  • Feedback on meeting of the Linux User Group of Mauritius

Once upon a time in a country far far away... Okay, actually it's not that bad but it has been a while since the last meeting of the Linux User Group of Mauritius (LUGM). There have been plans in the past but it never really happened. Finally, Selven took the opportunity and organised a new meetup with low administrative overhead, proper scheduling on alternative dates and a small attendee's survey on the preferred option. All the pre-work was nicely executed. First, I wasn't sure whether it would be possible to attend. Luckily I got some additional information, like children should come, too, and I was sold to this community gathering. According to other long-term members of the LUGM it was the first time 'ever' that a gathering was organised outside of Quatre Bornes, and I have to admit it was great! LUGM - user group meeting on the 15.06.2013 in L'Escalier Quick overview of Linux & the LUGM With a little bit of delay the LUGM meeting officially started with a quick overview and introduction to Linux presented by Avinash. During the session he told the audience that there had been quite some activity over the island some years ago but unfortunately it had been quiet during recent times. Of course, we also spoke about the acknowledged world dominance of Linux - thanks to Android - and the interesting possibilities for countries like Mauritius. It is known that a couple of public institutions have there back-end infrastructure running on Red Hat Linux systems but the presence on the desktop is still very low. Users are simply hanging on to Windows XP and older versions of Microsoft Office. Following the introduction of the LUGM Ajay joined into the session and it quickly changed into a panel discussion with lots of interesting questions and answers, sharing of first-hand experience either on the job or in private use of Linux, and a couple of ideas about how the LUGM could promote Linux a bit more in Mauritius. It was great to get an insight into other attendee's opinion and activities. Especially taking into consideration that I'm already using Linux since around 1996/97. Frankly speaking, I bought a SuSE 4.x distribution back in those days because I couldn't achieve certain tasks on Windows NT 4.0 without spending a fortune. OpenELEC Mediacenter Next, Selven gave us decent introduction on OpenELEC: Open Embedded Linux Entertainment Center (OpenELEC) is a small Linux distribution built from scratch as a platform to turn your computer into an XBMC media center. OpenELEC is designed to make your system boot fast, and the install is so easy that anyone can turn a blank PC into a media machine in less than 15 minutes. I didn't know about it until this presentation. In the past, I was mainly attached to Video Disk Recorder (VDR) as it allows the use of satellite receiver cards very easily. Hm, somehow I'm still missing my precious HTPC that I had to leave back in Germany years ago. It was great piece of hardware and software; self-built PC in a standard HiFi-sized (43cm) black desktop casing with 2 full-featured Hauppauge DVB-s cards, an old-fashioned Voodoo graphics card, WiFi card, Pioneer slot-in DVD drive, and fully remote controlled via infra-red thanks to Debian, VDR and LIRC. With EP Guide, scheduled recordings and general multimedia centre it offered all the necessary comfort in the living room, besides a Nintendo game console; actually a GameCube at that time... But I have to admit that putting OpenELEC on a Raspberry Pi would be a cool DIY project in the near future. LUGM - our next generation of linux users (15.06.2013) Project Evil Genius (PEG) Don't be scared of the paragraph header. Ish gave us a cool explanation why he named it PEG - Project Evil Genius; it's because of the time of the day when he was scripting down his ideas to be able to build, package and provide software applications to various Linux distributions. The main influence came from openSuSE but the platform didn't cater for his needs and ideas, so he started to work out something on his own. During his passionate session he also talked about the amazing experience he had due to other Linux users from all over the world. During the next couple of days Ish promised to put his script to GitHub... Looking forward to that. Check out Ish's personal blog over at hacklog.in. Highly recommended to read. Why India? Simply because the registration fees per year for an Indian domain are approximately 20 times less than for a Mauritian domain (.mu). Exploring the beach of L'Escalier af the meeting 'After-party' at the beach of L'Escalier Puh, after such interesting sessions, ideas around Linux and good conversation during the breaks and over lunch it was time for a little break-out. Selven suggested that we all should head down to the beach of L'Escalier and get some impressions of nature down here in the south of the island. Talking about 'beach' ;-) - absolutely not comparable to the white-sanded ones here in Flic en Flac... There are no lagoons down at the south coast of Mauriitus, and watching the breaking waves is a different experience and joy after all. Unfortunately, I was a little bit worried about the thoughtless littering at such a remote location. You have to drive on natural paths through the sugar cane fields and I was really shocked by the amount of rubbish lying around almost everywhere. Sad, really sad and it concurs with Yasir's recent article on the same topic. Resumé & outlook It was a great event. I met with new people, had some good conversations, and even my children enjoyed themselves the whole day. The location was well-chosen, enough space for each and everyone, parking spaces and even a playground for the children. Also, a big "Thank You" to Selven and his helpers for the organisation and preparation of lunch. I'm kind of sure that this was an exceptional meeting of LUGM and I'm really looking forward to the next gathering of Linux geeks. Hopefully, soon. All images are courtesy of Avinash Meetoo. • Can't create a fullscreen WPF popup

