• Should we be able to deploy a single package to the SSIS Catalog?

  My buddy Sutha Thiru sent me an email recently asking about my opinion on a particular nuance of the project deployment model in SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) 2012 and I’d like to share my response as I think it warrants a wider discussion. For example if we have following scenrio how do we do deploy? Sprint 1 Pkg1, 2 & 3 has been developed and deployed to UAT. Once signed off its been deployed to Live. Sprint 2 Pkg 4 & 5 been developed. During this time users raised a bug on Pkg2. We want to make the change to Pkg2 and deploy that to UAT and eventually to LIVE without releasing Pkg 4 &5. How do we do it? I steadfastly believe that there should not be a way for an unscrupulous developer to slide in a new version of a package under the covers. Deploying .ispac files brings a degree of rigour to your operational processes. Yes, that means that we as SSIS developers are going to have to get better at using source control and branching properly but that is no bad thing in my opinion. Claiming to be proper "developers" is a bit of a cheap claim if we don't even do the fundamentals correctly. I would be interested in the thoughts of others who have used the project deployment model. Do you agree with my point of view? @Jamiet

• Author has inserted copyright into code with gnu public license notice - implications?

  I've found a project on Github that I'm interested in contributing to which claims to be open source and has a GPL license included with it. But the original author has added a copyright notification to each source file. I'm not sure why but I don't feel right contributing to a project that's always going to have someone else's name on it. It really breaks the community-created feel, and makes me uneasy about what the author might choose to do with the project next. What are the implications of copyrighting open source GPL code as so? • What is an effective git process for managing our central code library?

  Quick background: we're a small web agency (3-6 developers at any one time) developing small to medium sized Symfony 1.4 sites. We've used git for a year now, but most of our developers have preferred Subversion and aren't used to a distributed model. For the past 6 months we've put a lot of development time into a central Symfony plugin that powers our custom CMS. This plugin includes a number of features, helpers, base classes etc. that we use to build custom functionality. This plugin is stored in git, but branches wildly as the plugin is used in various products and is pulled from/pushed to constantly. The repository is usually used as a submodule within a major project. The problems we're starting to see now are a large number of Merge conflicts and backwards incompatible changes brought into the repository by developers adding custom functionality in the context of their own project. I've read Vincent Driessen's excellent git branching model and successfully used it for projects in the past, but it doesn't seem to quite apply well to our particular situation; we have a number of projects concurrently using the same core plugin while developing new features for it. What we need is a strategy that provides the following: A methodology for developing major features within the code repository. A way of migrating those features into other projects. A way of versioning the core repository, and of tracking which version each major project uses. A plan for migrating bug fixes back to older versions. A cleaner history that's easier to see where changes have come from. Any suggestions or discussion would be greatly appreciated.

• Change from Bullet/OgreAnim to Havok?

  I have been working on a game in Ogre for the last 6 months or so. It started as a learning project, and after a few rewrites it actually turned into a real game project. Physics scared me, and using Bullet with its lack of documentation was a nightmare, but I was able to atleast get some basics added and learned a lot. So as of now I am using Ogre with its default animation system (fairly basic) and Bullet Physics. I had always wanted to use Havok when I started out, but due to lack of integration information on the Ogre forums, and lack of tutorials on the net, I decided against it. Now that I am actually at the point where Bullet is just too much of a headache to proceed with (staring at forum threads praying someone answers) and the Ogre animation system is so basic, I am considering switching to Havok for Physics and Animation. The Physics system looks extremely polished and easy to use. The animation system looks incredible with the retargeting/blending/etc. The documentation is incredibly detailed as well (I guess when you come from Bullet, any documentation looks amazing) So my question is, as I am still somewhat of a 'newbie' to game development, should I just stick with what I am using now or should I make the switch over to Havok? The physics looks like I could get my project back to where it is now with minimal effort, and be able to expand much faster. The animation aspect looks extremely daunting as far as integrating it with Ogre.

