• Help with dual booting Windows 8.1 Professional and Ubuntu 13.10

  I recently installed a clean version of Windows 8.1 Professional on my Lenovo Y500 (with Samsung 256GB 840 Pro SSD). I have Windows all set up and running normally. I am trying to dual boot Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 13.10, but the installation procedure don't allow me to either "Install alongside..." or shows my SSD partitions correctly when I chose the "Something Else" option. I have created a 25GB partition of free space in the Windows disk manager, but on the installation screen on Ubuntu, it shows the whole drive as a free space. I have tried installing with a burned .ISO disk and a bootable USB, the results are the same for both. • Video screen recording + add text (subtitle), export as .flv. What programs?

  I have to record a video to showcase a tool I've made. It's going to include my talking, but I also want some overlay text (subtitles) for people who doesn't have sound. I'm looking for a program that will let me add a text overlay (as subtitle) for my video, and if possible, export it as .flv . I've tried this so far: Used CamStudio for recording, using their lossless format. Converted the .avi file to a .flv using Any Video Converter (free version) I've been having some trouble with the output of CamStudio, some programs can't play the file right, it skips forward and backward. (VLC, Adobe Media Encoder CS4) So I'm looking for a program that accepts videos from CamStudio*, can add text to my video, and hopefully export as flv. *(If that's not possible I'm open for other recording programs). I'd like to ONLY use free programs, and I'm on Windows XP. Looking forward to your help :)

• jQuery - discrepency between classname and selectors

  I have the following code that I wrote, which I personally found to be pretty nice. It takes a <ul> and it drops down the contents when clicked. But I am having a disconnect here in comprehension, and one I had to do what I feel is a 'dirty hack' to solve. The problem is that I do not want the class `'sidebar-dropdown-open' to be so 'hardwired' in the plugin. However I discovered that there is a very stark difference between... $('.sidebar-dropdown-open') and 'sidebar-dropdown-open and even '.sidebar-dropdown-open.   I have tried several different ways to achieve reading my amazon purchased e-books on ubuntu without success. Maybe i'm trying to do the impossible? Is there support for kindle-on-pc on ubuntu 12? If so please be so kind as to share with me how to. Please don't suggest kindle cloud, unless you know how to copy paste from kindle cloud... The books seemed to be encoded so that caliber cannot open them/convert them so unless i misunderstand thats out to. new install of ubuntu 12.04, i don't own a kindle so i just need a viewer

• Good Slideshow DVD programs?

  I want to burn a bunch of pictures to a DVD slideshow. However, Google reveals that there are tons of software programs that claim to do this. Can anyone recommend one of them without me having to download 20 of them only to discover half don't work and the other half are free trials to $29 software that doesn't work either? The only one which I have tried out so far is DVD Slideshow GUI, which is simply a mess of programs. It was free, but it crashed a whole bunch, spit errors at me when i tried to preview and never worked when I tried to export the slideshow to mpg.

• How to trim/cut clips with VLC

  I am running VLC 1.1.5 64-bit on Mac OS X 10.6.6. On the web I found instructions saying I should click on Video-Advanced Controls in the menu bar to reveal options that let me trim and cut video clips. However, there is no such option in my copy of VLC. What I want to do is cut a ~2 minute portion from the middle of a two hour footage (in MXF format that QuickTime can't open) that I've got. Is there another way to trim and cut clips of videos in VLC? Or should I use other (preferably free, Free, and open source) software? Thanks.

• Charging by the hour/project

  This is related to a question I asked earlier - How to end a relationship with a client without pissing them off? What are your obligations when charging by the hour vs charging by project? If you agree to take on a project, give a rough estimate that it might take 10 days for you to work on and charge £X per hour - are you obligated to work for free after those 10 days are up and you have still not managed to complete your project due to unanticipated issues? What if you have delivered the project but bugs are found - should you fix these bugs for free if the 10 days are up or should you charge your client? Also, for the above project, what should be the result when you start on the project, but after the 10 days for whatever reason you have to give up and tell your client that you cannot do it anymore? I realise that this does nothing to build your reputation and relationship with the client but are you obligated to pay back the money paid to you or do you just deliver the half/nearly completed source code and help them find someone else to complete it? The reason I am asking the above questions is because I am very new to freelancing and would like to know how to deal with the above situations if they ever crop up. Thanks!

• How to determine non-movable files in Windows 7?

  Is there a way to determine which unmovable files are preventing Shrink Volume from releasing the full potential free space? Background: I have a 90 GB partition with Windows 7 on it, and 60 GB free space. I want to shrink it down to about 40 GB, and use the reclaimed 50 GB for a separate data partition. The Shrink Volume tool in Disk Management is only willing to give me 8 GB back. My understanding is that this is because of immovable files. I've followed the instructions found here, which involved disabling hibernation, pagefile, system restore, kernal dump, making sure all related files were deleted, and defrag'ing. I have successfully followed those same instructions before on this same drive, and partitoned the original 150 GB space into 90 GB and 60 GB, but I'm not so lucky this time.

• Equivalent of phpMyAdmin for MSSQL?

  Is there any webinterface for administrating MSSQL similar to phpMyAdmin (for MySQL)? I want a self-service setup where developers can create a database through webinterface and upload/download backups of the database without local access. I've considered phpMSAdmin, but it hasn't had a release since 2006 so I'm not sure its worth the effort of setting it up. If there is something else (free or not-so-free) that would be great. My question is similar to this one posted 2 years ago, but no good webinterface was found back then. SQL Web Data Administrator seems interesting, but it lacks a few features - most notably creating new databases (also, not updated since 2007).

