  • HDMI Disconnects after TV has been off for a while

    I have an EVGA NVidia GT 610 card in a media center PC running Windows 8 x64 When the TV has been turned off for a while and then turned back on, there will usually be no HDMI signal until I unplug the HDMI cable and plug it back in. Any ideas how what might be causing this or what I should check? I have the latest drivers from NVidia and the card recognizes the TV just fine. Also, my XBox 360 and PS3 work just fine and always show up.

  • cygwin running commands with switches when ssh in

    When I SSH into a Windows 2008 R2 box and try to run a command with switches like /cygdrive/c/directory/Reports.exe /ReportID=1 /DateRange=LastWeek the command just hangs and never finishes. I can see the Reports.exe spawn a process under the user but never finishes. If I RDP into the box open cygwin terminal and run the exact command it works. Any reason why I can't run the command when I SSH in?

  • Fixed or consistent mount location for a USB hard drive

    I store my music on an external hard drive, and play them with foobar2k. However, the drive letter changes, which usually means I need to rebuild a fairly large playlist every so often. I'm wondering if there's a way to reserve a drive letter for a specific external device (or type of device) by device ID or volume name, or if I'm better off using a NTFS mount point, and re-mounting the drive to a folder each time. I'm using either a Windows XP or 7 system, and the external drive is NTFS.

    Some web pages won't download fully under any browser on any computer connected to the network. I have Internet access through a wireless modem/router (2 Mbps DSL connection, wireless reception is excellent). I use Opera and when I turn on Opera turbo the same sites download fully. I tried changing to some other dns (opendns, google dns), but it made no difference. What would you suggest I try? OS : Windows 7 64 bit

    Hello, I'm trying to create a Windows Virtual Drive ( like c:\ ) to map a remote storage. The main purpose is to do it in a clear way to the user. Therefore the user wouldn't know that he is writing/reading from another site. I was searching for available products, and i find that FUSE is not an option in Windows and WebDAV maps directly the drive, and i would like to build a middle layer between windows and remote storage to implement some kind of services. Another alternatives exists, such as Dokan, that is very expensive, and System.IO.IsolatedStorage Namespace, that doesn't seem to explicity create a new Windows Drive. Probably pismo ( http://www.pismotechnic.com/ ) is the thing that mostly matches my requirements but I would know if there is another alternative, including some Windows ( C++ or .NET ) native API to do that.   • Should I share UI for objects that use common fields?

    I have a parent class that holds all of the fields that are common between all device types. From that, I have a few derived classes that each hold their unique fields. Say I have device type "Switch" and "Transformer". Both derived classes only have 2-3 of their own unique fields. When doing the UI design (windows forms) in this case. Should I create two separate forms for each device type or create a user control with all fields that are shared among all devices? Thank you.

    Hi, I wrote a program that will copy a file called a.exe to C:/Windows/, then I pack it to exe with PyInstaller, and rename the exe file to a.exe. When I run the exe file, it output IOError [Errno 13] Permisson denied: 'C:/Windows/a.exe', but the file a.exe was copied to the directory C:/Windows. Then I ran it as the Administrator, it happened again... At first, I copy the file with shututil.copy, then I wrote a function myself(open a.exe, create a.exe under C:/Windows, read a.exe 's content and write to C:/Windows/a.exe, close all), but it doesn't help...Any ideas?

    I am trying to recreate a problem I encountered to try to confirm the root causes of it. One of the possible theory is that the problem is being caused because the server hadn't restarted for along time. Since I've already restarted the computer, Is there a way of resetting/modifying the "Last Reboot time" so the computer thinks it hasn't restarted for along time?   • Why is 'System' process at 100%?

    On Windows 7, the 'system' process is taking up 100% CPU (well 50% on a duel core) for a rather long time. Its CPU usage doesn't seem to drop at all. How can I diagnose this problem? What could be the cause? I don't see any other problems with the system and am using an up-to-date AVG, so I don't yet suspect a maelware.