• Why don't we use dynamic (server-side generated) CSS?

  As server-side generated HTML is trivial (and it was the only way to make dynamic webpages before AJAX), server-side generated CSS is not. Actually, I've never seen it. There are CSS compilers, but they generate CSS files which can be used as static. Technically, it requires no special libraries, the HTML style tag should reference to the PHP(/ASP/whatever) templater script instead of the static CSS file, and the script should send out CSS content-type header - that's all. Does it have cache problems? I don't think so. The script should send out no-cache etc. headers. Is it problem for designers? No, they should edit the CSS template (as they edit the HTML template). Why we don't use dynamic CSS generators? Or if there's any, please let me know.

• How to make use of movie events imported by imovie 09 from a DVR

  I have imported about 100 clips of video from my DVR using imovie 09 and they are all saved under movie events folder, this is ok. The problem is all the movie events files are not in standard formats, they are in some 'Apple Intermediate Format' only Quicktime and iMovie recoginize and play. My problem is I simply want to give my 100 clips of video to someone using PC and this intermediate format produced by imovie is not playable or convertable by anything I have found. Now the only option for me seems to be creating a project in iMovie and drag all the clips into the project and then export these 100 clips into a single standard file, but iMovie doesn't even let me conveninent do that, I can only click at some clip, select all, drag into the project, and repeat for 100 more times, Is there a alternative way I can do so? (or use Quicktime player to convert video formats one by one). Thanks

• Scheduled Deprecation of Legacy Obligation Features

  The Obligation object in ETPM includes some functionality and tables that, to our knowledge, are not being used by customers and implementers are this time.  Removing this logic and the related tables should benefit the performance of and simplify logic executed during Obligation maintenance processing. The Release Notes included with ETPM v2.3.1 announced that the product plans to deprecate the functionality on Obligation for Contract Terms, Contract Quantities, Tax Exemptions, Terms & Conditions and Obligation Type Start Options.  Our plan is to remove this functionality in the next release of ETPM. We have already confirmed with most project teams that these features are not being used so the deprecation should have no impact on existing designs or process. If you think your project may be impacted by this deprecation, please review any Business Object that has been created for the Obligation maintenance object to make sure that no elements are being defined for any of the following child tables: -          CI_SA_CONTERM -          CI_SA_CONT_QTY -          CI_TOU_CONT_VAL -          CI_SA_TC   As part of this deprecation, the following administrative tables are being removed along with their related metadata: -          Contract Quantity Type -          Tax Exempt Type -          Terms and Conditions Please contact myself or the Oracle Tax Product Management team if your implementation has actually used these objects in their designs. We can discuss options to mitigate impacts of this planned deprecation.  We will continue to announce planned deprecations in the Release Notes for each release and will contact project teams ahead of time to confirm that these deprecations will have little to no impact on our customers.

  now I've been been searching for an answer to this question for at least 3 days now. I've tried on many cocos2d forums, including the official one and have heard nothing back. As interfaces in cocos2d look like this: @interface HelloWorldLayer : CCLayer Now I have asked a similar question to this on stack overflow and a user directed me to this link: https://github.com/krzysztofzablocki/CCNode-SFGestureRecognizers Which I believe makes use of gestures (like the first github linked project) but not custom gestures. • The value of an updated specification

  I'm at the tail end of a large project (around 5 months of my time, 60,000 lines of code) on which I was the only developer. The specification documents for the project were designed well early on, but as always happens during development, some things have changed. For example: Bugs were discovered and fixed in ways that don't correspond well with the spec Additional needs were discovered and dealt with We found areas where the spec hadn't thought far enough ahead and had to change some implementation Etc. Through all this, the spec was not kept updated, because we were lean on resources (I know that's a questionable excuse). I'm hoping to get the spec updated soon when we have time, but it's a matter of convincing management to spend the effort. I believe it's a good idea, but I need some good reasoning; I can't speak from very much experience because I'm only a year and a half out of school. So here are my questions: What value is there in keeping an updated spec? How often should the spec be updated? With every change made that might affect it, just at the end of development, or something in between? EDIT to clarify: this project was internal, so no external client was involved. It's our product.

