• New computer - AMD with which mobo? [closed]

  I need to buy new computers for the office, all running ubuntu 10.04 or 11.10, whichever works. I am looking at a asus mobo with the AMD870 northbridge and 850 sounthbridge. Can anyone tell me if that is buggy or not? And with maybe an Athlon II X4 640 processor. At home I am running an asus mobo with AMD880/SB850 at home, which is good, although the on board ATI video card was buggy, I put a nvida card in as well and its great now. But for the office I want to save cost, don't need a kick-ill system. Still, I need the machines to be fast and look good, don't want to skimp on performance. Can anyone provide me with some advice about this? I will buy a custom machine, not from one of the big manufacturers. Thanks! :-)

  3D engine programmers have to care a little about execution speed, but what about the programmers at ATI and nVidia ? How much do they need to optimize their driver applications ? Are there jobs out there who only purpose is execution speed and optimisation, or jobs for people to program only in assembly ? Please, no flame war about "premature optimisation is the root of all evil", I just want to know if such jobs exists, maybe in security ? In kernel programming ? Where ? Not at all ?

• Garbled display after Ubuntu upgrade to 2.6.32-2* kernel

  I was running Ubuntu 9 (Karmic Koala) with no problems. I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10 (Lucid Lynx) and cannot use it normally. After I log in, the screen scrambles (a purple/green mess)--impossible to see anything, although I can get out by marking the spot on the screen to click for a restart, so Linux is working behind the scenes. If I start in recovery mode with basic graphics, I have no problems at all (other than limited functionality). If I start the old 2.6.31-22 kernel, I see a bunch of "unmountable" errors in the startup script, but I can use Linux normally with no apparent problems. I'm running an IBM ThinkPad A30 with ATI Mobility graphics. Just to reiterate, the screen looks normal until I log in, at which point it goes bonkers. What do I need to change in order to fix this?

• Computer Freezes After GRUB

  Ok so I've just built my first computer and have got it running, here are the specs: Asus P8Z68-V PCI-E LX Motherboard, Intel Core i5-2500K, Patriot Memory 8GB (2 x 4GB), Viper Xtreme Series PC3-15000 1866MHz CL9 Division 2 Edition Memory (PXD38G1866ELK), Gigabyte ATI Radeon 6850 820MHz 1GB PCI-E HDMI OC Windforce 2x 500w Ezcool 24pin psu as standard. The only thing I haven't bought new is the hard drive, it's a 250gb that I removed from an Acer Aspire M5100 that I was using till now with no OS Problems. On start up it runs fine but is unresponsive after the GRUB menu disappears to load Ubuntu (Oneric Ocelot). The keyboard lights then turn off and the screen eventually returns that there is no signal. Is there anything that I could be missing from building? (This is my first attempt at building my own PC) Any input would be appreciated, thanks !

  OK here is the problem,I am using gnome-shell, ubuntu 12.04, kernel 3.2.0-32-generic-pae and the proprietary drivers for my ati card (Installed via "additional drivers") , the laptops is a hp 4310s probook and i want to control the power_profiles and power_method , because my GPU temp is high. before i reinstalled ubuntu 12.04, i used the .sh method on startup to write to those files, and everything worked like a charm, but now they are missing, and i can't create them.this is what i get when i try to create the directories mkdir: cannot create directory `/sys/class/drm': No such file or directory How can i can get them back?if you need some information , just ask and i will give it.

• Lost desktop settings in KDE

  After next unsuccessful attempt to install ATI fglrx drivers, when I also changed GRUB config a bit (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="radeon.modeset=0 and GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset"). When I restored everything to default (uninstalled fglrx, restored default values in GRUB config and xorg.conf) KDE logged me into completely new desktop, with (I suppose) default configuration. Is there a way to restore my previous desktop settings? What could be the cause? SOLVED: Something was messed out with display settings. Search for 'Display Configuration' and there deselect one display. Or is there a better option?

• uswsusp won't hibernate with freeplane and some websites open

  I installed uswsusp on my laptop to hibernate faster, which works most of the time, but whenever I have freeplane (and some websites in firefox...can't recall which ones but can probably find some) it fails. In order to hibernate, I have to resort to closing the offending program or webpage - but this kinda ruins the point of hibernating... It fails when I try sudo s2disk in a terminal with freeplane open, but strangely works with sudo s2ram --force. When it fails, it simply switches to the black screen with s2disk: Snapshotting system but then returns to the login screen. When I enter my password, the hibernating indicator continues flashing but goes back to the desktop I left when trying to hibernate. When it works, it works as expected from hibernate, shutdown and resume. I saw another thread discuss fglrx modules and to include it in MODULE="fglrx" in /etc/default/acpi-support, but that hasn't helped me. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 with an ATI graphics card on an Acer Aspire 6920.