    You’re no doubt reading this article because there’s a gigantic hiberfil.sys file sitting in the root of your drive, and you want to get rid of it to free up some space… but you can’t! Luckily, you actually can delete it, and today we’ll show you how. The more memory you have in your PC, the bigger the file will be. So What is hiberfil.sys Anyway? Windows has two power management modes that you can choose from: one is Sleep Mode, which keeps the PC running in a low power state so you can almost instantly get back to what you were working on. The other is Hibernate mode, which completely writes the memory out to the hard drive, and then powers the PC down entirely, so you can even take the battery out, put it back in, start back up, and be right back where you were. Hibernate mode uses the hiberfil.sys file to store the the current state (memory) of the PC, and since it’s managed by Windows, you can’t delete the file. So if you never use it, and want to disable Hibernate mode, keep reading. Personally I stick with Sleep Mode the vast majority of the time, but I do use Hibernate quite often. Disable Hibernate (and Delete hiberfil.sys) in Windows 7 or Vista You’ll need to open an administrator mode command prompt by right-clicking on the command prompt in the start menu, and then choosing Run as Administrator. Once you’re there, type in the following command: powercfg -h off You should immediately notice that the Hibernate option is gone from the Shut down menu. You’ll also notice that the file is magically gone! For more about dealing with Hibernate like setting how long it takes to head into Hibernate mode, you can check out our article on How to Manage Hibernate Mode in Windows 7. Disabling Hibernate Mode in Windows XP It’s a lot easier in Windows XP to get rid of Hibernate mode… in fact, we’ve already covered it before, but we’ll cover it again.   • dual boot ubuntu installation mishap

    I have Windows 7 pc ,where i had 2 partitions, a c drive for my system files and a d drive for my data. I decided to install ubuntu 11.10 a couple of days ago and thought of install it in a separate partition of its own. So i made a separate Linux partition of 30GB. I downloaded ubuntu on my usb stick and installed. During the installation process i was asked where to install ubuntu so i opened up a screen that was similar to this one There were six partitions present ( I had made only 3 partition via windows). Their names were totally different from the ones that i had given in windows. So i selected a drive which had the same size as my Linux partition that i had made in windows ( no other partition had the same size). I clicked on install now and got an error message saying that "There was no root folder set". I set the newly made partition as my root folder and clicked install now. Now out of the 6 partitions that were created 3 were logical ( i had only created 3 partitions in windows). As soon as i clicked install now, the system asked me where i wanted to put my "swap space". I selected one of the logical drives and hit install. Ubuntu successfully installed on my system and at the end it asked me to reboot. I did and got the following error message: "missing operating system". I was shocked. I tried my windows recovery disk ( that i had gotten when i had purchased my laptop) and there i went into startup repair. In the startup repair option i was not able to locate windows. The system asked me to click the "Load drivers" button to load the drivers to my harddrive where windows was installed, but i could not locate any drivers to my harddrive. I tried this several times but to no success. I panicked and installed ubuntu, now this time click "ok" at every step( not worrying about the partition and all). The os installed correctly and i am now able to access my harddrive. NO data within the c drive is lost. All the windows system files are intact. I wish to recover my windows installation. How do i go about it? Thank you in advance. I do not want to format my computer and install windows again.

  • 2-Bay External HDD Enclosure in JBOD mode fails to detect both drives (Linux & Windows)