• Script For Detecting Availability of XMLHttp in Internet Explorer

  Having the XMLHttpRequest API available is key to any ADF Faces Rich Client application. Unfortunately, it is possible for users to switch off this option in Internet Explorer as a Security setting. Without XMLHttpRequest available, your ADF Faces application will simply not work correctly, but rather than giving the user a bad user experience wouldn't it be nicer to tell them that they need to make some changes in order to use the application?  Thanks to Blake Sullivan in the ADF Faces team we now have a little script that can do just this. The script is available from https://samplecode.oracle.com here - The attached file browserCheck.js is what you'll need to add to your project.The best way to use this script is to make changes to whatever template you are using for the entry points to your application. If you're not currently using template then you'll have to make the same change in each of your JSPX pages. Save the browserCheck.js file into a /js/ directory under your HTML root within your UI project (e.g. ViewController)In the template or page, select the <af:document> object in the Structure window. From the right mouse (context) menu choose Facet and select the metaContainer facet.Switch to the source code view and locate the metaContainer facet. • What is the correct UI interface to learn for creating Windows phone 8 apps? [closed]

  I am a veteran Delphi 6 programmer transitioning to C# development. My first project is a open source library that will have a minimal user interface since it is meant to be used as a Component primarily on desktop PCs running Visual Studio. My next project is going to be a Windows 8 phone app and I intend for that platform to be my primary focus for future C# development, not the desktop. My concern is that I waste as little time as possible learning a presentation framework that will benefit or distract me from writing Windows 8 phone apps. The plethora of framework names I have already encountered include, WinForms, WPF (Windows Presentation Framework), Silverlight, Silverlight Mobile, Metro and there may be others. Given my goal outlined in the first paragraph above, I have a few questions: 1) Which of the frameworks should I use for the small amount of UI work I will do with the desktop Component project that will help me the most, or hurt me the least, when I move to Windows 8 phone app development? 2) Which is the correct framework to study for developing Windows 8 phone apps? 3) Any awesome tutorials, resources or books you have run into targeted towards veteran programmers from other platforms? I read about the Portable Library Tools on this Stack Overflow thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5522355/windows-phone-7-wpf-sharing-a-codebase But the reply by Simon Guindon seemed to indicate to me that it's not the best solution for writing a competitive Windows 8 phone app.

• Web Sites All Start When Debugging a Web Site - Visual Studio 2010

  I wanted to blog about this because it was an annoyance to me and I couldn't figure out why for quite some time. Have you ever tried debugging one web application in your solution but when you do, all other web sites in your solution build and then start up their respective Visual Studio Development Server? It's not a major problem, but it adds time to waiting for what you are actually trying to debug to start up. After digging through Visual Studio 2010 settings, I finally found the option to turn it off. It is called Always Start When Debugging and is located in the Properties pane for the web project (click on the project .proj file in Visual Studio IDE). This is set to True by default each time you create a new Web Application project. Setting this to false will solve your problems. You will need to set this to false for all web applications in your solution as shown below: In addition, you can set properties on which port the development server uses each time it debugs. This is helpful if you want the port to stay the same for testing purposes. In contrast, you can set it to use a dynamic port each time so if you have a co-worker that is debugging it on a different session on the same server, you won't run into any problems with using the same port. The machine won't allow you to debug two sessions on the same port. Pretty basic stuff but it seemed like a really quirky setting to me.

