  The University of Antioquia in Colombia teaches its introductory programming courses in Lexico, a Spanish-based, object-oriented .NET language. The intent is to teach programming concepts in the students' native language before introducing English-based mainstream languages. There are many other Non-English-based programming languages and there is even a related question in Stack Overflow. I have several questions regarding these languages: Has anyone on this site learned to program using a non-English-based language? If so, how difficult was the transition to the first English-based language? Is there any research-based evidence that non-English speakers learn programming faster/better using languages with keywords in their native language instead of English-based languages?

• Is flash game development not considered 'proper' game development?

  I've come across this a couple of times. That flash game development is not 'proper' game development when compared to XNA or even Unity. Mentioned here: Need guidelines for studying Game Development Also here in some comments : Where to start with game development? This judgement also befalls java, according to some. Is it because in flash its so easy to draw graphics and to import and add on to the stage any element we want and also because flash needs a 'container program' to run and others don't? But flash is by far way easier to 'distribute' than any other of those mentioned above. Maybe except for iphone or android games.

  Which of these two programmers is "better", from a managerial standpoint? The first programmer is Albert. You tell Al to make a system that will pass you the salt at the dinner table. He does it in less than a day. It works fine. The second programmer is Ben. Ben is told to make a program to pass the salt, and after two days, he's still working on it. It will save time in the long run...if you need pepper, ketchup, etc. There isn't any clear indication that there will be a need for this, but it's not improbable. Who's the better programmer to have working under you, as a manager?

• Turbo C++ to Visual Studio 2010 migration [closed]

  OK, based on my previous questions and your help., I have gone to install Visual Studio Express. But now problem is, the programs which I successfully code at home on Visual Studio don't run on Turbo C++ compiler at school (assuming I type the program instead of exporting code). Is there anything I can do? Also I am just learning basic syntax and data handling, loops, structures, arrays and all. But Visual Studio has auto completion and pretty typing (which may be advantageous) but crap for a beginner getting hold on to language. Sorry, if I have been unclear. But what should I do? This will make me lazy programmer and will reflect in my grades. Is there any other IDE, which I can use, very similar to Turbo C++ and able to run in Windows 7 in fullsreen mode.

  I like to test kmymoney. When trying to install there are a lot of kde packages that are needed by this program. That's ok, I'm using Unity and there are no kde packages installed at this moment. So, when I like to remove all this packages after testing kmymoney, how can I do that? sudo apt-get install kmymoney >> /some/folder/kmymoney.txt gives me the output of apt-get, but that's not what I'm looking for. • Box2d too much for Circle/Circle collision detection?

  I'm using cocos2d to program a game and am using box2d for collision detection. Everything in my game is a circle and for some reason I'm having a problem with some times things are not being detected as a collision when they should be. I'm thinking of rolling up my own collision detection since I don't think it would be too hard. Questions are: Would this approach work for collision detection between circles? a. get radius of circle A and circle B. b. get distance of the center of circle A and circle B c. if the distance is greater than or equal to the sum of circle A radius and circle B radius then we have a hit Should box2d be used for such simple collision detection? There are no physics in this game.

• Developing for iOS on Linux

  I am looking for an engine or library to develop a game for iOS on Linux. High level, low level, GUI, no GUI, does not matter too much. I am really looking for anything. I'm not actually talking about deploying to iOS from Linux or anything like. I just want to do the bulk of the work on Linux, with minimal changes required to run it on iOS. Edit: YES, I do have access to a Mac, but it is limited. So I want to be able to work on the project on my regular Ubuntu box. Also, I am in the paid developer program, so I can deploy to iOS devices from the Mac.

• Creating a dynamically updateable website using Adobe Flash CS6 [closed]

  I need some help finding the appropriate tutorials for what I need. I have tried looking hard with no avail. I have Adobe Flash CS6, and I want to make a website using that software. I want the content to be uploaded onto a server so that the flash program can just fetch the information from the server and dynamically update the website itself, instead of editing the content on the flash website and reuploading the whole flash file (as I have done before). I also want the ability to have a guestbook and a contact form. Also, if possible, I wanted an ability to add tabs to the navigation bar dynamically instead of having to edit the flash file. Can anyone point be to a good tutorial which can help me with this? I have tried looking, and most of the results I get are completely useless to me.

• Where can I find the application executables in the filesystem?

  Where are executables for programs stored in Ubuntu? An application (Komodo Edit) is asking me to identify an application to be used as a web browser. I've become used to just entering the application name as a command for situations such as these, but this scenario got me thinking. I know in Windows it would just be the relevant application folder in the 'program files' folder, but I'm assuming things are a bit different on Linux? I thought somewhere like bin would be logical but this appears to standard Linux/Unix applications. Where would I find the binary executable for applications stored on my system?

