• Typical Search, Result and Detail Workflow Staying Within an Android Tab

  So, I've been banging my head looking for a good solution for a few days and am stuck. I have a search screen (Activity) in a tab, and after the user enters a value and clicks "search" I would like the results to come back in that same tab, and then if an item from the results is selected, to show more detailed results, in that same tab. I have it all working now in separate activities, and even the first step working in a tab, but as soon as I call the activity to process he search results... i.e. startActivity(i); for the results Activity, the results displayed are not in the tab! I am having a very difficult time getting this flow to work all under a tab. Any thoughts on how to make this happen? I keep hearing that Android views should be used instead of activities, but am I then to assume that all the logic I have right now for 3 activity needs to go inside 1 activity and then I need to handle setting the content and state for each of these cases? Plus, won't the history stack not work as pressing the back button will take the user out of the application, instead of taking them from say the search result to the search screen, or the details to the search results, etc. This seems like a mess. Can anyone show a more complex example of tabs or how one might have a simple search, result and detail workflow staying in a tab? I have seen a few questions on this concept of keeping activities "within a tab", but no good resolution. Please help.

• I really need help resolving a Window Vista BSOD (Blue Screen Crash) on my desktop

  Hi, thanks for taking the time to read this. I'll get straight to the details. My desktop is on the fritz; it keeps going to blue screen with the stop message of 0x0000007E immediately after the loading bar of vista, right before transitioning to the account selection screen. My desktop runs on a dual-core 32-bit processor with windows Vista Home(?) installed. I have 3 GB of ram as two separate modules, a 1GB acer module and a 2GB geil module. I have an ati video card, unfortunately I cannot recall the exact name but the chipset is ATI and the manufacturer is Sapphire and the card is on the lower end. My hard drive is 320GB (i think) partitioned into two. The C:\ partition is red lined, while the D:\ partition is still pretty empty. As per the advice of my friend, i tried restarting the system with the graphics card removed. Upon failure, i repeated the process removing one RAM module one at a time, but the system still failed to load. Vista would attempt to repair the system and it would initially report that the system was fixed, but vista really failed to fix the problem. After removing the memory modules, vista started to report it's inability to fix the problem. I tried running on safe mode and the driver listing would always stop at crcdisk.sys. I ran memory diagnostics using the windows memory diagnostic tool found in the screen after vista's failed attempt to fix the problem with no luck. the problem details are as such: Problem Event Name : StartupRepairV2 Problem Signature 01: AutoFailover 02: (vista's version number?) 03: 6 04: 720907 05: 0x7e 06: 0x7e 07: 0 08: 2 09: WrpRepair 10: 0 OS Version: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.256.1 Locale ID 1033 any correct advice would be appreciated as i really need my pc to work so i can work on my projects. kinda sad, but i'm college of computer science and i have no idea what to do :P

• Compiz and Desktop Effects on Netbook with External Monitor

  I have an Acer Aspire One AO150 and am having trouble plugging in an external monitor under Ubuntu 9.10. There were no problems under 9.04. If I plug in an external monitor once the machine is already up, then bring up the 'display' application to activate it, it basically hangs. There are no problem under these circumstances if I have desktop effects turned off. I've seen a few mentions of this problem on the Ubuntu forums, but never a solid solution. Any ideas? A few more details after a question below. The machine does not respond to its keyboard commands to switch to an external monitor, nor does it respond to Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc to switch out of X. The pointer is visible on the monitors (at the edge of each) and is frozen as a 'busy' cursor, but with no animation. The kernel does respond to SysReq commands (REISUB). In the latest attempt I had the external monitor active earlier, then removed it and activated desktop effects. Upon plugging in the eternal monitor then bringing up the display application, it hangs.

• Lucene Search Returning Extra, Undesired Records

  I have a Lucene index that contains a field called 'Name'. I escape all special characters before inserting a value into my index using QueryParser.Escape(value). In my example I have 2 documents with the following names respectively: Test Test (Test) They get inserted into my index as such (I can confirm this using Luke): [test] [test] [\(test\)] I insert these values as TOKENIZED and using the StandardAnalyzer. When I perform a search, I use the QueryParser.Escape(searchString) against my search string input to escape special characters and then use the QueryParser with my 'Name' field and the StandardAnalyzer to perform my search. When I perform a search for 'Test', I get back both documents in my index (as expected). However, when I perform a search for 'Test (Test)', I am getting back both documents still. I realize that in both examples it matches on the 'test' term in the index, but I am confused in my 2nd example why it would not just pull back the document with the value of 'Test (Test)' because my search should create two terms: [test] and [\(test\)] I would imagine it would perform some sort of boolean operator where BOTH terms must match in that situation so I would get back just one record. Is there something I am missing or a trick to make the search behave as desired?