• SSIS Dashboard v0.4

  Following the post on SSISDB script on Gist, I’ve been working on a HTML5 SSIS Dashboard, in order to have a nice looking, user friendly and, most of all, useful, SSIS Dashboard. Since this is a “spare-time” project, I’ve decided to develop it using Python since it’s THE data language (R aside), it’s a beautiful & powerful, well established and well documented and with a rich ecosystem around. Plus it has full support in Visual Studio, through the amazing Python Tools For Visual Studio plugin, I decided also to use Flask, a very good micro-framework to create websites, and use the SB Admin 2.0 Bootstrap admin template, since I’m all but a Web Designer. The result is here: https://github.com/yorek/ssis-dashboard and I can say I’m pretty satisfied with the work done so far (I’ve worked on it for probably less than 24 hours). Though there’s some features I’d like to add in t future (historical execution time, some charts, connection with AzureML to do prediction on expected execution times) it’s already usable. Of course I’ve tested it only on my development machine, so check twice before putting it in production but, give the fact that, virtually, there is not installation needed (you only need to install Python), and that all queries are based on standard SSISDB objects, I expect no big problems.   I've used MS office for many years now. Especially powerpoint. One of the strengths is that it defines and separates the concepts of template and theme. A theme can be saved and contains fonts, colours, and a set of images that can be reused every time you create a new presentation. This ensures that everyone in your organization uses exactly the same colours and fonts all the time. Now I know that you can download templates for LibreOffice, but I have not seen anything similar to the theme concept. The file extensions used in MS office are the following for the two concepts mentioned: Example Powerpoint template file name: mytemplate.potx Example Powerpoint theme file name: mytheme.thmx Now back to my question: Do these concepts and their separation exist in LibreOffice or OpenOffice? If so, how do I create them?

  Later this week, I will be heading to our annual South Florida .Net Code Camp, an all-day free “Geek Fest” taking place on February 12th, 2011.This year’s code camp will be conveniently taking place at Nova Southeastern University in Ft Lauderdale.   With more than 700 already registered, this year’s event is bound to exceed last year’s registration and attendance. We are also fortunate to have secured the backing of a large number of our kind sponsors, supporters and volunteers, with our efforts led by our chief organizer, Fladotnet founder and Microsoft MVP, Dave Noderer.   As a member of the volunteer organizing team, I have gotten a good exposure on what it takes to run a code camp and gotten to appreciate the tremendous amount of work such a large event takes to put together to handle logistics such as venue, food, speaker registration and scheduling, website updates; that of course in addition to the essential outreach efforts necessary to secure sponsorships.   As Dave puts it, Code Camp is a great venue for those who want to gain exposure and experience as technical speakers to try it out just as much as it being a forum for experienced speakers to share the latest on their topics of interest. So far, 65 speakers are already scheduled to speak, bringing us an array of diverse topics.   I will be speaking on ASP.Net MVC3, the Razor view engine and present a brief introduction to NUGet.   I have a Django application and a PyQt application that share a lot of code. A big chunk of the PyQt application are copied verbatim from the Django application's views. As this is a game, I have already an engine.py module that I'm sharing among the two applications, but I was wondering how to restructure the middle layer (what in Django corresponds to the largest part of the views minus the return HttpResponse part) into its own component. In the web application the components are those of a classic Django application (with the only exception that I don't make any use of models): the game engine the url dispatcher the template the views My PyQt application is divided into: the game engine the UI definition where I declare the UI components and react to the events (basically this takes the place of the template and the url dispatcher in the Django app) the controller where I instantiate the window object and reproduce the methods that map the views in the Django app

