• Fetch multiple rows from SQL in PHP foreach item in array

  I try to request an array of IDs, to return each row with that ID, and push each into an Array $finalArray But only the first result from the Query will output, and at the second foreach, it skips the while loop. I have this working in another script, so I don't understand where it's going wrong. • Mysterious combination

  I decided to learn concurrency and wanted to find out in how many ways instructions from two different processes could overlap. The code for both processes is just a 10 iteration loop with 3 instructions performed in each iteration. I figured out the problem consisted of leaving X instructions fixed at a point and then fit the other X instructions from the other process between the spaces taking into account that they must be ordered (instruction 4 of process B must always come before instruction 20). I wrote a program to count this number, looking at the results I found out that the solution is n Combination k, where k is the number of instructions executed throughout the whole loop of one process, so for 10 iterations it would be 30, and n is k*2 (2 processes). In other words, n number of objects with n/2 fixed and having to fit n/2 among the spaces without the latter n/2 losing their order. Ok problem solved. No, not really. I have no idea why this is, I understand that the definition of a combination is, in how many ways can you take k elements from a group of n such that all the groups are different but the order in which you take the elements doesn't matter. In this case we have n elements and we are actually taking them all, because all the instructions are executed ( n C n). If one explains it by saying that there are 2k blue (A) and red (B) objects in a bag and you take k objects from the bag, you are still only taking k instructions when 2k instructions are actually executed.   Strange thing happens. Background-image is not displaying in Firefox under some versions of WindowsXP and Windows Vista, but displays in Firefox under Mac OSX. It also displays in IE. • More efficient way to update multiple elements in javascript and/or jquery?

  Say I have 6 divs with ID "#first", ""#second" ... "#sixth". Say if I wanted to execute functions on each of those divs, I would set up an array that contains each of the names of the divs I want to update as an element in the array of strings. ["first", "second", "third"] that I want to update. If I wanted to apply I function, I set up a for loop that iterates through each element in the array and say if I wanted to change the background color to red: function updateAllDivsInTheList() { for(var i = 0; i < array.size; i++) $("#"+array[i]).changeCssFunction(); } } Whenever I create a new div, i would add it to the array. The issue is, if I have a large number of divs that need to get updated, say if I wanted to update 1000 out of 1200 divs, it may be a pain/performance tank to have to sequentially iterate through every single element in the array. Is there some alternative more efficient way of updating multiple divs without having to sequentially iterate through every element in an array, maybe with some other more efficient data structure besides array? Or is what I am doing the most efficient way to do it? If can provide some example, that would be great.

• OSX: Programmatically added subviews not responding to mouse down events

  I have 3 subclasses: a Block class, a Row class and a Table class. All are subclasses of NSView. I have a Table added with IB which programmatically displays 8 rows, each of which displays 8 blocks. I overrode the mouseDown: method in Block to change the background color to red, but it doesn't work. Still if I add a block directly on top of the Table with IB it does work so I can't understand why it won't work in the first case. • Best strategies for reading J code

  I've been using J for a few months now, and I find that reading unfamiliar code (e.g. that I didn't write myself) is one of the most challenging aspects of the language, particularly when it's in tacit. After a while, I came up with this strategy: 1) Copy the code segment into a word document 2) Take each operator from (1) and place it on a separate line, so that it reads vertically 3) Replace each operator with its verbal description in the Vocabulary page 4) Do a rough translation from J syntax into English grammar 5) Use the translation to identify conceptually related components and separate them with line breaks 6) Write a description of what each component from (5) is supposed to do, in plain English prose 7) Write a description of what the whole program is supposed to do, based on (6) 8) Write an explanation of why the code from (1) can be said to represent the design concept from (7). Although I learn a lot from this process, I find it to be rather arduous and time-consuming -- especially if someone designed their program using a concept I never encountered before. So I wonder: do other people in the J community have favorite ways to figure out obscure code? If so, what are the advantages and disadvantages of these methods?

• Editing XML file content with Python.

  Hi, I am trying to use Python to read in an XML file containing some parameter names and values, e.g. ... <parameter name='par1'> <value>24</value> </parameter> <parameter name='par2'> <value>Blue/Red/Green</value> </parameter> ... and then pass it a dictionary with the parameter names {'par1':'53','par2':'Yellow/Pink/Black',...} and corresponding new values to replace the old ones in the XML file. The output should then overwrite the original XML file. At the moment I am converting the XML to a python dictionary and after some element comparison and regular expression handling, writing the output again in XML format. I am not too happy with this and was wondering whether anyone can recommend a more efficient way of doing it? Thanks.