• My search what the Cloud will mean for my Work, part 2

  My experience with the cloud and why work will change and not disappear. Until now I have multiple experiences with the cloud, for the most good. i have worked on multiple cloud solutions in the past but let me describe them as 0.x versions. For me the 1st real serious cloud experience was a bit more than 1 year ago, when our company switched from an in house server to Microsoft BPOS as a complete replacement. Since we are a small consultancy firm and don’t have that much else to do than consulting, our IT requirements are quite simple. We need Mail and Storage space for our documents. With the in house server we had multiple outages during a year, mostly by lack of administering. Being consultants in the field and hardly having time to maintain a server, BPOS was and still is for us the right solution. Since the migration we have less outages and a much more robust solution. Have we run into issues with BPOS for our own environment? No not that I’m aware of. Based on this experience I made a stance about deploy ability of BPOS and cloud solutions, they are suitable for MKB (Dutch for Medium and Small Businesses). Most Small businesses don’t have the amount of work to hire a full time it admin. Hiring a service provider to maintain their own server might be even more costly than hiring an admin. So seeing the capabilities of BPOS and the needs of most businesses I see it as a great solution that gives the business a complete Server replacement solution for a fixed price per user. resulting in a clear budget for IT spending, something most small businesses were looking for, for a long time. So right now I’m deploying BPOS with a customer, and I run into some of the Cloud 1.0 issues. In my opinion BPOS is a good working Cloud version 1.0 solution. What do I mean with 1.0? Well 1.0 is mostly a tested solution (unlike 0.x versions) but still have quite some limitations caused by too few market experience. in my opnion this is also the reason why we don’t see that much BPOS customers yet and why I think Office 365 will make a huge difference. What I have seen of 365 shows me it is a Cloud 2.0 version, meaning it has all needed features and is much more flexible to the customer. This is also why I see changes happen in my work field, changes and not unemployment due to Cloud solutions. Cloud 1.0 solutions gave me the idea that if every customer would adopt them I would be out of work. But in reality Cloud 1.0 solutions are here just to set the market needs. The Cloud 2.0 and higher versions will give the customer much more flexibility, but also require the need for a consultant. Where the 1.0 versions are simple to setup and maintain, the 2.0 solution needs more thought upfront and afterwards. ie. BPOS in its 1.0 version brings you a very simplified Exchange 2007 solution, Suitable for some customers. Looking at Office 365 you receive almost a full blown Exchange 2010 solution. I expect this to be even more customizable in the next version. In my search for the changes to my work I try to regulary write a post with my thought around the Cloud and the impact on my work as a consultant.   We are given an array of integers where all elements are between 0-9. have to start from the 1st position and reach end in minimum no of moves such that we can from an index i move 1 position back and forward i.e i-1 and i+1 and jump to any index having the same value as index i. So far, I've: Added my data folder into the Indexing service configuration Ensured that PDF files are configured to index "file properties and contents" Rebuilt the index from scratch But, when I search, I can only search for PDF file names, not the contents of them. When i search for anything even command I either get an empty list or a list of short cuts with the names Programs Documents Files ... They all have the default white paper icon. If I click on them I get an error message that says Internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened. Any ideas? thanks

  I have googled for the answer all day and still couldn't find an answer. I have a virtual subdomain www.static.example.com which is a mirror site of www.example.com. It means I have just one root folder for subdomain and domain aswell. I want to redirect crawlers to different robots.txt file - robots_static.txt when they see .static in url in which I will forbid indexing via /disallow command. I want to do this because I have duplicated content in Google search results. Subdomain is showing the exact same content as the main domain. Does anyone know how could I achieve that crawlers sees robots_static.txt instead of robots.txt? • failing to establish connection between Postgres db and gwt

  Has anyone ever tried to combine the use of google guice with obfuscation (in particular proguard)? The obfuscated version of my code does not work with google guice as guice complains about missing type parameters. This information seems to be erased by the transformation step that proguard does, even when the relevant classes are excluded from the obfuscation. • Stop yahoo from opeing in second tab when opening chrome

  I recently downloaded Vuze (torrent client), which as well as installing, installs a whole bunch of rubbish toolbars (mostly by an outfit called 'Spigot') and tries to change your default search engine to Yahoo. In Safari and Firefox, ive managed to change it back but i Chrome although ive deleted all the addons and restored my default search engine when ever i open up Chrome i get two tabs 1) my default homepage and 2) yahoo search page. Any idea were i can disable this Yahoo search page, ive looked in the settings but could find any where obvious (ive set back my default search engine to Google and deleted any add ons) but this still dosnt do it.. any ideas ? My last resort is to do a factory reset of Chrome, which i dont want to do as i have all my settings in there.

• Can I manually add a thumbnail web page to the Chrome homepage?

  Is there a way to manually add a web page to the 8 thumbnails that appear when you open Chrome? I want to add Google Maps for easy access. The Google front page already shows up so I presume the Google Maps page never will as it's a subset of Google (i.e. I get to it via the main Google front page). I know I can add a shortcut to the toolbar but would rather add it as a thumbnail. And while I'm here, is it possible to increase the number of thumbnails that appear? I'm running the release/stable version of Chrome in Windows XP.

  After Firefox broke my add-ons yet again, I decided to give Chrome a second look. To my surprise all the add-ons are available. What I am missing though is the drop-down search bar. First, I've disabled the search from the location bar. Now I want to add a combo box that is always visible where I can select the engine to do searching. I downloaded a search extension (Search Box), but it's an icon that needs to be clicked before you can interact with it: TL;DR; I want a box that is always visible and can change the search engine from a drop-down. Is there an extension like this available in Chrome?