Replacing IDisposable with ICleanup The IDisposable implementation in the ViewModelBase class has been marked obsolete. Instead, the ICleanup interface (and its Cleanup method) has been added. Implementing IDisposable in a ViewModel is still possible, but must be done explicitly. IDisposable in ViewModelBase was a bad practice, because it supposes that the ViewModel is garbage collected after Dispose is called. instead, the Cleanup method does not have such expectation. The ViewModelLocator class (created when an MVVM Light project template is used in Visual Studio or Expression Blend) exposes a static Cleanup method, which should in turn call each ViewModel’s Cleanup method. The ViewModel is free to override the Cleanup method if local cleanup must be performed. Passing EventArgs to command with EventToCommand The EventToCommand class is used to bind any event to an ICommand (typically on the ViewModel). In this case, it can be useful to pass the event’s EventArgs parameter to the command in the ViewModel. For example, for the MouseEnter event, you can pass the MouseEventArgs to a RelayCommand<MouseEventArgs> as shown in the next listings. Note: Bringing UI specific classes (such as EventArgs) into the ViewModel reduces the testability of the ViewModel, and thus should be used with care. Sending messages to interfaces In V2, it was possible to deliver messages targeted to instances of a given class. in V3 it is still possible, but in addition you can deliver a message to instances that implement a certain interface. The message will not be delivered to other recipients. Use the overload Messenger.Default.Send<TMessage, TTarget>(TMessage message) where TTarget is, in fact, an interface (for example IDisposable). Of course the recipient must register to receive the type of message TMessage. Sending messages with a token Messages can now be sent through the Messenger with a token. To send a message with token, use the method overload Send<TMessage>(TMessage message, object token). To receive a message with token, use the methods Register<TMessage>(object recipient, object token, Action<TMessage> action) or Register<TMessage>(object recipient, object token, bool receiveDerivedMessagesToo, Action<TMessage> action) The token can be a simple value (int, string, etc…) or an instance of a class. The message is not delivered to recipients who registered with a different token, or with no token at all. Renaming CommandMessage to NotificationMessage To avoid confusion with ICommand and RelayCommand, the CommandMessage class has been renamed to NotificationMessage. This message class can be used to deliver a notification (of type string) to a recipient. ViewModelBase constructor with IMessenger The ViewModelBase class now accepts an IMessenger parameter. If this constructor is used instead of the default empty constructor, the IMessenger passed as parameter will be used to broadcast a PropertyChangedMessage when the method RaisePropertyChanged<T>(string propertyName, T oldValue, T newValue, bool broadcast) is used. In the default ViewModelBase constructor is used, the Messenger.Default instance will be used instead. EventToCommand behavior The EventToCommand behavior has been added in V3. It can be used to bind any event of any FrameworkElement to any ICommand (for example a RelayCommand located in the ViewModel). Updated the project templates to remove the sample application The project template has been updated to remove the sample application that was created every time that a new MVVM Light application was created in Visual Studio or Blend. This makes the creation of a new application easier, because you don’t need to remove code before you can start writing code. Bug corrections Some bugs that were in Version 2 have been corrected: In some occasions, an exception could be thrown when a recipient was registered for a message at the same time as a message was received. New names for DLLs If you upgrade an existing installation, you will need to change the reference to the DLLs in C:\Program Files\Laurent Bugnion (GalaSoft)\Mvvm Light Toolkit\Binaries. The assemblies have been moved, and the versions for Silverlight 4 and for WPF4 have been renamed, to avoid some confusion. It is now easier to make sure that you are using the correct DLL.   I just read this quote from Steve Jobs: "Doing LSD was one of the two or three most important things I have done in my life." Now I'm wondering: Has there ever been a study where programmers have been given drugs to see if they could produce "better" code? Is there a programming concept, which originated from people who where drug-users? Do you know of a piece of code, which was written by someone under the influence? EDIT So I did a little more research and it turns out Dennis R. Wier actually documented how he took LSD to wrap his head around a coding project: "At one point in the project I could not get an overall viewpoint for the operation of the entire system. It really was too much for my brain to keep all the subtle aspects and processing nuances clear so I could get a processing and design overview. After struggling with this problem for a few weeks, I decided to use a little acid to see if it would enable a breakthrough, because otherwise, I would not be able to complete the project and be certain of a consistent overall design"[1] There is also an interesting article on wired about Kevin Herbet, who used LSD to solve tough technical problems and chemist Kary Mullis even said "...that LSD had helped him develop the polymerase chain reaction that helps amplify specific DNA sequences."