    - by Scrappydog
Using WPF .NET 4.0 in VS2010 RTM: I can't create a fullscreen WPF popup. If I create a popup that is sized 50% width and 100% height everything works fine, but if I try to create a "full screen" popup sized to 100% width and height it ends up displaying at 100% width and 75% height... the bottom is truncated. Note: The width and height are actually being expressed in pixels in code, I'm using percent to make the situation a little more understandable... It "feels" like there is some sort of limit preventing the area of a popup from exceeding ~75% of the total area of the screen. UPDATE: Here is a Hello World example that shows the problem. <Window x:Class="TechnologyVisualizer.PopupTest" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Title="PopupTest" WindowStyle="None" WindowState="Maximized" Background="DarkGray"> <Canvas x:Name="MainCanvas" Width="1920" Height="1080"> <Popup Placement="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center" HorizontalAlignment="Center" Width="1900" Height="1060" Name="popContent"> <TextBlock Background="Red">Hello World</TextBlock> </Popup> <Button Canvas.Left="50" Canvas.Top="50" Content="Menu" Height="60" Name="button1" Width="80" FontSize="22" Foreground="White" Background="Black" Click="button1_Click" /> </Canvas> </Window> using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Windows; using System.Windows.Controls; using System.Windows.Data; using System.Windows.Documents; using System.Windows.Input; using System.Windows.Media; using System.Windows.Media.Imaging; using System.Windows.Shapes; namespace TechnologyVisualizer { /// <summary> /// Interaction logic for PopupTest.xaml /// </summary> public partial class PopupTest : Window { public PopupTest() { InitializeComponent(); } private void button1_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { popContent.IsOpen = true; } } } If you run this the bottom 25% of the popup is missing if you change the width of the popup to 500 then it will go full height

  • Capture each WPF MediaElement frame

    - by luvieere
Is there a way to capture each WPF MediaElement frame? Like an event that fires at each rendered frame and allows me to access it. If MediaElement does not provide such functionality, how could it be implemented or what other control could I use? On a side note, is there such a control or method that would allow for off-screen fast rendering of media clips with frame capture? (so I could process frames as fast as possible)

  • Blackberry Menu from native blackberry application

    - by chrishawn
I have an application that inserts an ApplicationMenuItem into the native blackberry contacts menu. I can get this to work just fine. Now my question is how would I change or remove that ApplicationMenuItem based on the contact that i am highlighted on? Would I need to use a GlobalEventListener? I assume overriding makeMenu can only be done for menus on my own screens and not the native contacts screen?

  • Android ViewFlipper + Gesture Detector

    - by Tim
I am using gesture detector to catch "flings" and using a view flipper to change the screen when this happens. Some of my child views contain list views. The the gesture detector wont recognize a swipe if you swipe on the list view. But it will recognize it if it is onTop of TextView's or ImageView's. Is there a way to implement it so that it will recognize the swipes even if they are on top of another view that has a ClickListener?

  • Speed up UIPageViewController

    - by Jack Humphries
I have a UIPageViewController with several pages. Each page is the same view controller, but the page number is kept track of and the correct page of a PDF is shown. The problem is that each PDF page needs to be loaded and drawn before the curl effect works (you slide your finger across the screen and nothing happens until loaded). Any ideas on how to speed this up or preload the next page? Thanks for your help.

  • Why does my layout repeats in device but looks fine on emulator when an image is added in a Relative Layout?

    - by Honey H
let me try to explain clearly with what I want here. I have a RelativeLayout that contains a header image and the content below it. Now, when i have a header image and a list view below it, the page fits the screen in the device properly, the layout does not repeat. But when I place an image below the header image, the layout repeats in the device. Meaning i could see 2 header images in the device. Some page, I could see half of the header image that is not supposed to be there (repeated header image). However, in emulator, all the pages looks fine and fit the screen nicely. I tried changing to LinearLayout, RelativeLayout inside LinearLayout, Relative Layout, it gave me the same outcome. I hope someone could tell me why this happened. Thanks. Attached is my layout. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:orientation="vertical" android:background="@drawable/bg" > <ImageView android:id="@+id/header" android:contentDescription="@string/image" android:src= "@drawable/header" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:adjustViewBounds="true" android:scaleType="centerCrop"/> <RelativeLayout android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_centerInParent="true" android:orientation="vertical" > <ImageView android:id="@+id/journal" android:layout_width="150dp" android:layout_height="150dp" android:layout_alignTop="@+id/kick" android:adjustViewBounds="true" android:contentDescription="@string/image" android:padding="10dp" android:src="@drawable/favourite_journal" /> <ImageView android:id="@+id/kick" android:layout_width="150dp" android:layout_height="150dp" android:layout_toRightOf="@+id/journal" android:layout_below="@+id/header" android:adjustViewBounds="true" android:contentDescription="@string/image" android:padding="10dp" android:src="@drawable/favourite_kick" /> <ImageView android:id="@+id/labour" android:layout_width="150dp" android:layout_height="150dp" android:layout_below="@+id/journal" android:layout_alignLeft="@+id/journal" android:adjustViewBounds="true" android:contentDescription="@string/image" android:padding="10dp" android:src="@drawable/favourite_labour" /> <ImageView android:id="@+id/share" android:layout_width="150dp" android:layout_height="150dp" android:layout_below="@+id/kick" android:layout_alignLeft="@+id/kick" android:adjustViewBounds="true" android:contentDescription="@string/image" android:padding="10dp" android:src="@drawable/favourite_share" /> </RelativeLayout> </RelativeLayout>

