• how to get more vacation time than "policy" allows

  At my company, the maximum vacation is 3 weeks for everyone but executives. Therefore I cannot even start negotiating for an increase to 4 weeks.. it's a non-starter because it's "against policy"... even though I think my experience and value to the company warrant it, and I've gotten 4 weeks at previous jobs. (I know I could have made a "hard stand" before taking this job, but that's water under the bridge) Any advice? I was kind of thinking of taking the "you want to be competitive" tack to get them to change their policy but I don't know where to find the kind of data I would need to support that.

• Returning status code where one of many errors could have occured

  I'm developing a PHP login component which includes functions to manipulate the User object, such as $User->changePassword(string $old, string $new) What I need some advice with is how to return a status, as the function can either succeed (no further information needs to be given) or fail (and the calling code needs to know why, for example incorrect password, database problem etc.) I've come up with the following ideas: Unix-style: return 0 on success, another code on failure. This doesn't seem particularly common in PHP and the language's type-coercion messes with this (a function returning FALSE on success?) This seems to be the best I can think of. Throw an exception on error. PHP's exception support is limited, and this will make life harder for anybody trying to use the functions. Return an array, containing a boolean for "success" or not, and a string or an int for "failure status" if applicable. None of these seem particularly appealing, does anyone have any advice or better ideas?

• Rotate an object given only by its points?

  I was recently writing a simple 3D maze FPP game. Once I was done fiddling with planes in OpenGL, I wanted to add support for importing Blender objects. The approach I used was triangulization of the object, then using Three.js to export the points to plaintext and then parsing the result JSON in my app. The example file can be seen here: https://github.com/d33tah/tinyfpp/blob/master/Data/Models/cross.txt The numbers represent x,y,z,u,v of a single vertex, which combined in three make a triangle. Then I rendered such an object triangle-by-triangle and played with it. I could move it back and forth and sideways, but I still have no idea how to rotate it by some axis. Let's say I'd like to rotate all the points by five degrees to the left, how would a code doing it look like?

  Is it possible to create a stand alone deb packages by merging dependancies without manual repacking.?? I've looked at this question but it doesn't really answer what I'm trying to achieve above. if possible how to do it? update 1 No tools available yet(?) So what about creating new deb package containing all packages which will copy dependencies to the cache and executing main package. Is it possible? update 2 Above method appears to be impossible because dpkg cant handle more than one operation at a time.   You've launched a large project at work, something that's been in progress and taken up large chunks of your life for more than 6 months. The post-launch triage is over. Tech support isn't calling you every hour because they don't know how to troubleshoot an issue. Your hours drop from 60+/wk to whatever is normal in your organization (which is hopefully less than 60+!). How much time do you (or your team) need before the next large project begins? I was asked this question at work and I think the ideal minimum is two weeks -- one week to clear your desk and inbox + one week to clear your head and remember what it's like to have a life outside of work. I'd frankly acknowledge that just being asked this question is a huge boon to work/life balance. But I do think it's possible to go too long in between.

I have been trying to see opportunities to use the pattern in my applications but I am having trouble seeing how to use it. Also, what are some signs that a fly weight pattern is being used when I read other peoples code? According to the definition it says: Use sharing to support large numbers of fine-grained objects efficiently. If I read it right Dictionaries and Hashtables could be instances of fly weights is this correct? Thanks in advance.

I still support Android 2.1 and above, but this means that I am unable to use features such as the action bar. Over 40% of my users are still running versions below 3.0, so I feel somewhat constrained about this. The problem is that 3.x was not very successful, so 2.3.x will be with us for some time.   Since a few years ago I stopped listening to CDs and began to listen to mp3 only. At the begining I continued to buy the CDs to support the artist, but later I started to buy the album direct online as mp3. The problem is, that by this, I don't have the lyrics for the songs. For the "commercial" or popular music it is not a big problem, but for others there are no lyrics on the Internet. How can I make use of the ID3-tag for the lyrics? Is there a music store that adds lyrics to the mp3 files sold? Can this be done with Ubuntu One? Another alternative would be to have an Internet lyrics databases like musixmatch.com supported.

  Last couple of weeks played around with Ubuntu 12.10. This is running as a guest on Virtualbox hosted at Windows 7. There have been some challenges with the Unity 3D stuff. Particular due to not supporting X11 release 1.13 till very recently. Since today we are able to download Virtualbox version 4.2.2 which has through guest additions also support for X11 release 1.13. SO far great work everybody. Since Unity now only runs in 3D mode it would be nice to access the graphics card directly from Virtualbox. lshw -c display shows: VGA compatible controller; product: VirtualBox Graphics Adapter. QUESTION: how to get the 3D and other graphics directly supported by the hardware ie Nvidia GeForce M310

  Background: I am going to design a firewall-like application (with GUI) which will include several functions such as Packet sniffing and packet filtering. Both of the functions should be implemented to support different protocol levels including application, transport, network and link layer. I only know a little in C#.Net programming to perform the IP packet sniffing. It is also known that packet filtering requires the techniques in WFP or LSP and packet sniffing in application requires dll hooking. Questions: I am not sure which programming language(either C++ or C#) would be suitable for designing such an application described above. • Where does a scrum master draw the line with blocking issues?

  I understand the concept that a Scrum Master should remove impediments. However I'd like to know where exactly the line should be drawn. For example a team member might have an impediment whereby they need to get support to log onto a live server and get some details. They can't progress a bit of work until this is done. Its a blocking issue essentially. But should it be the Scrum master that goes to the Ops department and does this for the developer or if the developer can do it themselves should they just do it themselves. At what point does an issue become a blocking issue?

  I have two identical table ie all the columns are identical and one of the datatype is Text, one is varchar(255) and the rest are int. Lets say the table name is 'AAAAA'. Table AAAAA was processed and backed up earlier this month. Both the tables were storing data and now the second table is only storing data. I need to find unmatching records from the second table (BBBBB) which is storing data right now and add those records to Table AAAAA. Your help will be highly appreciated. I tried to use 'EXCEPT' but it does not support text datatype.

  We are trying to figure out the best practice for working with very large DBs in Java. What we do is a kind of BI (business Intelligence), i.e analyzing very large DBs, and using them to create intermediate DBs that represent intelligent knowledge of the DBs. We are currently using JDBC, and just preforming queries using a ResultSet. As more and more data is being created, we are wondering whether more appropriate ways exist for parsing and manipulating these large DBs: We need to support 'chunk' manipulation and not an entire DB at once(e.g. limit in JDBC, very poor performance) We do not need to be constantly connected since we are just pulling results and creating new tables of our own. We want to understand JDBC alternatives, with respect to advantages and disadvantages. Whether you think JDBC is the way to go or not, what are the best practices to go by depending on context (e.g. for large DBs queried in chunks)?

  I have an issue with Google Analytics, can't seem to find a guide how to activate Demographics and Interests reports.