• Using Color.rgb() doesnt work for full 0...255 range

  I'm writing an android game using opengl. I'm using: colour = Color.rgb(theR,theG,theB); (all ints) to store the color of a rectangle. Then I parse out the RGB to render the rectangle: colorR = Color.red(color); colorG = Color.green(color); colorB = Color.blue(color); For example for color 53,130,255 this should result in a blue but on my app it results in a white. If i use 1,1,1 i get white. If i use 0,0,0 i get black. If i use 0,1,0 I get green etc. So it looks like any value over one is treated as 1 and so i am not getting the full 0...255 range. I tried using Color.argb and color = Color.parseColor(theColor) where the Color is a string. I'm using this in an opengles app. I have a class to display a rectangle of color. This definitely works fine as the correct size rectangle is rendered, just not a color using values above 1. I also use textures and everything displays fine. any ideas? thanks a million

• Hard Drive POV clock

  I am building a hard drive POV clock. (google it, they are pretty cool) I am working on the code for it, right now all i want to do is get the hang of making it do simple patterns with the RGB leds. Eventually I will make the pattern more interesting by adding in other colors. Any Ideas?

• multiple touches: touchend event fired only when a touchmove occurs

  I would like to add some multitouch features to my javascript application when it is accessed from an ios device (and maybe android later). I want to provide a shiftkey-like functionality: the user may hold a button on the screen with one finger, and while this button is pressed, the behavior for a tap action on the rest of the screen is slightly different from the classic tap. The problem i'm running into is that i do not receive any touchend event for the tapping finger unless a touchmove is fired for the first finger holding the shiftkey button. Because the screen is very sensitive, touchmove events gets easily fired and in most cases everything works fine. But when the user's finger is a bit too still, the tapping is not detected until the user moves his finger a bit. This induces a variable 'delay' between the tapping and the action that occurs on the screen (the delay may vary and last a few seconds if the user is very calm). My guess is that this delay will cause the user to tap again and thus fire the action a second time, which is something that i don't want ! You can test it here with your ipad/iphone : http://jsfiddle.net/jdeXH/8/ Try to make the body remain green for a few seconds by holding your finger very still on the cyan div while tapping on the red div. Is this behavior to be expected ? Is there some known workaround for the problem ?   I was wondering if it's a good idea to teach object oriented programming to my son? I was never really good at math as a kid, but I think since I've started programming it's given me a greater ability to understand math by being better able to visualise relationships between abstract models. I thought it might give him a better advantage in learning & applying logical & mathematical concepts throughout his life if he was able to take advantage of the tools available to programmers. what would be the best programming fields, techniques and/or concepts? What approach should I take? what concepts should I avoid? what fields of mathematics would he find this benfits him most? He's only 2 now so it wouldn't be for another few years before I do this, (and even at that, only from a very high level point of view). • How can I center a CSS background image as if the image had a different width (without cutting the bgimg off)?

  I'm attempting to add a bookmarklet to my wop website. The issue is that I would like to have the bookmarklet (highlighted in red in the picture below) centered as if it did not have the arrow sticking out the side. If I change the width of the bgimage in the css, to be the same as the below indented box thingies, it centers how I would like it to. But, it cuts off a bit of the arrow. • Migrate from MySQL to PostgreSQL on Linux (Kubuntu)

  Storyline Trying to migrate a database from MySQL to PostgreSQL. All the documentation I have read covers, in great detail, how to migrate the structure. I have found very little documentation on migrating the data. The schema has 13 tables (which have been migrated successfully) and 9 GB of data. MySQL version: 5.1.x PostgreSQL version: 8.4.x I want to use the R programming language to analyze the data using SQL select statements; PostgreSQL has PL/R, but MySQL has nothing (as far as I can tell). A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... Create the database location (/var has insufficient space; also dislike having the PostgreSQL version number everywhere -- upgrading would break scripts!): sudo mkdir -p /home/postgres/main sudo cp -Rp /var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main /home/postgres sudo chown -R postgres.postgres /home/postgres sudo chmod -R 700 /home/postgres sudo usermod -d /home/postgres/ postgres All good to here. Next, restart the server and configure the database using these installation instructions: sudo apt-get install postgresql pgadmin3 sudo /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 stop sudo vi /etc/postgresql/8.4/main/postgresql.conf Change data_directory to /home/postgres/main sudo /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 start sudo -u postgres psql postgres \password postgres sudo -u postgres createdb climate pgadmin3 Use pgadmin3 to configure the database and create a schema. How do I ensure that adding new rows in PostgreSQL will start enumerating from the index of the last row inserted (and not conflict with an existing primary key from the sequence)? • Install MegaCli to Monitor Perc 5/i in Nexentastor 3