    I recently purchased a couple of USB 3.0 External HDD Enclosures to use for storage and backup; the idea was to have one act as backup to the other, with 4 x 3TB drives in total. However, the second drive in each is not accessible in either Linux nor Windows, and I could not determine the reason. 1. Situation The two enclosures are slightly different (couldn't find them in stock at the same time) yet from many little details appear to be the same Chinese base design with a tweaked outer shell. The models are: Sharkoon 2-Bay RAID Box Fantec MR-35DU3 The drives are Seagate 3TB Barracuda ST33000651AS, firmware CC44, all identical. From reading manuals and online sources, I determined that JBOD would be the optimal setup for my needs -- addressing the two drives separately in each enclosure would be important, making it easy to swap drives and mix&match them if needed; all the other modes implied the controller doing a combination of the drives. The software used was Debian GNU/Linux - testing/wheezy - kernel 2.6.39-2 and Windows 7 Ultimate. 2. Description of the problem Now, here comes the problem: every time I connect either of the enclosures to a PC using the supplied cable (tried a different one as well), only the HDD in the top bay is readable, the one below is detected yet errors out in various ways. According to the manuals, it should not happen: in JBOD, the system should be able to "see" two separate drives upon connection. This happens with both enclosures and any combination of HDDs (i.e. if I swap them, the same thing happens), so the HDDs are good and I think so are the enclosures (two different companies making similar products that failed in an identical fashion would be very unlikely). The top HDD can be used fine every time, I actually tried a speed test from Linux and got about 150MiB/s reads, so all is working as it should; the one below refuses to work every time. So the failure is consistent. To make sure this was not some obscure Linux bug, I tried the same under Windows 7, and the system also only created one drive letter for a drive of 3TB size (so it was only seeing one instead of both). Placing an older, known good, 2TB drive in the top bay made that the one recognised, so we have the same issue under Windows as well. Log entries under Linux (tested here with a 3TB and a 2TB drive so I could differentiate them; either one works in the top enclosure, in the test setup the 3TB one is on top).     I know that you can use SysPrep and ImageX to create a prepared image that can be used on several systems but the question is. How well does it work in a corporate environment of moving machines from old hardware off to new harddrives and new hardware? EDIT: The system runs accounting software and databases. So would SysPrep remove all License keys and other information which means would cause problems right? Would something else be a better option even though there are heavy costs involved? Currently, when I clone/copy the drive, Windows will black screen on me. So I need something with differential hardware support?

  • Embedded video is not shown in internet explorer 9 RC or Beta

    In IE 9 RC or in beta, the embedded video is not shown in the web page. I verified the security settings in "internet options". Did not find any issue. Please find the screen shot below. I am able to view the flash videos in Youtube. But, for some reason, in some sites the embedded video is not shown. I don't have this issue with firefox. UPDATE: I am able to see view the embedded video in Admin account. But not able to view it in Standard account.

    Hi there, I have a ESX3i, build 207095 and i'm having a problem connecting to my VM's using the vmware remote console. On my PC always gives me an error about vmare-remotemks. I can do all of the tasks using VI client, but when a try to open remote console it breaks, the only thing that apears on the black screen is "unknown MKS Event". I can't find a solution to my problem, and i really need to be able to start a remote console from my PC. On my laptop the error doesn't occurs, both machines are Windows 7 x64. Thanks, JGanhão

  • How do I enable in-place tablet pc input panel for non tablet PCs?

    Hi all, Is it possible to enable the in-place tablet PC input panel on a non-tablet PC? I have checked the "For tablet pen input, show the Input Panel icon next to the text entry area when possible" checkbox in the options of the Input Panel. Does this not work because pen input is something different than mouse input? I do have a touch screen, but it just emulates a mouse (moving the cursor, pressing the left mouse button and such). I can get the Input Panel to show manually by starting tabtip.exe and then event the ink works, but I cannot get it to show (itself or it's in-place icon) when I activate text input controls. Does anyone know what's up?

  • Preparing Automatic Repair appears out of nowhere & takes forever?

    I shutdown my work machine (Windows 8.1 Pro) without any errors appearing (and without installing any new software and especially no new drivers the last couple days) yesterday evening, turned it on this morning and it automatically started into 'Preparing Automatic Repair' mode. 1st of - is there any way to get more information WHY this is appearing out of the blue and.. 2ndly, how long is this usually supposed to take? This is a rather beefy machine (Intel 3770k / 4 core 3.9ghz, Intel SSDs only and 32 gb of ram) but this screen has been 'loading' for almost 1.5 hours now. Is there any sort of debug/verbose mode that would give me ANY indication what's going on?
