• Referencing Excel Sheets with JET Driver Sheets Are Duplicated with Underscores

  I'm referencing an excel document with the JET database driver, which was working just fine until one day the application failed. Upon further investigation I noticed that the tabs were duplicated in some instances (all tabs actually) - i.e. Tab1$ and Tab1$_. I've researched this issue and found that it is caused by the user applying a filter. Now the filters have been removed, no special formatting, frozen panes, or print formats, but still I have these tabs duplicated. Normally I'd code around this, but since we're in a code freeze I need to come up with an Excel based solution. I want to get rid of those crazy underscored tab names / reverences. I could probably run a program to clean up the file if necessary, to send it back to the users, but I want to explore Excel options first. Thoughts? I have Excel 2010, and access to any other version as well.

• Preferred Method Of Application Purchase

  This is more of a "programmers" question, but felt that it was technical enough to belong on Stack Overflow instead. I'm launching an application soon that will follow the shareware model of purchase. I've thought about implementing this in a few ways: Limited access to the application until they purchase Full access to the application but expires after 30 day, requiring them to purchase to retain utility. Full access to the application indefinitely, but with a 10-15 second pop-up box on start-up asking them to register -- like mIRC does (or used to do). The method of authentication will be web-based. I'll provide them with an authentication key and they'll put it in the application. Whenever the application boots up, it'll check my web service and determine whether the application is genuine or not. This isn't my question. My question is: Is there a preferred method of implementation? I'd like to piss off the users as little as possible, but I'd also like to get paid for my work.

• How do you reach a "flow" state while programming?

  I'm not talking about program flow, but as in the state of working called flow, the state where you can get great work done the most effectively. I find that my current work environment while good in many ways does not allow me to get into a good state of mind for writing code most of the time (my job includes many other functions). If it's critical to get something done I'll often put on head-phones with classical music and try to drown out the office noise around me (and discourage co-workings from asking me questions). I am best able to get work done late in the evening when the house is quite and I've been thinking about the project for most of the day. What tricks have you found when working in less then perfect office environments?

• logrotate compress files after the postrotate script

  I have an application generating a really heavy big log file every days (~800MB a day), thus I need to compress them but since the compression takes time, I want that logrotate compress the file after reloading/sending HUP signal to the application. /var/log/myapp.log { rotate 7 size 500M compress weekly postrotate /bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/myapp.pid 2>/dev/null` 2>/dev/null || true endscript } Is it already the case that the compression takes place after the postrotate (which would be counter-intuitive)? • Any way to have delayed_job execute some run-once code at startup and use across all jobs?

  So I've got a delayed_job task that pushes some info to an XMPP server. Ideally you create a connection to XMPP once and then constantly push data to it, rather than creating a new connection every time you have some data to send. Is there any kind of facility in delayed_job for running a sort of 'setup' method when a worker starts, have it set some instance variables (like the XMPP connection object) that can then be used by all the jobs that come up? It's okay if each worker runs its own setup method. I just don't want every job (thousands per day) connecting to the XMPP server from scratch every time. Thanks for any help!

• Print from Chrome without the print dialogs? Using Greasemonkey userscript maybe?

  We're developing a browser-based warehouse app that needs to print labels and invoices regularly. We want to be able to print to the local printer without going the the usual browser print dialogs. Is this possible? Possibly using a greasemonkey userscript? We don't want to have to setup a whole CUPS printer network and deal with all that, but warehouse pickers having to click through a print dialog 1000 times a day isn't an option. We're printing PDFs, not sure if that matters. If we could do this another way using HTML5 or something else I'm open to course changes or other ideas here.

• Crystal Report Function for converting Seconds to Timespan format.

  I have a crystal report where it shows the Agent's activities throughout the day with a pie chart. In the details section it is displaying: Activity [string] StartedAt [DateTime] EndedAt [DateTime] Duration [The difference between EndedAt and StartedAt in seconds - Integer] Report data is GroupedBy Activity and summarized by Duration. Currently Duration is shown in seconds but I need to format it 02h:30m:22s:15ms. For that I wrote a custom function in Crystal Report in the Formula Workshop editor as follows, but it looks like the syntax is not right (Error message on keyword Long: "A variable type (for example, 'String') is missing."). • jQuery timer, ajax, and "nice time"

My problem is that I need to format this UNIX timestamp into a format such as "1 day 3 hours 56 minutes and 3 seconds ago", while also doing all the incrementation and ajax calls. I'm not very experienced with jquery/javascript, so I might be missing something basic.

• Java M4A atom tagging free space issue

  Hey, I've been trying to be able to read and write iTunes style M4A atoms and while I've successfully done the reading part, I've come to a bit of a halt in regards to the free space atoms. I figured that I should be able edit and shift the padding around to accommodate writing an atom with more data than it originally had. I've been stuck on this for about a day now, and I've been trying to figure out how to determine the closest free space atom with enough size to accommodate the new data. so far I have: private freeAtom acquireFreeSpaceAtom( long position ) { long atomStart = Long.MAX_VALUE; freeAtom atom = null; for( freeAtom a : freeSpace ) { if( Math.abs( position - atomStart ) > Math.abs( position - a.getAtomStart() ) ) atomStart = ( atom = a ).getAtomStart(); } return atom; } That code only takes into account the closest free space atom and completely disregards the fact that it should be greater than or equal to a certain size, but I can't quite figure out how I should check for both closeness and size efficiently.