  I have a Dell 2950 with a Perc 5/i Raid controller that we've already installed Nexentastor 3 Community Edition on. We setup a raid-10 array that and put a ZFS pool on top of the hardware. As I understand, in this configuration ZFS/Nexentastor will not be able to tell when a disk fails in the array. Obviously, this is not optimal. Since the Dell Perc 5/i controller is a rebranded LSI controller, you should be able to use the MegaCli utility to manage the array and monitor its condition. I had seen in a separate forum that the Perc 5/i is very similar to the LSI MegaRAID 8480E, so I tried installing the MegaCli utility at the link below. However I didn't know how Sysprep worked before attempting this so it was a time-consuming nightmare (even after reviewing VMware vSphere ESXi 5's documentation)! I think I've figure out what I'm supposed to be doing, but it's still not working. The biggest problem at this point is that vSphere Client vCenter Customization Specification IP address information is not sticking when I load a Sysprep XML file with just 1 basic setting! This can only be a bug. Here is the process I'm using: PROCESS for Windows - vSphere Client Install Windows OS install VM Tools customize Windows (GPOs can be used to do this after deployment) install Applications (GPOs can be used to do this after deployment too) shutdown the VM convert the VM to a template create a custom Windows Sysprep XML answer file with desired customizations View Management Customization Specifications Manager create "New" Specification for "Target Virtual Machine OS" select Windows check "Use Custom Sysprep Answer File" (ADDS: Custom Sysprep File. KEEPS: Network (IP), Operating System Options (SID, Sysprep /generalize). REPLACES: Registration Information of Owner Name & Organization, Computer Name, Windows License (Key), Administrator Password, Time Zone, Run Once, Workgroup or Domain) name it as "VMwareCS-OS####R#x32/64w/Sysprep-TEST" (CS=Customization Specification) set Description as "Created YYYY/MM/DD by FLast" NEXT import a Sysprep answer file from secure location NEXT Custom settings NEXT click "..." box to right of "Use DHCP" set "Use the following IP settings:" for "IP Address" fill out the first 2 octets set appropriate values for other 2-3 fields set DNS server addresses OK NEXT check "Generate New Security ID (SID)" ALWAYS as template is likely a domain-member computer so it can be updated occasionally NEXT Finish View Inventory VMs and Templates right-click previously completed template Deploy Virtual Machine from this Template provide the new OS name (max15char) select inventory location NEXT select Host/Cluster (wait for validation to succeed) NEXT select Resource Pool (wait for validation to succeed) NEXT select Storage location NEXT check "Power on this virtual machine after creation" select "Customize using an existing customization specification" select desired specification select "Use the Customization Wizard to temporarily adjust the specification before deployment" NEXT NEXT Custom settings? • XenServer 6.0.2 path to installation media contains non-ascii characters

  XenServer 6.0.2 install fails no matter what I do. I have confirmed that the md5 checksum on my ISO file is good. I tried installing from a mounted ISO file (remotely via iKVM). I tried installing from physical media. I tried installing from a bootable USB stick (using syslinux + contents of the ISO) All attempts have yielded the same result: When verifying the installation media, at 0% initializing, the following is reported: "Some packages appeared to be damaged." followed by a list of pretty much all the gz2 and rpm packages. If I skip the media verification the installer proceeds and then gives me an error when it reaches "Installing from base pack" at 0% which states "An unrecoverable error has occurred. The error was: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xff in position 20710: ordinal not in range(128) Please refer to your user guide, or contact a Technical Support Representative, for further details" there is one option left which is to reboot. Apparently at some point during the processing of the repositories on the installation media non-ascii characters are found, which causes the installer to quit. How do I fix this? Here are my specs TYAN S8236 motherboard 2 AMD Opteron 6234 processors LSI2008 card connected to 2 1TB Seagate Constellation drives SATA, 1 500GB Corsair m4 SSD SATA and 1 Corsair Forse 3 - 64GB SSD SATA Onboard SATA connected to a slim DVD-+RW.   I have been battling for a week now to get my Mac (Mountain Lion) to authenticate on my home network's OpenLDAP and Samba. From several sources, like the Ubuntu community docs, and other blogs, and after a hell of a lot of trial and error and piecing things together, I have created a samba.ldif that will pass the smbldap-populate when combined with apple.ldif and I have a fully functional OpenLDAP server and a Samba PDC that uses LDAP to authenticate the OS X Machine. The problem is that when I login, the home directory is not created or pulled from the server. • Coldfusion autorestart

  Coldfusion is automatically restarting, a lot. It comes in waves, everything seems fine for a while then the server struggles for a few minutes, restarts a lot then settles down again. I have Fusion Reactor installed, but when CF goes down FR stops logging so it's not really helping. Looking through the archived logs just shows gaps in the logs. These are all the occourances of the phrase "Coldfusion started" today. Looking at the logs for the hour between 9am and 10am (more than 15 restarts in the hour), the CPU never went over 44% usage and the Memory never exceeded 53% usage - in the recorded stats at least. There is no JDBC tracking at the moment, so I'll add that to tracking and see if it's MySQL causing a problem, but can anyone help me narrow down the problem, what would cause Cold Fusion to auto restart, and I'm assuming the auto restart is only happening because Fusion Reactor is installed. It's a Red Hat 5 LAMP stack running Coldfusion 9 and Fusion Reactor 4.5.2
