• Why does a JRuby application on App Engine take so long to start?

  I'm considering using JRuby on App Engine but have heard that Juby app on App Engine have a long startup lag. Why is this? Is it because the JRuby jar files are so large that a cold startup requires them to be loaded into memory before the app can start serving? That would be my guess but I'm not sure if that's a precise technical explanation.

• Base-camp Style Subdomains and IDs of Models

  I have an app that has Basecamp-style subdomains, that is, I have Projects, Users, Apples and Oranges. The Users, Apples and Oranges are all keyed to a Project and only exist in the http://project.myapp.com. I added a project_id to Users, Apples and Oranges and everything works, except of course that the ids of those three objects increment globally, and throughout my app I lookup objects by that id. This doesn't seem like best practice. Should I instead do lookups by a secondary key? How does that affect efficiency? If there's a good blog post that covers this, would be wesome.

  I am importing data from a CSV file. One of the fields has an accent(Telefónica O2 UK Limited). The application throws en error while inserting the data to the table.   I have a two data arrays sent in from a form, one called transloaded and the other video which is the actual form for the model. • Regex issue with comma's telling me there are 6 args, instead of intended 4

  I have a scenario outline table that looks like the following: Scenario Outline: Verify Full ad details Given I am on the xxx classified home page And I have entered <headline> in the search field & clicked on search When I click on full details Then I should see <headline> <year> <mileage> <price> displaying correctly and successfully Examples: |headline |year |mileage |price | |alfa romeo 166 |2005 |73,000 |6,990 | When I run my scenario it spits out that I have 6 args. But what I thought, I should only have 4 args: headline, year, mileage and price. I am thinking that it is taking the comma's and what is before and after it as two seperate args. Is there any way that I can make cucumber think that there are only 4 args with the example below? I have looked at messing around with regex but I dont seem to be getting anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  Hi, I'm fairly new to Shoes and ran into two problems. First I want to set a mask using a partially transparent png, like this: mask do image "images/stencilMask.png" end Is this possible somehow or can only vector shapes be used? Apart from that, I noticed a small bug(?) when trying to set a transparent color as a stroke on any kind of text, like this: title "Hello", :stroke => rgb(1.0, 0.0, 0.0, 0.5) The transparency simply isn't applied.   After I did brew update and brew upgrade, my postgres got some problem. I tried to uninstall postgres and install again, but it didn't work as well. This is the error message.(I also got this error message when I try to do rake db:migrate) $ psql psql: could not connect to server: No such file or directory Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"? How can I solve it? • RESTful design, how to name pages outside CRUD et al?

  Hi all, I'm working on a site that has quite a few pages that fall outside my limited understanding of RESTful design, which is essentially: Create, Read, Update, Delete, Show, List Here's the question: what is a good system for labeling actions/routes when a page doesn't neatly fall into CRUD/show/list? Some of my pages have info about multiple tables at once. I am building a site that gives some customers a 'home base' after they log on. It does NOT give them any information about themselves so it shouldn't be, for example, /customers/show/1. It does have information about companies, but there are other pages on the site that do that differently. What do you do when you have these situations? This 'home-base' is shown to customers and it mainly has info about companies (but not uniquely so). Second case: I have a table called 'Matchings' in between customers and companies. These matchings are accessed in completely different ways on different parts of the site (different layouts, different CSS sheets, different types of users accessing them, etc. They can't ALL be matchings/show. What's the best way to label the others? Thanks very much. =)

• Factory Girl sequence fails under autospec

  I have this Factory: Factory.define :email_address do |e| e.sequence(:address) { |n| "factory_#{n}@example.com" } e.validated true end When I run my specs with rake spec, it works fine. When I run autospec, it fails right away, claiming that the email address is being used twice in two different objects (there is a validation which restricts this).   I have a time_select in which I am trying to set a time value as follows; <%= f.time_select :start_time, :value => (@invoice.start_time ? @invoice.start_time : Time.now) %> This always produces a time selector with the current time rather than the value for @invoice.start_time. @invoice.start_time is in fact a datetime object but this is passed to the time selector just fine if I use <%= f.time_select :start_time %> I guess what I'm really asking is how to use the :value option with the time_select helper. Attempts like the following don't seem to produce the desired result; <%= f.time_select :start_time, :value => (Time.now + 2.hours) %> <%= f.time_select :start_time, :value => "14:30" %>

  As part of a larger regex I would like to match the following restrictions: The string has 11 digits All digits are numbers Within the first 10 digits one number [0-9] (and one only!) must be listed twice This means the following should match: 12345678914 12235879600 Whereas these should not: 12345678903 -> none of the numbers at digits 1 to 10 appears twice 14427823482 -> one number appears more than twice 72349121762 -> two numbers appear twice I have tried to use a lookahead, but all I'm managing is that the regex counts a certain digit, i.e.: (?!.*0\1{2}) That does not do what I need. Is my query even possible with regex?

• Git access on Heroku deployment and others: connection refused

  I have suddenly run into an issue using git. I created a new app, went to push to Heroku and now see: ssh: connect to host heroku.com port 22: Connection refused My other previously working Heroku apps no longer work, receiving the same error. Other Heroku commands work (create, info, db:push). I also see the error when accessing Git on my unfuddle accounts. I can SSH to other services, so it doesn't look like it's my machine. Any ideas?

• Will_paginate stuck on page 2

  For some reason my will_paginate collection is stuck on page 2. I have the usual links the view helper provides except every page after page one links to http://localhost:3000/ceo/gr_messages?page=2 I have tried to add the :order option with no luck. I have also ensured that the request is a get as mentioned on this page: http://wiki.github.com/mislav/will_paginate/simple-search Any other thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

• Saving a record in Authlogic table

  I am using authlogic to do my authentication. The current model that serves as the authentication model is the user model. I want to add a "belongs to" relationship to user which means that I need a foreign key in the user table. Say the foreign key is called car_id in the user's model. However, for some reason, when I do u = User.find(1) u.car_id = 1 u.save! I get ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid: Validation failed: Password can't be blank My guess is that this has something to do with authlogic. I do not have validation on password on the user's model. • Downsides to using FakeWeb compared to writing mocks for testing

  I never liked writing mocks and a while ago someone here recommended to use FakeWeb. I immediately fell completely in love with FakeWeb. However, I have to wonder if there is a downside to using FakeWeb. It seems like mocks are still much more common, so I wonder what I am missing that's wrong with using FakeWeb instead. Is there a certain kind of error you can't cover with Fakeweb or is it something about the TDD or BDD process?

• Never render a layout in response to xhrs

  Most of the time I don't want to render a layout when the request comes from AJAX. To this end I've been writing render :layout => !request.xhr? frequently in my controller actions. How can I make this the default? I.e., I'd like to be able to write def new Post.find(params[:id]) end and have the functionality be def show Post.find(params[:id]) render :layout => !request.xhr? end (I'm fine manually specifying a layout in the rare cases in which I want to use one.)