• Ubuntu 10.04 hung on unattended apt-get upgrade?

  I'm looking into why our ubuntu web server hung this morning and see that there was some package upgrades a few hours prior to the problem. I was able to ssh into the system and get a snapshot from top: top - 08:13:54 up 210 days, 8:25, 2 users, load average: 433.30, 422.40, 375.70 Tasks: 1192 total, 381 running, 810 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie Cpu(s): 0.5%us, 6.1%sy, 0.0%ni, 93.4%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 49549772k total, 48518392k used, 1031380k free, 960152k buffers Swap: 11595768k total, 279368k used, 11316400k free, 39355664k cached This is a 16 processor system, so I would typically expect a load in the low teens. I tried to restart apache, which didn't work, and subsequently had to do a hard reboot to get it working again (which it is). One thing I found was that the server did an unattended package update. Is it possible that upgrading php or curl (which our web sites use) might have caused apache to stop responding? • Oracle Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) Developer Certification

  I would like to gain the "Oracle Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) Developer" certification. According to this page I have to take a number of classes each of which costs up to a couple of thousand GB£. Is this really the only way to obtain the certification? Can I not just buy a certification guide book from amazon and just sit the requisite tests? At the moment I have no Java EE experience and I'm finding it impossible to get interviews for the jobs I'm interested in. I'm hoping this will at least help me get my foot through the door.

• How to share my localhost over the internet?

  I really want to share my localhost over the internet to show my friends the progress of the website we're working on, so that I don't need to upload it to the public server each time I make a change. showoff.io is not free and localtunnel gives me "failed to authenticate" when trying to upload my public key (a lot of people seem to have this problem and there doesn't seem to be a solution for this). Does anyone know any other free service I can use or any other solution at all? I'm using a Mac. Thanks. UPDATE: with localhost I mean a web server running on my computer, I have a dynamic IP address and no I'm not behind a router (just using a wireless modem).

• Reclaiming deleted disk space from file vault

  I have my main user account encrypted with file vault. After deleting some data (like 20 GB) my free space on the hard drive hasn't change (yes I emptied the trash, confirmed that the files are actually gone, etc,etc). I also tried "erasing free space" in the disk utility app. I logged off, and rebooted and so far that space hasn't been reclaimed. I'm assuming file vault or disk utility has some method of reclaiming but I can't find it. Any ideas?

  What good software is available (free or not free) to help me keep track of information relating to hundreds of servers, their relationships to each other (parent/child, category, type), and information on connecting to them, as well as possibly showing a picture or grid of some kind that allows me to report these relationships and key information to my supervisor. I am trying to avoid the "spreadsheet solution" or "visio solution" because I want to share this information and make changes with other persons in my server team. In other words, the solution I am looking for is a cross between a spreadsheet solution and a visio solution, providing both graphing and configuration information WITHOUT monitoring, and in a consistent format.

• debian dependencies (libssl-dev and libncurses5)

  I'm trying to install under RVM the Ruby Enterpise (REE) under debian My debian is squeeze (uname -r) 2.6.18-194.26.1.el5.028stab070.14xen i did try to install ree but it complains that it is missing libssl-dev and libreadline5-dev. I did update my lenny to squeeze, but i didn't update the kernel, since its a production server. The operational system is already updated and upgraded sources.list: deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free deb-src http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main contrib non-free deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main deb-src http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main I did try to install it using the following command: apt-get install libssl-dev libreadline5-dev But unfortunately i'm getting the following problems: The following packages have unmet dependencies: libreadline5-dev: Depends: libncurses5-dev but it is not going to be installed libssl-dev: Depends: libssl0.9.8 (= 0.9.8o-4squeeze1) but 0.9.8o-6 is to be installed E: Broken packages I was thinking to reinstall those packages and install again, but it has too many dependencies, and it is a production server, that i would like to know if there is any other way to fix it. Or at least to double check if it is necessary to reinstall both :-/

• Logitech Microphone (AK5370) inaudible volume

  I bought this microphone from Amazon last week. It's detected just fine in 12.10. I can see it in the sound preferences. The problem is that the volume is so low as to be inaudible, even when turned up to maximum in this dialog. It is working, as I can see that the meter responds to noise, but it's just too low. alsamixer's control is the same, so that doesn't help. I tried messing around in pulseaudio too, but to no avail. • Adding files and folders to a Root Folder (inode/directory)

  Ok so I'm fairly new to Ubuntu and wasn't even the one who put it one this computer(my friend did while I was storing it at his house because I was in the middle of transitioning between houses), but It's on here so I need to learn what I can so I can use it more effectively. My question at the moment is "Would it be safe to add files/folders to a folder (inode/directory) that requires Root access?" I continue to be informed by the system that the directory I am using is running low on space which I found odd seeing how I should have a lot more room on this computer. That's when I started looking at the directories and found that there are two with a bunch of un-used space on them. One says it has 46.9 GB of free space and the other has 24.9 GB of free space. Seems like a complete waste to not use that space and yet they both say they require Root access to add to them. I know that Root folders and files are normally all system folders and files. I also know that changing or deleting them can mess up the computer which right now I cant afford to do. I just don't know if it would mess anything up to add something to those folders. Thank you in advance to anyone who takes the time to reply and try to teach me about how all that works. I really do appreciate it and will do the same if by some crazy (completely unlikely) reason I have an answer to your question. :-)`
