• how much knowledge do you need to call yourself a programmer?

  There is a guy who calls himself c/c++ programmer, but what does he actually know? What knowledge about c++ does he have because there are so much to know about c/c++. So he knows the core language? He knows visual c++? He knows how to program with WIN API? He knows how to program in linux with gtk? Network programming? The real question is: What do you need to know, to be called a c/c++ programmer ,because I know c and I really do not feel like I own the power of programming... please illuminate my path.

  First of all I'm 26 and I'm asking this question because I want to see how do you manage your time. Also I'm interested how do the programmers with a family(wife, several kids) manage their time. I'm asking this due the fact that I'm working aprox 7,5 hours at work (9 to 5), spent 1,5 hours on the way to/from workplace, and when I'm home I must cook/clean/etc and LEARN! And I have the impression that I don't have enough time to learn. Did you have a period similar in your life? To want to learn another language/improve your development/other skills? I saw here and on SO that there are a lot of peoples with +10k points, this in my mind means that they stay on blogs/forums more than 15 hours a day.   I am developing a simple mainly static website using WordPress (because maybe in the future I will add some dynamic content) for a company. The new site have to follow the structure of the old site that requires the presence of a vertical main menu in the left column that contains the link to all the statics pages in the site. This is the old site structure: http://www.saranistri.com/ Now I have installed a new WordPress test site (this is only a test site): http://onofri.org/example/ As you can see in the left columns I have put two main menu vetical widgets that implements a possible choise for the maun menù (the top menù upon the header must be eliminated in the final implementation) I want to know some opinions about: 1) Which of the two version is better? Do you have some additional ideas about the CSS style of this vertical menu? 2) What could I do to give a more professional look to this site?   I want to start looking for jobs in great companies and I have four years of enterprise corporations development, three years with C#.NET and alomst one year with Ruby On Rails, JS, etc... But when I look up interview questions from Google, Amazon, Fog Creek, DropBox, etc... they are really targeted at students that are coming fresh out of college and still remember what was Dynamic Programming and Dijkstra algorithms ... but I don't! :( It has been a while for me ... If a I need a sort algorithm I would either Google it or there already is a library and method that does it for me. So what should I do? Do they realize that this guy is not coming from college and will ask more general questions about software architecture or nop! I should go back find my old Data structures book from the storage and read them? In that case wht books and language do you recommend to hone my skills?

• What Java class should I use to represent a Vector?

  Does Java have a built-in Vector class suitable for handling collision detection / response? It should have methods like subtract(Vector v), normalize(), dotProduct(Vector v), ... It seems logical to use java.awt.Rectangle and java.awt.Polygon to calculate collisions. Would I be right to use these classes for this purpose? I understand collision detection; I'm only wondering what approach to it is idiomatic in Java. I'm new to the language and to application development in general.

• What makes C so popular in the age of OOP?

  I code a lot both in C and C++ but did not expect C to be the second popular language, slightly behind Java! http://www.tiobe.com/index.php/content/paperinfo/tpci/index.html I'm curious as why, in this age of OOP, C is still all that popular? Note that 4 out of top 5 popular languages are all "modern" object-oriented capable languages. Now I agree that you can do OOP in C to some extend, but that's sort of painful and not quite elegant! (well at least compared to C++ I guess) So what makes C this popular? efficiency? being low-level? or the vast majority of libraries that already exist? ... or something else?

I picked most of my C# by following the code-base or random google searches on what I wanted to do at that point (like threading in C#). I feel a time has come to invest some time into understanding the language internals and also understanding the .NET framework from an architectural point of view. Can someone recommend the "gold standard" text/resource for accomplishing these? What about that resource makes it the best? What were your experiences with it?

• What can i do if i made a bootable usb stick, but it doesn't work properly?

  Currently i have ubuntu 11.10 as an os and i want ubuntu 12.04 lts. I made a bootable usb stick with the program 'startup disk creator'. Everything went well (i choose the language, and then i choose ' install'), the purple screen with the title 'ubuntu' come up, it started loading too. After a time black screen come up with white letters last sentence was something like: panic occured, switching back to text. I tried it several times, the same thing happens. i tried to click on ' trying ubuntu from usb too, but it didn't work either . Please help me!

• Can all code be represented as a series of Map / Filter / Reduce operations?

