    We changed servers and installed all necessary software and just cannot seem to pin point what is going on. A simple CURL request does not return anything.   • Where can I find up-to-date information / walkthroughs on VS 2010 deployment?

Having heard Hanselman say this is something you can do within VS 2010 easily I set out too find information on exactly how to do this but can not seem to find anything. Ignoring the fact that most of the blog posts / articles are over a year old, there just seems to be no clear step by step information on how to do this.   • Strategies for when to use properties and when to use internal variables on internal classes?

    In almost all of my classes, I have a mixture of properties and internal class variables. I have always chosen one or the other by the rule "property if you need it externally, class variable if not". But there are many other issues which make me rethink this often, e.g.: at some point I want to use an internal variable from outside the class, so I have to refactor it into a property which makes me wonder why I don't just make all my internal variables properties in case I have to access them externally anyway, since most classes are internal classes anyway it aren't exposed on an API so it doesn't really matter if the internal variables are accessible from outside the class or not but then since C# doesn't allow you to instantiate e.g. List<string> property in the definition, then these properties have to be initialized in every possible constructor, so these variables I would rather have internal variables just to keep things cleaner in that they are all initialized in one place C# code reads more cleanly if constructor/method parameters are camel case and you assign them to pascal case properties instead of the ambiguity of seeing "templateIdCode" and having to look around to see if it is a local variable, method parameter or internal class variable, e.g. it is easier when you see "TemplateIdCode = templateIdCode" that this is a parameter being assigned to a class property. This would be an argument for always using only properties on internal classes. e.g.: public class TextFile { private string templateIdCode; private string absoluteTemplatePathAndFileName; private string absoluteOutputDirectory; private List<string> listItems = new List<string>(); public string Content { get; set; } public List<string> ReportItems { get; set; } public TextFile(string templateIdCode) { this.templateIdCode = templateIdCode; ReportItems = new List<string>(); Initialize(); } ... In the above case that answer would be 1 to get RRBB or BBRR. I feel like an algorithm to sort a partially sorted array would be useful here since a simple sort would give us the number of swaps, but we want the minimum number of swaps. Any ideas? This is allegedly a Microsoft interview question according to this.

Thanks for reading all of this. I've already implemented it and it works nicely, and I'm planning to extend it to validate the contents of IEnumerable fields and other fields that are Validatable. What I'm particularly concerned about is that if no ruleset is specified, the validator tries to use the name of the property as the ruleset name. (If you don't want that behavior, you can use [SuppressValidation].) This makes the code much less cluttered (no need to use [UseValidationRuleset("something")] on every single property) but it somehow doesn't feel right. I can't decide if it's awful or awesome. What do you think? Any suggestions on the other parts of this design are welcome too. I'm not very experienced and I'm grateful for any help. Also, is "Validatable" a good name? To me, it sounds pretty weird but I'm not a native English speaker.

  • How can I pass query string variables with NavigationService.Navigate?

    Greetings, Searched for this, but no luck. I'm attempting to pass query string variables (and then retrieve them) in my Silverlight 4 app. First I tried this this.NavigationService.Navigate(new Uri("/LoanProductionRegion?Elvis=Alive&ImHungry=true", UriKind.Relative)); But HtmlPage.Document.QueryString doesn't pick them up because they come after the anchor (the full url looks like http://localhost:1076/Dashboard.SLTestPage.aspx#/LoanProductionRegion?Elvis=Alive&ImHungry=true). I tried to put the vars in front, such as this.NavigationService.Navigate(new Uri("?Elvis=Alive&ImHungry=true/LoanProductionRegion", UriKind.Relative)); this.NavigationService.Navigate(new Uri("/?Elvis=Alive&ImHungry=true/LoanProductionRegion", UriKind.Relative)); But both result in a "Page not found" error. Anyone know how to achieve what I'm after?

I tried using window.location for this, but that does not work.     When doing an upcast or downcast, what does really happen behind the scenes? I had the idea that when doing something as: string myString = "abc"; object myObject = myString; string myStringBack = (string)myObject; the cast in the last line would have as only purpose tell the compiler we are safe we are not doing anything wrong. So, I had the idea that actually no casting code would be embedded in the code itself. It seems I was wrong: .maxstack 1 .locals init ( [0] string myString, [1] object myObject, [2] string myStringBack) L_0000: nop L_0001: ldstr "abc" L_0006: stloc.0 L_0007: ldloc.0 L_0008: stloc.1 L_0009: ldloc.1 L_000a: castclass string L_000f: stloc.2 L_0010: ret Why does the CLR need something like castclass string? There are two possible implementations for a downcast: You require a castclass something. When you get to the line of code that does an castclass, the CLR tries to make the cast. But then, what would happen had I ommited the castclass string line and tried to run the code? You don't require a castclass. As all reference types have a similar internal structure, if you try to use a string on an Form instance, it will throw an exception of wrong usage (because it detects a Form is not a string or any of its subtypes). Also, is the following statamente from C# 4.0 in a Nutshell correct? Upcasting and downcasting between compatible reference types performs reference conversions: a new reference is created that points to the same object. Does it really create a new reference? I thought it'd be the same reference, only stored in a different type of variable. Thanks

    I want to save to db some strings with image. Image can be taken from gallery or user can set the sample one. In the other activity I have a listview which should present the rows with image and name. I'm facing so long this problem. It occurs when I wanna display listview with the image from gallery, If the sample image is saved in the row everything works ok.   • If .net sha1 hash expects a byte array, and php sha1() wants a string, can I match the results?

    I have a set of bytes I want to apply an sha1 hash to. One hash will be in .net, the other in PHP. Then I'll test to see if they match. In .net, you can create a byte array and use sha.ComputeHash(). byte[] data = new byte[DATA_SIZE]; byte[] result; SHA1 sha = new SHA1CryptoServiceProvider(); // This is one implementation of the abstract class SHA1. result = sha.ComputeHash(data); In PHP, you call sha1($string). I can't do anything about the .net side of the code, but how can I get the same hash out of PHP that .net will generate? Please note: I am ONLY able to work on the PHP side of this. The .net stuff is fixed and can't be modified. Thanks!