• JavaScript on Android randomly stops working

  Hi! I have an application that uses a WebView and a html-page with javascript functions. Randomly the JavaScript functions doesn't seem to be called. It works up to a random point (I have looked at this bug all day) can only be produced on hardware (HTC Legend) not on emulator. Basicly I'm using callback to javaScript whenever the user presses a button, these callbacks tell the html to redraw using javaScript functions. mHandler.post(new Runnable() { public void run() { mWebView.loadUrl("javascript:getDataLine()"); } }); The first line in this javaScript code is an alert that says that it has started, so that I can see that it's working. Settings alerts or console.log's everywhere won't help as it seems the problem is in the webview or in Android itself. I need a way to see what's going on in the background. Maybe see if a previous call failed and stalled the thread or something.

  A SQL statement can give a list of the most popular gifts that are sent in a Social application, all the way to the ones that are sent 1, or 2 times, but it won't include the Zeros. I think the same goes for getting the list of the most popular Classes that students are registering for, when the registration process for all students is 10 days and now it is the 3rd day. Again, we get the count but the Zeros are not there. Is there a simple SQL statement that can show the whole list, including the zeros?

  Hi All, I need to find the most efficient way of matching multiple regular expressions on a single block of text. To give an example of what I need, consider a block of text: "Hello World what a beautiful day" I want to replace Hello with "Bye" and "World" with Universe. I can always do this in a loop ofcourse, using something like String.replace functions availiable in various languages. However, I could have a huge block of text with multiple string patterns, that I need to match and replace. I was wondering if I can use Regular Expressions to do this efficiently or do I have to use a Parser like LALR. I need to do this in JavaScript, so if anyone knows tools that can get it done, it would be appreciated.

  When a user signs up the system has to check that they are old enough to do so, in this example they have to be atleast 8 years old $minAge = strtotime(date("d")."-".date("m")."-".(date("Y")-8)); $dob = strtotime($day."-".$month."-".$year); $minAge = 01-03-2004, $dob = 01-02-2011 I basically need to make sure this person was born before 2004 but I want to know whether I have to convert the timestamps to do a comparison or whether there is a more efficient way. • Iphone - Displaying NSDate values in the debugger with local timezone

  Hello, I'm trying to debug my app and there is something very annoying in the debugger : all the NSDate values are displayed in the GMT timezone. So in my debugging process, I lose a lot of time converting by myself all the displayed dates to check if they are correct in the system timezone. As I have a lot of dates at midnight, even the day is displayed "wrong". It's a nightmare. Is there a way to make the debugger display the NSDate values in the iPhone system timezone (not the MacOS one nor GMT) ? I'm at GMT+1 Thank you for your help.

• ASP.NET Build Images Links Dynamically

  Good Day, I am developing a website that has product images on an external server. I have code that tests to see if the image exists like (pseudo code): DynamicString = FunctionThatCreatesDynamicString() ' DynamicString = "http://external_server/path/to/file1.jpg" If ImageExists(DyanmicString) = StatusCode.200 Then ' Embed link in ASP.NET page Else ' Embed not found image in ASP.NET page End If My code builds fine and appears to execute. The problem occurs when I attempt to view the external link in a browser, the image appears properly (I have to authenticate first, but that's OK considering I'm on an internal network and this app will be used internally). However, when I attempt the view the source in my generated HTML page, I am seeing the image to the "Not Found" image when I know the image is there. I compared all the characters in my dynamically assembled to the external link and all the characters are matching up correctly. I'm wondering if the authentication has anything to do with why the image is not rendering properly on my rendered HTML. Any thoughts? TIA, coson

• Why the macros in Objective-C / Cocoa?

  I'm coming from a place without macros (Java/Python/C#/Scala) so perhaps my perspective is distorted but... Why are macros used in Cocoa? Two that spring to mind are NSLocalizedString and NSAssert (and STAssert). Would it be so hard / unsuitable to make them functions (which could be inlined)? I suppose I find them a little bizarre as an unnecessary throw-back to C (and yes, I am familiar with the pedigree of Obj-C). Is it just something that was done back in the day or is there a specific reason?

I'm intending to use Git for version control, and I'm interested to see what guidelines or standards people are using around version in their groups, similar to coding standards are often written within the group for the group. I'm assuming there will be things like; Commit often (at least every day/week/meeting etc) Release builds are always made from the master branch Prior to release, a new branch will be created for Testing and tagged as such. only bug fixes from this point onwards. The final release of this will be tagged as such and the bug fixes merged back into the trunk Each developer will have a public repo New features should get their own branch Obviously a lot of this will depend on what cvs you're using and how you've structured it.   Hi, I would like to be able to send a string of emails at a determined interval to different recipients. I assign to each Contact this series of Emails called a Campaign, where Campaign has Email1, Email2, etc. Each Contact has a Contact.start_date. Each Email has email.days which stores the number of days since a Contact's start-date to send the email. For example: Email1.days=5, Email2.days=7, Email3.days=11. Contact1.start_date = 4/10/2010; contact2.start_date = 4/08/2010 IF today is 4/15, then Contact1 receives Email 1 (4/15-4/10 = 5 days) IF today is 4/15, then Contact2 received Email 2 (4/15 - 4/8 = 7 days). What's a good action to run every day using a cron job that would then follow these rules to send out emails using ActionMailer? Thanks.