• 3 Ways to Make Steam Even Faster

  Have you ever noticed how slow Steam’s built-in web browser can be? Do you struggle with slow download speeds? Or is Steam just slow in general? These tips will help you speed it up. Steam isn’t a game itself, so there are no 3D settings to change to achieve maximum performance. But there are some things you can do to speed it up dramatically. Speed Up the Steam Web Browser Steam’s built-in web browser — used in both the Steam store and in Steam’s in-game overlay to provide a web browser you can quickly use within games – can be frustratingly slow on many systems. Rather than the typical speed we’ve come to expect from Chrome, Firefox, or even Internet Explorer, Steam seems to struggle. When you click a link or go to a new page, there’s a noticeable delay before the new page appears — something that doesn’t happen in desktop browsers. Many people seem to have made peace with this slowness, accepting that Steam’s built-in browser is just bad. However, there’s a trick that will eliminate this delay on many systems and make the Steam web browser fast. This problem seems to arise from an incompatibility with the Automatically Detect Proxy Settings option, which is enabled by default on Windows. This is a compatibility option that very few people should actually need, so it’s safe to disable it. To disable this option, open the Internet Options dialog — press the Windows key to access the Start menu or Start screen, type Internet Options, and click the Internet Options shortcut. Select the Connections tab in the Internet Options window and click the LAN settings button. Uncheck the Automatically detect settings option here, then click OK to save your settings. If you experienced a significant delay every time a web page loaded in Steam’s web browser, it should now be gone. In the unlikely event that you encounter some sort of problem with your network connection, you could always re-enable this option. Increase Steam’s Game Download Speed Steam attempts to automatically select the nearest download server to your location. However, it may not always select the ideal download server. Or, in the case of high-traffic events like big seasonal sales and huge game launches, you may benefit from selecting a less-congested server. To do this, open Steam’s settings by clicking the Steam menu in Steam and selecting Settings. Click over to the Downloads tab and select the closest download server from the Download Region box. You should also ensure that Steam’s download bandwidth isn’t limited from here. You may want to restart Steam and see if your download speeds improve after changing this setting. In some cases, the closest server might not be the fastest. One a bit farther away could be faster if your local server is more congested, for example. Steam once provided information about content server load, which allowed you to select a regional server that wasn’t under high-load, but this information no longer seems to be available. Steam still provides a page that shows you the amount of download activity happening in different regions, including statistics about the difference in download speeds in different US states, but this information isn’t as useful. Accelerate Steam and Your Games One way to speed up all your games — and Steam itself —  is by getting a solid-state drive and installing Steam to it. Steam allows you to easily move your Steam folder — at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam by default — to another hard drive. Just move it like you would any other folder. You can then launch the Steam.exe program as if you had never moved Steam’s files. Steam also allows you to configure multiple game library folders. This means that you can set up a Steam library folder on a solid-state drive and one on your larger magnetic hard drive. Install your most frequently played games to the solid-state drive for maximum speed and your less frequently played ones to the slower magnetic hard drive to save SSD space. To set up additional library folders, open Steam’s Settings window and click the Downloads tab. You’ll find the Steam Library Folders option here. Click the Add Library Folder button and create a new game library on another hard drive. When you install a game in Steam, you’ll be asked which library folder you want to install it to. With the proxy compatibility option disabled, the correct download server chosen, and Steam installed to a fast SSD, it should be a speed demon.   In the next few lines, I will be providing a brief review of Wrox’s Professional ASP.NET Design Patterns by Scott Millett. Design patterns have been a hot topic for many years as developers looked to do more with less, re-use as much code as possible by creating common libraries, as well as make their code easier to understand, extend and collaborate on. Scott Millett’s book covered classic and emerging patterns in a practical presentation that demonstrated with thorough examples how to put each pattern to use in the context of multi-tiered ASP.NET applications. The author’s unique approach and content earned him much kudos in the foreword by Scott Hanselman as well as online reviews. The book has 14 chapters of which 5 are dedicated to a comprehensive case study. • Java code generation from class diagram

  I'm on the way developing a Java application where user can provide a class diagram and get the corresponding Java code. I don't know how can I let the user interactively draw a class diagram in Java. I am currently getting the required parameters like attributes, functions directly from the user, and then I render a class diagram for him. I show the class diagram on a jdialog. Is there a better way to do this? This is an example of a class diagram, I need to generate this from a Java program, given the values and relationship.

• Is measuring software project metrics popular in todays industry?

  I encountered a developer who wanted some outside advice on their teams project. I found out they're developing a huge software suite for the companies executives, project manager and developers that can calculate metrics automatically and graph them per iteration. As a student from a computer science background I know very little on metrics and their importance, but my questions are: Do most companies have some way, doesn't have to be an elegant program, to measure meaningful metrics? Which metrics, single or combined, help you narrow down your projects scope and estimates? As a person who analyzes metrics, how often do you base decisions off of them? IE. Tests failed per week is increasing drastically? Do you feel that the introduction of studying metrics has helped you understand the project better? • Is using MultiMaps code smell? If so what alternative data structures fit my needs?

  I'm trying to model nWoD characters for a roleplaying game in a character builder program. The crux is I want to support saving too and loading from yaml documents. One aspect of the character's is their set of skills. Skills are split between exactly three 'types': Mental, Physical, and Social. Each type has a list of skills under if. My Yaml looks like this: PHYSICAL: Athletics: 0 Brawl: 3 MENTAL: Academics: 2 Computers My initial thought was to use a Multimap of some sort, and have the skill type as an Enum, and key to my map. Each Skill is an element in the collection that backs the multimap. However, I've been struggling to get the yaml to work. On explaining this to a colleague outside of work they said this was probably a sign of code smell, and he's never seen it used 'well'. Are multiMaps really code smell? If so what alternate data structures would suit my goals?