• 10.10 Acer 7551g - hibernation and suspending don't work

  Issue is quite the same like here, I've tried everything I found and nothing happens. If I use uswsusp, suspending works good, but graphics doesn't wake up, when I want to hibernate system, it tells me "Looking for splash system... none s2disk:snapshotting system" and nothing happens. I'm using ATI drivers, i've tried to disable kms, unload usb3 and network drivers, still nothing. Please help me, I don't want to come back to Windows after my 2-year-relationship with Linux. I can share all files I have with you, just help me.

• wake up from suspend to ram problem

  I have very strange problem. After suspending to ram notebook doesn't wakes up, only leds and fan switches on, no HDD activity and display stays off(without backlights-completly off). If I press numlock- led doesn't switches, all buttons are not warkable. I have installed uswsusp and tryed to use s2ram, but result is exactly similar. I tryed to remove fglrx, but useless. • after upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10, no keyboard, cannot login

  Hello, just did upgrade from kubuntu 10.04 to 10.10.. after all done and reboot, when the login box shows up, my keyboard and laptop pad ( mouse ) dosn't work, (plugged in the usb mouse, it works sometimes) but never keyboard. i went to recovery , the boot hung up when it says : [ 17.704053] EXT4-fs (sda9): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode Begin: Running /scripts/local-bottom ... Done. Done. Begin: Running /scripts/init-bottom ... Done. stuck here. nothing works except ctrl+alt+del i tried booting from livecd and update-grub, also tried booting manually from grub command line, everytime it stuck at lines above .. so it's not grub problem . how to solve this ? if it is important, i have ATI mobility radeon HD 5470 card .

And there is a Xorg.0.log also & Xorg.0.log.old but it doesnt have any error in it. My system seems to work properly and it seems its not affected by this But how do I correct this message? • Graphical Mode breaks after suspend/ returning from Console

  When I try to go to a virtual console (ctrl alt f1) and return to f7, my screen freaks out. Its black with frequent white 'lightning bolts' flashing across the screen. Nothing works, but to force shutdown. Same when trying to resume from suspend. This doesnt happen every time, but very often. I dont know what information might be useful but: Ubuntu 12.10 ATI RS880M [Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series] Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS880 this line in xsession-errors might be pertinent: (gnome-settings-daemon:1825): color-plugin-WARNING **: Done switch to new account, reload devices p.s. Ive tried the fglrx drivers but need the legacy drivers as described here, but nothing past a black screen.

• Failed to install the proprietary display driver, Compiz crashed!

  ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5400 I was using the default open source driver with Gnome classic, but when I upgraded to the closed sourced one using jockey-gtk/additional drivers everything messed up! It failed to activate the driver. Here is the error log. Wobbly windows or any other compiz effect won't work now. I can't even move a window! I'm on Precise Pangolin, Kernel-3.2.0-31-generic-pae Please Help! :( Update: I think my driver is installed even jockey doesn't show it. Compiz effects are working in Unity desktop... but I want it on Gnome Classic.

• Resuming from hibernation shows a fuzzy "static" screen

  When I resume from hibernation in Ubuntu 10.10 the screen shows static, very similar to what you see on an analogue TV that hasn't been tuned properly. This also occurs on boot from shut down, but only for a moment after the Plymouth boot screen. The static lasts for at least 5 minutes. An odd thing that happens is that the mouse pointer, as a lighter square of static, becomes visible and you can move it around. Attempting to change into a terminal (i.e. Ctrl+Alt+F1) doesn't seem to work (and I'm not sure if that can be done from the login screen). Resuming from suspend has different issues - vertical lines appearing for a second before appearing to be in terminal mode (blinking cursor) and then going to the lock screen. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell Studio 15 with ATI graphics, however I'm not using the proprietary drivers as I had issues with dual-screen support, so it's the generic X.org drivers being used.

  YES I have figured out that my laptop overheats while using the internet via an Ethernet port through a broadband connection.Strange isn't it ? Well I need to know WHY ? . I have installed ATI Graphics : Vesa Madison as they appear to be working very fine. Temperature of my i7-hp pavilion dv6 rises from 67degrees to a superhot 85+ and also to 106degrees where my laptop shuts down. When running torrents or Chromium I hardly open 4 Tabs so there is no chance for CPU over-loading due to multiple processes.NEED HELP.And Thank You for your time.

