  • DualLayout for SharePoint 2010 WCM Quick Start

    DualLayout for SharePoint 2010 WCM is a solution to provide you with complete HTML freedom in your SharePoint Server 2010 publishing pages. In this post I provide a quick start guide to get you up and running quickly so you can try it out for yourself. This quick start creates a simple HTML5 site with a page to show-case the basics and the power of DualLayout. We will create the site in its own web application. Normally there are many things you have to do to create a clean start point for your SharePoint 2010 WCM site. All those steps will be provided in later posts. For now we want to give you the minimal set of steps to take to get DualLayout working on your machine. Create an authenticated web application with hostheader cms.html5demo.local on port 80 for the cms side of the site. Click the Create Site Collection link on the Application Created dialog box and create a Site Collection based on the Publishing Portal site template. Before we can click the site link in the Top-Level Site Successfully Created dialog we need to add the new host header cms.html5demo.local to the hosts file. Add the following line to the hosts file: 127.0.0.1        cms.html5demo.local Navigate to the site at http://cms.html5demo.local to see the out-of-the-box example Adventure Works publishing site. Download and add the DualLayout solution package designfactory.duallayout.sps2010.trial.1.2.0.0.wsp to the farm’s solution store: On the Start menu, click All Programs. Click Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products. Click SharePoint 2010 Management Shell. At the Windows PowerShell command prompt, type the following command:Add-SPSolution -LiteralPath designfactory.duallayout.sps2010.trial.1.2.0.0.wsp In SharePoint 2010 Central Administration deploy the solution to the web application http://cms.html5demo.local. Navigate to the site at http://cms.html5demo.local, and in the Site Settings screen select Site Collection Administration > Site collection features and activate the following feature: Open the site http://cms.html5demo.local in SharePoint Designer 2010.   • More SharePoint 2010 Expression Builders

    Introduction Following my last post, I decided to publish the whole set of expression builders that I use with SharePoint. For all who don’t know about expression builders, they allow us to employ a declarative approach, so that we don’t have to write code for “gluing” things together, like getting a value from the query string, the page’s underlying SPListItem or the current SPContext and assigning it to a control’s property. These expression builders are for some quite common scenarios, I use them quite often, and I hope you find them useful as well. SPContextExpression This expression builder allows us to specify an expression to be processed on the SPContext.Current property object.   • A ToDynamic() Extension Method For Fluent Reflection

