    Our client wants to support both SQL Server and Oracle in the next project. Our experience comes from .NET/SQL Server platform. We will hire an Oracle developer, but our concern is with the DataAccess code. Will NHibernate make the DB Engine transparent for us? I don't think so, but i would like to hear from developers who have faced similar situations. I know this question is a little vague, because i don't have Oracle experience, so i don't know what issues we will find.

    Hi, I have a webpage underconstruction. I want to notify the people who visit it about its under-construction nature. For that I wanted to show a small transparent or transluscent page on the above page as shown here http://img17.imageshack.us/i/normalpagewithasmallpag.png/ You may notice that i want that page to appear at the center of the webpage overlayed on the original page with a cross at top-right corner. Clicking on that cross may close this small page revealing the page behind it so that the users may see what has been developed so far. I hope you guys have some suggestions for me. I know its possible with javascript but don't know how...any tutorial if available will also help. Thanks a lot.

    I'm working with a java.util.concurrent.ThreadPoolExecutor to process a number of items in parallel. Although the threading itself works fine, at times we've run into other resource constraints due to actions happening in the threads, which made us want to dial down the number of Threads in the pool. I'd like to know if there's a way to dial down the number of the threads while the threads area actually working. I know that you can call setMaximumPoolSize() and/or setCorePoolSize(), but these only resize the pool once threads become idle, but they don't become idle until there are no tasks waiting in the queue.

  • What is the best way to get support from microsoft developers [closed]

    I have a problem at my production web, that I am not able to solve. I am not able to reproduce the problem in stage or development. It only appears when the website is under heavy load. I think it is solvable if somebody who has a very good understanding of the internals of FormsAuthentication would have a look at it by logging into our system. It should be at least Scottgu! Somebody told me that Microsoft Premier Support is a good choice for this kind of problems. We have no MSDN subscription or other connection to microsoft that enables us to use MPS. Is there a way to get support on a incident base? Are there other ways to get this kind of support?   • Sharing user controls acrros multiple websites

    Hello, I am currently working on a project which involves three different websites with a lot of common functionality. At the moment the common functionality is placed in a different website full of user controls. The problem is sharing the user controls across the multiple websites. Looking around on SO and other websites, the only solution seems the be using virtual directories. As this is a workable solution (we us this at the moment) it doesn't seem as a "clean" solution. Which "best practices" exist on sharing common functionality (including the GUI/HTML) between different site? Is it (for example) possible to create a single Web Application project and deploy subdirectories (each with their own web.config) to different production environments?

  • How to get DayNames from language only in .NET

    Assume that I only have a country code (en, de, fr) and I need to display the weekdays in this language. I know about RegionInfo and CultureInfo - but I can't find a solution. If I create a country info from (for an example) "en" I have no DateTime info in it. It would also be OK to just take the first matching Region. For an example en-US for en or de-DE for de. I don't know if there are differences in DayNames but I know there are some for the months. de-DE Februar - de-AT Feber -- anyhow I don't care. Event if it may be "a bit different" (to see Februar instead of Feber) - it is still German. And that's what I want to achive - get en an write Monday - get de and write Montag... Is there a way to create a region just from a language code?

  • What's all the hype over objectsets in Entity Framework 4?

    I am an intermediate user of EF in .net 3.5 and have recently moved to working with .net 4. One thing i keep coming across when reading various tutorials is the use of ObjectSets instead of ObjectQuerys and that they are a great new feature. What is so great about them?   • Problem with ranking of search results in SharePoint 2007 if using the CONTAINS predicate

    While writing a front-end for the SharePoint Search web service for work, I did some quick testing with the MOSS Search Tool to make sure things were working right under the hood. What I found was that queries composed only of CONTAINS predicates (FREETEXT ones were fine) would have a rank of 1000 for any results that were returned. According to the documentation (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms544086.aspx): "If the query returns a document because a non–full-text predicate evaluates to TRUE for that document, the rank value is calculated as 1000." Given that the behaviour I am seeing seems to contradict the documentation, is it the case that all queries that use only the CONTAINS predicate will produce ranking like this?

