• Persistent network share connection not working with runas

  If I use runas /user:DOMAIN\user cmd.exe (using XP), previously mapped persistent network drives are considered unavailable. net use shows: Status Local Remote Network ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unavailable H: \\SERVER\SHARE Microsoft Windows Network dir H: fails with "The system cannot find the path specified.". The connection is easily revived with `NET USE H: \SERVER\SHARE': not asked for a password when I do this. What is going on? Can I make Windows safely revive this drive automatically when it is first accessed.

• Mac Leopard Server Apache Permission Denied

  I've setup the web server successfully on Mac Leopard Server and sites work fine within the DocumentRoot directory. I have mounted a volume which has restricted access to users within a group. I would like to point the web server to directories within this volume. Can I add the user the web service is using to the group that has access to this Volume, if so: how do I find out what the user is? I can confirm the web server is pointing to the right directory as log files show the full directory path. When you access the site's URL, it shows Access Forbidden.

• Using wget to download pdf files from a site that requires cookies to be set

  I want to access a newspaper site and then download their epaper copies (in PDF). The site requires me to login using my email address and password and then it permits me to access those PDF URLs. I'm having trouble 'setting my session' in wget. • Can't connect to domain computers until reboot

  I have a domain with about 300 Windows 7 and XP machines, with the domain controllers running Server 2003. Sometimes, I lose the ability to communicate/authenticate with some of the machines until I reboot my computer. This also happens from other computers and regardless of user account and operating system. In other words, say I'm on ComputerA, and I can't connect to ComputerX. I can go to ComputerB and connect to ComputerX, but ComputerB may not be able to connect to ComputerY. If you reboot ComputerA, then it will be able to connect to ComputerX again. Here are some messages from various utilities: sc: [SC] OpenSCManager FAILED 1722: The RPC server is unavailable. mmc (compmgmt.msc): Computer (computer name) cannot be managed. • Career opportunities for mid-20 .Net developer

  Recently, I have moved to Toronto and started exploring career opportunities here. My first impressions about .net developer/architect career are really controversial. Here options that comes to my mind right now: Grow as a developer, lead and solution architect in large and well-known company, like Logitech or IBM. Doing .net development medium size (10-30) software shops Joining some start-up guys First one, seems very bureaucratic with kills all programming fun, that is such valuable to me. And there is not a lot of start ups, that are based on MS technology stack. Good mid-size company seems like a best fit to me, since I can have a lot of fun, doing new projects. Previously I have been working at large (5000+) outsourcing provider as a .Net developer. I was kind of a 'vanilla' time, because our team were always doing massive scale projects from scratch, on latest .Net stack. I would really appreciate if you share pros and cons of path, that you have chosen and what you value most in your current project. I'll start: Pros for Mid-size You are really close to business and application consumers, without all bureaucratic papers Cons It seems, that career oportunities of vertical growth is rather limited, once I have to switch to my own company or join development team of some big players.

I was able to run vanilla lighttpd like this: ./lighttpd -f lighttpd.conf And then I compile/install the source of fastcgi, and I add the following in my lighttpd.conf: fastcgi.server = ( "/fastcgi_scripts/" => (( #"host" => "127.0.0.1", #"port" => 9091, "check-local" => "disable", "bin-path" => "/usr/local/bin/cgi-fcgi", "docroot" => "/" # remote server may use # it's own docroot )) ) But lighttpd won't start after I add the above. • Computer science curriculum for non-CS major?