    Recently I needed to demonstrate some code with reflection, but I felt it inconvenient and tedious. To simplify the reflection coding, I created a ToDynamic() extension method. The source code can be downloaded from here. Problem One example for complex reflection is in LINQ to SQL. The DataContext class has a property Privider, and this Provider has an Execute() method, which executes the query expression and returns the result. Assume this Execute() needs to be invoked to query SQL Server database, then the following code will be expected: using (NorthwindDataContext database = new NorthwindDataContext()) { // Constructs the query. IQueryable<Product> query = database.Products.Where(product => product.ProductID > 0) .OrderBy(product => product.ProductName) .Take(2); // Executes the query. Here reflection is required, // because Provider, Execute(), and ReturnValue are not public members. Here dynamic is able find the specified member. So the next thing is just writing some custom code to access the found member. .NET 4.0 DynamicObject, and DynamicWrapper<T> Where to put the custom code for dynamic? The answer is DynamicObject’s derived class. I first heard of DynamicObject from Anders Hejlsberg's video in PDC2008. It is very powerful, providing useful virtual methods to be overridden, like: TryGetMember() TrySetMember() TryInvokeMember() etc.  (In 2008 they are called GetMember, SetMember, etc., with different signature.) For example, if dynamicDatabase is a DynamicObject, then the following code: dynamicDatabase.Provider will invoke dynamicDatabase.TryGetMember() to do the actual work, where custom code can be put into. ToDynamic() and fluent reflection To make it even more straight forward, A ToDynamic() method is provided: public static class DynamicWrapperExtensions { public static dynamic ToDynamic<T>(this T value) { return new DynamicWrapper<T>(ref value); } } and a ToStatic() method is provided to unwrap the value: public class DynamicWrapper<T> : DynamicObject { public T ToStatic() { return this._value; } } In the above TryGetMember() method, please notice it does not output the member’s value, but output a wrapped member value (that is, memberValue.ToDynamic()). This is very important to make the reflection fluent. Now the code becomes: IEnumerable<Product> results = database.ToDynamic() // Here starts fluent reflection. .Provider.Execute(query.Expression).ReturnValue .ToStatic(); // Unwraps to get the static value. Take a look at the reflection code at the beginning of this post again. Now it is much much simplified! Special scenarios In 90% of the scenarios ToDynamic() is enough. But there are some special scenarios. Access static members Using extension method ToDynamic() for accessing static members does not make sense. Instead, DynamicWrapper<T> has a parameterless constructor to handle these scenarios: public class DynamicWrapper<T> : DynamicObject { public DynamicWrapper() // For static. { this._type = typeof(T); this._isValueType = this._type.IsValueType; } } The reflection code should be like this: dynamic wrapper = new DynamicWrapper<StaticClass>(); int value = wrapper._value; int result = wrapper.PrivateMethod(); So accessing static member is also simple, and fluent of course. Change instances of value types Value type is much more complex. The main problem is, value type is copied when passing to a method as a parameter. This is why ref keyword is used for the constructor. That is, if a value type instance is passed to DynamicWrapper<T>, the instance itself will be stored in this._value of DynamicWrapper<T>. Without the ref keyword, when this._value is changed, the value type instance itself does not change. Consider FieldInfo.SetValue(). In the value type scenarios, invoking FieldInfo.SetValue(this._value, value) does not change this._value, because it changes the copy of this._value. I searched the Web and found a solution for setting the value of field: internal static class FieldInfoExtensions { internal static void SetValue<T>(this FieldInfo field, ref T obj, object value) { if (typeof(T).IsValueType) { field.SetValueDirect(__makeref(obj), value); // For value type. } else { field.SetValue(obj, value); // For reference type. } } } Here __makeref is a undocumented keyword of C#. But method invocation has problem. If changing the value of the result, the copied struct is changed instead of the original struct. And so is the property and index accessing. They are both actually method invocation. For less confusion, setting property and index are not allowed on struct. Conclusions The DynamicWrapper<T> provides a simplified solution for reflection programming. It works for normal classes (reference types), accessing both instance and static members. In most of the scenarios, just remember to invoke ToDynamic() method, and access whatever you want: StaticType result = someValue.ToDynamic()._field.Method().Property[index]; In some special scenarios which requires changing the value of a struct (value type), this DynamicWrapper<T> does not work perfectly. Only changing struct’s field value is supported. The source code can be downloaded from here, including a few unit test code.

    First of all I'll just put both these patterns in context and describe their intent as in the GOF book: Factory Method: Define an interface for creating an object, but let subclasses decide which class to instantiate. Factory Method lets a class defer instantiation to subclasses.   Abstract Factory: Provide an interface for creating families of related or dependent objects without specifying their concrete classes.   Points to note:   Abstract factory pattern adds a layer of abstraction to the factory method pattern. The type of factory is not known to the client at compile time, this information is passed to the client at runtime (How it is passed is again dependent on the system, you may store this information in configuration files and the client can read it on execution). While implementing Abstract factory pattern, the factory classes can have multiple factory methods.   • How do I convert a Linux disk image into a sparse file?

    I have a bunch of disk images, made with ddrescue, on an EXT partition, and I want to reduce their size without losing data, while still being mountable. How can I fill the empty space in the image's filesystem with zeros, and then convert the file into a sparse file so this empty space is not actually stored on disk? For example: > du -s --si --apparent-size Jimage.image 120G Jimage.image > du -s --si Jimage.image 121G Jimage.image This actually only has 50G of real data on it, though, so the second measurement should be much smaller. This supposedly will fill empty space with zeros: cat /dev/zero > zero.file rm zero.file But if sparse files are handled transparently, it might actually create a sparse file without writing anything to the virtual disk, ironically preventing me from turning the virtual disk image into a sparse file itself. :) Does it? Note: For some reason, sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=./zero.file works when cat does not on a mounted disk image.