• Pinned program on the taskbar is not grouping in Windows 7 Ultimate

  Previously, I had pinned Google Chrome Dev to the taskbar. Being that it was unstable and crashed frequently, I decided to uninstall it. Before uninstalling, however, I did not un-pin its icon from the taskbar. Afterward, I installed Google Chrome Stable and launched it from the old pinned icon. This resulted in a new icon appearing in the taskbar. I figured this happened because the icon was originally for the Dev build, so I unpinned the icon and re-pinned Google Chrome. I launch Google Chrome again, but I still get a new icon! Re-pinning the icon should have fixed it, no? Why aren't my Google Chrome windows grouping together?

• How to setup Lucene/Solr for a B2B web app?

  Given: 1 database per client (business customer) 5000 clients Clients have between 2 to 2000 users (avg is ~100 users/client) 100k to 10 million records per database Users need to search those records often (it's the best way to navigate their data) Possibly relevant info: Several new clients each week (any time during business hours) Multiple web servers and database servers (users can login via any web server) Let's stay agnostic of language or sql brand, since Lucene (and Solr) have a breadth of support For Example: Joel Spolsky said in Podcast #11 that his hosted web app product, FogBugz On-Demand, uses Lucene. He has thousands of on-demand clients. And each client gets their own database. They use an index per client and store it in the client's database. I'm not sure on the details. And I'm not sure if this is a serious mod to Lucene. The Question: How would you setup Lucene search so that each client can only search within its database? How would you setup the index(es)? Where do you store the index(es)? Would you need to add a filter to all search queries? If a client cancelled, how would you delete their (part of the) index? (this may be trivial--not sure yet) Possible Solutions: Make an index for each client (database) Pro: Search is faster (than one-index-for-all method). Indices are relative to the size of the client's data. Con: I'm not sure what this entails, nor do I know if this is beyond Lucene's scope. Have a single, gigantic index with a database_name field. Always include database_name as a filter. Pro: Not sure. Maybe good for tech support or billing dept to search all databases for info. Con: Search is slower (than index-per-client method). Flawed security if query filter removed. One last thing: I would also accept an answer that uses Solr (the extension of Lucene). Perhaps it's better suited for this problem. Not sure.

• Add Social Elements to Your Gmail Contacts with Rapportive

  Would you like to discover more about your contacts?  Xobni is a great tool for this in Outlook, and thanks to a small plugin for Gmail, you can get similar functionality right from your favorite webmail app. Setup Rapportive on Your Gmail Browse to the Rapportive site (link below), and click install to add it to your browser.  Rapportive currently only supports Firefox and Google Chrome.  In this test, we installed it on Google Chrome.  Notice that Chrome warns Rapportive may access your private data from Gmail, though Rapportive says that they only use this data securely on your computer or their servers. Next time you log into Gmail, open a message to see the new Rapportive sidebar.  Click Log in to get started. Choose if you want to let Rapportive to access your data. Finally, choose whether to stay logged into Rapportive or to log out when you log out of Gmail.   Using Rapportive Now, when you open an email, you should see more information about your contact on the right side of the message where you usually see Google AdSense ads. You may see an avatar, short bio, and links to their social networks.  You can add notes about a contact also, which lets you use Rapportive as a CRM. You may see more information on some contacts.  Here we see a contact that shows recent Tweets and links to several social networks. Take Rapportive Further You can add more features to Rapportive with Raplets, which are small extensions that add more information or CRM functionality.  To add these, click the Rapportive button on the top of Gmail, and select Add Raplets to Rapportive. Find a Raplet you want, and click Add This. A popup will open to give you more information about the Raplet; click the Add button at the bottom if you still want it. And, if you’re wish to close Rapportive without logging out of Gmail, click the Rapportive link in Gmail and select Log out. Conclusion Whether you want to find out more about your contacts or keep track of notes about them, Rapportive is a great way to do this from Gmail.  With tools like this, Gmail gets a bit more powerful and feels more like a desktop application. • Make WebStart Java desktop application to start on system startup on Windows and Mac

  I developed small cross-platform (Windows and Mac) SWT desktop application. It is distributed with WebStart. So far so good, everything works. I've got a new requirement to make my app start on system startup (with no user interaction). What is the best way to accomplish that? In JNLP file I've got this: <shortcut online="false"> <desktop/> <menu submenu="CompanyName"/> </shortcut> On Windows WebStart creates a desktop link [app_name].lnk and it points to javaws.exe and then some Java cache file as a parameter with funny name like ..\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\4\2c0a6a781-213476. I can possibly programmatically find that link on user's machine by name... erm... and then copy it into user's Startup folder. I can see a problem here though as user can disable WebStart desktop shortcut creation option all together. On Mac WebStart pops up a dialog to prompt user for the location where to create an [app_name].app (user is allowed to change link name there!) file that launches an application. On Mac I don't event know where the Startup folder is located (and it seems to be much more complex there). Is there Java library out there that abstracts start app on system startup concept on different platforms as SWT does for GUI abstraction?
