• Compiz ( or even compositing in general) is not starting up when I login. Solution?

  Whenever I log into a desktop environment, it doesn't seem that compositing is starting. Unity 2D works fine, but when I go to Unity 3D Compiz doesn't start up. I have to type compiz --replace & in terminal every time I login. Another example is when I log into a Cinnamon session, theming support is suddenly gone (although this may be a separate issue). If it helps im using the latest (295.40) NVIDIA drivers. EDIT: I am having exactly the same issue in both cases, upgrading from 11.10 and with a clean installation, in 32 and 64 bits. Related post.

• Is there a version control system that can show changes to a specific method or function?

  Sometimes it would be nice to be able to say something like: (git|svn|hg|etc) diff Foo.c:main (git|svn|hg|etc) log log Foo.c:main to see the changes made to a specific function within a source file since the last commit, or the complete history of changes. My question is two-fold: Does something exist that does this? Would such a tool be practical? It would have to do some simple parsing of the code at each revision in order to compare different versions of the function; would the overhead be too much for it to be efficient?

• 12.4 LTS after update fails to login

  An update today (30-11-2012) on 12.4 lead to failure to log in. The system gets through its boot process then presents the logins, on choosing any of these immediately returned to log-in screen with no error. Machine is an AMD FX 64 on an Asus MB using the built-in graphics. If no one knows what this might be, what's the alternative distro to Ubuntu? It's the second time something like this has happened after an update in three months, kudos to the Ubuntu team but I need more reliability. Cheers, thanks to all.

• How to get VMware Workstation 8.0.4 work on Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit?

  I've bought VMware Workstation 8 just today. After the installation I launched it and the application noticed me that "several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel". During the process, VMware noticed me that was impossible to configure Virtual Network Devices and at the end, was impossible to start the services. The last message said that further information could be found at this address: /tmp/vmware-root-975001794/modconfig-22789.log So, I've pasted the content of the log message here. Can you help me or, rather, you suggest to wait for future updates of Ubuntu? My desktop environment is Unity.

• MySQL prevents server from booting unless password is entered

  I am kind of new with Ubuntu but I have been working on setting up a LAMP server with hamachi as a vpn client for management. The issue is that when we turn the server on or restart it we are required to enter the MySQL password before it will continue. Where can we script a password or disable this? I have attached a partial of less /var/log/boot.log * Starting MySQL ServerESC[204G[ OK ] ....... ok Password: If I haven't provided enough information please just comment and Ill try my best.

• ssh client times out to some servers, works on others

  I have a strange problem and I'm not sure where to begin. My ssh client works on some servers but times out on others. Obviously, I checked that the servers are accessible via ssh from other locations. From my machine A I can log on to C only by logging on to B first. There are at least two servers for which this is the case. To make matters more strange sudo ufw status - Status: inactive nmap -sT -p 22 <problem_server> - ...22/tcp open ssh... On one affected server I am getting: ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host and on the other I am getting ssh: connect to host <problem_server> port 22: Connection timed out With both of these servers I can log in from other machines. How can I troubleshoot such a problem?

• Analytics - Total events divided by number of unique pages?

  I am using Google Analytics events to track keywords on my articles - not necessarily the best system I know but there are too many for variables I can't easily change it right now - and I would like to be able to see how popular each keyword is by dividing the number of page views with a keyword by the number of unique pages. Is there a/what is the best way of doing this? EDIT FOR CLARITY I currently have a system set up where every time somebody loads an article an event is fired for each of the tags/keywords used, with the keyword being the label. I can currently view my view count for each of the keywords by looking at the total events for each label, however I would like to be able to see which keywords are the most popular by dividing the number of times the event has been fired by the the number of different pages it has been fired from.

• How do I install latest NVIDIA drivers from the .run file?

  This is what I am trying to do. I downloaded the latest driver for my VGA from http://www.nvidia.com. The installation needs the X11 to be shut down, so I log out of my account, then press CTRL+ALT+F1, then log in with my username and password, then run the command sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-285.05.09.run in every possible way, I have even tried CHMODing the package with 777 permissions, but still I'm getting the sh: can't open NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-285.05.09.run error. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• How to track inbound HTTP traffic using Plesk 10.4.4?

  I am running Plesk 10.4.4 on a Debian 6.0 server. The outbound traffic is being tracked but the inbound http traffic seems to be 0 at all times, i.e. looking at the DomainsTraffic and ClientsTraffic the http_in column is always 0. Is this a setting that I have missed? I've had a look and cannot find anything. How do I get Plesk to track the inbound HTTP traffic? I have already made sure that Home Tools & Settings Server settings had 'Include in the traffic calculation' set to 'inbound and outbound traffic', yet this does not solve the problem. Apache allows inbound traffic to be logged using %I in the log format, is there a way to get Plesk to add the %I to the log and then use that in bandwidth calculations?

• Spurious resets on Ubuntu

  I have a PC running Ubuntu 13.04 64bit, and I do weekly updates, so everything should be up-to-date. Everything is running fine, but sometimes, once-twice a week a complete reset happens. I think it must be software or hardware (perhaps Videocard) related, but I can't figure out what could be wrong. Can anybody suggest some ways, log files, where I could continue to search? By looking just at dmesg/dmesg.0 and Xorg.0.log I got nowhere. I cant find even a user application segfault. Any help is really appreciated.

• JSF: Cannot catch ViewExpiredException

  I'm developing a JSF 2.0 application on Glassfish v3 and i'm trying to handle the ViewExpiredException. But whatever i do, i always get a Glassfish error report instead of my own error page. To simulate the occurrence of the VEE, i inserted the following function into my backing bean, which fires the VEE. I'm triggering this function from my JSF page through a commandLink. The Code: @Named public class PersonHome { (...) public void throwVEE() { throw new ViewExpiredException(); } } At first i tried it by simply adding an error-page to my web.xml: <error-page> <exception-type>javax.faces.application.ViewExpiredException</exception-type> <location>/error.xhtml</location> </error-page> But this doesn't work, i'm not redirected to error but i'm shown the Glassfish errorpage, which shows a HTTP Status 500 page with the following content: description:The server encountered an internal error () that prevented it from fulfilling this request. exception: javax.servlet.ServletException: javax.faces.application.ViewExpiredException root cause: javax.faces.el.EvaluationException:javax.faces.application.ViewExpiredException root cause:javax.faces.application.ViewExpiredException Next thing i tried was to write ExceptionHandlerFactory and a CustomExceptionHandler, as described in JavaServerFaces 2.0 - The Complete Reference. • Ubuntu 9.10 and Squid 2.7 Transparent Proxy TCP_DENIED

  Hi, We've spent the last two days trying to get squid 2.7 to work with ubuntu 9.10. The computer running ubuntu has two network interfaces: eth0 and eth1 with dhcp running on eth1. Both interfaces have static ip's, eth0 is connected to the Internet and eth1 is connected to our LAN. We have followed literally dozens of different tutorials with no success.   Well BindingList and ObservableCollection work great to keep data updated and to notify when one of it's objects has changed. However, when notifying a property is about to change, I think these options are not very good.