  • C# - Kinetic scrolling with ListBox or ListView?

    - by fonix232
I am doing a simple application for touch screen devices, and I would like to implement today's fashion: kinetic scrolling. Is it possible to do, and if yes, how? PS: Kinetic scrolling: A scrolling mechanism where you don't use a scrollbar to scroll the content, but you touch the list itself, and pull and push it. The "physics engine" then counts out the speed, and stops based on the given settings.

  • WPF XAML: how to get StackPanel's children to fill maximum space downward?

    - by Edward Tanguay
    I simply want flowing text on the left, and a help box on the right. The help box should extend all the way to the bottom. If you take out the outer StackPanel below it works great. But for reasons of layout (I'm inserting UserControls dynamically) I need to have the wrapping StackPanel. How do I get the GroupBox to extend down to the bottom of the StackPanel, as you can see I've tried: VerticalAlignment="Stretch" VerticalContentAlignment="Stretch" Height="Auto" XAML: <Window x:Class="TestDynamic033.Test3" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Title="Test3" Height="300" Width="600"> <StackPanel VerticalAlignment="Stretch" Height="Auto"> <DockPanel HorizontalAlignment="Stretch" VerticalAlignment="Stretch" Height="Auto" Margin="10"> <GroupBox DockPanel.Dock="Right" Header="Help" Width="100" Background="Beige" VerticalAlignment="Stretch" VerticalContentAlignment="Stretch" Height="Auto"> <TextBlock Text="This is the help that is available on the news screen." TextWrapping="Wrap" /> </GroupBox> <StackPanel DockPanel.Dock="Left" Margin="10" Width="Auto" HorizontalAlignment="Stretch"> <TextBlock Text="Here is the news that should wrap around." TextWrapping="Wrap"/> </StackPanel> </DockPanel> </StackPanel> </Window> Answer: Thanks Mark, using DockPanel instead of StackPanel cleared it up. In general, I find myself using DockPanel more and more now for WPF layouting, here's the fixed XAML: <Window x:Class="TestDynamic033.Test3" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Title="Test3" Height="300" Width="600" MinWidth="500" MinHeight="200"> <DockPanel VerticalAlignment="Stretch" Height="Auto"> <DockPanel HorizontalAlignment="Stretch" VerticalAlignment="Stretch" Height="Auto" MinWidth="400" Margin="10"> <GroupBox DockPanel.Dock="Right" Header="Help" Width="100" VerticalAlignment="Stretch" VerticalContentAlignment="Stretch" Height="Auto"> <Border CornerRadius="3" Background="Beige"> <TextBlock Text="This is the help that is available on the news screen." TextWrapping="Wrap" Padding="5"/> </Border> </GroupBox> <StackPanel DockPanel.Dock="Left" Margin="10" Width="Auto" HorizontalAlignment="Stretch"> <TextBlock Text="Here is the news that should wrap around." TextWrapping="Wrap"/> </StackPanel> </DockPanel> </DockPanel> </Window>

  • Stock ticker symbol lookup API

    - by dancavallaro
Is there any sort of API that just offers a simple symbol lookup service? i.e., input a company name and it will tell you the ticker symbol? I've tried just screen-scraping Google Finance, but after a little while it rate limits you and you have to enter a CAPTCHA. I'm trying to batch-lookup about 2000 ticker symbols. Any ideas?

  • What causes this error? "CALayer position contains NaN: [240 nan]"

    - by Kevlar
I've seen this happen whenever i rotate a screen that has a UITableView on it. I've found out that it happens inbetween the willRotate and didRotate method calls in UIViewController My co-workers have seen it in other spots as well, usually around rotation. It hadnt started happening until very recently, and we're stumped as to how we should deal with it (google searches don't turn up the error message in its exact form). Has anyone else encountered this that knows what to do about it?