Nevertheless, I also applied the MaxCacheTTL registry fix as described and restarted DNS and the whole server as well but the problem persists. The problem occurs on all domain controllers in this domain and has occurred since half a year ago, even though the servers are getting automatic Windows updates. EDIT Here is a debug log. In this case, I didn't see any packets going out from my DNS server even though bogus. was not in the cache (the debug log was already running and this is the first time I queried this server for bogus. or any TLD). It just returned SERVFAIL without consulting any other DNS server, as in the Microsoft KB article linked above.

This only happens with printer drivers. And not with all printer drivers. Just some. Network drivers, video drivers, etc. have had no problems. If I take it off the domain, it installs fine. But it doesn't seem to have anything to do with Group Policy. I moved the machine to an OU that blocks inheritance, ran a gpupdate, ran rsop.msc to verify, and tried again. And it still didn't work. Likewise, I removed a machine from the domain, manually set all of the domain Group Policy settings in gpedit.msc, and tried that way, and it worked fine. So it seems like the Group Policy settings are irrelevant. What other domain-related issue could be causing this though? Any ideas on what to try next would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure where to go from here. Thanks!

    Is there a way to setup MySQL replication so that CREATE TABLE and ALTER TABLE statements get replicated but INSERT, DELETE and UPDATE statements do not? I've got replication working fine and have several tables that are ignored as per the requirements. But we have a requirement that the slaves have an empty copy of the ignored table. We create those empty copies before we start replicating. Since the table is ignored, table structure changes don't get passed down from the master to the slave's empty copy. I know it's a strange requirement.

However, that would apply to ALL kernels would it not? How do I apply the command line parameters to specific kernels? i.e. only xen.     My wife's Epson Workforce 600 has died, and I'm thinking of replacing it with a Canon Pixma MX882 printer/scanner/copier/fax. One of the most annoying things about the Epson is that once it has decided that one of the ink cartridges is empty, it will not let you print anything until the empty cartridge is replaced. I have a Canon IP1800 that will let you print until a cartridge actually runs out of ink, and even when a cartridge is depleted, I can continue to print using the other colors. (The driver allows you to print using only the color cartridges or using only the black cartridge.) Questions: Will the Canon Pixma MX882 allow me to print until the ink runs out or will it declare the cartridge empty while ink is still left? Will the Canon Pixma MX882 allow me to keep printing even after one of the cartridges has been used up?

    I often want to include default values in Puppet templates. I was hoping that given a class like this: class myclass ($a_variable=undef) { file { '/tmp/myfile': content => template('myclass/myfile.erb'), } } I could make a template like this: a_variable = <%= a_variable || "a default value" %> Unfortunately, undef in Puppet doesn't translate to a Ruby nil value in the context of the template, so this doesn't actually work. What is the canonical way of handling default values in Puppet templates? I can set the default value to an empty string and then use the empty? test... a variable = <%= a_variable.empty? ? "a default value" : a_variable %> ...but that seems a little clunky.

    I'm attempting to use the jQuery jFeed plugin for parsing an Atom, GeoRSS feed and I'm running into issues extracting the information I need. For example, I need to extract the summary element and I would like to render the contents in a div on my HTML page. Additionally, I'd like to extract the contents from the georss:point elements and pass them into Google Maps to render them as points on a map. The problem is that it seems jFeed is stripping out the GeoRSS-related information. For example, I can extract the title element without issues, but it seems it doesn't extract the summary or georss:point elements, at all.     I have the following class that implements IXmlSerializable. When implementing WriteXml(), I need to handle the case where the string members of this class may be null values. What is the best way of handling this? Currently, I am using the default constructor in which all the string properties are initialized to empty string values. This way, when WriteXml() is called, the string will not be null. One other way I could do this is check using String.IsNullOrEmpty before writing each string in xml.     I am trying to get validation to work in ASP.NET MVC 2, but without much success. I have a complex class containing a large number of fields. (Don't ask - this is oneo f those real-world situations best practices can't touch) This would normally be my Model and is a LINQ-to-SQL generated class. (Am aware t is similar to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1260562/asp-net-mvc-model-viewmodel-validation but that post seems to talk about xVal. I have no idea what that is and suspect it is for MVC 1)