  Hi all, I would like to have some ideas for building up my foundation CS skills. I have started programming computers 10 years ago and have made a pretty good career out of it. However, I cannot stop thinking that the path that brought me here was very particular, and if something goes wrong (e.g. I get laid off) it would be harder to find a job here in the US on the same salary level, OR in a top company. The reason I say that is that I am a self-learner; my degree is not in Computer Science so although I master C/C++/Java, I do not have the formal CS and mathematical background that many other software developers (esp. here in the US) have. When I look at job interview questions from Apple, Google, Amazon, I have the impression that I'd flunk those technical interviews at some point. Don't get me wrong, I know my algorithms and data structures, but when things dive too deeply into the CS realm I am in trouble. What can I do to close the gap? I was thinking about a MSc in CS, but will I even UNDERSTAND what's going on there if I'm not a CS undergrad? Should I go back to basics and get a BSc in CS instead? I always tend to go into self-study mode when I want to learn new stuff, but I have the impression that I will need more formal education in CS if I want to have a shot at working at those kinds of companies. • Nginx no longer servers uwsgi application behind HAProxy - Looks for static file instead

  We implemented our web application using web2py. It consists of several modules offering a REST API at various resources (e.g. /dids, /replicas, ...). The API is used by clients implementing requests.py. My problem is that our web app works fine if it's behind HAProxy and hosted by Apache using mod_wsgi. It also works fine if the clients interact with nginx directly. It doesn't work though when using HAProxy in front of nginx. My guess is that HAProxy somehow modifies the request and thus nginx behaves differently i.e. looking for a static file instead of calling the WSGI container. Unfortunately I can't figure out what's exactly going (wr)on(g). Here are the relevant config sections of these three component's config files. At least I guess they are interesting. • xkb layouts not working (in KDE?) after upgrade from Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04

  I customised my keyboard layout in 9.10 by editing the appropriate /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/ file. After upgrading to 10.04 I noticed it had overwritten all my modifications, so I recovered the layout and overwrote the symbol file's base entry. Sadly KDE (and, presumably, the entire OS) seems to ignore the files altogether. The help files don't mention anything about modifying layouts anyway (and the layout switcher seems to be using setxkbmap, which uses the above path according to its man page), so I'm at a bit of a loss. Do I need to compile this into some other format somehow or how do I get it to work?

  I have apache2 running on a Mac OS X (10.6) machine, and it is currently serving PHP pages fine, using php5_module but I would like to configure fastcgi_module to handle the php pages. • KVM Virtual guest Paused on Reboot

  I'm running REHL 6 and just installed a Ubuntu Server Guest via KVM set to start at boot. This works correctly and the guest loads, but it loads "paused" and requires that I manually un-pause it.   I'm trying to set up the following: At work I want to create a local port that will forward to port 22 on my home server. ssh -L 56879:home:22 username@home -p 443 right now I'm testing this on my two machines at home, my ubuntu server and the other my iMac. iMac: 192.168.1.104 ubuntu: 192.168.1.103 iMac - ssh -p 443 -L 56879:192.168.1.103:22 [email protected] in my ~/.ssh/config on my iMac I have port set to 56879. so when I do git pull remoteserver:/path/to/repo.git on my iMac git will use ssh client on my iMac and use port 56879 since setup in config which should forward to 22 on my ubuntu machine. I keep getting connection refused? Any ideas?

  I'm trying to understand how libraries work. for example I downloaded a tarball and extracted it. Now I do "./configure", it searches in pre-defined directories from what I understand for certain library files. What does it do then? it creates a makefile, and the makefile contains the paths to these libraries? than I do "make", it complies the source code and hard-codes the locations of the libraries? am I correct? I do not really understand if libraries are files with pre-defined paths or the OS somehow gives access to the libraries through system calls. another example, I complied something on my computer than moved it to a remote server, the executable needs mysql libraries to work, the server has mysql but for some reason when execute the file it tells me "can't find libmysqlclient.so.16". is there a solution for this? is there a way to know where is tries to locate this file or give it another path? I can't compile it on the server since it has no compiler and I don't have root access to install packages last question is if in the sequence "./configure","make","make install" the "make install" command is the only one that actually puts files outside the directory in which these files reside? if for example the software will be installed in /usr/local/ is the "make install" command the only one that will require "sudo" before it? let me see if I got it correctly: "./configure" creates the Makefile according to the location of various files on your system. "make" compiles the source code according to this makefile. and "make install" moves the files to their appropriate location. I know this has been very long I thank anyone who had the patience to read my question :)

  Hi I downloaded some file and everytime I try to copy it or move it somewhere I get these errors Windows cannot access the specified device, path , or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item. You need permission to perform this action You require permission from "user(where this is my pc name/myusername)" to make changes to this file. Yet I am an admin and it is my only account on this computer and it saying to me I need permissions to open it up from "chobo2" user yet that's the account I am logged in as. I don't get it. How do I disable this stupid message so I can access every file I want. I am using windows 7 ultimate 64bit. As far as I know I have full permissions set so I don't know why I am getting this.

