wizard creates a level bases hierarchy, parent child hierarchies can be defined in the editor. Once the dimension or cube has been designed there are special mapping operators that make it easy to load data into the objects, below we load a constant value for the total level and the other levels from a source table.   Again when the cube is defined using the wizard we can edit the cube and define a number of analytic calculations by using the 'generate calculated measures' option on the measures panel. This lets you very easily add a lot of rich analytic measures to your cube. For example one of the measures is the percentage difference from a year ago which we can see in detail below. You can also add your own custom calculations to leverage the capabilities of the Oracle OLAP option, either by selecting existing template types such as moving averages to defining true custom expressions. The 11g OLAP option now supports percentage based summarization (the amount of data to precompute and store), this is available from the option 'cost based aggregation' in the cube's configuration. Ensure all measure-dimensions level based aggregation is switched off (on the cube-dimension panel) - previously level based aggregation was the only option. The 11g generated code now uses the new unified API as you see below, to generate the code, OWB needs a valid connection to a real schema, this was not needed before 11gR2 and is a new requirement since the OLAP API which OWB uses is not an offline one. Once all of the objects are deployed and the maps executed then we get to the fun stuff! How can we analyze the data? One option which is powerful and at many users' fingertips is using Microsoft Excel PivotTables® and PivotCharts®, which can be used with your Oracle OLAP business intelligence data by utilizing Simba's MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP (see Simba site for details of cost). I'll leave the exotic reporting illustrations to the experts (see Bud's demonstration here), but with Simba's MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP its very simple to easily access the analytics stored in the database (all built and loaded via the OWB 11gR2 release) and get the regular features of Excel at your fingertips such as using the conditional formatting features for example. That's a very quick run through of the OWB 11gR2 with respect to Oracle 11g OLAP integration and the reporting using Simba's MDX Provider for Oracle OLAP. Not a deep-dive in any way but a quick overview to illustrate the design capabilities and integrations possible.

• Java in Flux: Utopia or Deuteranopia?

  What a difference a year makes, indeed. Steve Harris, Senior VP, App Server Dev, Oracle and Adam Messinger, VP, Fusion Middleware Group, Oracle presented an informative keynote at the TheServerSide Java Symposium today. With a title "Java in Flux: Utopia or Deuteranopia?" you know things are going to be interesting (see Aeon Flux if you don't get the title reference).What a YearThey started with a little background, explaining that the reactions to Oracle's acquisition of Sun (and therefore Java) one year ago varied greatly, from "Freak Out!" to "Don't Panic." From the Oracle perspective, being the steward of and key contributor to Java requires a lot of sausage making.  They admitted to Oracle's fair share of Homer Simpson-esque "D'oh" moments in the past year, which was complicated by Oracle's communication style.   "Oracle has a tradition has a saying a few things and sticking by then, in contrast to Sun who was much more open," Adam explained. "We laid out the Java roadmap and are executing on it, and we hope that speaks to our commitment."Java SEAdam talked about having a long term perspective on the Java language (20+ years), letting ideas mature in more experimental languages, then bringing them into Java. Current priorities include: JVM convergence (getting the best features of JRockit into Hotspot); support of parallel/multi-core programming, and of course, all the improvements in JDK7. The JDK7 Developer Preview is underway (please download now and report bugs!). The Oracle development team is also working on Lambda and modularity (Jigsaw) for SE 8. Less certain, but also under discussion are improvements for Java SE 9. Adam is thinking of it as a "back to basics" release. He mentioned reworking JNI, improving data integration and improved device support.Java EE To provide context about Java EE, Steve said Java EE was great at getting businesses on the internet. The success of Java EE resulted in an incredible expansion of the middleware marketplace for developers and vendors.  But with success, came more. Java EE kept piling on capabilities, but that created excess baggage.  Doing simple things was no longer so simple. That's where Java community is so valuable: "When Java EE was too complex and heavyweight, many people were happy to tell us what we were doing wrong and popularize solutions," Steve explained. Because of that feedback, the Java EE teams focused on making things simple again: POJOs and annotations, and leveraging changes in Java SE.  Steve said that "innovation doesn't happen in expert groups, it happens on the ground where developers are solving problems," and platform stewards need to pay attention and take advantage of changes that are taking place.Enter the Cloud "Developers are restless, they want cloud functionality from their own IT dept" Steve explained. With the cloud, the scope of problem has expanded to include the data center itself, with multiple tenants. To move forward, existing APIs in Java EE need to be updated to be tenant-aware, service-enabled, and EE needs to support various styles of deployment. The goal is to get all that done in Java EE 8.Adam questioned Steve about timing and schedule. "Yes, the schedule is aggressive, but it'll work" Steve said. Then Adam asked about modularization. If Java SE 8 comes out at the end of 2012, when can Java EE deliver modularization? Steve suggested that key stakeholders can come with up some pre-SE 8 agreement on how to expose the metadata about modules. He then alluded to Mark Reinhold and John Duimovich's keynote at EclipseCON next week.