• My desktop disappeared, how do I get it back?

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. This morning when I logged into my Ubuntu, after login screen the complete desktop was empty, the only operation I could perform is right-click and open terminal. What I've tried: Ctrl+Alt+F1 unity --reset : didn't work From terminal unity --reset : didn't work And from login screen selecting Ubuntu 2D and that also didn't solve the problem. My laptop is Toshiba SA-60 onboard ATI graphic card with 1 GB RAM. Please tell me how to solve this problem. I don't want to reinstall Ubuntu as whenever I install a I/O error pops up, forget about that. I don't want to reinstall Ubuntu. Please help.

• Asus A8N-SLI soundcard/headphone not recognized/working

  I have an Asus A8N-SLI with built-in sound-card which in the front has headset connection. Alsamixer V1.0.25 says Card: HD-Audio Generic Chip:ATI R6xx HDMI. Only option it gives is S/PDIF nothing else. I can only select the Generic sound-card others are not available. It seems it is not being recognized by Ubuntu. My technical skills are limited and I have searched for similar problems but could not find a solution. Any help in how to proceed forward is therefore greatly appreciated. I also have a windows focus problem with Gnome3 and Unity for which I will make a new question. Between those two problems it works like a charm as always. Though I'm only going to upgrade the laptop to 12.04 if I have the desktop running smoothly.

  I'm using a laptop having dedicated graphics card with Ubuntu and Windows 7 dual boot. The windows 7 idle temperature for cpu is 51C average and gpu is 46-48.5C, and when in load Cpu temp varies between 55-61C, and GPU 49-51 MAX. But in ubuntu idle temp CPU: 54c Gpu(ati radeon,proprietary driver installed): 50C and on load cpu: 58-69C gpu:53C max. Is it normal? If not is there any solution? Note that i'm using jupiter,latest graphics driver, grub tweaks etc.

• Gnome/X logs off immediately after login -- which logfiles are relevant?

  I've been tinkering with fingerprint-gui as well as X/xrandr resolution settings. When I start my machine, it boots up normally. As soon as X and gnome have finished starting, it logs me off automatically and brings me back to the gdm login prompt with the user list. Then I am, however, able to log in using "Ubuntu Desktop Fail-safe". I've checked the list of start-up applications, but everything seems fine there. I can't yet put my finger on what exactly might be responsible for this: X, gnome or some messed up pam.d settings. So far I've checked /var/logs/X11/xorg.0.log, /var/logs/auth.log and ~/.xsession-errors. In addition, I don't quite seem to understand the "interplay" between X, GDM, GNOME, GNOME-policykit, PAM.d and all that. Are there any other relevant log files that could point me to what's broken? • Problems after installing Ubuntu LiveUSB on my 2nd HD

  I decided to create a Ubuntu USB installer using the Universal USB Installer, selecting a Ubuntu 12.10 ISO. I selected my D: drive, my NON-windows7 carrying drive as install. After this I Re-booted my system and my PC began to Run the Ubuntu Boot-startscreen every time I power up the machine, giving errors like this: Root=Unknown I used my girlfriend's laptop to create, on the exact same way, a real! USB Ubuntu installer. Booting from that USB, picking the option Run Ubuntu from this USB I get the following error: http://postimage.org/image/63qkv98c1/ Let's try installing it from that USB to a Hard-Disk: http://postimage.org/image/usqbwymfx/ As I said: I do not have the Option to pick my Boot-section, at this very moment I can only access to the Ubuntu installation and nothing else.   I find ubuntu extremely unstable with mouse freezes (that can be corrected with control key), constant Compiz crashes ( with ATI non proprietary drivers also), problems installing drivers ( why would I want a video driver that fails to play most games, with loss of function of so many games (BZ flag?? has been around for years with no problems). I get the feeling that there is so one in your dept who is intentionally making poor and unstable choices for less than altruistic reasons. Whatever happened has been worsening ever since Unity became a choice. I have tried Kubuntu, Mint, Lubuntu and several other variants with similar poor results. Be aware I have used Ubuntu for many years.

• ubuntu 12.04 html5 video jumps out of fullscreen when I change volume [closed]

  Often I can't play html5 videos at all until after a relogin. I have a lenovo t500 with an ati hd3650. My sense is that it's the pop up notice that kills fullscreen. The "popup" notice refers to the notice that always pops up in the upper right hand corner when ubuntu announces something. In this case it pops up when I change the volume and video immediately jumps out of fullscreen. The question is: can I do something about the lack of fullscreen in youtube html5 or is it something I just have to accept?