  I have recently been refactoring large chunks of code and replacing them with Linq queries. Removing the language bias - Linq is essentially a set of Map / Filter and Reduce operations that operate on a sequence of data. This got me thinking, how far would I theoretically be able to take this. Would I be able to rewrite the whole code base into a series (or even a single) of Map / Filter and Reduce operations. Unfortunately I get paid to do useful stuff, so I haven't been able to experiment much further, but I can't think of any code structure that couldn't be re structured as such. Side effected code can be dealt with via monads.. Even output is essentially mapping memory addresses to screen addresses. Is there anything that couldn't be (theoretically) rewritten as a Linq query?

  For more precision: I'm runnning Ubuntu 12.04 I'd like an indicator which shows up to the left of the date/volume/wifi icons If possible I'd like to be able to change the translation language The indicator could use internet based translators (google translate etc.) or have a complete library come with it so translations can be obtained offline. Relating to usability: I'd like to have it work in a way where you click on the indicator icon and you can start typing either directly or once a window has opened and it instantly shows the translation you need (with your target languages pre-set or determined in options).

  I had a question to canonical, but that got closed. Is this ask ubuntu? Sure doesn't seem like it. I had a valid question, but since it contained critisism of one of the ubuntu teams, it got closed down. All I am after is a 100% translated ubuntu into my language. But my local team do not work, so this will not happen. So much for an open community. Well, I will think real hard next time I can help someone, and I will probably not. Since I can't get any help. I have one question, and this is directed at someone in charge of ask ubuntu. Why does a valdid question get locked down? My closed question Yeah, this is such a good comunity. • .htaccess mobile redirect issues

  I'm trying to set up a mobile redirect for a site with 2 subfolders, and I cannot get both to work at the same time. This is the structure of the site www.mysite.com/EN/ www.mysite.com/ES/ This is a bilingual site so each subfolder contains the files corresponding to each language version. Then I was using a 301 redirect, and setting up the index in /EN/ as the main index. Everything was getting redirected to it. I was using DirectoryIndex index.html Redirect /index.html http://www.mysite.com/EN/index.html and several Rewritecond to redirect mysite.com and old urls to the new URL. It worked fine before I decided to add a mobile version - m.mysite.com. I used the solution provided in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3680463/mobile-redirect-using-htaccess, and it redirects my mobile version properly, but now the desktop is both working. Besides, my mobile version must be bilingual as well.

• Ubuntu 13.10 change first weekday to Monday in calendar applet

  Before the update (I was using 13.04), editing: sudo gedit /etc/default/locale so that LC_TIME="en_GB.UTF-8" does the job. However in 13.10, this does not work anymore. I've tried editing: sudo gedit /usr/share/i18n/locales/en_AU sudo gedit /usr/share/i18n/locales/en_GB sudo gedit /usr/share/i18n/locales/en_US so that first_weekday 2 in each of the files, but this also does not work. • Looking for parallel programming problem

  I am trying to come up with a problem that is easily solvable in a parallel manner and that requires communication between threads for a test. I also am trying to avoid problems that require require random waits, which rules out dining philosophers and producer-consumer (bounded buffer), two of the classics. My goal is for the student to be able to write the program in less than 20-30 minutes in front of a computer not knowing of the problem beforehand. (This is to prevent preparation more than to come up with something novel.) I am trying to stress the communication aspect of the program, though the multi-threaded nature is also important. Does anyone have some ideas? Edit: I'm using Google Go for the language and testing comprehension of the goroutines/channels combo vs an actors library that I authored.

  My case I want to get the capability of doing anything in C# from building applications to solving problems. I searched for and tried to read books. Then one of the experts said that reading books will not make any good and that to learn, you have to solve real world problems in C#, and he gave me some problems which I previously solved in C++. The thing is that while I know the internal logic of solving the problem, I don't know how to implement it using C# efficiently. I know the message to pass but not the exact way to pass it. I did a program to solve a problem, then find out there are much easier ways of doing it wherever I was doing it in tougher way. What I need to get hold of the language and get the ability to code in C# proficiently?

• How to get local point inside a body where mouse click occurred in box2d?

  I need to find out the point inside a body, lets say a rectangular object, where the mouse was clicked on. I'm makin a game where the force will be applied depending on where the mouse was clicked on the body. Any ideas? Will body.GetLocalPoint(b2vec2) work? I tried by passing the mouse coordinates when the click occurred when inside the body but if the body's position is (400,300) in world coordinates then for trace(body.GetLocalPoint(new b2vec2(mouseX,mouseY)).x); I get some value between 380 to 406 or something (eg. 401.6666666). I thought getLocalPoint will give something like x=-10 when clicked to the left of the centre of body or x=15 when clicked to the right. Language is As3 btw.