    I am a little confused how jQuery stores data with .data() functions. Is this something called expando? Or is this using HTML5 Web Storage although I think this is very unlikely? The documentation says: The .data() method allows us to attach data of any type to DOM elements in a way that is safe from circular references and therefore from memory leaks. As I read about expando, it seems to have a rick of memory leak.     We are having some difficulties connecting our Java SE standalone client with the EJB module deployed on a remote GlassFish server. Pointers to how we are supposed to connect our client would be appreciated. The closest we are getting, got us the error: "Error in GIOP magic". I read that jms are using port 7676 as a broker port for a bunch of dynamically generated ports, but can't figure out how to specify those ports in order to create proper port-forwards.

  • Feasability of reverse engineering some embedded code

    All, My company is in the situation where we are using an embedded control system from another company in another country. We do not have the source code or the schematics to this system, and the manufacturer doesn't want to release them, seemingly at any price or under any terms. We are thus stuck with a 6 month turn around to get even a small modification done, and they can basically charge any amount they want. Legal aspects aside, would it be at all feasible to reverse engineer the embedded code back into C? Do any companies exist that could do this for us? Thank you, Fred

    I saw a post on Oslo about making us obsolete. I just happened to listen to the latest Deep Fried Episode with Brian Noyes. They were talking about SharePoint and Windows Workflow and how the "dream" of Windows Workflow is to let mere Business Analyst Drag and Drop their way to a functioning service. I am a newbie dotnet developer, and afraid that by the time I get to Consulting "Level" my skills would be obsolete. Should I abandon learning basic skills and just learn how to work with Frameworks and Packaged applications such as SAP, SharePoint, BizTalk. Am I wasting time trying to learn Expression Trees and Func of T's?

  • Configuring IoC container from modules/plug-ins ?

    Hi guys, i am in big dilema.. I am working on highly modular web app in ASP.NET MVC 2 (in fact, core will be super lightweight, all work on modules/plugins). I found MEF pretty useful for modules discovery, but i dont want to us it as IoC container. There is pretty good chance that I will need advanced features of "true" IoC container, so I would like to use Unity. And here is the problem : how to allow modules to configure container (programatically) = register their own types (mvc controllers, custom implementations of services...) at application start without making hard dependency on Unity in all modules ? I know about Common Service Locator project, and it seems pretty good, but this interface co container only allows resolving types, not registering them (afaik). I really hope you can understand my point, I know my english is terrible (I am from non english speaking country :) Thanks a lot !

Concerns: * My goal is to pull up to 100 items at a time and send them as a batch to the next step. * If I use a ConcurrentQueue, I have to manually cause it to go asleep when there is no work to be done.     I have a situation where our developers extended a Third party database (MS SQL) by adding tables, views, stored procedures, and functions. Recently when the vender issued updates to the database they dropped all of our custom objects. The question now is what are some best practices that will allow us to extend the third party database but keep our objects safe from future updates? My first thought is to create a separate database but then I’m stuck with fully qualifying all the references back to the original database which may cause issues promoting database changes from test to production.

  • Java: IDE working well with Maven War overlays

    We have a Java EE 6 web application which is fully mavenized, and we use the Maven "war overlay" facility to add customer specific files, and which currently runs in Glassfish 3.1. We have traditionally used Eclipse for development, but I have found that the combination of Maven processing and War deployments may not be optimal in terms of deployment times, and that the mavenization allows us to use any IDE with good Maven support. Therefore is Eclipse the best bet for our particular scenario (maven war overlays - glassfish, and debugging it) or is e.g. Netbeans or IntelliJ better? Please, back opinions with actual experiences, thanks.

Regarding the multithreading, what should be used? The reactive extension seem to be a good choice. Has anyone tried this in a real world project? Are there better options? I had bad experiences with the .NET thread pool in the past.

We have the ADO.NET and with the more improved Entity Framework for Data Access. And ASP.NET for WEB UI. And even WCF for Facade and SOA. But what in the middle, what do we have for the Business Layer? Is it just Referenced DLLs? How do we deal with the Application Pulling this days? I remember using COM+ 10 yeas ago because the IIS couldn't handle the pressure. Is Spring.Net is the best option available for injection? Thanks, Ronny