  I have a user logon script that copies a file over to a subfolder of the current user's profile path: Script (only showing the line that isn't working): copy /Y c:\records\javasettings_Windows_x86.xml "%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\OpenOffice.org\3\user\config">>c:\records\OOo3%USERNAME%.txt 2>&1 To diagnose why it wasn't working, I did a somelogfile.log parameter on the group policy script and found that what the above command is translating to is this: C:\WINDOWS>copy /Y c:\records\javasettings_Windows_x86.xml "C:\Documents and Settings\test2\Application Data\OpenOffice.org\3\user\config" 1>>c:\records\OOo3test2.txt 2>&1 So the question is, how do I get rid of (exorcise) the " 1" in that line? Update 1: So the reason the script wasn't working was that the creator didn't have any permissions on the directory. I fixed the permissions, and now the file works but! I still have the " 1" showing on all the logs and would like to know why.

  My /home partition consists of an entire physical disk. It is formatted as btrfs. I want to snapshot it. I'm confused regarding subvolume naming, in particular. I am aware that there are similar questions, but each similar question seems to be asking something different from what I'm asking (and they are older, which means probably outdated, given the rapid development of btrfs). For example, the answer to this question is apparently not the answer to my question because my /home partition is a separate volume and the man page for btrfs shows a different command for creating snapshots now. another similar problem, no solid solution. someone else as confused as me on the naming issues My question: Starting simple: is this the correct command to take a simple snapshot of my home partition? btrfs subvolume snapshot /home/@home /home/@home_snapshot_20120421 I got really brave and tested it and it does not work. The error is error accessing /home/@home. As shown below, @home is listed. I'm obviously confused on subvolume names. Do I need to use them in creating snapshots? Some examples show taking snapshots of home using /home as the source parameter, but based on examples of root volumes, it seems to me that I need to use /home/@home. Would this command work? And if not, why? btrfs subvolume snapshot /home /home/@home_snapshot_20120421 Is the @ just a naming convention? Is it meaningful at all? Here's some output that may be relevant: btrfs subvolume list /home ID 256 top level 5 path @home I'm not sure what that means, exactly. When I try btrfs device scan it gives an error (e.g. unable to scan the device /dev/sda1). My file system doesn't have any errors. Everything is fine.

• Why does WebDAV fail from inside home network

  On my OSX server there is a folder that is configured in the Server App to be accessible via WebDAV. This folder is used to sync OmniFocus. On my router, I have set up a dynamic dns. When I am outside my home network (physically away or when connected via a vpn), I can connect and sync fine via: https://<server name from dyndns>/<username>/<path to WebDAV folder> However, when I am in my home network, the connection to WebDAV does not work (other connections, AFP, f.ex, do work). What could be some reasons why I can't connect to WebDAV from within my home network? What log files could give hints and where are they stored? I am running OSX server 10.9.3. and server.app. Thanks for your help.

  Thanks for taking the time to read this. I am having trouble getting my startup scripts to run correctly on the domain I am administering. Before anyone gets upset and says "go read xxx article from microsoft",... I have. I am simply missing something or not understanding it properly. I understand how to assign the script, what I am curious about is where exactly it should be placed in the Windows folder structure. I have been able to get them to work by creating a share folder called "scripts" and pointing to that exact unc pathname IE \servername\scripts\xxx.bat. However, I would like to do it properly, would someone please tell me where they should be placed in Win2003 server, and what the path name should be when assigning a group policy to do something that applies to computer specific properties? Your assistance is very much appreciated by a junior admin trying to learn some new tricks!
