  • Learning PHP: Good examples of "build-this" based lessons?

    - by DavidR
Last summer I learned HTML and CSS for a job, mainly through tutorials and a sort of "build this" method, that is, I'm given a goal and have to try to figure out how to build it myself. Is there a place with some examples to teach someone with this method? My boss wants to get me going on PHP this summer, and I need to refamiliarize myself with it over the next week. Most people send me to Php.net to follow the documentation, is there another good method out there?

  • JavaScript Resource Management Design Pattern

    - by Adam
As a web developer, a common problem I find myself tackling is waiting for something to load before doing something else. In particular, I often hide (using either display: none; or visibility: hidden; depending on the situation) elements while waiting for a background image or a CSS file to load. Consider this example from Last.FM. They overlay a semi-transparant PNG over each album art image so that it looks like it's inside a jewel-case. They let it load when it loads, so depending on your internet speed, you may see the art image by itself (without the overlay) temporarily. In this case, the album art looks fine without the jewel-case effect. But in similar situations, I have found that I don't want the user to see the site's design mangled as resources incrementally load. So, in rare cases I have hidden everything from the user until the whole kit and kaboodle has loaded. But this is often a pain to write out, and may force the user to wait for a pretty long time to see anything (besides "loading..." text). I can think of (and have used on occasion) some obvious solutions/compromises: Use some inline CSS so that as certain parts of the DOM load and render, they will immediately have the correct size/position/etc. Immediately render the navigation part of the site, so that if the user wanted to use the current page purely to get somewhere else, they don't have to wait for the rest to load. Load pixelated images first as placeholders for layout while lazy-loading higher quality images as replacements. Something quirky like using a cute animated gif to distract the user during a "loading..." phase. Show useful information as a reference while loading the full UI. (Something akin to Gmail Inbox Preview, etc.) (Sorry if my question was basically just asked and answered...) Despite all of these ideas, I still find myself hoping there are better ways of doing some of these things. So I guess what I'm looking for is some inspiration and/or any creative ways of dealing with this problem that you guys may have seen out in the wild.

  • How to select an element by Class instead of ID in ASP.NET?

    - by firedrawndagger
I have a few scatter elements which I am grouping together using a class like so - . In my code behind, using C# I want to hide these elements, using something like instructions.Visible = false;. However I realize I can only do this in codebehind if I use ID but this will result in invalid HTML/CSS Selector since you can't have multiple ID's with the same ID name... Alternatively is there another way to group the controls if not by class?

  • Included php file calling Javascript function

    - by Illes Peter
    Hi there! Here's the deal. I've got index.php which links to an internal JS file in it's header. index.php then includes another .php file, which outputs this: + add file. addFile() is a Javascript function defined in the external JS file. By doing this nothing happens, the included php does not "see" the JS function. Encapsulating the JS in the included PHP makes it all work. But I don't want to do it that way. Any ideas? EDIT: here's the source <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <title>Archie</title> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8"/> <link rel="stylesheet" href="/screen.css" type="text/css" media="screen"/> <script src="/lib/js/archie.js" type="text/javascript"></script> </head> <body> ... ... //included php starts here <form action="/lib/course.php" method="post"> <fieldset> <div id="addFileLocation"></div> <a href="#" onClick="addFile()">+ add file</a> <input type="hidden" id="addFileCount" value="0"/> </fieldset> </form> //ends here ... ... </body> </html> and the js: <script type="text/javascript"> //Dynamically add form fields //add file browser function addFile() { var location = document.getElementById('addFileLocation'); var num = document.getElementById('addFileCount'); var newnum = (document.getElementById('addFileCount').value -1)+ 2; num.value = newnum; var newname = 'addFile_'+newnum; var newelement = document.createElement('input'); newelement.setAttribute('name',newname); newelement.setAttribute('type','file'); location.appendChild(newelement); } </script>

  • How to re-render a page from a Google Chrome extension?

    - by Dexter
I'm new to writing extensions for Google Chrome. I want to make an extension that only runs on a few pages (that I'll choose) and re-renders their CSS after the page has loaded (ideally I would like something similar to what you can do with GM_addStyle in greasemonkey scripts). How can I accomplish this in a Chrome extension?

  • Android button font size

    - by jonhobbs
Hi, I;ve been trying to create a custom button in android using this tutorial - http://www.gersic.com/blog.php?id=56 It works well but it doesn't say how to change the font size or weighting. Any ideas? There was another question on here and the only answer was to use html styling but you can't change a font size in html without using css (or the deprecated font tag). There must be a better way of setting the pixel size of the font used on buttons?

  • Learn ASP.NET or Python for web development?

    - by user300371
I am new to programming and only know html, css,PHP and would like to start learning another new language. I am focused on web development and would just like to get your opinion on ASP.net and python. Which language would serve me best in making sites as to general programming? ASP.NET or django python? I know Python is "easy to learn" and similar to PHP, but ASP.net is also a good language.

  • Is Prince the best way to PDF in Ruby on Rails?

    - by Angela
After several Google searches, it appears that the way to create PDF's in Rails from HTML and CSS (versus a new markup language) is to use Prince. With licensing at $3800 for my non-big-commercial app, I'm wondering if this is, in fact, consensus or people have an alternative they can share the what's and how's.

  • Creating a mobile version for my web app in CodeIgniter

    - by KeyStroke
Hi there, I'm using CodeIgniter to develop a new web app, and I'd like to create a mobile version that users get redirect to when they visit it from their phones. The mobile version of the app should have a different flow, so swapping CSS/HTML files in the code is not an option for me since the mobile version and the web version will handle things differently in their Controllers and Views, while sharing the same Models. Anyway how I could do this efficiently? Your help is much appreciated. :)

  • Non-Standard widget size for Android

    - by heorling
I have a use-case for a vertical 1x4 home screen widget on android. The supported size is 4x1 ie horizontal. Does anyone know if the vertical version can be implemented? I realize changing screen orientation would scrunch the widget together, which I'm fine with. Even better would be if there was an equivalent to "overflow hidden" in css. Has anyone come across a way to do this?
